Willem Dafoe On Playing A 9 Foot Tall Martian With 4 Arms!

As we know, Dafoe will be playing Tars Tarkas in John Carter Of Mars . AICN have an interview with the actor in which he talks about his amazing career and many of his movies including Carter.
I would easily put Willem Dafoe in the top 5 actors working today. The man just can not deliver a bad performance. Even if the movies he appears in can be mediocre, he is always 100% convincing to me. Obviously he is most famous to CBM fans for playing The Green Goblin in Spider Man , but he has a new comic related project on the horizon in John Carter Of Mars, along side X Men Origins: Wolverine alumni Taylor Kitsch and Lynne Collins.

AICN have a great interview with Dafoe, covering most of his major roles through the years. We will just be covering the Carter stuff but if your a fan be sure to click on the link at the end of the article to read the full thing.

John Carter Of Mars is currently scheduled to start shooting next January, so Dafoe doesn't know much about it yet, but he is "very excited" and he has "seen renderings" of his character. Dafoe is playing Tars Tarkas, a leader of the Thark race who becomes an ally to Carter(Kitsch)..

"I've seen a lot of the designs and things, and I've just started to do prep work now… But I'm starting doing [CGI] scans and things like that, but it's going to be a real full-on… Well, I'm nine feet tall with four arms, but, just from the scheduling, I'm going to do the stuff."

"Also, they'll use my face, but they'll enhance it in a way–both after and before–in a way that I may not be recognizable. But, I'm good with that. It's particularly cool, because he's a creature, but he's got this huge range of character. And, he does cool things in the movies."

Asked whether or not his character would be CGI or live action Dafoe said..

"It is going to be a combination, Andrew Stanton comes out of Pixar and the amount of research and development that they do on this stuff is incredible. And I'll be involved in part of that."

I'm looking forward to seeing some footage. Also, if you're a Willem Dafoe fan, do check out his new movie Anti Christ. It's an experience! Not necessarily a good one, but well worth seeing.

KawVader - 10/20/2009, 6:20 PM
Ror-- Antichrist was AWESOME! I think I screamed the whole time. Wow, dude, wow.

I've always been a huge fan of Willem Defoe. I used to think he was the ugliest man alive and that he probably wouldn't get cast that often and that it was unfortunate. But he's had a great career and as you say, he is always good! In his career he gets to play Jesus and the Antichrist! How cool is that?
Betty - 10/20/2009, 6:21 PM
KawVader-- uh, Platoon, hello?
Betty - 10/20/2009, 6:21 PM
Tea, I've actually managed to avoid Speed 2 thus far so I can't comment! I'm sure he did phone it in in that one though...

Luffy, well, its finally sunk in eh? lol, he man, its no biggy, its just that because you said so little along with the vids it was really just spamming at the end of the day.

Betty, I did like Anti Christ..if thats the right word, I don't think its possible to actually like it! It was an interesting and well made movie is probably the best I can say. Fubar in every way!
RorMachine - 10/20/2009, 6:22 PM
Betty- i have a bad memory with movie names.
KawVader - 10/20/2009, 6:24 PM
So far so good. But I thought the same thing about Tim Roth in Planet of the Apes. We don't need another Battlefield Earth either.

American cinema needs to grow some Balls, slow-mo swinging balls.
Betty - 10/20/2009, 7:02 PM
@Betty. Transformers 2 had balls, big swinging robot balls, does that count?
THEHAWK - 10/20/2009, 7:17 PM

Betty - 10/20/2009, 7:32 PM

Misterfan - 10/20/2009, 7:47 PM
I have been waiting for this movie for a loooong time. I read the books in jr high, almost 30 years ago. This could be such a great movie, think Lord of the Rings in scale. They better not screw it up.......
BubbaDude - 10/20/2009, 8:22 PM
Is this the four armed guy he's supposed to be playing? I know nothing about Carter from mars.

Betty - 10/20/2009, 8:22 PM
and just because I can't get it out of my head

Betty - 10/20/2009, 8:44 PM

pssst...(ror... i dont mean to get off topic honest but i have been dying to ask you since you always seem to know the latest! I read brad pitt is going to be in Sherlock Holmes 2? 1 hasnt even come out yet!!!! have you heard anything on your end?!)
KeepItReal - 10/20/2009, 9:42 PM
This movie sounds like it gonna be good, can't wait.
Bandrews1 - 10/20/2009, 9:58 PM
Betty, that green guy you highlighted is a Thark. DaFoe will be playing Tars Tarkas, the leader of the Tharks. Why not just go buy the book, "A Princess of Mars" it's a quick read, and you'll probably get sucked into the whole Barsoom thing.....
BubbaDude - 10/20/2009, 10:00 PM
BubbaDude-- ok cool.
Betty - 10/20/2009, 11:24 PM
sounds good

bropous - 10/21/2009, 6:15 AM
For those of you who are not familiar with the John Carter of Mars stories (or any other Edgar Rice Burroughs stories) they can be found online FREE at the Gutenberg Project website:

http://www.gutenberg.net.au/plusfifty-a-m.html#letterB

Burroughs created Tarzan as well as John Carter of Mars, along with the stories of the civilization at the center of the Earth, Pellucidar. DC ran comic versions of these stories in the early-to-mid 70s, some of my favorite comics of the time period.

John Carter is a Civil War vet who is yanked out of his Virginia home to Mars and thrust into a power struggle between the races of Mars (green, blue, white, and yellow). He falls in love with a hot Martian chick, works his way up through Tarkian warrior society, and gets sent back to Earth, unwillingly.

It's a good story, a good read. Dafoe will make an EXCELLENT Tars Tarkus, and I agree on the impeachable caliber of his acting. I am looking forward to seeing this movie.

NOW DAMMIT WHERE IS MY SOLOMON KANE???????
bropous - 10/21/2009, 6:27 AM
Sounds really cool. I can't wait to see a trailer.
BmanHall - 10/21/2009, 6:40 AM

teabag - 10/21/2009, 9:33 AM
@teabag

hmm yea maybe..the 2nd 1 i tried to make it look more like the comics..oh well fail! lol im not that good wiv photoshop but still i would love to see W.D come back from the dead and hire the hobogoblin to take revenge on spidey

if my memory is correct wasn't harry osborne the hobogoblin at one point?
TheLivingWeapon - 10/21/2009, 9:44 AM
I dont remember him actualy being the Hobgoblin but im not 100% as he had envolvment with the Hobster ;)

Im sure someone here will tell me im wrong lol :P
teabag - 10/21/2009, 9:58 AM
oh wait i did sum looking into it and harry was!!...in the 90's cartoon lol if that counts
TheLivingWeapon - 10/21/2009, 10:07 AM
NO it doesnt lmao :P
teabag - 10/21/2009, 10:09 AM
lol damn...
anyhu i think 5 or 6 should be Norman comes back from the dead and during his growing popularity in the public eye he writes a book claiming spidey tried to kill him and the fear for his life kept him in hiding for his life until he took upon him enough courage to come back..mean while in his revenge for peter he hires someone to undergo the treatment to become hobogoblin to attack peter and his family..mean while spidey is hated by the public due to normans book. that was partly from the comics

i would love to see that
TheLivingWeapon - 10/21/2009, 10:19 AM
Me Too the guy did an amazing job as Gobby so he needs a return :)
teabag - 10/21/2009, 10:31 AM
Id like to see him back. He returned in the comics after that impaling so...they could find a way to make it believable. How awesome would a Norman Osborn as Iron Patriot somewhere down the line be?..yeah I know I'm dreaming:(
RorMachine - 10/21/2009, 11:44 AM
What a sweet dream it is tho :)
teabag - 10/21/2009, 11:52 AM
Ror - Surely his "performance enhancers" gave him some healing factor? His body could have just kept it's self alive in a sort of hibernation state until fully healed. He's been buried alive and breaking out. If Uma can do it in Kill Bill then Goblin can do it!

KeepItReal - I heard Pitt's been drafted to shoot a few cameo scenes for the 1st movie with an eye on leading into the 2nd.
