Tobey Maguire Talks Spider-Man 4 Villains

No, he doesn't say who they are! Just who he likes...and the Lizard is top of his list.
In a recent MTV fan vote, The Lizard topped the poll as the villain most wanted for the fourth Spidey movie. With Carnage coming second, and Mysterio third(who the hell was voting!). Anyway, in an interview with MTV, Tobey Maguire talks about these choices..



"I'm more familiar with Lizard and Mysterio, and I don't know -- I like them as villains," said Maguire. "I think they're great, and Lizard obviously has a very personal relationship with Peter Parker, so we often will go towards that kind of stuff."

"I'm not that familiar with Carnage," the actor explained. "I'm aware of Carnage, but I know Sam was sort of a fan of the early Spider-Man comics, and Carnage comes much later."

It has to be the Lizard! Doesn't it?

He does seem to be hinting at that, but he has nothing to do with the script. Oh, this is my first first. I don't know what's going on with this movie. I'm not worried though. Lot's of good things coming out besides this.

I'm down with The Lizard..it makes sense to me,
Curt Conners has been in the last two Spider-Man
movies so I think it will work. Throw a little
twist of Kraven in the mix and we got ourselves
a Spider-Man 4!!

Cheers Leee. I really [frick]ing hate Mysterio..and im not a big fan of Carnage either for that matter! Lizard, yes, Kraven..not so much, but he could work with The Lizard..Black Cat I like, Vulture..meh, Scorpion, deffo, Shocker..ok, Rhino..maybe, but only a side villain. You know who could be great? Tombstone!

Finally, some good news about SM 4!

F*ck yeah to Lizard, save Mysterio for another movie as a side villain.

Lizard and Kraven are the only ways to go!

F*ck Black Catwoman rip-off, f*ck the worst Spidey villain Vulture.

I remember when Spider-Man 2 came out I was reading an article like this and Tobey said his favorite was Sandman,and look where that led up to.

So Lizard or Mysterio have got 2 be villians.

TOMBSTONE would be a great on film!! SPIDEY or DD he would be good! RHINO would be better off in a HULK movie though a five minute cameo battle getting beaten by SPIDEY in SPIDEY 4 wouyld be [frick]ing amazing!

Multi: With the crap load of rumors circling around those 2 being the villains, I do sort of believe you, but I hate both characters so much, there's just a sliver of hope left that I have that Raimi won't use them! Don't take what hope I have left man! :_(

i don't think electro and mysterio are bad enough to have their own movie. they could both play second string to someone else in separate movies, but electro, though he has cool powers, is always a sissy in the comics. and mysterio is kind of a joke character.

Well Multi, when his villains are good they are very very good, but when they are bad, they are [frick]ing awful!

Lee, a cameo would be fine but I would hate to see him as a major villain. I mean, he's an illusionist with a fish bowl on his head. Am I missing something here?

Tyler, Black Cat may be a Catwoman rip off, but she has had a few good arcs in the comics and there is an interesting dynamic with Spidey/Parker. But there would nave to be a proper evil bastard villain this time around too...Lizard doesn't even really qualify since he is essentially Dr Jekkyl/ Mr Hyde. Tombstone would fit that part..or Scorpion, could set up Mack Gargon for a new Venom later on too.

i can see why people might not like mysterio, but early on he was kind of a legitimate threat. anyway, just think how cool they could make his powers look in a movie!! remember bruce campbell's appearance in spidey 2, the one where he's working the door at the theatre? well mysterio's origin is that he was a special effects guy, they could easily say that he rigs the special effects stuff at those shows...and thats how he became mysterio. but yeah, he would be a weak character, at least plot wise.

@Tyler: I've learned not to hold out hope for CBM sequels unless I want to be disappointed. Unfortunately, I'd give it an 80% chance for Vulture/Black Cat. If it makes you feel better you can create the Boycott Spider-Man 4 Petition yourself :D

@Ror: Very true. BTW, I just started reading the entire Sandman series. I'm ashamed I've gone this far without getting past volume 1.

i just meant that other characters make fun of him all the time like he's some putz, and for a while he was just a putz. although i have to admit, that in kevin smith's daredevil run, Guardian Devil, he was awesome! even though he shot himself in the head...i didn't know he came back since then. but i don't follow spidey comics sooooo...

Ror: She's had some good arcs, but she's so unnecessary at this point in the franchise. All she would do is bring in yet another love-interest for Peter, which is the opposite of what the franchise should be doing. We learned from SM 3 how bad they can f*ck up a love-triangle, I don't want to give them that chance again.

Kraven would be the proper bad guy, since he would be both trying to actually kill Connors, who the audience would sympathize with, and Spidey too, which, needless to say, is bad.

InSpace: Catwoman first appeared in 1940 (give or take a few years), Black Cat came around in the late 70's.

@Tyler: I still think the only way to properly bring this franchise back is the tie up all the loose ends from the last three instead of ignore them. No new villains yet.

Carnage should only have a cameo in spiderman 4 but if they decide to do the lizard they better put Kraven in there or else the film will suck.

Multi: What loose ends though? I can't think of any off the top of my head. The movie may have been sh*t, but SM 3 tied up most of the loose ends of the franchise. They killed off Harry and Venom, Peter and MJ are back together, Sandman walked off into the sunset (metaphorically speaking), Harry forgave Peter before he died, etc.

Well, I can't comment on Mysterio's latest work because like CDB, I haven't been keeping up to date with Spidey, but back in the day, he was a dick!

Was Spider Man 3 really shit? I mean reeeeally SHIT? I don't think so, I enjoyed some elements of it. I think it gets written off as a complete failure because people can't forget the emo dance/Venom stuff..which were crap, but what about the cool stuff? Parker and harry's scrap when he gets half his face blown off..that was awesome I thought. The Sandman's transformation..the Gwen Stacy skyscraper rescue..It wasn't all bad

@Ror: I'm totally into it now! I've read volumes 2 - 6 in the past 2 days, I can't put it down! I just finished reading The Dream Hunters as well. (I caved and ordered the whole set on eBay)

@Tyler: What about Gwen? When are going to bring Norman Osborn back? Is Doc Ock still alive? What happened to the symbiote in Dr. Connor's lab? Those aren't loose ends?

How about this instead - Leave MJ out of Peter's life except as a sideline friend. Have Gwen as the main love interest. Bring Norman back as the the Green Goblin (sans metal suit); have him KILL Gwen and get away at the end. End the movie with Connors becoming Lizard and accidentally releasing the symbiote specimen.

Morbius and Black Cat are my choices as the villains,
at the end Connors becomes the Lizard to set up the fith movie with Kraven and Lizard as the antagonists
a cameo by Volture or Rhyno, i any of the next movies would be nice too, especially the integrants of the sinister 6

Osbourne is dead, it's not "when" the bring him back, but if. They sort of closed off the Goblin (at least Green Goblin)/Osbourne thread with Harry's death.

Doc Ock is DEAD. He has long, metal tentacles, but do you expect him to survive a miniature SUN collapsing directly on top of him? Or falling deep into the water into the blackness, with the tentacle lights metaphorically flickering out?

The symbiote in Doc Connors' lab is the one I'll give you. That is a loose end.

Its something special eh Multi? The Sandman is still the greatest comic I have ever read..bar none. Gaimen is a genius. The art in the early ones isn't the may west though. You see the Golden Age Sandman is going to be in Smallville?

Ock and GG could both come back..probably won't though. Hell anyone could come back! Its Spider Man. How many time shave characters died and been resurrected in those comics over the years?

I would be happy to see Vulture/Black Cat in the next movie just as much as I'd be happy to see Kraven/Lizard or Scorpion/Electro! I dont want Carnage, Morbius or any other lame villain, I'll be pleased with any of the classic Spider-Man villains!

MULTI: As much as I want to see Osborn return and like the sound of your idea, I would much prefer to see some new villains instead of bringing back the old ones! :)

i know what you mean man, i seriously don't get how so many people question if doc ock is alive, its so funny. people complain that he shouldn't have been able to take a punch from spidey (which we all know, spidey always pulls his punches when fighting a normal person) but they'll totally believe that he could survive a sun falling on him...and drowning. never mind the lights twinkling out of existence like you said, to symbolize that he died.

"oh, but there was that newspaper that said, doc ock still at large" in spidey 3. well newspapers do that with best selling headline papers. they frame them and put them on the wall. lol

Save him for the Venom spin-off! :P I cant see them choosing Carnage anyway - Raimi didnt even want to use Venom and the character hasnt been in a comic book for years - hell, Amazing Spider-Man editor Stephen Wacker has said he's not a fan of bringing the character back any time soon! I just want tosee one of the classic villains next time!

but still have faith on him, he is the right actor for this movie and i hope him and Raimi, do it right this time, i want this movie to get done right, and other cbm too, i don't wanna be hearing anything about the twilight saga anymore

i wanna see this happen (it probably won't tho):

Spider Man 4:
-peter parker is getting over th fact that MJ "is thru with love"(song she sings @ end uv SM3). mabye we wont have to see her in this movie! (i doubt it tho)

-mysterio (bruce cambell) comes into the scene and spide has to face him.

-dr connors is trying to create a serum to bring his arm back. Thus, he duz, and becomes the Lizard.

-have spidey still facing mysterio and introduce the Lizard into battle around half the movie. have lizard + mysterio get away.

-end battles: spidey fights and finally defeats mysterio, and goes after lizard. faces lizard, to which he changes back to Dr Connors (make him say "I'm a Monster" or sumthin like that). THEN have him transform back into Lizard and make him escape, leaving spidey to follow him onto the next movie.

-Leave the end with a glimpse of Kraven to show he will be the next villian.

Spider Man 5:
-Spider Man still faces lizard, along with Kraven. Have at end Spidey and kraven team up to take down lizard once and for all. Somewhere in this movie, introduce felicia hardy and have her become black cat 4 Spider Man 6. also (alright, whatever), have Peter and MJ get married

Spider Man 6
-BRING IN CARNAGE!
-HAVE THIS RATED R!!! (doubt it.)
-Spider Man faces black cat about 1/4 way through.
-Carnage is introduced (would be cool to have slight history of Cassidy in begining.)
-Have in final battle, Spidey and Cat team up to defeat Carnage. Black cat is viciously murdered by Carnage (and i mean BLOOD AND GORE!). Spidey stops carnage, destroys the symbiote, comes back to MJ, and has a daughter. END (finally)

-(Cassidy is put in mental institute, while 1 piece of symbiote remains. the rest of Dr Connors' symbiote is kept in highly secured labrotory facility. have this lead into venom movie, but idk how ther gonna hav a better eddie brock wen th eric forman one exploded in SM3. mabye have him resurected?)

probably not, but that would be cool, wouldn't it. any thoughts? anyone?...

@Tyler/CDB: I don't understand the logic you're both trying to say. Since Doc Oct was in fact able to go toe-to-toe with Spidey in the movie, then it should be just as reasonable for him to have survived the ending of SM2. He floated in the water, he wasn't burnt up by the experiment. Did you see him blown apart or melted by the 'giant sun'? No, he just drifted away. That looked like an ending open to interpretation.

@Ror: Yeah, I saw the pic. Do you think they should ever try to make a Sandman movie or mini-series? I don't think it would work

Just give us Kraven and the lizard in a three way fight. Carnage can never happen in a PG-13 movie, get it through your heads. Nobody wants a watered down version of Carnage.

I actually do quite like Carnage and as InSpace said a serial killer with a symbiote is cool but we've had Venom (who they ruined) so rather than now having a watered down Carnage I'd much prefer to see a classic villain like Electro!

I think that it would be possible to bring back Doc Ock...the arms could have dragged him out of the water just after we cut away from him floating down into the water! However, as I said above I'd like to see some new villains fo the next couple of movies! By the time 2011 comes around we'll have waited 4 years for a new Spider-Man movie and Id rather not see another version of something I've already seen!

no, i remember him sinking like a rock, with that miniature sun falling down right where he fell in. he wasn't floating anywhere. who WOULD be able to float with four giant metal arms strapped to their back?

my logic with the fact that he can take a punch from spidey is that spidey is known to pull his punches when fighting someone that he would otherwise kill. spidey punches doc ock all the time in the comics and it doesn't kill him. which COULD explain why ock could go toe to toe with him. but there's no explanation how he could survive drowning, or having that thing collapse on him. i know it didn't show that sun burn him up, but it fell in the water, right where ock fell in. but since they didn't show it i guess i can maybe overlook that. but they made it pretty clear that he died with the flickering lights going out.

Its Lizard. Actors don't know about there superheroes much and the fact that tobey even knows there names is enough.....LIZARD........Besides he has admitted in MANY interviews he's not much into comics.

And It'd be confusing to replace an actor in the main role for the last couple of movies in a franchise

@CDB: Like you said, that's your logical explanation. It's not mine. This is a movie about fictional characters that live in a fantasy world not completely grounded in reality. Raimi isn't Nolan, he doesn't eliminate the fantasy aspect. Unless I hear or read Raimi saying Doc Ock is dead, I think he put that newspaper up on Jameson's wall for a reason.

They could just as easily bring Osborn back.

Seriously, its a movie! A comic book movie at that. Ock could easily come back. It APPEARED that he drowned, we never see him actually die, and even at that, real world logic doesn't apply to it. Plus, that article may have been an old clipping , but im pretty sure it was still added in the shot as a nod to the fact that he is still at large. Anyway, its probably moot because I seriously doubt he will be back..at least in the next few movies(If they happen).

Multi, a Sandman movie COULD work, but they would have to get a director and writer that really loved the material and had the skills to bring it to the screen. The stories are pretty out there. I doubt it would be seen as a "blockbuster" project. But Gaimen said it will happen..sooner or later.

you're right, it is fantasy. but i'm not so sure we'll be seeing the revolving door of death in these movies. no CBM franchise has yet to do it. we're talking about movies that no one ever knows how long they'll go on. i'm just saying that we shouldn't consider doc ock a "loose end". it was clearly meant to show that he died. his story is done. just like the goblins. there is no need whatsoever to bring them back. in my eyes, you NEED to bring in new villains, otherwise they'll just be rehashing old things with finished stories and plot lines.

@CDB: The Green Goblin is to Spider-Man what the Joker is to Batman and Lex is to Supes. Ending his story the way they did would be a big mistake IMO.

Regarding Doc Ock, SM2 ended with him being a good guy and taking control of his arms. It makes sense to me for him to come back as the evil SOB that he is in the comics. The artificial intelligence in his arms could have 'died', but not him.

its funny we've got such different opinions about this. for the sake of the movies, i think it would be a mistake to go back to those characters, when there are others to be shown. look at the x-men franchise, we can say that magneto is to the xmen what GG is to spidey, and joker is to batman, but did you not get tired of him being in every xmen movie?? especially when there are other great villains to be seen?

Multi-- I just started reading Sandman too. It was real hard for me to get past volume one also. I was like this is supposed to be a really legendary book, wtf? Now I'm way into it and can't believe I never picked it up back in the day. If they try to make Sandman into a film I'm afraid it will turn out like Mirrormask, visually stunning but otherwise a little blah and a little cirque de soleil.

I used to picture Tim Burton taking the reigns but now it's del Toro. But that's just because they are right in front of my face. Who should play Sandman himself? Don't say Johnny Depp.

@Betty: If I had it my way, a voice actor would play Morpheus and the character himself would be all CGI like Dr. Manhattan. It would make sense since he changes his appearance so often. I can't think of an actor that can assimilate all of Morpheus' mannerisms while still trying the make the role his 'own'. Same goes for the rest of the Endless.

I don't think del Toro is the right guy for a Sandman movie at all. Especially with Tim Burton still being around, it's right up his alley!

@CDB: I didn't have a problem with Magneto in three X-Men movies at all. I had a problem with how weak they showed his character. He always needed help or his plan wouldn't work. F*ck that's not the Magneto I remember reading about.

Yeah!! The Lizard, I hope it is not all CGI. I hate when they do that, they could mix great make-up and CGI. If there is a possible of both it would look really cool. They should have done that with Venom. I don't mind Mysterio, he is not one of my favorite but they could make it look really cool in the movie. I hope this makes up for SM3, the way they did Venom and hiring Topher Grace ruined that movie and when Peter was walking down the street like some Saturday Night Fever shit. I wanted to walk out!! Its sad to because I loved The Sandman.

@All: I'm sorry but I don't want Neal Gaiman's Sandman to be a movie. For fear of sounding like Alan Moore, I don't think that it would translate well to film. The books are amazing, but are so multi-layered that it would be so easy to mess up.

As for Spidey, I could see Campbell as Shocker.

I think the Death spin-offs are more apt to attract mainstream audiences and, more, make a decent movie. Sandman is a lasagna. I do not want them to make it a sandwich. If they did do a Sandman movie, I'd rather it be a new prologue or epilogue to the series itself. Maybe we could see Delight's descent into Delirium or check in on the new adventures of Daniel.

@Upipandaway. Well the thing about Sandman is Gaiman has said repeatedly that WB has his full suport for a Sandman movie, if he was to be involved in its adaption. It is by far my favorite series of all time, and I don't want it to be screwed up.

I think the story that would be the easiest to rasition to film would be the original Preludes and Nocturns, it would be the easiest to translate to film.

I would prefer a Death film, and I wrote a fan fic for one a while back, but I lost it when my computer was fried like the Colonels classic recipe.
But no Prologue or Epilouge, I never liked the ones with Daniel and if you did that no one in the audience except for the fans would know what was going on.

News about Spiderman 4 has been so erratic and crazy that I'm not going to concern myself with it until something official comes out.

@Lee & Hawk: I know. They're going to get made eventually. Sandman and Bone are two of my favorite comic stories. Sandman is just so rich that there are so many pieces to get wrong. My favorite book is Once and Future King and they still haven't been able to get that right.

Whatever they do, they need to break from the norm and focus on one Villain and one personal problem. Otherwise it will get all buggered up like SM3 and I just don't want to talk about that movie any more. If they are going to use the Lizard, they first need Dr. Connors to lose his arm and start his genetic replication research. I could see the start of that in 4, but it would be best left for 5 to allow a greater development of the story.

brazilianbatman- you do realize that these movies arent based on cartoons, they are based on books. and in the books the green goblin gets impaled by the goblin glider AND COMES BACK TO LIFE. and today the entire marvel universe revolves around Norman Osbourne so its kind of important for him to NOT BE DEAD. i would be totally okay with him coming back in the movies, in fact, im counting on it. i like lizard and scorpion for spiderman4 with Norman Osbourne as the "mysterious voice" pulling all the strings and manipulating peter parkers life from the shadows..... also i like black cat, not as a villian, but to add some sexiness to a flick that has ugly ass kirsten dunst as the main chick.

Batfan is right. We've had exhaustive discussions here and on every other comic-oriented board on the failures of Spider-man 3. I think most of us agree that we don't want to see those failures repeated.

There does seem to be a popular consensus that we want to see the Lizard and Kraven in the next film (I normally don't like two-villain movies, but these two would really complement each other well, imo). Lizard and Kraven also have simple origins that could be set up quickly and get us right into the action. One question: Hasn't Connors already lost the arm in the movies? That could lead us right into seeing him reaching his ill-fated breakthrough in regenerating it.
