First Word On The Last Airbender

AICN have two conflicting reviews from a very rough screening of M Night's big screen take on the Avatar:The Last Airbender cartoon..
Here are both reviews sent in to Harry over at AICN. Contains mild spoilers..

"Hey guys,

So I just watched The Last Airbender here in Phoenix, AZ! I thought I’d write a little something up for you guys to put on your site.

First off, I’ll state right from the start that I’ve never seen the TV show that this is based on, though I had heard of it so had an idea as to what to expect. I’ll also state that the movie is still REALLY rough. A lot of effects to finish, scenes to massage, and possibly (hopefully in a few cases) even scenes to reshoot. They’ve got some time, though. (At least the music sounded like a great James Newton Howard original, unlike other test screenings I’ve seen where it’s all music from previous movies.) Because it’s so rough, I don’t think it’s too fair of me to comment on my overall opinion of particular problems I had with the movie as most of them will undoubtedly be fixed by the time it’s released. At least I hope so. I will comment on a few specifics, though.

I’m assuming that the story is similar to that of the TV show so I won’t go into it, but it’s very clear – and was made even more clear by the guy speaking before the movie started – that this is the first of a trilogy. (Let’s hope it fares better than The Golden Compass so they actually get to make the other two.) This movie deals with Aang, the Avatar, learning to master water and stopping the firebenders from taking over everything. Aang is played by Noah Ringer who absolutely looks great in this role. For a kid carrying the film as the titular character, he does a great job for the most part. I’m convinced that with a few roughly edited and performed scenes fixed by the time it’s released, he’ll prove he’s worth his salt. It looks like this is his first movie too, so I’m even more impressed.

Shaun Toub plays Uncle Iroh and is totally one of THOSE guys who is in a million things but I never knew his name. Anyway, by far he is the BEST thing about the movie. Great character, great performance. And Dev Patel was also good as the cast out son of the fire lord. A lot of the others were neither here nor there for me, but I had a really hard time watching Jackson Rathbone, who plays Sokka. Talk about overacting. Not a fan of him in this film. Ugh. Here’s hoping they find a way to smooth his performance out, or at least downplay him a bit. (Then I have to keep telling myself that maybe he was cast to draw the tween and teen girls who love him in Twilight. Who knows…)

The action scenes work pretty well, but only one really stood out for me at this time, which takes place in an ancient airbender temple and had some nice set pieces. Plus it was fun to watch Noah Ringer’s double (a woman with a shaved head) performing the fight scenes – they hadn’t gotten around to doing a face replacement yet. The climactic end sequence was hard to judge because some was just so rough. Still, Aang managed to pull off some great work in this scene and when finished, I think it’ll be a great sequence with a definite Part I ending.

Overall, I think they have a fun-to-watch summer movie here. I’d put it more on the Narnia level rather than the Lord of the Rings level, but still it has a nice feel to it and unlike most of the other test screenings I’ve been to, I’m actually really looking forward to watching this one again when released to see how it looks in the end, and hoping I am not as bothered by Rathbone then. I’m hoping it’ll help Shyamalan get out of his rut, because I haven’t liked anything he’s done in quite a while (though I’m convinced that if he made Lady in the Water a children’s fantasy with the characters all kids, it would’ve worked and been accepted). Anyway, there’s my two cents.

The Movie Monkey"

Then there's this very negative take on the film...

"Harry,

Longtime reader of your site (since 98 or so) and I wanted to contribute what I experienced at my very first test screening.

I saw a test screening of The Last Airbender tonight at a theater in Glendale, Arizona. They said we were the 1st audience to see this, and based on what I saw, I hope it was the last audience because the movie was pretty horrible. I saw an extremely rough cut of the film (missing special effects and I assume music) but I seriously doubt they can go back and fix the acting.

Whoever cast this film should be taken to task, because, if this was the best group of actors you could assemble, I'd hate to see the ones you rejected. This was some of the most wooden acting I've ever seen. The lead child actor was the main culprit and he seemed amateurish compared to some of the others, his two friends weren't much better. Out of the adult actors, the guy who portrayed Commander Zhao should never be allowed to act again. His line reading was atrocious, especially when acting next to others such as Cliff Curtis (although he's been better) and Dev Patel . They were actually the only ones coming out of this one unscathed.

There were also some weird scenes here and there interjected throughout the movie. An oddly miss-placed scene featuring a foot massage as well as some corny attempts setting up romances. One scene that I laughed at (but was intended to be serious) is when a certain baddy punches a fish to death. The horror the horror!

The only redeeming value of it was the story which was pretty cool as it dealt with the different elements (Air, Water, Fire and Earth) and groups of people who are able to control it. I've never seen the tv show this was based on but I thought it was cool.

M. Night sets this one up for a sequel or two because I guess the Airbender has to 'learn' new elements (Fire and Earth) to complete his destiny. I doubt this series will get past this first one.

If you use this, call me Sharkfarts

BTW my friends said M. Night was in the audience, but I couldn't verify it."

Doesn't sound too good. But then, that's just one person's opinion about a very rough cut of the movie. Although, I wasn't that crazy about the positive one's comparison to those Narnia movies either! Anyway, the movie doesn't come out until July so plenty can change before then.

Nice stuff!

Not seen the TOON either, sounds a fun movie! Great find @ RORSTER!

And HARRY who lol?!?
LEEE777 - 2/4/2010, 7:09 AM
If the first reviewer had seen the show, he'd know that the overacting is VITAL to who Sokka is as a person. So I'm not worried about that ;)
SGA - 2/4/2010, 7:17 AM
Sounds like there are alot of benders in the movie :)
teabag - 2/4/2010, 7:41 AM
I have faith in M Night. I think he'll do a good job with the movie.
BmanHall - 2/4/2010, 7:51 AM

RorMachine - 2/4/2010, 8:11 AM
Avatar is the best American cartoon series since Batman TAS.

So glad Fox isn't doing this movie. At least we know it looks right with proper FX. I just hope M. Night has the right taste when it comes to the material.
fanboiii - 2/4/2010, 8:31 AM
It's hard to base a movie off of rough cuts. I agree that Sokka being "over the top" could be a good thing, if it is done in the context of the source material. If you haven't seen the show, then you won't get it. Of course, that isn't going to be viewed as good for those that haven't seen the show, so maybe it isn't a good thing, being the majority of the movie goers will probably be new to the show. Hmmm.... Lot's can be done in the next few months to fine-tune everything. Looking forward to it!
Ranger14 - 2/4/2010, 8:48 AM
How much stock do you put in a guy who goes by Sharfarts?

2 completely different reviews cancel each other out-still a wait & see.
DogsOfWar - 2/4/2010, 8:49 AM
Last AirBender.........Bender is also a name for a Futurerama character.....yep that a good enough excuse for this.......

:P
teabag - 2/4/2010, 8:49 AM
ror@ i agree, i may not see the movie either cause of the trailer, i feel like ive already seen it a thousand times
superdog - 2/4/2010, 9:10 AM
Loved the show, hate Shawarma, don't care about these two guys' opinions, this movie still looks good! Can't wait to see it. I'm not a Narnia fan but in regards to the fun factor being similar, i think that's just fine. I'd never expect Lord of the Rings out of Shawarma.

GAWD i'm happy i can't hear a thing at work. That stupid Wolfman trailer and SAW6 screwed my weekend over. And i was only online for about an hour's time! It would be cool if there could be different trailers poppin' out every single time instead of the same damn shit!
Shaman - 2/4/2010, 9:18 AM
Loved the TV show! Hope this holds a candle to it and it should be ok.
BigDB67 - 2/4/2010, 9:19 AM
i for one am a HUGE fan of this series
if it's done wrong i will be starting a riot
in the theater opening night
if anyone would like to join me
please contact my twitter
DeMoNaSsDiZ
and we shall organize a proper
plan of destruction
if it does well, then we shall hug
in a joyous manner and run
naked through the streets screaming out
the awesomeness that was the movie

DeMoNaSsDiZ - 2/4/2010, 9:48 AM
lmao I love how each reviewer made sure to state, 'Okay, I've never seen the show...' I'm also to the point that anyone who describes a person's acting as 'wooden' I will no longer hear anything they have to say. Anymore, that's like summing it up as 'they sucked', too simple an explanation and I demand clarity. Glad to hear dude in the first review talk about how awesome Iroh is, he's one of my favorite characters in the show.

PS, I agree with the trailer's. CBM, add some variety to that shit. Do something to make that window cycle through several trailers. I know there are more than one preview folks around here are interested in.
TheMyth - 2/4/2010, 9:53 AM
R @ DOG @ ; p

TEA @ You bender! : D

LEBOWSKI @ Cool i will dude!!
LEEE777 - 2/4/2010, 10:06 AM
God I love Adblock-I don't even see this trailer that is driving everyone nuts
DogsOfWar - 2/4/2010, 10:20 AM
Never let a good bender go to waist i say :)
teabag - 2/4/2010, 10:20 AM
I was also a part of this test screening and the selected focus group afterwards and i gotta say... M Night needed this movie.

It's no epic, and has flaws that will be smoothed, but very good feeling of a movie.

And M night WAS at the screening...he walked right by us and i nodded to him.

Gotta love Bender

Wait, Bender? I don't even know her!

Thank you, I'll be here all week, try the veal
DogsOfWar - 2/4/2010, 10:28 AM
Ok I Would takes Harry Review Over that other Guy.

1.) Harry is an Official well Known Movie Reviewer.

2.) You Don't know if the second guy already hated the idea of the movie. The White-washing and Racebending conflict.

3.) Its a REALLY REALLY Rough Cut

Wait, and see I say
KnightGambit - 2/4/2010, 10:36 AM
This movie well blow...just like Dragonball evolution..it was based on a great tv show, and was happy that they were making a movie of it until they change the ethnic of the characters...They were supose to be asians and aboriginals, if you see the art work that inspired the tv shows you'll know there race...the main character is supose to be chinese and the two water ppl are supose to be aboriginal NOT WHITE. The baddies are supose to be asian not indian...guess thats wat you get when u have an indian director.
xXkryptoniteXx - 2/4/2010, 10:49 AM
The second dude sounds like he's upset about it being a ROUGH CUT. I'd say the first review certainly sounds more objective. Now only if he had seen the show he would know that Sokka is supposed to be over-the-top!

My two main concerns:

1) Is Noah Ringer playing Aang too seriously? Aang was definitely serious at times but when he wasn't whooping ass he was a f*ckin clown!....I hope he's taking that part of the character as seriously as he is the fighting.

2) Is Appa going to be done right? Appa is a character in the cartoon, not merely a mode of transportation. He is bonded with Aang on a VERY deep level. He can't be some Never Ending Story knock off. He has to be a member of the team, with an opinion, and a vote.
Talontd - 2/4/2010, 10:49 AM
I loved the cartoon and I can't wait until July.
MIDAS - 2/4/2010, 11:13 AM
@Talontd
I'm wondering about Appa too. They can't screw that up.
MIDAS - 2/4/2010, 11:15 AM
@kryptonite

What the f*ck are you on about? Aboriginal??? Sorry mate, Water tribe were stone cold Inuit. The Inuit are racially descended from the Mongolian groups in eastern Asia.

As for the Fire tribe, is it really such a strech??? Read a book, look at a map, or somethin, cause all that separates the two are Nepal.

As for Sokka and Katara, M.Night has said he wasn't making the movie without Nicola Peltz, as he was so impressed by her. So, understanding that, it only makes sense to cast her brother of the same race. Now I doubt there were lines of Inuit children at the auditions hoping for their chance, but even if there were, he picked his favorite, she happened to be white......cry me a river.

Toph hasn't been cast yet, she could very well be Asian which will hopefully stop everyone from crying about RACE.

There is no conspiracy.

Once you get over your incessant pessimism you should see that most of his choices make sense...
Talontd - 2/4/2010, 11:20 AM
I can't take the review of someone who has never seen the cartoon seriously. I'll wait to see more on the complete movie.
thwhtGuardian - 2/4/2010, 11:37 AM
I know what this thread needs.....booty =)

Talontd - 2/4/2010, 11:47 AM
xxXkryptoniteXx@ if you are going to let the race of the actors interfere with what could be a very good movie..I don't know what to tell you. In watching the series, not once did I even relate any of the characters to a specific race, so I can't relate to where you are coming from. Race is not referred to at all in the show. One can draw their own conclusions, if they like, but to let that affect your ability to enjoy the movie?

Sakko and Katara are from the South Pole in the world of Avatar. Am I going to be upset that they didn't cast two Inuits for the parts? Nope. In the show there is only a slight difference in skin tone between Aang and his friends, so I am not going to lose sleep over the "race" card. Who says that the Fire Nation is Asian? The only thing we do know about the culture of the show is that it is based off of the Asian-influenced world of martial arts. The show deals with those cultural philosophies and leaves "race" out of it. I studied the martial arts and Asian culture for years, but it doesn't make me Asian.

I think some people are making way too much of the race thing. In my opinion, the series was meant to show the different cultural philosophies and bending techniques, not a racial segregation of people and that is why I liked it. It's about the philosophy and practice of various arts as opposed to the difference in races.
Ranger14 - 2/4/2010, 11:48 AM
KnightGambit....

That was not Harry's review. That was the opening to a letter. If you read the whole thing, you would know that the reviewer said to call himself Sharkfarts.
SGA - 2/4/2010, 11:49 AM
About the wooden acting thing...

Why does MNight like his actors to do this? He seems to prefer that they don't emote. I know that most people suppress their emotions but you need to let actors use their face muscles.
Betty - 2/4/2010, 12:08 PM
Geez PLEASE don't let this be another Dragonball Evolution! I honestly feel that good cartoons should never be put in live action form.
InstigatorGIRL - 2/4/2010, 12:19 PM
hello sexy orthodontist.
Betty - 2/4/2010, 12:33 PM
I don't trust either review Betty. they both stated that they never watched the show, so their already suspect, and further more we have no knowledge of what their tastes in movies are to compare these reviews with their others because they're just some nameless talking heads.
thwhtGuardian - 2/4/2010, 12:38 PM
Yep. This movie is gonna be LAME!
mativ16 - 2/4/2010, 1:13 PM
have you seen the super bowl spot? looks fantastic
SGA - 2/4/2010, 1:32 PM
Well, like SGA points out Sokka is supposed to be a very overacted character. And even though I won't be surprised if some of the cast drops hard in this. Lets face the facts, it was never really the strongest line-up. With the great response to it and the pro voice actors they had onboard for the animated series, you should think that they could have found better actors for the roles...

But I still have confidence in Shy-man-lhama making a good movie. I don't really know why, maybe because I have only seen his good films except for 'lady in th water', which I thought was an okay movie in some ways.
LuckyKid90 - 2/4/2010, 2:53 PM
I can't wait for this movie, the show is awesome and actually very smart, there's some stuff in there that i wouldnt think young kids would get, like how in old China they beleived that lightning was a form of fire, therefore in the show, the best of the best fire-benders can emitt lightning.. or eathbender at their best can bend metal, or that water benders can bend humans to do their will because of the ammount of water in the body.. that's something i hope they hold to, that intelligence throughout the movie trilogy
TheGrinch - 2/4/2010, 4:07 PM
In regards to the Sokka character, he's supposed to be an obnoxious jackass until he meets a sword master who teaches him discipline and patience (one of the GREATEST parts of the story is how well the writers strung along the personal development of all the characters ESPECIALLY Prince Zuko).
MrJosh - 2/5/2010, 8:01 AM
the second one dosent know that sokka is suppose to over act well they should just watch the cartoon to see if its like the cartoon
