Despite a serious lack of Panthro promotion, the new Thundercats series is looking good. And now we have a date to mark in our diaries; Friday, July 29. The show will begin with an hour long special at 8 PM Eastern and then follow with weekly half hour episodes from August 5. Also, fans will be able to get an early look at the premiere ep during Comic-Con International in San Diego, where Warner Brothers Animation will screen the hour-long special during their panel on Friday, July 22.

Here is the press release..

ThunderCats, one of the most beloved cartoons of the 1980s and a continuing cultural force, comes to Cartoon Network in an all-new contemporary reimagining of the iconic animated series. Set as an epic tale, ThunderCats tells the story of a hero’s journey to fulfill his ultimate destiny. The series begins with an hour-long special premiere event on Friday, July 29, at 8 p.m. (ET, PT). Following the premiere, the show will air regularly on Cartoon Network Friday nights at 8:30 p.m. (ET, PT) beginning August 5.

Thunder, Thunder, ThunderCats! Ho!! On Third Earth, the kingdom of Thundera is being threatened by the evil sorcerer Mumm-Ra, and Lion-O, the young heir to the throne, embarks on a great quest to take his rightful place as king. The unlikely champion must work with his faithful comrades Tygra, Cheetara, Panthro, WilyKit, WilyKat, and his loyal pet, Snarf, who join him on his journey to save their world from darkness. From Warner Bros. Animation (WBA), ThunderCats is executive produced by Sam Register (Teen Titans, Ben 10, The Looney Tunes Show), with Michael Jelenic (Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Wonder Woman) and Ethan Spaulding (Avatar: The Last Airbender) producing.

To celebrate the premiere, ThunderCats will have a significant presence at Comic-Con International: San Diego. A panel scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Friday, July 22 in room 6A will include an exclusive screening of the hour-long series premiere. Producers Michael Jelenic, Ethan Spaulding and art director Dan Norton will participate in a subsequent panel discussion and answer questions from fans. Coinciding with Comic-Con, Cartoon Network will also air nine episodes from the classic ThunderCats series over the weekend of July 23. Boomerang will also host a classic ThunderCats marathon on July 16 and 17 and air the series every day at 5 p.m. starting Monday, July 18.

Cartoon Network digital adds to the ThunderCats experience with online content including the free game, “Thundera Run,” launching on CartoonNetwork.com July 18. Additionally, a free “Party Pack” from Warner Bros Animation will be available for download and will include everything a true fan needs to host the ultimate ThunderCats viewing party.

I hope it's good! The original sucks in retrospect. It's not easy to watch the old cartoons from childhood and retain that same greatness.

I hope Young Justice is back by then.

I cringe every time I see "re-imagining", because it almost always means "ruining whatever made the original cool". Still, I have been curious about this new Thundercats series, and I do appreciate being alerted to its debut date. I certainly plan to give this show a fair chance. I'm hoping it's as good as the original, or even better, if that's possible.

My gfs gay cousin is going to love this.

I love how a guy that writes main DC cartoons can't understand what makes the original so special....

--a group of powerful and royal aliens flee their dying planet and crash land on earth to make it their homeworld

-- a young Warrior , is given the mantle and responsibility of leader of his remaining race and given a powerful weapon and powers that he must learn to responsibly master .

yet......he can't make it work in his own mind and has to "reinvent" the concept and tweak it...

W...T....F.....

Dude, read some Joseph Campbell for gods sake and come back and tell me why you need to change anything with that.....well except snarf.

I'll check it out with my kids. But Im not really digging in the art. They all could have been much better. Tigra is cool but the rest need to go back to the drawling board.
thedon786 - 6/28/2011, 4:15 PM
wicked.
Planeswalker - 6/28/2011, 4:24 PM
Snarf! Awesome! The Wiley twins! Double awesome!

And by that I mean this will be shit because some asshole decided there needs to be a comic element to a story that could have been most epic.

Pass.
sheebz - 6/28/2011, 4:34 PM
huge fan of the original series, hoping this will be just as good...
kevberg - 6/28/2011, 7:38 PM

@Deathmetalbrian

quote ", why would you want to do something a bit cooler and not corner yourself into using the same 7 characters forever because of the fleeing the planet storyline. that didn't get old fast the first time."

What a stupid statement.

First of all, the characters are well liked because of that story and the characters...they hold up because theres a strong story fundamental story element that runs through the show ...hence my original statement.

second,...Im not talking about dumbing down the DIALOGUE , Im specifically talking about the story elements the writer , Jelenic, wanted to change that are totally unneeded.

And Oh yeah , i do own a couple DVD sets and the writing is still better than a lot of the tripe on cartoon network these days.

I don't need a retread of the same old anime horseshit contrivances wedged into a story that doesn't need it.

Hell yeah! I'm taking the day off for this. Love the Thundercats.
