Lauren Shuler-Donner Says X-Men 4 Is A Long Time Away, Updates On The Wolverine & Deadpool

The Producer reveals some more about the status of two highly anticipated spin-offs from the disappointing X-Men Origins: Wolverine. She also says X4 might happen but "way in the future"..

We have heard quite a bit from Donner over the last few days as X-Men: First Class geared up for it's Blu-ray release. And speaking to Popcornbiz she doesn't reveal too much we haven't heard already but does elaborate on the status of both The Wolverine and Deadpool, claiming that she would not make a solo movie of "The Merc With The Mouth" without Ryan Reynolds. She also says that if we do ever see X-Men 4 it will be a long time away.

“I’m focusing on ‘The Wolverine’ and possibly ‘Deadpool.’ That's enough for now. I don't think we want to over-saturate the market. I think if we had six 'X-Men' movies out there nobody would want to see them.”

“We're figuring out where we're going to shoot it and working on the budget and the script and all that sort of stuff – we're in good prep. Hugh and I wanted to do this originally. I showed him ‘The Wolverine Saga' and we're both very passionate about it, for years now, and so, yes, we're very excited to get this to the screen finally. It's a great story.”

So Ryan Reynolds is still very much locked in to play Deadpool then?

“Absolutely – I wouldn't make 'Deadpool' without Ryan, I wouldn't be involved. He's been extremely involved in the process. He was involved with the script. He worked with the writers, throwing out a lot of ideas. We have a great director in Tim Miller from 'Blur' and will give it a different kind of look than all the other movies. Its tone is insane. Oh, it's really funny. It's outrageous, irreverent, violent. I mean – It's Deadpool!”

A while ago word (rumor?) hit that we would be seeing a fourth installment of the franchise that started all of this mutant mayhem. Hopefully going some way to redeem the failings of Brett Ratner's X-Men: The Last Stand. But if that does happen, Donner says it wont be anytime soon..

“In the future – way in the future – would I like to do an 'X-Men 4'? I would, but again there's no reason to saturate the market. So I would say no – I'm happy with what I'm doing right now.”

Well, at least there are plans for it eventually. Sorta. Would you guys even like to see a continuation of Fox's original X-Men movies? And if so what story would you like it to follow?

If Singer stuck to X3 then he wouldn't have ruined two CBM franchises, his original plan of the Phoenix rising up and Wiping out San Francisco, Thats what you expect from the Phoenix total carnage.
marvel72 - 9/14/2011, 5:06 AM
so no chance of them doing a time travel story with cable & bishop trying to sort out the f*cked up timelines............shame.
Blagyver - 9/14/2011, 5:10 AM
I kind of get the vibe that Deadpool is one of, if not the only, comic book character roles Ryan Reynolds has taken on that he is legitimately passionate about. Not to say that he half-asses every other one, just that he actually has a desire to expand the character.
KungFuKoala - 9/14/2011, 5:16 AM

I think the Cable and Bishop story would be great on screen. Would also be nice to see some new faces.
GAC - 9/14/2011, 5:19 AM
Looking forward to The Wolverine and Deadpool movies for sure! They'll definitley make X-Men sequels until the become unprofitable. I laugh when these execs say they're unsure if they'll continue with these profitable franchises. Any exec that would seriously consider NOT moving forward with a profitable franchise would be fired! This is a business first and foremost.
SeaSerpentine - 9/14/2011, 5:25 AM
I watched First Class yesterday, and it was pretty good.
Forilaz - 9/14/2011, 5:30 AM
Same shit, different day.

[frick] it. Let it die. Ready for a new Wolverine too.
GodzillaKart - 9/14/2011, 5:32 AM
I mean, the first two were great in their time, but...turn off the life support.
Jefferys - 9/14/2011, 5:33 AM
I used to like this woman and then she she doesn't want an a fourth X-Men movie so now I'm having second thoughts on whether I can trust her again. She broke my heart once, I can't let her do it again.
SuperSomething616 - 9/14/2011, 5:36 AM
Why would X4 be needed....I thought Xmen: First class was suppose to rejuvenate the Xmen franchise...

Stupid Fox...just give up and pass the reigns back to Marvel for petes sake!!!
GUNSMITH - 9/14/2011, 5:36 AM

RorMachine - 9/14/2011, 5:44 AM
Yeah yeah, "back to Marvel!", "Let it die" etc. Do I really need to remind you guys what was said when X-Men: First Class was announced? And that only turned out to be the best CBM of the Summer.
RadicalDuck - 9/14/2011, 5:52 AM
@RorMachine-well said!

Also to the people who keep saying that Spider-Man and X-Men rights should go back to Marvel: yes, we know they should! But harping on about it isn't going to change it. The studios aren't just going to relinquish the rights to some very lucrative projects just because you say they least not any time soon.
supes77 - 9/14/2011, 6:05 AM
I kinda want another xmen movie because i really want to see more of Kelsey Grammar as Beast. I thought he was great, a real highlight of X3 and would love to see some more of him on screen!!! (I also love grammar, i think he is really underrated as an actor)
ballstothewall - 9/14/2011, 6:11 AM
I really [frick]in hated the black plain leather coustumes fox made. It looks like shit. [frick] X4 make a deadpool movie instead.
cyclopstb - 9/14/2011, 6:13 AM
Don't take too long to make X4. Everybody's getting older.
Solomon - 9/14/2011, 6:23 AM
Don't even want X4 anymore, X3 messed it up too much...

Just give us a First Class sequel!

That's what she said they're doing so no need to be so angry.
MovieTheaterLad - 9/14/2011, 6:24 AM

I liked those costumes because they actually looked like uniforms that a para-military organization would wear.

After, as Cyclops said "What did you expect? Yellow spandex?"
sinchsw - 9/14/2011, 6:43 AM
@Kung[frick]oala - yes, then they could use time travel as an excuse to fix the timeline. Get Cyclops back at least. Do a version of days of future past perhaps.
MaddMonkk - 9/14/2011, 6:49 AM
Ellen Page is a tiny little tart ain't she.
Fogs - 9/14/2011, 6:59 AM
They could have a story set in the future, with Wolverine, Cable, Bishop, Forge, etc against sentinels.
Ha1frican - 9/14/2011, 7:06 AM
deadpool better happen, no first class sequel it got nearly every character horribly wrong accept magneto
Ranger14 - 9/14/2011, 7:37 AM
Like I have said many times here, they will move forward from First Class and that will be the "reboot" of the franchise. We will never see an X4 based on the prior films' continuity.
marvel72 - 9/14/2011, 8:07 AM
x-men first class was best reveiwed cbm of the year, but wasn't the best.

captain america was the comic book movie of the year.
Merry - 9/14/2011, 8:17 AM
I liked 'First Class' but I'm not really hopeful for the future of this franchise, cos there are soo many X-Men related films; Wolverine (which I think wont do so good, cos of the first 1), Deadpool (Reynold's is just annoying now) n X-Men 4? Come on, it's a little too late Fox
GiftedYoungster - 9/14/2011, 8:22 AM
Ha, she does knows actors don't live forever right?
LucasMend - 9/14/2011, 8:45 AM
If FOX keep doing the movies, I would rather see a X-Men 4 with cyclops back and everyone against apocalypse or mister sinister. and not having all the focus on wolverine
Jordanstine - 9/14/2011, 9:10 AM

I'm not too sure about that.

All the 3rd film of a Comic Book Movies with a Trilogy tend to always suck:

- Superman III
- Batman Forever
- Spider-Man 3
- X-Men Last Stand

It's a curse! Reason why I'm not as excited for Dark Knight Rises as I normally would (set pics didn't impress me much either), but hopefully it will break the mold.

The fact that they're sitting on X-Men 4 for a long time is pathetic. Sure, I'm stoked for Deadpool and The Wolverine like anyone else, but why do I feel the X-Men: First Class prequels are gonna start off promising, then dive into Star Wars prequel territory.

Maybe it IS time to give the rights back to Marvel. Let Deadpool interact with Taskmaster.
Saifir - 9/14/2011, 9:25 AM

im with u,hope one day Marvel gets it back and reboot all the stuff and make the first movie
with the original team , ice man ,cyclops, jean, beast and angel, against magneto, and then 2nd part like in the comic, they get kidnapp by a bigger threat and then wolverine, colossus, nightcrawler, banshee ,storm coming. and so on and on making the sentinels coming in the 3rd movie as the first triology.
singer ruined it the franchise by mixing that story and characters differently.
thought xmen 2 was the best among all. especially that short scene with colossus transforming.
still i think marvel can make a much better comic adaption out of it! maybe also with better costumes and not this standard black leather overalldress lol
(and not always magneto as the enemy)
jjmeylar - 9/14/2011, 9:44 AM
Good stuff.
MovieTheaterLad - 9/14/2011, 9:46 AM

In my opinion, Batman Forever and Spider-Man 3 were wonderful. X-Men 3 was okay. Didn't see Superman 3.
marvel72 - 9/14/2011, 9:51 AM
@ captainamerica

whats so funny, its could an opinion it was the best reveiwed cbm of the year, but i didn't think it was the best.

so whats your point.

djohnpi - 9/14/2011, 10:04 AM
Let this BS die to include XFC and give it back to Marvel. JUST A WISH
marvel72 - 9/14/2011, 10:08 AM
^ "called" an opinion f*ck knows why i wrote could.
Rulk - 9/14/2011, 10:17 AM
Reynolds was HORRIBLE as the Green Lantern. But something tells me he was born to play Deadpool..
