Mark Millar Responds To Frank Miller's Anti Occupy Wall Street Rant

Or more accurately, he responds to the response to it! On his blog the writer, who is worlds apart politically from his similarly sur-named colleague, says he disagree with Miller's views but is more shocked by the backlash to them..

If you haven't read Frank Miller's rant against the Occupy Wall Street protests you can do so HERE. It's admittedly pretty ridiculous. As far as I'm concerned he hamstrings any valid points he might wish to put across with what is verging on paranoid insanity. But that's just my opinion, obviously some agree with him, some don't. But in the "don't" camp there are those that have really hit back hard against Miller and even some who have called for boycotts of the writer's work etc. This doesn't sit to well with Mark Millar who posted the following to Millarworld..

It’s strange to watch your favourite writer getting strips torn off him for a couple of days.

Politically, I disagree with his analysis, but that’s besides the point. I wasn’t shocked by his comments because they’re no different from a lot of commentators I’ve seen discussing the subject. What shocked me was the vitriol against him, the big bucket of shit poured over the head by even fellow comic-book creators for saying what was on his mind.

Obviously, it’s within their rights to exercise the First Amendment as much as it was within Frank’s to make the original point. But there’s something so distasteful about that cyber-mob mentality that revolts me. It’s not just that I like the guy, that his body of work is among the best the industry has ever seen. It’s the GLEE I’m seeing from some people and, worse, the calls I’ve seen to boycott his work because his perspective on a point differs from yours and mine.

I’m reminded of the time, in the heated period leading up to the Gulf War, when over a thousand people signed a cyber-petition to have me fired from Marvel because I disagreed with the war in Iraq as a response to 9/11. Bill Jemas, quite bravely, bounced this back saying that one of the things he liked about America is that you can say what you like without fear that you’re going to lose your job. Liberalism doesn’t mean throwing guys in jail who DISAGREE with your liberalism. It means accepting that society is richer when everybody has a voice. Starting economic sanctions against a writer until they shut up and agree with you is horrific.

I dunno. I just hate a mob. I think it demeans us. I also hate a bandwagon and would urge my fellow left-wing readers to boycott Miller no less than HP Lovecraft, Steve Ditko, David Mamet or any other writer who might not share my personal philosophy, but who’s work I’m happy to have on my shelves.

While I agree with this for the most part, and certainly don't condone any boycotts of Miller's work, I think there is a bit more to be addressed and be annoyed about that just an anti OWS opinion. Like I said parts of Miller's rant are so hate filled and hyperbolic ("louts, thieves, rapists") and basically slanderous that it was always going to provoke some strong backlash. What do you guys think?

I wish Frank no harm. His comic art/writing is brilliant. I JUST WON'T BE BUYING ANY OF IT EVER AGAIN. We've all been screwed over by the richest, greediest people on the planet and we're still bailing them out. This has NOTHING to do with anti-Americanism or fear of other countries or their religions. I LOVE America. I'm PROUD to be British. The ordinary citizens of both these countries are being fed constant LIES about the things our Governments are doing. This has to STOP.

Miller has his own political views, Millar responded because he knows that his political belief is somewhat conflicting with what Millers opinion, we have our own political views on this matter.........what is the difference?

I agree with Mark Millar. Mobs suck. Putting people out of a job because they disagree with you is ridiculous and pretty [frick]ing scary. Art is not restricted to liberal philosophy. As much as I like the "Occupy" movement, I do worry sometimes that it'll turn into something like the French Revolution. The best way to test out the steel of your ideas and beliefs is to have them challenged. That is never going to happen if you just read what you agree with.

Yes Miller's rant was pretty brutal but you know what? I don't know him. He doesn't know me. Why should I take it personally? The only answer is, I shouldn't.

And also at the same time, being a pretty dedicated gamer, I'm familiar with these internet boycotts. They don't work. Left 4 Dead 2, Modern Warfare 3, should I continue listing blockbusters that were boycotted?

marz66 - 11/15/2011, 5:25 AM
meh. Again,Frank is entitled to his opinion.Free speech and all,but with that being said, it doesn't mean that one shouldn't face the consequences of such an action. People have the RIGHT to boycott you,if they DISAGREE with your views.Freedom,is a power and as we all here know,"With great power comes great responsibility". It's a TWO WAY street.
I myself,disagree with Miller on his opinion,but will I stop buying of his stuff?Maybe. If it's GOOD,I'm going buy it.No doubt.However if it's shite,then I'm not even gonna bother.

Know matter what our great CBM articles are about, be it they're underwhealming or outright brilliant, we can always count on @tea to make the comments section worth viewing. Cheers man! And about this whole OWS thing... I don't wqatch the news, so I'm not informed about anything.

everyone named millar and miller should get together and decide which version to go with.

Millar, Miller and Boobs...Awesome!!
fedup - 11/15/2011, 5:56 AM
This is the first thing Millar's written in a long time that I've enjoyed, lol. It's way too easy to demonize people we disagree with.
JDUKE25 - 11/15/2011, 6:01 AM
yeah......I don't really care.
mmjoseph - 11/15/2011, 6:06 AM
I stopped reading after"cyber mob mentality". mr. millars assumption of how many responded and quick defense of frank is suspect. we are all practicing our rights. many died and were tortured for that right.
JackBauer - 11/15/2011, 6:08 AM
While I respect Frank Miller for speaking his mind, I respect Mark Millar even more for what he said. Some people on both the left and the right, but mostly on the left, immediately attack anyone that disagrees with their opinion.

If your stance is strong enough you shouldn't fear what someone else says. Ignore it and move on or offer a different opinion. You certainly have the right not to purchase goods or services from that person. In the case of Frank Miller or Mark Millar, don't buy their comics or see their movies, but don't organize protests or boycotts just because you want to teach that person a lesson for disagreeing with you. That goes against the concept of free speech.

We have the same problem on this site. There are people on here that want to report others just because they state an opinion that differs from theirs. So what if someone doesn't think TDK was the best movie ever made and is overrated? Either engage in a friendly debate or ignore it instead of being a whiner and reporting them or immediately resorting to name calling.

AlanWarlock - 11/15/2011, 6:15 AM
What is it in Frank Miller's blog that you believe to be "slanderous"? Name one thing he says that isn't accurate. There have been reports of both rape and theft in "Occupy" camps throughout the country. Whether or not someone is a "lout" is a matter of opinion, and opinion cannot be the basis of a slander action.

I don't defend Miller's opinions. I believe Frank Miller may have been so deeply affected by the attacks on the World Trade Center in his beloved New York that he has developed a tunnel-vision mentality that prevents him from seeing anything else. But I also believe the "Occupy" movement, by and large, has not and will not accomplish anything because it is simply a group of sitters who haven't mobilized to do something that will cause real change. We're finally hearing of political candidates who are "Occupy" candidates, much as the Tea Party gave way to the birth of "Tea Party candidates." It's only when these people engage in the political process that their goals are going to start on the road to achievement.

Mark Millar can look down his nose at the opinions of people on the Internet all he wants. He's nothing more than a guy who's found a way to pitch Hollywood with comic books.
SuperPickle - 11/15/2011, 6:16 AM
Free speech and expression goes both ways. We're free to lash out verbally at something that bothers us, but so is our audience when they don't like what they hear. Frank Miller offended a LOT of people and they deserve to have him hear their response in the form of boycotting his work. Personally, I've "boycotted" it for the last fifteen years or so because it hasn't been that impressive. "Dark Knight Returns" and "Sin City" was about it. His screenplays haven't been stellar, his GN's have been "meh". Now he flies off the handle like a lock-step political republican and shits all over a large portion of his fan base.

GRAND douchebaggery there, Frank. Now he gets to hear those fans' freedom of expression.

It works both ways. Public figures, especially artists and creative types must understand they don't get a free pass to be dicks. We get to crap on them in return.
kevberg - 11/15/2011, 6:22 AM
Hey Ror,

"Like I said parts of Miller's rant are so hate filled and hyperbolic ("louts, thieves, rapists") and basically slanderous that it was always going to provoke some strong backlash. What do you guys think? "

Ok so I guess you missed the reports of Rape, the riots , folks setting things on fire in oakland, more rapes, guys getting killed and folks looting other folks stuff at the tents and protests?

So, in that light you're wrong and your bias would be stunning if I confused this piece as journalism.

Im actually surprised I agree with Millar .

But thats Ok keep attacking folks with whom you disagree.

and @Cross, you're a friggin moron.

Miller was right. Its a group of spoiled brats being preyed upon by their own.
BigTodd71 - 11/15/2011, 6:24 AM
I'm sure I'll get flamed for this but I think miller is right for the most part... buncha whiney bitches that are mad that someone else made money because they went out and earned it. They didn't sit around demanding that someone else give it to them. They set out to work for it, invest it and take huge risks and reap huge rewards that is the american way. They are demanding the Soviet way and we all know how that ended... it always ends that way
kevberg - 11/15/2011, 6:24 AM
@tea
BTW, thanks for the tits :)
daveB - 11/15/2011, 6:24 AM
Nothing wrong with Frank Millers statements. Aside from louts, thieves and Rapists, it had also a murder. The police should have cleared the mobs long ago. They stopped being protesters when they took property hostage.
They need to go back to mom's basements
RorMachine - 11/15/2011, 6:25 AM
Alan, did Miller say "there have been reports of rape and theft", no he said THEY ARE a bunch or thieves and rapists. I also find it hilarious that he brings terrorism into it like there is some slavering Islamic boogeyman rubbing his hands together in delight as America turns on itself. He's living in one of his own [frick]ing stories, and he calls the OWS folk delusional? The man's a headcase imo. But yeah, I couldn't put that in the article:)
MassExecutions - 11/15/2011, 6:30 AM
Wait...WHAT?!?! Did Mark Millar say something classy, reasonable, and not purely self promoting?!?!

Well...rock and roll. Good for him. I mean, none of us should put a lot of stock in what either of them say. They are just comic book writers. But still, way to keep the conversation open.
RorMachine - 11/15/2011, 6:34 AM
Kevberg, lmao, I am attacking someone I don't agree with? Me? By saying I don't agree with the man generalizing the group as rapists? Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. But then in dealing with you on these forums I find that is too much to expect from you anyway. I never shy away from giving my opinions on certain things in certain articles, never have never will. If you don't like it lump it.
RorMachine - 11/15/2011, 6:40 AM
I think some right wingers on here seem to think I'm left. I'm not. I actually use my brain. In this life there should be things you are liberal about and things you are conservative about and if you always fall back on a certain way of thinking in every situation just because it's in line with your politics, how you were raised, whatever..I think that is crazy. And dangerous. In saying that generally, and I mean GENERALLY, not always,m I do tend to enjoy conversing with more liberal minded people because I find them to also be more open minded, humane and caring. Then on the other hand I find conversing with conservatives makes me want to set fire to them. Generally:)
MassExecutions - 11/15/2011, 6:42 AM
Ror - Just out of curiosity, what's your favorite liberal leaning political idea?
Tevii - 11/15/2011, 6:44 AM
first off... thank you for that tea.

Second, normally I hate Millar's rants, but this time, good for him. People these days seem to want to lynch anybody with an opposing view. That's not what this country is about. You're allowed to speak your mind here. Then hopefully two opposing views can ignite conversation that can potentially result in a better answer than either side had previously.

But the internet has allowed every pussy on the planet to be a "telephone tough guy" so they hate on everything. (Most of the time they just hate on things so they can say a witty one-liner.)
daveB - 11/15/2011, 6:45 AM
Ror, if the thefts and rapes and other vile behavior happend once or twice it would be wrong to stain all with it. But when it happens repeatedly and in almost every city the louts were in it then become ok to generalize.
Aside from that, I can tell many people here have never had to fight terror. Facts are, the terrorist WANT TO KIL US. Nothing wrong with stating the obvious.
CrashTest - 11/15/2011, 6:49 AM
I wouldn't of had a problem with what Frank said, everyone has a right to their own opinion, we all know that.

But Miller with this statement,
“Occupy” is nothing but a pack of louts, thieves, and rapists, an unruly mob, fed by Woodstock-era nostalgia and putrid false righteousness. These clowns can do nothing but harm America"

He dosent sate that there have been reports of rap and thefts, he stats that Occupy is nothing but a pac of louts, thieves and rapists. How can he label a entire group like that? Miller shouldn't have said that, he offend allot to people who have friends and Family out there for the right reasons.

Of course in every group, you will have those who are just there to be there. His choice of words were very unprofessional and I for one will not be spending my money on anyones work who shits on people standing up for something that they believe in.
espnfx - 11/15/2011, 6:50 AM
teabag... you've brought up some valid points... Kudos! And thank you, from across the pond.
