While speaking to Bleeding Cool about his Elite Squad movies Padhila also dropped a few more details about his planned remake of Paul Verhoven's Robocop, a movie steeped just as much in social commentary as it was action. He confirms that his version will follow a similar path by stating that it will be about a man being turned into a product by a corporation.. But he also gives some intriguing hints about the actual plot and what type of future we can expect to see Alex Murphy police..

Wars in the future are going to be fought with drones. We won’t send a plane with a pilot in, it will be drone. It’s getting that way now and ten years from now that’s how wars are going to be fought. But what if a drone goes wrong – who is to blame then? Do you blame the drone? And that problem asks if you can you consider a robot guilty of a crime. Or is it the corporation that made the robot that is guilty? How do you fight back against drones when you don’t have drones?

Padhila also says that the movie is “in soft prep” and he is “about to get on a plane and going to Los Angeles to start talking about casting.”. Michael Fassbender was rumored to be sought after for the role of Alex Murphy but Padhila seemed to debunk that. Of course that doesn't mean he definitely isn't a contender. More info and updates as ewe have em but for now how do you guys think this remake/reboot is shaping up? Do you like the idea of it at all?

i'd go for the younger guy for the title role on this reboot though.
ThaMessenger07 - 12/1/2011, 7:49 AM
This sounds awesome! I just hope it lay in the line on Central politics and doesn't lean and specific direction....

Reboot is unnecessary, but if it is going to happen:

Armie Hammer to play Lone Ranger Pictures, Images and Photos
AlexdoxA - 12/1/2011, 7:58 AM

" How do you fight back against drones when you don’t have drones?"

OK THAT JUST WENT RIGHT THROUGH ME CAUSE I SO DIDN'T CATCH THAT......OK WHAT DID HE SAY?

What made the original so great was the cast, and the great lines. That's what a lot of remakes are missing. They seem to be just focusing on the Flash. I want that same feeling from the original. After watching the movie I want there to be memorable movie moments I will never forget. So I say this to you Mr. Padhila GO GET EM BOY!!

There was a ROBOCOP 4? Was it Peter Weller?
EpicMan - 12/1/2011, 8:12 AM
So its like Terminator Salvation. Sam worthington (Half Man Half Machine)fighting for the humans against "drones gone wrong" or (self aware mad machines)...
GUNSMITH - 12/1/2011, 8:26 AM
ROBOCOP VS DRONES?..ROBOCOP PERIOD...JUST HIM. OTHER BIG BADDIE ROBOT? COOL..BUT DRONES? SELL ME ON IT WITH FOOTAGE AND A GOOD LEAD ACTOR AND WE'LL SEE.
MarVell - 12/1/2011, 8:27 AM
Besides being a great sci-fi movie, the original Robocop has a compelling story with great emotional content and awesome action that it delivers in 90 minutes.

Now day's reboots are all about flashy action and CGI and less about character development and a good story. Like the Conan the Barbarian reboot, another personal favorite that can't hold a candle to the original.

But, I'll hope for the best, I would have been a lot more optimistic if Darren Aronofsky had stayed attached.

Deus ex much?
marvel72 - 12/1/2011, 8:39 AM
robocop was a classic of 80s,robocop 2 was good but could of been better.

the less said about robocop 3 & robocop the tv series the better.

bring on the reboot it can't be any worse than robocop 3 & the tv show.
Shaman - 12/1/2011, 8:50 AM
Yeah... as cool as Robocop Vs Terminator could be... i'm not giddy over the idea of Robocop USING Terminator's concept. We'll see how it turns out.
redleaf - 12/1/2011, 8:54 AM
He should be equipped with pepper spray nipples
MarVell - 12/1/2011, 8:58 AM
@marvel72 - Robocop 2 was okay, but can you beleive that the screen play for Robocop-2 was written by Frank Miller, the guy who gave us such great comics as The Dark Knight Returns and Sin City. Robocop 2 should have been awesome. Then again Frank Miller wrote & directed that piece of crap the Spirit, so maybe that's not so unbeleivable.
redleaf - 12/1/2011, 9:07 AM

Now that I think about it, Iron Man vs War Monger ripped-off of Robocop
Ghostt - 12/1/2011, 9:18 AM
this is actually a good idea for a remake, and I am typically annoyed by remakes. The technology is we have now can do this character justice.

and the social commentary overtones of the movie is good stuff
marvel72 - 12/1/2011, 9:57 AM
@ Fitz3241

i know it should of been awesome, robocop 2 was also directed by irvine(the empire strikes back)kershner.
TyrannicalOverlord - 12/1/2011, 10:04 AM
*yawn*

Originality is dead.
SkunkApe1 - 12/1/2011, 10:05 AM
A while back, the plans for this were to just keep on going. Re-boot is totally unecessary.
sarahsatire - 12/1/2011, 10:14 AM
I hope they score Fassbender for the role.
GUNSMITH - 12/1/2011, 10:43 AM
GARAUNTEED ONCE ROBOCOP COME OUT MARVEL WILL MAKE DEATHLOCK
BFGLOOM - 12/1/2011, 11:32 AM
What the director means is that it will be set in a future where robocop needs to be built in order to save the humans from their man made drones which become "bad". It will be the big robot he fought with the guns for hands....Dead give away. Keep the same villains and it might be decent.
LRascal - 12/1/2011, 11:53 AM
Why do you all think RoboCop will be fighting the drones? RoboCop is the drone.
WannabeSpiderMan - 12/1/2011, 7:15 PM
@redleaf - Actually, that second robot, on the right, looks like a slightly smaller version of the Caine cyborg from Robocop 2. Or "Robocop 2" as they dubbed him in the movie itself. ;) I'm surprised they didn't go with a completely different/new design.
comicb00kguy - 12/2/2011, 6:46 AM
I do hope that the social commentary is as FUNNY as it was in the original. That was part of why the original film worked so well. It does sound like they're taking a different approach to the character with this drone thing.

If you have never seen the original, Netflix it or hit the $5 bins at Wal-Mart- I've seen an older release of the DVD there recently. It's a true classic, and you won't be disappointed. Stay away from the sequels though. Robocop 2 is without a doubt the worst piece of filth I have ever seen in my life. It had no redeeming value whatsoever. Every single character was mean, ugly, and utterly worthless. I left that theater needing a shower to wash that filth off of me.
KNIGHT3000 - 12/2/2011, 7:39 AM
"A Man Being Turned Into A Product By A Corporation"

How is that different from the 1st? Just start the movie already, everybody knows what ROBOCOP is about, just make your version better.
