Joss Whedon's award winning run on Astonishing X-Men -- from which the "cure" premise was lifted for the X-Men 3 movie -- is a must read, and the motion comic based on the series is probably a lot better than you would expect too. This two-disc collection will feature all four motion comics including, Astonishing X-Men: Gifted, Astonishing X-Men: Dangerous, Astonishing X-Men: Torn (out on DVD August 14, 2012), and Astonishing X-Men: Unstoppable (arriving on DVD November 13, 2012). The set will also feature brand new cover art by John Cassady.

Here is a breakdown of what to expect..

ASTONISHING X-MEN: GIFTED

Can the X-Men protect the world’s mutants against a powerful new alien menace and the “cure” that threatens to rid them of their unique abilities forever? This DVD features the first story arc of the ASTONISHING X-MEN 3-part series. Extensive bonus content includes: a conversation with Joe Quesada and Neal Adams, ASTONISHING X-MEN “Rise Up” music video, ASTONISHING X-MEN – GIFTED trailer, visual history of the characters, behind-the-scenes, Marvel Super Heroes™: What The — ?, artists gallery – John Cassaday, and additional trailers.

ASTONISHING X-MEN: DANGEROUS

In the second installment of the Astonishing X-Men arc, the tragic death of a student at the Xavier Institute reveals that a powerful enemy is working from inside the mansion to destroy the X-Men. It’s an enemy who knows all their weaknesses and can predict their every move. This new foe doesn’t want wealth, power or world domination – it only wants them dead. As the X-Men fight for their lives, they learn they’ve been deceived by one of their own. Even if they survive, the team will never be the same.

ASTONISHING X-MEN: TORN

This third installment of the Astonishing X-Men story arc brings more action and adventure as Emma Frost’s erratic behavior has the X-Men spinning in a nonstop downward spiral. Will an unlikely union be the final straw? After secretly lying in wait for months, the new Hellfire Club makes its move!

ASTONISHING X-MEN: UNSTOPPABLE

Strap yourselves in, folks! The final arc on Astonishing X-Men! After the shocking and brain-smashing events of recent issues, the X-Men are off to protect the Earth from its destruction at the hands of the Breakworld. And when it's all over, nothing will ever be the same! No, really, we mean it! Whedon and Cassaday prove they are more than Astonishing: They are unstoppable!

Full details on extras, artwork and tech specs for the Blu-ray haven't been revealed yet, but it should come in at around $34.99.

As far as I remember, the trailer of one of the motion comics didn't manage to impress me (never a big fan of 'em, either)...so I'm fine with the normal comics, as they have impressed me enough. Great story, and Cassaday's art was stunning.

yay astonishing xmen... boo motion comics. This was a gret series, and they should man up instead of doing it on the cheap. Just make a decent animated version, a la dc animation studios

hey '53---ya whedon's name is enough to sell this imo. xmen are hot, whedon is on fire, it should be a no-brainer that if your'e gonna do it, do it correct!

Not a fan of the ol motion comics either, but I found these ones pretty enjoyable. You sort of get used to the style after a while.

I've seen X-men first Class once. The Astonishing X-men Gifted and Dangerous films I've viewed dozens of times. My point. These are by far the best X-men films I've ever scene. By a landslide. People don't like the style but at least they get the characters and stories right.
I'm so f#cking stoke to get the next two.

Marvel Kngihts is equivilant to the DC animated team in terms of getting shit right. Want to see the Fantastic Four and X-men teaming up. Astonishing X-men dangerous. Want to see a truly kick ass version of Black Panther. Marvel Knights !!!! The first time I watched Spidewoman was takedn back by how the mouths didn't move but second time viewing it. come on these flims are far supperior to anything Marvel related prior to Marvel Studios and TASM.
Marvel Knights> live action Daredevil, X-men, Fanstatic Four ect ect

@talontd

I agree with you, full motion or none !

I don't like these motion comics and neither their voices.

the only one I've seen that I like was Iron Man Extremis, other than that, the rest are not that great.....

Seems like they chose to keep it as much like the comic as possible - the animation that is. But I would rather see full animation instead of moving eyes and mouths on still art. Maybe it looks better in the full feature...
Giznad - 7/11/2012, 1:15 PM
I love most of the Marvel Knights motion stuff. Black Panther didn't wow me much, but it was still cool. Spider-Woman and Iron Man: Extremis were really impressive.
kingmonkeyman - 7/11/2012, 4:10 PM
If you take it for what these are, cheap animation, they aren't that bad and well worth a watch. If they were high quality animation Marvel would just ruin them like they have their television based animation.
