COMICS: First Look At Marvel NOW!'s THOR: GOD OF THUNDER

Check out the cover to Jason Aaron and Esad Ribic's new Thor comic, which will debut as part of the Marvel NOW! relaunch. Aaron also reveals that we are in for a pretty unique take on the character, and we will see a brand new villain too -- Gorr, "the God Butcher"..

Jason Aaron tells Newsarama what we can expect from the new series, revealing that his take on Thor will involve three different "past, present, and future" versions of the character..

"I do flash back and show a young Thor in action, but he's actually just one of three Thors that I want to focus on. This first story is an epic tale that plays out over the course of thousands of years. So we spend time with young Thor in the Viking age — the young, hotheaded god of the Vikings, who loves to come down to Midgard and get into trouble. In the present, we see Thor the Avenger on a journey that takes him to the far corners of space, interacting with all sorts of new space gods and wondrous new locations. And then we also see old King Thor, who's the last king of Asgard, thousands of years in the future, where something has gone horribly, horribly wrong. Linking all these eras and Thors together is one villain, an all-new character [Gorr, the God Butcher], who is basically, at least initially, a serial killer of gods. He's a guy with a serious axe to grind against all immortal beings in the cosmos, and he's going around doing his best to kill them all off, one at a time, as brutally as possible. That villain's story unfolds over the course of all these different eras. He starts as a serial killer of gods, but by the end, he has become something even more frightening."

That sounds pretty damn great to me. Looking forward to this one in November. For the full interview click the link back to Newsarama below.

BruceLeroy - 8/7/2012, 6:49 AM
Holy shit, this sounds awesome. I'm liking the idea of showing Thor through the ages. I'm really looking forward to this.
JatevinM - 8/7/2012, 6:53 AM
That costume looks horrible
ComfortablyNumb - 8/7/2012, 7:00 AM
I actually kinda dig that costume.
niknik - 8/7/2012, 7:00 AM
Glad his arms are bare again.........an indestructable hero wearing armor is so friggin lame.........but WTF is with all the black in uniforms for Marvel Now? Thors mostly black. Iron Man is black and gold. what are they supposed to be "darker, grittier" versions now like DC's earth two douchebags, or the ultimates???
ComfortablyNumb - 8/7/2012, 7:01 AM
It's like Matt Fraction's Ages of Thunder on steroids.
aztecRaingod - 8/7/2012, 7:01 AM
Nice take on the costume
SageMode - 8/7/2012, 7:12 AM

Wonder if Loki will be an adult again?!
Jollem - 8/7/2012, 7:16 AM
i was surprised they went with the armored look for the movie. that version wasn't around for long at all before the movie.

Thor, the god of thunder, goes to a singles bar and ends up spending the night with a beautiful woman. The next morning, he decides to reveal his true identity: "I'm Thor!"

The woman replies: "You're Thor?! I'm tho thor I can hardly pith!"

:)
ckal - 8/7/2012, 7:18 AM
Maybe we will actually see Thor be a god again and embrace and use his various awesome powers.
JohnnyKrypton - 8/7/2012, 7:19 AM
The Asgardian's aren't technically immortal...
FireKnightRises - 8/7/2012, 7:22 AM
I love esad ribic'S THOR, I like it when thor went viking like this, the suit and the story looks good, it looks awesome
ckal - 8/7/2012, 7:27 AM
The story sounds awesome actually.

New villain Gorr, known as the butcher of gods, sounds like the old villain Desak, known as the slayer of gods. Haha.
ClarkFarley2012 - 8/7/2012, 7:29 AM
Looks of Ages of Thunder. Hoping this is good. Thor gets the short end of the stick to me as far as attention.
Mrsinister - 8/7/2012, 7:38 AM
Awseome!
JayOh - 8/7/2012, 7:38 AM
I like it! Looks badass! Maybe I can put Thor back on the pull list finally!
calin88 - 8/7/2012, 7:39 AM
Huge Thor fan here, that cover sucks!!!
YOUNGBL00D - 8/7/2012, 7:41 AM
[frick] YEAH! THOR!
JayOh - 8/7/2012, 7:44 AM
Odin looks badass too in the background!
TheGambitFreakIsBatmanOfCBM - 8/7/2012, 7:47 AM
Man, this has Uncanny X-Force style written all over it!Definitely a must for me.
Oh, and would you look at that, Illuminati propaganda on the cover...
TheIronPrice - 8/7/2012, 7:47 AM
Stay out of the rouge Thor!
JayOh - 8/7/2012, 7:56 AM
@TheGambitFreak yea I noticed the all seeing eye on Odins sword end and even the fact that he himself has an "all seeing eye" has illuminati propaganda written all over it.
ThaMessenger07 - 8/7/2012, 7:59 AM
That is awesome! New Favorite Thor costume!

The story sounds phenomenal and I love Thor not being involved in Earth shit. He's at his best when he can let loose.
marvel72 - 8/7/2012, 8:04 AM
he's got his cape there, the costume does look good i think i prefer the jms & olivier coipel look though.
HelaGood - 8/7/2012, 8:06 AM
i confirm ThaMessenger07's comment!

plus, im pretty sure Loki will be a child still... he's already pictured that way in some of the NOW promos.
ckal - 8/7/2012, 8:08 AM
Thamessanger-

Couldn't agree with you more about Thor on earth my man. Let's actually see Thoe cut lose! Being this guy back to his old days. Let him lift massive things, go berserker, unleash some god blasts and anti force blasts, and just in general be a physical and magical beast powerhouse, like he should be.
thunderforce - 8/7/2012, 8:21 AM
Sounds good they should introduce many more cosmic baddies here that they can use in any Avengers or any other movies they may want to make , maybe even a Galactus clone or someone similar .
ckal - 8/7/2012, 8:24 AM
Nomis-

It is not like DC's new 52.

Marvel is just shuffling the creative teams around and starting some titles back at #1 with the new creative teams. There is no rebooting any characters at all.
chujong - 8/7/2012, 8:24 AM
@ckal, I looked up Desak and yeah, I totally agree with you that both him and this new villain are identical. Well, agenda-wise they are.
ckal - 8/7/2012, 8:26 AM
Chujong-

Yeah. I guess we will have to see what the new guy looks like haha. A lot of Thoe comics from that time are great though, so I guess it won't hurt to take influence from them for the new arc.
ckal - 8/7/2012, 8:32 AM
I guess it starts looking like he only option when you retcon your universe multiple times, or so I hear. I've never read much DC, but if it was marvel that pulled that stunt, I would be extremely upset and disappointed. I've gotta imagine it may happen at some point though, in 20 years when the character histories get so long and become old that they get convoluted.
RorMachine - 8/7/2012, 8:32 AM
Marvel may not be resetting the clock on their characters, but this is still definitely s response to what DC did with the New 52, from a potential cash-cow perspective..and there's nothing wrong with that, business is business. I just hope we get some great new comics.
HellsHammer - 8/7/2012, 8:33 AM
Intruder
Personally don't care either way.
LOL - 8/7/2012, 8:36 AM
The costume looks like a variation of the "Ages of Thunder" Thor... curious on how this one comes out. Personally though, I like Oliver Coipel's version of the way the Thunder God was drawn.
GUNSMITH - 8/7/2012, 8:39 AM
I LIKE THAT GET UP HE HAS, IT LOOKS MODERNIZED YET THE KILT DEALIO MAKES HIM LOOK MORE "NORSE" AND HIM SHOWING THE GUNS MAKES HIM LOOK LIKE A BAD AZZ..I COULD SEE HEMSWORTH SPORTING THAT LOOK IN THOR 2, HE COULD PULL IT OFF. EVEN THOUGH I LIKED THE COSTUME IN AVENGERS, THIS ONE LOOKS MORE IN THE VIEN OF MYTHOLOGICAL YET MODERNIZED...IT'S COOL, THE ONLY THING I FELT AWKWARD WITH IN THE THOR FILMS WAS THOSE LEATHER BIKER PANTS..THEY GOT MOTORCYCLES IN ASGARD?.
newmutants - 8/7/2012, 8:40 AM
Ughhh shyt sucks.. just bring back simonson
SteveRogersSon - 8/7/2012, 8:41 AM
Na Nomis is just trying to start shit on this article...

Anyway I do like the old fashioned look of this cover...and the story sounds interesting to say the least.

Can't wait.
GUNSMITH - 8/7/2012, 8:45 AM
WHICH ONE IS BETTER?
YOUNGBL00D - 8/7/2012, 8:52 AM
I think he looked bigger in thor
Jordanstine - 8/7/2012, 8:54 AM
I actually liked the chain mail on the arms.

Now, Thor just looks like a WWE wrestler with a cheap gimmick...

All hail the Game!

ckal - 8/7/2012, 8:56 AM
Ror-

Not sure it's so much a direct response to DCNU. Marvel has over the years reset multiple titles to #1, sometimes at the same time. It usually accompanies a new creative team, but it seems like wih Marvel Now, they are taking the usual process, resetting numbering on a few more titles, and actually making it an advertisement campaign.

I guess you could say the decision marvel made to make it a big marketing campaign this time has been influenced by the DCNU though.
Seejay - 8/7/2012, 9:02 AM

Nice!
HavocPrime - 8/7/2012, 9:24 AM
sounds cool, I like Aaron's stuff, especially his Hulk stuff.
TheGambitFreakIsBatmanOfCBM - 8/7/2012, 9:29 AM
@GUNSMITH Those are cool, but sleeveless all the way!!!

Man, the sleeveless version is the perfect mix of Ultimate, 616 (Kirby Costume) It makes me all exuberant to see this costume, THOR: The Dark World! YEAH!

hope420 - 8/7/2012, 9:38 AM
Aye verily this shall be a fun read I say!
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 8/7/2012, 9:50 AM
Thor's suit sucks but the cover as a whole does not. It looks awesome.
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 8/7/2012, 9:51 AM
However the text that they used looks like it is a coloring book. Just my opinion.
