So yeah, Bond. It's not that I hate the movies, they just never really held my attention. As a kid I found them entertaining more often than not, but as I got older the shtick just wore thin. Bond shags a couple of chicks, spouts a few one liners, uses gadgets, beats the bad guys - ad infinitum. I know for most fans this is all part of the appeal, and the movies are fun, I was just never able to see them as proper, engrossing stories.

Until Casino Royale that is.

Daniel Craig's first outing as 007 was and remains my favorite Bond movie by a fair margin. It managed to pull off being an edge of the seat action flick, and also get under the skin of the characters at the same time, giving us protagonists we could actually care about beyond waiting to see how they managed to escape the next perilous predicament. I was so excited for what the future held for this new take on Bond - and then Quantum Of Solace came along and bored the pants off me again. So I was understandably cautious about Skyfall, even with one of my favorite directors at the helm.

But I am pleased to report that my concerns, for the most part, were uncalled for. Skyfall is ALMOST a return to the intense, character based action of Casino Royale, but Sam Mendes also throws a few old-school Bond-isms in there too. Now while this will no doubt delight longtime fans, I found myself rolling me eyes I'm afraid. Not at everything, I actually ended up enjoying some of the lighter moments - the ones that didn't feel forced anyway - and the movie can be quite funny at times.

I'm not going to get into the plot too much, but the movie begins with a terrific action set piece, that leads to probably my favorite Bond opening credits yet, accompanied by Adele's excellent theme song. Then it's pretty much business as usual (tuxes, cars, chicks..large reptile that Bond can use as a stepping stone) until Javier Bardem's villain makes his grand entrance, and then business really picks up.

I think it's fair to say that Silva is the best Bond Villain yet - he's definitely my favorite. Bardem plays it camp, and some may feel he overdoes it a bit but for me his character is a welcome jolt to a movie that was starting to get a bit tiresome. If I have any complaints it's that he is not in it enough, and without getting too spoilery, we are robbed of a proper showdown between he and Bond. And what about Bond? Daniel Craig is great, as always. Even in Quantum Of Solace he impressed me, and here - with much better material to work with - he's a joy to watch. Naomie Harris is decent, but doesn't get enough to do, and the gorgeous and talented Berenice Marlohe is completely wasted - the focus of a particularly misogynistic "Bond" moment that leaves a bad taste in the mouth. But the real "Bond girl" here is actually Dame Judi Dench's M, and her extended screentime and scenes with Craig are highlights of the movie. Ralph Fiennes is as welcome a sight as ever, although his character feels a little shoe-horned in, and don't get me started on Albert Finney's tough old codger that pops up at the end! Apparently he was standing in the shadows of an old house with a shotgun for 30 years waiting to spout rubbish one-liners.

If you are a big fan anyway, Skyfall may very well become your new favorite Bond movie. It's exciting, cool and compelling, with a sense of fun (camp?) that will surely please most viewers. It's just behind Casino Royale for me, but then I am a miserable Bond hating git after all!

It does look good but casino royale was amazing and will be hard to top that in my opinion.
FOOM - 10/26/2012, 2:47 PM
Just came back from seeing this. Great flick.
dollstix - 10/26/2012, 2:55 PM
If the script makes sense then yes it will be :)
RorMachine - 10/26/2012, 2:57 PM
No, it's not a patch on TDKR..but then that movie didn't have a character using giant Komodo Dragons as steps so I dunno..
RorMachine - 10/26/2012, 3:12 PM
Dammit, I forgot to mention the new Q..he's good:)
HelaGood - 10/26/2012, 3:16 PM

Nice to know this film stands on becoming a top bond film but to me pierce bronson is and always will be my favorite bond
but as far as movies of top 5 bonds go for me:
Dr no
Goldeneye
From Russia with love
Goldfinger
casino Royale

I thought Brosnan was a cheesy ham with extra slime. Couldn't stand him, or Moore. Connery was good, but the movies dragged on and on. Nope, Craig is my fave Bond my a mile.
marvel72 - 10/26/2012, 3:32 PM
favorite bond movies are goldeneye & the spy who loved me,haven't seen skyfall yet probably go tomorrow.
GSpawn - 10/26/2012, 3:34 PM
I'll admit after Goldeneye pierce seemed like a doofus with one liners to me but boy did he sell Bond in Goldeneye wore the role like a tailored suit smooth and cut, puffing cigars and seducing the ladies, only thing I didn't like was again he did it to much I like a cruel bond myself but Pierce was what I watched the most and enjoyed it, 2nd place though undeniably goes to craig then connery

Lots of comments love for You Only Live Twice, a film I find to be almost unwatchable (proud owner of ALL the Bond movies on DVD, btw). But, I digress. I'm pumped for this.
cwb77 - 10/26/2012, 4:29 PM
1. Thunderball / Never Say Never Again (basically the same movie, I know,)
2. Goldeneye
3. The Spy Who Loved Me
4. A View To A Kill (I know it's not great, but I found it very entertaining.)
5. The one with Sophie Marceau.
Also, I thought Casino Royale was dull & boring. Wasn't impressed. I know I'm in the major minority on that.

I'm obviously not the biggest Bond movie guy, but I've been seing them since I was in high school. So many I may not remember them all. A nod to Octopussy. :)

GOTG - 10/26/2012, 4:33 PM
My top 3 are SKYFALL, CASINO ROYALE and GOLDENEYE
TheRationalOne - 10/26/2012, 5:01 PM
Am I the only one who thinks Tomorrow Never Dies is the best of the Brosnan era Bond films?

Agreed that Craig and Connery are the best. Connery is still my favorite as far as the quintessential Bond ideal goes. Craig just has that ruggedness that I feel has always been lacking. He's a more believable bad ass. And ever since Defiance, he's been one of my favorite actors around. I can't wait to see Skyfall.
Hero020200 - 10/26/2012, 5:40 PM
I went to see this movie with a couple of friends and I we all came out agreeing that this was worst than Quantum of Solace... And that's saying something. Even family members who are huge Bond fans found this disappointing, yet every review I read says that this is the best Bond film yet! Do you think I should just see this movie again?
Sparrowsabre7 - 10/26/2012, 5:52 PM
@Ripynt: Nope, it's my favourite too =)

And Ror, what was the misogynistic moment? =S I don't know when I'll get to see it and I'm curious now.
supermarioworldE - 10/26/2012, 6:18 PM
Not really the biggest fan of Craig's bond (more of a Connery/Dalton guy) but I'm glad at least Skyfall will wash the taste of QOS out my mouth.
Yasn7 - 10/26/2012, 8:49 PM
I like Craig but Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace were not very good. I hope skyfall is good though and so far from the trailers it looks great.
Thanks for the review!
NorseGod - 10/26/2012, 9:57 PM
Quantum of Solace is my favorite! I don't get why people harsh on it so bad, it had plenty of action, Bond had real character development and it had the best Bond girl ever, Olga Kurylenko!
eleven59 - 10/26/2012, 9:59 PM
Poor dalton.. The guy was Craig's bond before it was cool.... And doing it in the 80's no less!they just didn't have the hardcore choreography back then
GrayMatter - 10/26/2012, 11:02 PM
@Ripynt & @Sparrowsabre7 - I'm pretty sure you guys must be the only ones. Tomorrow Never Dies was probably the worst Bond movie EVER, let alone of just the Brosnan ones.

IMO, Quantum of Solace was terrible as a stand-alone movie. I remember going to see it and thinking it was non-sensical trash. But I told some friends this, so we all watched Casino Royale and QoS back-to-back, and it works much better that way. It's like it's sort of a special extended edition of Casino Royale.
GIFfreyGinsberg - 10/27/2012, 2:02 AM
Wow! Just wow gents! Barbara Bach, by the way.
Sparrowsabre7 - 10/27/2012, 3:26 AM
@GrayMatter: Really? Worse than 'View to a Kill'?
EarOne - 10/27/2012, 4:20 AM
sooooo lookin forward to this.
Unionjack - 10/27/2012, 6:30 AM
Great review ROR.

I thought it was a great movie, wasn't a fan of using the DB5, especially as this is supposed to have been only his 3rd film in the series, the gadgets on the car didn't tie in for me.

It just felt a little to TDK influenced in the mid section and then went all home alone!!!

Great film, just not a patch on Casino Royale.

I still think Christian Bale would have made the best bond, if he hadn't been such a douche and turn it down with insults!!
thejon93rd - 10/27/2012, 8:06 AM
Dalton's License To Kill is among my favourite Bond films. Loved the way they handled it like a revenge story for 007, really well-executed and Dalton's a way better Bond than Roger Moore.
KillerOfSaints - 10/27/2012, 9:40 AM
Best line in any James Bond movie.....

"That's my little Octopussy"
KillerOfSaints - 10/27/2012, 9:54 AM
Best James Bond portrayal: Goldeneye by Pierce

Best bond babe: Xenia Onatopp by Famke Jansen or Solitaire by Jane Seymour

Best bond theme: Thunderball by Tom jones

Best villain: wow...uhhh Jaws? Scaramanga? Goldfinger? Trevalyan?

Best car: Aston Martin vanquish from Die Another Day

Best Q gadget: any of the watches that are remote controls

Feel free to agree people
Danbojohnj - 10/27/2012, 10:11 AM
Excellent film,up there with the best.

Better than some Connery flicks(not all,but some),all Moore,Lazenby and Dalton and probably the best since Goldeneye.

Great baddie too, best since the dude with the cat.

Without spoiling anything, the very last scene after the finale was when Craig truly became Bond and these new films became real BOND films.

Now it's on!
meatbag - 10/27/2012, 12:51 PM
I have not been impressed with Daniel Craig as Bond, even though I liked Casino Royale quite a bit (I fell asleep 30 minutes in to Qunatum of Solace and never went back to it). I saw the trailer for this, though, and it looks pretty awesome, so I'm willing to give it a shot.
Top 5 Bond Films:
Dr. No (Jack Lord as Felix Leiter, cool cat)
Live and Let Die (better than the book, I thought)
For Your Eyes Only (total cold war goodness)
The Living Daylights (highly underrated)
Goldeneye (brought Bond into the 'modern' world)
