The news (though not actually confirmed by Disney or Abrams yet we should point out) seems to have gone down well enough with fans, but there are those that think it's a bad idea to have one man in charge of both Trek AND Wars. Despite both being huge sci-fi franchises and having "Star" in their titles, Star Trek and Star Wars have actually always been quite different. Trek was much more serious and grounded, and dealt with some weighty issues, while Wars always had a more fun, Sunday matinee adventure feel to it. The thing is when Abrams rebooted Star Trek a few years back, you could say he brought more of a Star Wars tone to his take on the exploits of the US Enterprise and her crew - so what can we expect when he steps into a galaxy far far away? A more serious Star Wars? I loved his Star Trek myself, and am looking forward to the sequel, but I admit to being a bit apprehensive that Trek and Wars might become a bit too close tonally now that one man is overseeing both. Anyway, that's just my take, what's yours?

I'm confused. A part of me is all "Great this is fantastic!" another side is all "Thats such an uninspired, unoriginal and boring choice. Thats too much power for one man. I got a bad feeling about this".

I think it's awesome! On the downside, lightsabers will cause lens flare. To be serious, I'm hoping that Abrams doesn't use the 'no sound in space' like he did in Star Trek. That would ruin all the ship battles.

He turned me from hating the cheesy original Star Trek shows into loving the new Star Trek timeline that he created. I HATED Trek before I saw that film. I think those who hated Star Wars before will see this and change their minds as I did with Trek. And for us die-hard Wars fans, it'll be amazing to come back to the SW Universe once again. Hopefully, this'll finally bring peace between the SW fans and the Trekkies...

(By the way, I love Fanboys... Fanboys 2 for Episode VII?...)

Oh look at me I'm all ironic and negative...Grif you really are one trolling tosser, who actually has a fan base on here, jesus you people need to get out of your bedrooms and stop finding this kid funny for shitting on everything, why would anyone have a reason for not wanting Abrams to do this, he's a proven success at everything he has done, you may not like it all but jesus you think you can name some indie director who did some art-form piece of shit would do a better job cause it make you sound all deco and crap, emo amercian pricks.

seriously???? i mean, seriously??? is he the only director who wants the gig? im pretty sure he's not the first choice and a lot of people probably passed on it due to the pressure but this is the guy who has done a great job with star trek, does he need to stamp his vision on star wars too? it doesnt feel good having the same guy in charge of let's face it, sci-fi.

Well it is not hoax because ABC News announced it and their parent company is Disney! Anyways I am excited Lucas was just pig headed and in my opinion he was ruining the franchise. I am sure Abrams can do great with this, hey why complain we are getting another SW movie!!!!

I really enjoyed Star Trek and Into Darkness looks great, so it seems like the movie is in capable hands. However, as others have said I don't want it to be too similar tonally. I'm really curious to here what Abrams has to say about this.

Although I understand why Disney chose him I beleive he should have stayed with star trek.Let's hope he does something very different visually with SW

Chloë Moretz in a Star Wars movie sounds brilliant, as for now, which partly makes me wish Matthew Vaughn was the man to get the job...damn it. And I was rooting for lesser known names, as well. And Abrams? He'll do great, though. I'm feeling a bit mixed, but I have faith in Abrams.

I think some of his work stinks and some of it is great, so it could go either way.

BUT I also said that about Joss Whedon, and look at how well that turned out. There are things about it that i would change but those are relatively minor.

So I will watch as things unfold with a keen interest.

I hope Abrams feels the pressure to do what it takes to make this movie look and feel like episodes 4-6. Like genuine Star Wars.
I hope he cares about the vast legacy of the originals just like we all do... and understands that it was a legacy that was very nearly lost forever through Lucas' arrogance and stupidity.

I don't know if he's aware of any of that. But if he is, then it could help make this a success.

I'm rather amazed at this news. Never have I expected Abrams to direct Star Wars 7. Even though he's done something similar with Trek, he's an amazing director, and a big SW fan to boot. I'd say this film is in capable hands.

No new Star Wars movie will ever outdo the original trilogy. The original three are iconic. I enjoyed the prequels because they were fun to watch and they regenerated interest in the Star Wars franchise. However, the prequels could have had a better storyline (some of the story was good/other parts were crap). Regardless of who directs the new Star Wars movies, I have a strong belief they will be better than the prequels. New director, new ideas, etc. BL: we're getting a new Star Wars movie/trilogy or however many they decide to produce, so, I'm excited, regardless who directs the movie.

heisei24@ That's really awesome.
.... fvck it I'm in. As long as they go with Vaughns casting of Chloe Moretz as the lead and bring back the original cast.

JJ's a great choice...I'd like to see one of you haters try and juggle two trilogies at the same time. Until you do, just go with it..
