SCIFI MEDIA ZONE: Entering the project, what sort of apprehensions or expectations did you have and how did the actual experience compare?

JOE JOHNSTON: I had been so conditioned to expect it to be less than pleasant that I was happily surprised on a daily basis. I thrive on chaos…I secretly enjoy it when everything is falling apart and success or failure is hanging by its fingernails, but thanks to my great crew and AD team, there just wasn’t that much chaos. CAPTAIN AMERICA ran about as smoothly as a picture this big can run. We had a lot of laughs and a hell of a lot of fun in the process and based on first reactions from the post-production team, the fun translates onto the screen.

SCIFI MEDIA ZONE: Along those same lines, what did you think of Captain America when you started and had your opinion been affected at all in the aftermath of shooting the film?

JOE JOHNSTON: I went into this wanting to make a great version of a comic book film…MY version of a comic book film. I’ve turned down other superhero movies because I never related to the superpower thing but I love the idea of Steve Rogers/Captain America from the beginning. Here’s a guy who is basically Everyman…actually less than everyman. He’s a 98-pound weakling who becomes the perfect human specimen in the space of a few minutes. Think of the world’s greatest Olympian…the fastest runner, the strongest weightlifter, an unbeatable fighter…and add another 50%. Every feat of strength or speed that Steve Rogers performs is awesome, but totally believable. I think that grounding the visual effects in the laws of physics (and I’m very fond of the laws of physics) helps to engage the audience in the character’s journey.

SCIFI MEDIA ZONE: The real question fans want answered is when we're going to see a trailer for the film.

JOE JOHNSTON: All I can say is we're working on it now and it's great, but we're not putting it out there until the vfx shots are perfect.

marvel72 - 1/8/2011, 7:15 AM
good at least they've gave a valid reason why the delay, but it still needs to hurry the f*ck up.
JackSass - 1/8/2011, 7:18 AM
It takes a lot more than the space of a few minutes or even Cap's power to become an unbeatable fighter.

You need training for that and lots of it.
Dusk - 1/8/2011, 7:33 AM

AlexDeLarge87 - 1/8/2011, 8:07 AM
Great news!!:)
EdGross - 1/8/2011, 8:29 AM
Remember, when the Hulk movies were made, the look of the Hulk kept changing with each subsequent trailer.
SpideyQuad - 1/8/2011, 8:32 AM
@RacerREX

I agree and this very thing has bothered me too about Thor.

In the comics Thor has been de-powered but never completely powerless. I always took it to be like 50%.

Still formidable at human terms. A human powered Thor would be gay in my eyes.
superotherside - 1/8/2011, 8:36 AM
glad they r waiting till they get the VFX perfect noooo more GL unfinished stuff 4 me! but please hurry we're dying!

LEEE777 - 1/8/2011, 9:13 AM
WEAVING should never of showed his face JOHNSTON what are you thinking and Cosmic Cube wtf?

We needed the superhero movie of Private Ryan for Captain America!

Still, to ED awesome article man, big thumbs up! :)

CaptainAmerica - 1/8/2011, 9:20 AM
what are you on about Leee!!??
Hawksblueyes - 1/8/2011, 9:22 AM
Great work again Ed. This fits nicely into what I wrote up last night.

Anybody who has not had a chance to take a look at my Captain America Editorial, please do so and let me know what you think.
((( EDITORIAL: One Thing I Would Like to See in Captain America:the First Avenger )))
chuckg313 - 1/8/2011, 10:01 AM
I agree with @ AllpurposeNaji, I hate when they strip the character of all of there abilities They then become boring and i would have never read a book about a regular man with a hammer in the first place.
LEEE777 - 1/8/2011, 10:02 AM
CaptainAmerica @ What are you on about lol, it sounds like INDY & THE CRYSTAL SKULL... we need realism in this epic WWII movie, real WWII stuff, heck can do all that cosmic stuff later in Avengers etc! : P

Saying that.... I'm hoping for Epic, really am!
WingPow - 1/8/2011, 10:20 AM
@chuckg313
I have to disagree. I think it's an oppurtunity to identify with the character. By showing some "humility", you humanize a very what is already a godly character.

@Lee777
They already said they were going for an Indiana Jones feel. Outside of the movie sucking, the idea isn't much different than Raiders of the Lost Ark or the Last Crusade etc. It's all out there.

Also, how do you real can it be? They can't ground it too much in reality or Cap' will never translate over to the Avengers movie. Could you imagine Private Ryan (after the movie) standing next to Iron Man and Thor? It wouldn't work.
Choppaholic26 - 1/8/2011, 10:21 AM
Nice article. At least it's being delayed for good reasons. Cant wait!!
the1egend1ives - 1/8/2011, 10:33 AM
@LEEE777

What part of a guy with a red skull and a brightly colored American soldier with only a shield is realistic to you?! I used to want this to be like Saving Private Ryan also, but I'm much more pleased with the route they're currently going. Indiana Jones did it and the first three movies were believable. In short, this Captain America needs to be a superhero movie, NOT a war movie. Also, surely you know that in the comics the Cosmic Cube belongs to NOBODY but the Red Skull!
CaptainAmerica - 1/8/2011, 11:16 AM
Lol Leee, now i see what you mean, i doubt theyll let that distract us too much from the war part of this film.
the1egend1ives - 1/8/2011, 11:16 AM
One thing that I'm LOVING about this film so far is what great chemistry the cast and director seem to have. In all of the interviews they're so chill and joke around with one another. Apparently they spend a lot of time together outside the set, so that sounds like they like each other a lot. I think Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell look GREAT together! I can't wait to see them shine on-screen!
Ironbat95 - 1/8/2011, 11:25 AM
@Leee umm just wondering why would you want a Captain America movie where the Red Skull isn't involved with the [frick]ing Cosmic Cube?????
LEEE777 - 1/8/2011, 11:36 AM
CAP @ Thats what we need... MORE WAR part!

Guys @ Okay I'll take that back, I men't more real as Nolan has done with BATMAN! ; D

Still, CAP's gonna be sweet!
PoPcornDude - 1/8/2011, 11:44 AM
my guess is that the trailer will be shown with either with The Green Hornet or any other kinda 'big' movie in january or february the latest....
I can't wait, that's for sure !
Fonzieismypal - 1/8/2011, 12:29 PM
"MY version of a comic book film"
Ugh. I hate directors. I get that he's gotta put his spin on it, but I think there's something to be said for putting the source material and (more importantly) the fans before one's ego.
CaptainAmerica - 1/8/2011, 12:44 PM
YES!!!!! And i agree, it should be atleast 80% war. Your worried it'll only be 20% war like Wolverine.
Wadey09 - 1/8/2011, 2:58 PM
here's my issue:
although i'm glad that Marvel and Johnston are doing their best to get the trailer and the movie perfect. and i'm glad that they are being a LOT more forthcoming about Cap than the Incredible Hulk.
and here is where my problem comes in. if they wait too long, then no one will be prepared to go see this film. granted, all of us geeks/nerds/dorks/peoplewithoutsociallivesoutsideofFacebook (JK) will not have time to spare to go see Cap. and if he and Thor don't do well, then this might put a damper on a few of Marvel's upcoming projects based on lesser known characters. but i am very certain that most audiences will not know what hits them with Thor.

and if they are waiting based on the trailer, then Johnston had better make dang sure that it blows Thor and GL out of the water!
JoshWilding - 1/8/2011, 4:03 PM
Superb work as per usual ED. Glad to hear they're taking their time with the trailer despite the fact I'm desperate to see it!
herofreak15 - 1/8/2011, 5:08 PM
@telavizion they did make a suit but i think that they changed it because of poor fan reactions or they thought it looked bad and unrealistic... i think cgi was better that the suit but it does look bad in the trailer here's the link of the original suit Ryan wore

kakinurmawth - 1/8/2011, 5:39 PM
@ED: great stuff! You keep posting great work!

I'm glad they are not gonna just throw crap to the fans just to shut them up, and really ty to deliver a worthy trailer.

As for the cgi comments above, remember when Peter Jackson was putting out trailers for King Kong?? Kong went through so many looks before the final version was presented with the release. I'm hoping that is what GL will be.
Dickel - 1/8/2011, 5:59 PM
Looking forward to this myself.
I liked how in latest hulk movie that human dude gets injected and can run hell fast. Can we expect Cap to be doing something similar? Should be cool.
SciFiNut - 1/8/2011, 9:56 PM
Words cannot express how excited I am for this movie. THIS is the comic book movie I've been waiting for my entire life. I cannot believe we are fortunate to get such a well crafted WWII Cap movie. It still blows my mind.
Coldblood6 - 1/8/2011, 9:58 PM
Yep just what I thought; they have learned from the mistakes with GL and are preparing a good trailer with finished VFX.

Just out of curiosity can anyone relate what non comic book fans have thought of the GL trailer?

Saw Tron tonight. The Thor trailer was shown and got a very good response. The whole cinema was buzzing after it was shown.
EdGross - 1/8/2011, 10:06 PM
Thanks for the comments, guys. Much appreciated.
Jakeroo - 1/8/2011, 10:22 PM
Nolan's bat-movies are good, but I think they were too
Realistic. I'd love for his 3rd film to feature a more colorful and outlandish bad guy just to see if he can handle that. When they go to far in one direction it takes the fun out of doing a comicbook adaptation. They
are slaves to explain everything Bruce can do.

Cap should be a superhero origin that just happens to be set during the war. If there is too much modern hydra stuff and not enough Nazi, then whats the point?
