After teasing the reveal of the man under the Superman mask in a preview, DC Comics finally unveiled his identity in today's The New 52: Futures End #17. While the experts below are collated from several different sources, (Bleeding Cool, Newsarama and r/comicbooks) it turns out that Billy Batson, aka Shazam, has been acting as the Man of Steel, as many fans speculated. After a lengthy fight with Rampage, Billy finally gets a chance to let loose the iconic word and reverts back to his (slightly) younger self. This puts an end to rumblings of Kal-El now being disfigured or becoming half-cyborg (as seen in the initial Superman: Futures End one-shot cover, now changed to feature Masked Superman), as the original Superman comes crashing down back to Earth (sporting a look not dissimilar to Henry Cavill in Zack Snyder's Man of Steel). You'll obviously need to read the issue to get the whole story, but this is about as much information as we've gotten so far. So what do you think? Did you guess this months ago, or were you hoping it would be somebody else?

MrBlackjack - 8/27/2014, 4:54 PM
I haven't been paying attention to this stuff, so...

Is all this stuff in cannon? I don't think it is, but is it?
MrBlackjack - 8/27/2014, 4:55 PM
*the main cannon for DC
Jollem - 8/27/2014, 4:57 PM
it's kinda funny because shazam was initially created as a kind of copy of superman. there was legal stuff. in the end, shazam ends up at dc. good times

@MrBlackjack
I only read the first few issues but I believe this is a possible future of the current DC Universe. I don't think this will be canon in five years, though.
DrunkenNukem - 8/27/2014, 4:59 PM
Looks a lot to Cavill
Fastestmanalive - 8/27/2014, 4:59 PM

I don't know what's going on, but that last image of Kal-El is pretty epic.

@TheAmericanPatriot,

Probably just in time for Marvel's Forever Evil event to start.
TheDpool - 8/27/2014, 5:40 PM

Ramiel - 8/27/2014, 5:46 PM

CaptShipwreck - 8/27/2014, 5:48 PM
To make the character more aware to the non comic reading movie goer, the media will mention it .. Boom free advertising for them
staypuffed - 8/27/2014, 5:49 PM
@earzmundo
Some people think Hush is behind everything in Eternal but I'm not convinced yet.
TankD - 8/27/2014, 5:53 PM

RexDartEskimoSpy - 8/27/2014, 6:02 PM
@MrBlackJack:

There's no such thing as DC canon anymore. They have about as much continuity as Looney Tunes these days.
BlacktinAmerica - 8/27/2014, 8:05 PM
@TheAmericanPatriot Did someone say Space Jesus?

BATMANx - 8/27/2014, 8:24 PM
I Had a Feeling it was Billy
ManCalledSting - 8/28/2014, 11:40 AM
Oh look, wash, rinse, repeater trolls, trolling again, on a DC thread. Man if you kids spent this much time working on bettering yourselves, or just stuck the you Marvel threads, this place would be much better. Though you troll DC as much in Marvel threads, as you do in DC threads.
ManCalledSting - 8/28/2014, 11:42 AM
I'll have check this out on wiki, to figure out why Billy is dressing up as Superman. I assume Supes disappeared, and Billy is using his likeness to pay tribute/inspire people.

This looks like a good read.
