By Crom, They're Casting Conan!!!

Casting breakdowns for sword-and-sorcery epic!
It looks like Lionsgate's new Conan starts shooting February 2010 in Bulgaria. Marcus Nispel ("The Texas Chainsaw Massacre," "Pathfinder") will be directing. Empire has the casting breakdowns, which help understand the characters, and some indication of the plot.

*beware spoilers*

Conan: 20s-30s, Caucasian, the last of the Cimmerians, out for vengeance on Khalar Singh, a formidable warlord and warrior in his 40s or 50s, for whom the producers are "open to all ethnicities".

Singh is looking for Queen Ilira, whose blood will help him raise a demon army. Ilira's handmaiden is Tamara, who allies with Conan in what sounds like a Red Sonja hot amazon role. And there's Ukafa, Singh's untrustworthy henchman for whom a massive African or African American is required.

There are also supporting roles for Conan's dad Corin, who teaches his son the Riddle of Steel; Fariq, Khalar Singh's son and heir, strangely described as a "proto goth-rocker"

Remo the evil wizard; Fassir, a monk protecting Ilira.

Lucius, a mercenary scarred by Conan dumping him into a fiery pit

An unnamed one-eyed thief Conan rescues from Lucius.

Artus, Conan's pirate buddy; and Cheren, Khalar Singh's mystical blind archer.

Now interstingly is the worry for Khalar Singh and the reason he wants to raise a demon army in the first place, could it be arch-wizard Thoth-Amon, he only appears in one original Robert E. Howard Conan story, but is mentioned in a couple of others.

Thoth-Amon was played by Pat Roach in Conan the Destroyer (Love that movie ).

I think this has potential but unsure of the director. I hope Conan finally gets the on screen treatment he deserves.

LEEE777 - 10/27/2009, 6:01 AM
BARBARIAN QUEEN, ive got that movie of a DVD somewhere lol!
LEEE777 - 10/27/2009, 6:02 AM
Pretty sure that Oded Fehr will be in it somewhere and hopefully Keith David as well! I just hope they're not gonna go with Gerard Butler as Conan. Cause he should be Kraven!!!
Shaman - 10/27/2009, 6:17 AM
Cheers LEEE yeah they should of made alot more in the 80's since that sort of thing was big then.:P

Shaman@ Agreed no Butler....he should be Kraven.....or Hercules in the Champions movie..(sniff hope) lol

teabag - 10/27/2009, 6:21 AM
yes. jb would make a good kraven.
grif - 10/27/2009, 6:34 AM
FINALLY GETS THE TREATMENT HE DESERVES???? Arnolds Conan was tha shit! what are you talking about. I am tired of hearing backseat directors here always talking about "oh I hope they finnally get this right, or oh I hope they do this movie the way it shoudl be", F U and go to directors school then if you are so smart.
blee947 - 10/27/2009, 7:16 AM
blee947@ Actualy i am an amature director and i always expect an outstanding performance from my missis and the midgets! :D
teabag - 10/27/2009, 7:20 AM
@ teabag hahah nice
blee947 - 10/27/2009, 7:30 AM
the trick with the midgets is you have to pay them in chocalate. for some reason they luv that shit.

good article tea. unfortunately i dont meet the criteria for any of these characters.
superdog - 10/27/2009, 7:43 AM
Find outdated, popular property. Insert formula characters for property, including but not limited to: wise cracking sidekick, evil man with imposing body guard, old, wise man/father figure. Get hot, well-endowed actresses. Insert. Get muscular, popular leading man. Insert. Get micro-waved script minus any real effort. Produce. Make millions off popularity of outdated property at minimal effort. Repeat.
imnotwearinghockeypants - 10/27/2009, 7:48 AM
Pretty much Hockeypants..might still be entertaining though!

blee947 just got added to the list. I've compiled a list of people who talk complete and unadulterated horse shit on here..I'll prob do an article on it someday.
RorMachine - 10/27/2009, 8:05 AM
please put lee77 at the top. it will make him proud :)
superdog - 10/27/2009, 8:06 AM
imnot-----Conan is Conan wether it be in a comic, a novel, or a movie, take it for what it is.I have read just about all of the old novels and the story in every one is pretty much the same as you stated.None the less I enjoyed each and every one of them allong with the comics and the movies. That being said, I am very much looking forward to this movie.
Hawksblueyes - 10/27/2009, 8:09 AM
"What is best in life?? To crush you enemies, to see them drivrn before you, and to hear the lamendation of the women."

I hope they have a Zula character like the old Conan cartoon.
Nemesys - 10/27/2009, 8:19 AM
Conan is cool. I would love to see a reboot of the movie. I think HULK is strongest there is. Puny Conan is no match for the might of the HULK. HULK SMASH!!!!
THULK - 10/27/2009, 8:20 AM
Don't get me wrong, I loved the Conan movies, but they didn't feel completely like the Conan books. A lot of the stories about him had a much darker and supernatural feel to them, vaguely Lovecraft-like in some of his stories. It would be nice to have that added in. The first movie hit pretty good though.

Speaking of Conan movies though, anybody hear when the Red Nails cartoon is supposed to be coming out? Or did it already and I missed it?

Also, going to directors school doesn't always mean you should be a director. I could name off plenty of movies that suck so hard they could double as high paid prostitutes.
JerusalemJr - 10/27/2009, 8:26 AM
@ Rorschach01
you sir, are a gay.
blee947 - 10/27/2009, 8:36 AM
@Jersusalem, agreed. They could do such a great, epic, supernatural take on Conan, like the old Savage Sword of Conan comics (especially the ones illustrated by Buscema, amazing), but I just have a feeling we'll be seeing Scorpion King with Conan. Hope not.
imnotwearinghockeypants - 10/27/2009, 8:39 AM
I thought the second Conan movei sucked because of the eccesive wazardry (is that a word) and magic, it was corny.
blee947 - 10/27/2009, 8:51 AM
After arnold i dont know if it would work if Conan wasent a bodybuilder,If they just took a big guy it might not work.
thunderforce - 10/27/2009, 9:02 AM
Grif is excited about something? Thank Mitra! This is great news indeed!
Betty - 10/27/2009, 9:02 AM
Tea--I love Cho.
Betty - 10/27/2009, 9:03 AM
I was just going to say that,
about it ending up like Scorpion King!
Oh, well, at least get the star of
Scorpion King, Dwayne Johnson, to
play the big barbarian! He's the
only one I can think of who is
built right to play Conan!

Just give him a big bushy long-haired
hair weave and off he goes to see
heads roll! If they do the story like
the John Buscema drawn comics it will
be epic! I'd like to see it with more
realism like Braveheart! No one says you
can't have fantasy done in a realistic way!
No campiness please!
DDD - 10/27/2009, 9:03 AM
IF THEY GET SOMEONE WITH AN AUSTRIAN ACCENT IM GONNA BE SO MAD...GET SOMEONE THAT LOOKS LIKE THE COMIC BOOK, GRUFF, MASSIVE, WITH THAT MENACE-JUST OOZES BARBARIAN
GUNSMITH - 10/27/2009, 9:04 AM

MultiPurposePoni - 10/27/2009, 9:07 AM
The barbarian era was ruled by might and magic, it was meant to be corny. I'm not sure they'll be able to put butts in the seats in our day and age though. I mean, surely the fans of the original films will attend but who else? This film has the same chance of succeeding as Ang Lee's Hulk. Nostalgia will be the only factor that could sell, as long as they keep budget costs to a minimum.
Shaman - 10/27/2009, 9:09 AM
Their going to be hard-pressed to find someone
with the perfect build like Arnie who can
actually act!
DDD - 10/27/2009, 9:09 AM
Also i hope they keep the music the same that was one part of the movies i really liked.
thunderforce - 10/27/2009, 9:10 AM
BLEE @ Hate to break it to you, but CONAN is in the world of fantasy!!

BETTY @ DOG @ Lmao!!

Yeah @ SHAMAN, i don't want BUTLER either for CONAN, well he's not big enough for one thing and he cant be everything lol. Yeah dunno about a Bodybuilder too or a WWE star. Their okay for lesser roles but not for a main part like CONAN?

Who is as big or near as ARNOLD who can really act???

An dont say CENA or DURAND peeps lol.

LMFAO @ Multi!!!! : D

LEEE777 - 10/27/2009, 9:10 AM
Like I said the only one I can think of who
can really act and has the build for it is
The Rock!
DDD - 10/27/2009, 9:13 AM
"20s-30s, Caucasian"

Apparently, they're only looking at white actors.
kenny38606 - 10/27/2009, 9:17 AM
Well, Im just so insulted now Blee, you brute!

They don't need to be as big as Arnie. Big..but not that big. I vote Jensen Ackles.
RorMachine - 10/27/2009, 9:17 AM
Cho does rock. I have a few of his art books and I do believe he can draw the perfect women.
JerusalemJr - 10/27/2009, 9:20 AM
Of course there's always this guy! :D
He's done a couple of B movies and was
a bad guy on Knight Rider with an actual
speaking part! He also starred as Superman
in the World's Finest Fan trailer with
Batman on youtube.

DDD - 10/27/2009, 9:22 AM
You don't need to get a huge actor to play him.You just need a good tall actor who can bulk up.He doesn't have to be huge, he just has to look huge compared to all the other characters.I can guarantee you there is no actor out there already possessing Conan's body type, that will be able to carry a movie. The guy above certainly can't.

Get a 6'2-6'3 guy, bulk him up like Hugh Jackman and you've got your Conan.
kenny38606 - 10/27/2009, 9:29 AM
So I never realized just how much Conan's haircut looks like a Betty Page......
JerusalemJr - 10/27/2009, 9:30 AM
ROR @ LMao!!!

DDD @ Cant that guy really act?? As long as its NOT the ROCK, its too near SCORPION KING for joe public.
LEEE777 - 10/27/2009, 9:32 AM
I wonder how Vin Diesel would look with long black hair. He already played space Conan in Chronicles.
JerusalemJr - 10/27/2009, 9:33 AM
@DDD
That's Mike O'Hearne and after seeing worlds finest, thought he would have made a great Superman on film (after acting classes). He's on American Gladiator now.

Conan would translate well on film if they stick to the original material, or follow what Cary Nord has been producing lately. It's fantastic, and if you haven't read any of it, go get the first two or three graphic novels. Well, they're more compilations, but get them anyway. You wont be able to put them down, and the are is incredible.
gtrman - 10/27/2009, 9:35 AM
Gtrman@, that's who that is! Mike O'hearn!
I thought the same thing about him playing Superman!
He didn't seem that bad in World's Finest
and I think he can actually act or they wouldn't
have given him a speaking part on Knight Rider!

In Knight Rider he had black hair and played an
extreme fighter who was illegally killing
people in the cage for the main bad guy!
It's obvious to me he's been taking acting lessons.
DDD - 10/27/2009, 9:43 AM
Vin Diesel! Are you kidding me JerusalemJr.@?

Somehow I don't remember Conan with a thick
New Jersey accent! Geez! Vin Diesel for every
big beefy guy roll! Give me a break!
DDD - 10/27/2009, 9:47 AM
There are plenty of talented actors who could be up to the task. They are not all right for the role, just examples.

Karl Urban, 6'1/6'2 - Seems like foreign actors are more suited for these types of movies than Americans.Probably older than they're looking for.

Gerard Butler, 6'2 - Too old .300 character too similar.

Victor Webster, 6'3 - Too obscure/lower B-level, but I like him.Probably older than they're looking for.

Chris Hemsworth, 6'1-6'2 - He's already Thor, but if he's the thunder god, stands to reason he could fit the barbarian.

Dwayne Johnson, 6'3-6'4 - His name has been bandied around for the last few years. He's already 37, so depending on when they start, he may be too old for them.Scorpion King role too similar.

John Cena, 6'1 - Probably not.From what I've seen, he's a really weak actor.

Tom Welling, 6'2-6'3 - Looks the part, but he's already Clark Kent.
kenny38606 - 10/27/2009, 9:47 AM
tom welling, are you kidding me...........

how bought Brock Lenser.
blee947 - 10/27/2009, 9:54 AM
Lesner***
blee947 - 10/27/2009, 9:55 AM
Not a Vin Diesel fan eh DDD?

I do like the Karl Urban idea, though I think he would need to gain a bit more muscle.
JerusalemJr - 10/27/2009, 9:56 AM
IF IT WAS THE ROCK, HE'D COME ACROSS MORE QUICKER LIKE A JAGUAR,HE LOOKS SHARPER THAN A BARBARIAN,IF YOUVE SEEN SCORPION KING, HE PLAYS THE MUSCLEBOUND ASSASIN MUCH MORE BETTER....BUT ME I SEE CONNAN AS A BRUTAL FIGHTER, MUSCLE FOR DAYS,CAN HANDLE A MASSIVE HEAVY SWORD LIKE A SAMURAI WARRIOR, A BONE BREAKER, HEAD LOPPER,HEAD BUTTS LIKE A RAM,DOESNT THINK METHODICALLY, BUT MORE WITH BRUTE WILL AND FORCE,IF HE LOSES HIS WEAPON HE'LL CHEW THROUGH YOU WITH HIS TEETH IF HE HAS TO TO PUT YOU DOWN..BRUTAL,SAVAGE,NEAR UNBEATABLE,POWERFUL.....THATS THE CONAN I WANNA SEE
GUNSMITH - 10/27/2009, 10:01 AM
lol see I told you guys the other day, that Grif is not always negative
DarthMulder - 10/27/2009, 10:03 AM
I'd say that out of the whole bunch mentionned, Karl Urban would be the best choice but he should hit the GYM ASAP!!!
Shaman - 10/27/2009, 10:10 AM
Yep Gunsmith@, I see Conan as more big and brutal too!
I mean in one comic book he lost his sword in battle
so when the horse-riding warrior tried to cut him down
he simply lunged at the front of the horse and knocked
it over onto the warrior, crushing him to death! Now
that's the Conan I know!

Mike O'hearn is 6'4" and a bodybuilder and quite huge!
I actually think he could play Conan! It would be
better if they used a relative unknown anyway! Of course
there is also David Batista, 6'5" brute that he is!
He was good in his acting roll on Smallville as a
Zone demon who was eating people alive!

DDD - 10/27/2009, 10:16 AM
Shaman@, Karl Urban is just too small to play Conan,
in my mind! He is not built that large! He is more
like a panther than a bearish Barbarian!
DDD - 10/27/2009, 10:20 AM
Betty@ Big love lol :P

I vote DDD to play Conan :)
teabag - 10/27/2009, 10:24 AM
Conan needs to be a giant hulkish man
like Lou Ferrigno!

Here's Mike O'hearn clowning around
with lou Ferrigno on American Gladiators!

DDD - 10/27/2009, 10:27 AM
Thanks Tea@ but I'm too old and tired
to take on a part like that and I do
believe ya gotta know how to act!
Dat ain't me! lol
DDD - 10/27/2009, 10:31 AM
I'm not against O'hearn, i just never saw him act. And i'm willing to sacrifice a bit of muscle to get better acting talent. Urban is a huge guy, he just needs to hit the gym hard. Either or, i'll only be happy if we get a good movie with box office worthy acting. If O'Hearn auditions and kicks ass, i'm not against him at all. But you can't name me one wrestler i'd agree with. Batista does not have the look needed for Conan. None of them do.
Shaman - 10/27/2009, 10:31 AM
Whats the name of the guy who played Colossus ?? :P
teabag - 10/27/2009, 10:34 AM
Oh and before some tardnutt comes in here saying they've been to MTV.com and that James Preston Rogers is the best to play Conan, HE'S A SHIT CHOICE!!! Just let him and Tyler Maine play faceless [frick]s and fade to oblivion.
Shaman - 10/27/2009, 10:35 AM
James Preston Rogers cannot act!
He's just a barbarian screamer!
Monster Fodder! lol
DDD - 10/27/2009, 10:37 AM
lol @ tardnutt. comical
DarthMulder - 10/27/2009, 10:37 AM
Daniel Cudmore played Colossus. And that's
a good suggestion Tea@!
DDD - 10/27/2009, 10:38 AM
I actually like the rock for conan, I think he could do stoic.
thwhtGuardian - 10/27/2009, 10:40 AM
Thanks DDD :P

Il go with Cudmore...

:)
teabag - 10/27/2009, 10:42 AM
Yep, Cudmore's a decent choice! I might even sketch him but... not sure i'll have the time :P

Rogers could be Conan's bitch...

The Rock "could" maybe pull it off. But they'd have to switch cimmeria for samoa LOL :P
Shaman - 10/27/2009, 10:42 AM
Then of course there's Paul Telfer!
He's a fine British actor who played
Hercules a few years back on U.S. TV.
He's 6'2" and built like a brick Kraphouse!

DDD - 10/27/2009, 10:51 AM
Hmmmmm... Yet another great choice. Well, at least they aren't stuck with scraping the bottom of the barrel. WWE that is.
Shaman - 10/27/2009, 10:57 AM
why not use mike fassbender after hopping him up on steroids??
paul telfer = good ass choice also...maybe a pumped up charlie hunnam
Anil Rickly - 10/27/2009, 10:57 AM
DDD@ also an excellent choice :P.....you just know there gonna cast Joke Gyllinghaomygodyoursistersugly for Conan :)
teabag - 10/27/2009, 10:57 AM
Cudmore needs to shoot his ass full of roids and pump iron 4 hours a day, 7 days a week for about a year before he can fill Arnolds boots.........and everybody will expect whomever takes that role to fill Arnolds boots. Anything less is just not believable.
niknik - 10/27/2009, 10:57 AM
Right you are niknik@!
DDD - 10/27/2009, 10:59 AM
Wow, my vote goes with that Paul Telfer guy. That top image might as well be called Conan. But is he a good actor?
JerusalemJr - 10/27/2009, 11:01 AM
Them are some tough boots to fill!
If I had to fill 'em I'd fill my shorts! LMAO
DDD - 10/27/2009, 11:02 AM
He's an excellent actor Jerusalem@!

That Hercules mini-series was well received
and was a traditional classic version of
Hercules which takes a Shakespear-type actor
to play!
DDD - 10/27/2009, 11:07 AM
meh, he was ok jeruslem, I remember seeing that Hercules movie, it was one of those scifi channel originals so it's hard to tell if his acting was wooden or just the movie itself.
thwhtGuardian - 10/27/2009, 11:08 AM
Their hasn't been a Conan movie in damn near 25 years!

And still, Arnold is the gold standard. Talk about staying power! That's why I like the idea of a relative unknown. The Telfer guy DDD suggested has the perfect look IMO. If he can act his way out of a wet paper bag, I'd say give him a shot. The last thing I want to see is a Gerard Butler or The Rock doing "their take" on Conan. I wanna be able to forget the actor and see the character. Not happenin with a made name.
BillyBlack - 10/27/2009, 11:16 AM
I agree with Billy Black but he ALSO needs to be a good actor. Well, at least decent enough to not look wooden on the big screen. Telfer seems like a good choice, i say audition his ass!!!
Shaman - 10/27/2009, 11:20 AM
thwhtGuardian@ that 3-hour mini-series was not on Sci-fi!
It was on NBC in 2005 and was nominated for an Emmy award
but it didn't win. It was the classic telling of Hercules
from his childhood on up! Telfer played the grown
Hercules and was also nominated for an Emmy!
I do believe he might be a good actor!

He was also on NCIS as a roided out super-soldier who was
killing other buff soldiers with his bare hands!
He was really scary good!

DDD - 10/27/2009, 11:21 AM
DDD I could see that man. Good pick.
DarthMulder - 10/27/2009, 11:31 AM
Yeah @ DDD kudos, me too!!!

Kinda like yours too @ TEA!!

Some good choices!
LEEE777 - 10/27/2009, 11:37 AM
At least we have some good choices!
I don't know what Hollyweerd is gonna do!
IDIOTS!!!
DDD - 10/27/2009, 11:39 AM
Gee Tea@, you don't like how macho "The Jake" looks
now all buffed up for Prince of Persia?
Awww he's a regular tough guy now! LOL

DDD - 10/27/2009, 11:43 AM
Wasn't Conan, Arnolds first roll? Only Pumping Iron was before Conan and that was a documentary. They are going to go for the look first, Conan does not require a fantastic actor. As a matter of fact its a fairly descent movie to break in another body builder/
wrestler/athlete type of actor. Look what it did for arnold.
Hawksblueyes - 10/27/2009, 11:50 AM
this is from TV Guide:
Apparently hoping to bulge its fourth-place ratings with bulging muscles during the May sweeps, NBC is offering the three-hour TV movie Hercules from Hallmark Entertainment tonight (Monday). (The drama was originally envisioned as a four-hour miniseries and is due to be presented in that format later in the year on the USA Network and, of course, eventually on DVD.) Critics are wrestling it to the ground. Melanie McFarland in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer uses the adjectives "boring, overwrought, pandering" to describe it and suggests that it "is easily outmatched by the worst episodes of [the syndicated series] Hercules: The Legendary Journeys." Matthew Gilbert in the Boston Globe dismisses it as "a sometimes campy pseudo-epic filled with British accents and would-be Shakespearean overacting." To Robert Bianco in USA Today, it all amounts to "three straight hours of horrid plotting, indifferent direction, hideous costumes, shoddy effects, dull sets, dreary dialogue and terrible performances." Likewise, Vince Horiuchi in the Salt Lake Tribune concludes: "The NBC movie 'event' is so full of unintentional laughs, cheap production values and, worst of all, amateurish special effects, you would think this is a high school production cast with grownups."

And it was nominated for its sound effects...and still lost...

which is not to say the guy couldn't pull it off like someone mentioned the governater wasn't exactly an award winning actor. Conan isn't Shakespeare.
thwhtGuardian - 10/27/2009, 11:51 AM
why are there so many pictures of shirtless men on here? this site has gone downhill.
superdog - 10/27/2009, 11:52 AM
DDD- Jake could glue as many ass hairs to his chest as he wants, his sister still looks ugly as fart!

Hawksblueyes- That was way back in the day when we were prehistoric enough to not need good acting skills for fantasy films. Nowadays, it'll never happen.
Shaman - 10/27/2009, 11:53 AM
that telfer guy might work.
grif - 10/27/2009, 11:55 AM
just a point of interest arnold's first movie was Hercules in new york...and his English was so terrible the dubbed over his voice and they almost did it again in conan the destroyer.
thwhtGuardian - 10/27/2009, 11:56 AM
Everyone calls for a good actor to play Conan. That is too funny! Remember who did it first? Mr. Universe. LOL "NO WRESTLERS!" Lol Arnold had less lines than the supporting cast combined in Barbarian! I'm not worried for oscar class acting. Just the right look. Arnold had it. Half human, half steroid induced neanderthal would do nicely.
Phinehas - 10/27/2009, 12:00 PM
SirPrize to the rescue. Ya'll get out from under those rainbows.

SirPrize - 10/27/2009, 12:11 PM
Well, his lack of acting abilities was one of the main problems with the movies. He is supposed to be a clever and savvy warrior, not a brute who rarely speaks.
kenny38606 - 10/27/2009, 12:12 PM
I'm breaking up this PRIDE Parade.

SirPrize - 10/27/2009, 12:14 PM
Phinehas- We have evolved since then. A movie like Conan the Destroyer would bomb big time in our day and age. Without decent acting, a great sript and kick ass effects, Conan would never break even.
Shaman - 10/27/2009, 12:15 PM
SirPrize-
Guardian of hetrosexuality, and blighter of souls.
Phinehas - 10/27/2009, 12:16 PM
Shaman--most fantasy films I would agree with you but Conan is different. Arnold never did aquire good acting skills and yet with absolutly no skill he nailed Conan. Conan is a big badass man, who even when doing something out of character AI kind, gentle, considerate, doesn't change his demeanor in doing so. He is gruff, dominant, and harsh always. I believe this is THE movie that not only would a wrestler type be perfect for, but a Small tallented actor would not. Most of the wrestlers who could be considered, much like Arnold in his time would not need to stretch themselves very far.
Hawksblueyes - 10/27/2009, 12:16 PM
I like the quiet brooding asspect (for SirPrize) that was portrayed. Maybe you're right, Shaman. But I don't think Ryan Reynolds could handle what this role requires.
Phinehas - 10/27/2009, 12:19 PM
Hey what about Nathan JOnes.
Spock - 10/27/2009, 12:21 PM
thank u sirprize
superdog - 10/27/2009, 12:22 PM
I hesitate to say it, but maybe this is up John Cena's alley, figuritively speaking. LOL
He has had some experience now, albeit flops, but how else could he be sharpened up to be the Einstein that Conan was? He has to be look pissed and swing a broad sword. I think he could do it. This is where a strength of a Director will overide the weakness of an actor.
Phinehas - 10/27/2009, 12:22 PM
Hawksblueyes- If that is the case, then why the hell did the Conan series starring Ralph Moeller flop??? Cause he was a shitty actor in a fantasy setting. Arnold became famous at an era that wasn't so demanding of their movies. Muscle and "Splosions" were the rage back then, no one needed to say much to rock the box office. If what you say is true, then Pathfinder would have known the same success as 300!!! Which is clearly not the case.

Phinehas- Cena looks menacing when he's angry as much as Marky Mark does. That's not convincing to say the least. Nathan Jones however can make me shit my pants from abroad, now that's what we need!!! BUT, i'm not sure he has the "look" or facial attributes required for Conan.
Shaman - 10/27/2009, 12:24 PM
That was my problem with the originals though, Conan isn't stupid. He isn't a super brainy character but he does actually think through a few things pretty well in the longer Conan stories. I mean, he does take over a kingdom later in his life and helps it to grow pretty powerful.

I don't mind not having a supremo actor to play the part but I would like someone who can at least change facial expressions believably.
JerusalemJr - 10/27/2009, 12:25 PM
Conan was a Warrior who was smart enough to become a King!
He's not just a big mindless brute! You can't have a crap
actor playing him!

Arnie actually acted in Conan the Barbarian pretty well
but it did stretch credulity!

Not all the critics cut Hercules on NBC down!
Here's what Seattle Times TV critic Kay McFadden said
about it:

"And that's why tonight at 8, I'll be watching the NBC movie "Hercules." It's a delightfully dark and sexy Grade B costume drama that tries to stick to the original legend, but can't help having fun.

Besides, the cast is great, and they fling themselves wholeheartedly into their roles. Former James Bond Timothy Dalton is Hercules' father, Amphitryon. (More on that technicality in a moment.) Elizabeth Perkins is mother Alcmene. Terrific young actress Leelee Sobieski plays Hercules' second wife, Deianeira.

Best of all, it's got Sean Astin as Hercules' wise friend and instructor, Linus. "Lord of the Rings," "Goonies" forever! A movie with Sean Astin is like a night passed with a clever, wry and slightly debauched buddy from college.

Still, "Hercules" falls apart if the hero doesn't do his job. That task falls to newcomer Paul Telfer, and I think he presents just the right mix of hot-headed impetuousness and naive sincerity.

Let's face it: Hercules was not the sharpest spear in the ranks of Greek mythology. He lost his temper, drank and did lots of regrettable things. An actor portraying Hercules has to offer a fair amount of charm to compensate, and Telfer does. Move over, Kevin Sorbo."

Telfer was chosen out of 200 other actors up for the roll!

Nice feminine pulcritude SirPrize! Thank You! :D :D :D

Paul Telfer looks and sounds like Conan to me!
He's a completely believable actor!

DDD - 10/27/2009, 12:35 PM
@DDD

I agree, it will be difficult for anyone to convince me otherwise now. Now we just need him to try for the part and someone intelligent be the casting director.
JerusalemJr - 10/27/2009, 12:42 PM
Shaman---So your saying that we have reached an age where a Jason Statham or a Vin Diesel movie like Crank or XXX is beneath our tastes. Your probably correct.
We had best be carefull, we may progress to a point where absolutly nothing could please us ever.

You've got a helluvan eye for the, Ahem, finer things. ;)

And always a hot ass Sooner girl. You're an Okee thru and thru, my man.

Kudos once again.
BillyBlack - 10/27/2009, 12:57 PM
Hawksblueyes- It is a shame, yes. But it is the truth. And quite frankly, if they're going to use a bad muscle bound actor, a shitty script and lame effects, i'd rather they not touch it at all and leave the originals as the classics they are concidered to be. Because bombing the Conan franchise to smitherines should be the last thing on fans' minds right now. However, if they find the needle in the haystack, an actor that is very decent with a fair amount of muscle mass, and that they have the right screenwriter/director/effects coordinator, then i'm all up for it! If they can do it for Thor, they should be able to pull it off for Conan. He is rather "simpler". Pitty Hemsworth is Thor, he could have been a good Conan. All we need is another guy like him and maybe Tefler has what it takes.

Robert E Howard's Conan stories "outdated property"???

NOOB!!!

And what about the whiner who thinks the Schwarznegger Conan flicks should not be remade, and takes a poke at all of us "armchair directors" for daring to post our opinions?

Perhaps CBM needs an entrance exam...or a Supermike radar...
bropous - 10/27/2009, 2:04 PM
A Conan movie that is faithful to the original stories and is more like the recent PS3/X-Box 360 game "Conan" has tons of potential. Bloody, intense action, plenty of, shall we say, "mature" elements, epic tone, fantasy setting, etc.

Right now, my top choices are as follows for Coco:

(Not in particular order)

1. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson

2. Karl Urban

3. Paul Telfer

Vin Diesel?! I cringe whenever I hear his name...

teabag going 6 to midnight on you? ^_^

Thanks for the pics of cannery row! I've been on the lam a bit. Stealing internet and making Gorilla style cartoons to pass the time. Recently survived a bout with swine flu, so I'm ready to re-enter the world after being locked in a quarantine for about a week.

Speaking of unbearable illness... Has anyone seen supermike around?

icebergslick - 10/27/2009, 5:10 PM
I don't like Arnie as Conan very much. The movies were okay, although I have to admit my opnion changed over the years. I watched the movies as a kid and thought they were incredibly cool, then read Howard's original stories as an adult, rewatched the movies lately and was quite dissapointed. Hopefully the get it right this time! This Telfer guy looks like he might be a good Conan. And if he can actually ACT, well, he gets my vote.

@JerusalemJr: I was really looking forward to the animated Red Nails movie, it seemed to stay close to the original story, had decent animation and a great voice cast. Bad news are that for all I know you haven't missed it: last time I checked the movie's site it looked pretty dead, as seems the whole project. Nothing happened with it for a long time now, no idea what went wrong, but something most certainly did. It'd be a real shame if we never get to see it...
Kyos - 10/27/2009, 5:16 PM
Thanks Betty

It sucked. Solitary confinement is maddening. Especially when the side effects of the meds they put you on cause hallucinations and dementia. But with a high fever who the hell can tell the difference? ^_^

Whatever doesn't kill you, right? It'll take more than a lil H1N1 to down this rock n roll clown!
BillyBlack - 10/27/2009, 5:59 PM
DDD's pick of Telfer is the best choice I've heard of on here. Nice find. What's with the idea of running to WWE's hack-pool every time a role calls for a heavily built individual? That's just lazy. The Cena's, HHH's and The Rock's are mediocre to just downright shit actors.
They can't resist hamming it up. The proof of that is in their work if anyone feels like throwing away $5 on a rental.

To re-capture the essence of what made "Conan the Barbarian" a cult hit they would have to lay heavy emphasis on the musical score. It would have to be epic and basically be able to tow the picture from scene to scene. Just like Basil Poledouris' musical score had done. Arguably the most definitive aspect of the old films.
If they go more source material on it (which is the hope), we'd have to bypass the Arnold look-a-likes and run on a compromise of physical prowess and acting ability and not sacrifice one for the other. I think one thing may be certain though, that his womanizing will definitely be side-stepped. Let's just hope that they actually go a step forward with Conan rather than get lazy or just stupid and end up taking a back seat to a film made - about 25 years ago? - on a budget of $20m.
WeaponX - 10/27/2009, 6:23 PM
awesome
clarkkent007 - 10/27/2009, 6:25 PM
Telfer could be alright, like I said it's hard to judge him as he was in the greek myth equivalent of smallville. It was poorly written and ill conceived, the marvel hero Hercules had a closer rendition of the mythology than the movie did. It's pretty hard to screw up greek mythology, it's classic in its very nature and to totally mess up the trials of Hercules is just plain lazy. Not wasn't Telfer's fault though, no more than Tom Welling is to blame for smalleville's short comings. Bad writing certainly constricts an actor.
He's got a great look for conan, he looks a little young but the movie was filmed a few years back.
thwhtGuardian - 10/27/2009, 8:57 PM

....now they will know why they fear the dark...james earl jones

pss arnie could still pull off a king conan
Thali - 10/27/2009, 11:56 PM
Besides the fact I don't think it needs to be "rebooted". Can't see how they're gonna find anyone nearly as good as Arnie.
iNsaneMilesy - 10/28/2009, 1:54 AM
KING CONAN! Any actor, regardless of how good a job he pulls off will never be excepted as well as arnie. and HHH, what the [frick] thali? have you seen a conan movie let alone read the book he a cimmerian not a steroidian!

@wards: Yes I have the films. liked the first...More importantly Yes I have all the Howard collections...

HHH would prolly be better cast as Kern,. from the new hyborian age books...

i guess a wig or hair dye wouldn't be enuff,... they'd have to circumcise his nose..
Thali - 10/28/2009, 11:54 PM
Ray Stevenson of HBO's ROME should be CONAN..He is 6'5" tall, agate blue eyes of the Cimmerian, and already in great shape..With 6-8 weeks weight training he would be ABSOLUTELY PERFECT!!! He already has sword/weapon training from the ROME series and has the size that Howard would probably rise from the dead to see. Finally a CONAN who was nearer to the 7' black maned, sullen eyed, reaver, thief, warrior, who REH wrote about with such fervor and love. Please dont let the misguided wannabe directors, writers, and producers invite some 6'0 tall muscled blockhead ruin this one too...Arnold brought the idea of a CONAN to life but let STEVENSON, or worst case, Roland Kickinger, Paul Telfer or Karl Urban put on the loincloth and sandals of the Cimmerian and do him JUSTICE... I have read every publicized novel available to bookstores and Amazon in the Northwest on the Barbarian over the past 20 years and only those mentioned could do him justice. Also, CONAN favored a broadsword, but used over a score of different types of weapons over his lifetime on a regular basis,.,,including a joint of beef... DO the right thing...Not just the Hollywood thing and "@#$% it up!"
