I saw Dragonball Evolution on Saturday, and I didn't like it. I love dragonball, dragonball z; GT was "ok", but I digress. I give this movie 6 out of 10 at best.
First of all, the opening scene was ok, until all the sudden, Grandpa Gohan goes to kick Goku, whoa, can you say "Cheesy"? Wow that part sucked. You will see what I mean, if you go and see it. They didn't put brown contacts in Justin’s eyes, which I know seems like a small thing, but if they make another movie and he goes Super Sayian the transformation won't be as cool without the eye color change (brown to emerald green).
Next, The kamehameha wave at the end was cool and it's what I would have expected it to look like (the only truly cool part of the movie).
There wasn't nearly enough focus on Goku's training. And the scene where he trained to use his KI was where they really broke away from the character of Goku. He tries to cheat! NO WAY! Goku would never cheat.
And the fight scene with Piccolo as a whole was not just too short, but very anticlimactic. It was too easy to defeat him.
Shenlong doesn't say anything? Really? That was an easy opportunity to score points with fans. That is shitty, but he looked ok.
This movie was clearly geared towards children, which I know what some will say, “Dragonball, is for kids, I know, but I guess I just wanted something a little more serious, more epic. This should have been 2 ½ hours long with most of the focus on Goku’s training and fight scenes with Piccolo. Maybe he could have lost a first fight badly towards the beginning and then came back strong at the end. Something more like that I guess.
I really would love to see, a serious more epic effects driven sequel, called Dragonball Z. With huge power up sequences, but judging from how many people were in the theatre with me on Saturday night (about 15 people total and it opened Friday!!!!) I don’t think it will make nearly enough money to justify a sequel, too bad; maybe they could have fixed the problems with a sequel.
Then again this movie was clearly low budget; they shot most of it in Mexico!!! Maybe it won’t take much to earn their money back, who knows. I know one thing; this movie should never have been made with anything less than 100 million dollars. Once again too bad, I wanted to like it.
