Unused Designs For H.E.R.B.I.E. & Fantasticar Surface In Latest FANTASTIC FOUR Concept Art

By now, we know that at some point, Josh Trank's Fantastic Four was set to incorporate robot sidekick H.E.R.B.I.E. & the Fantasticar, but unfortunately neither made the final cut. Now, conceptual artist Fausto De Martini has shared his original designs for the two. Check it out!

To say 20th Century Fox's Fantastic Four had a bad summer is a bit of an understatement as the Josh Trank-directed reboot managed to only gross a little over $146.8 million worldwide on an estimated $120 million budget. If the film manages to perform well in Japan & Italy, there's still a very slim chance the film manages to cross $200 million worldwide later this year.

A few weeks ago, we learned that at some point in the production process, Trank wanted to include the Fantastic Four's robot sidekick H.E.R.B.I.E. and their flying car, the Fantasticar. Unfortunately (or fortunately?), neither made the final cut after Fox's president of production Emma Watts nixed the idea, possibly due to the similarities between H.E.R.B.I.E. and Star Wars: The Force Awakens' BB-8. Regardless of them not being used in the film's theatrical release, conceptual artist Fausto De Martini has now released his original designs for both H.E.R.B.I.E. and the Fantasticar on his own personal Facebook page.

THE FANTASTIC FOUR, a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel's original and longest-running superhero team, centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy.

Guess they were taking the "car" part of Fantasticar literally. Why would you make the foundation of a flying vehicle an actual car body.

I have no opinion on these. The movie was full of so much half-assery that nothing about it's production interests me, except in the basic tabloid drama which is entertaining in it's own way.

I see a mix of Johhny 5 and Wall E in the first picture of Herbie. The first Fantasticar looks like some prototype Batman would have made for the Batwing. Another crazy thought is this robot on a ball would have come out before Star Wars.

I tried to watch Jobs but I was INCREDIBLY drunk and the film couldn't hold my interest. Kelso was the first thing to pop in my mind when I saw the van picture. Maybe Jordan should have yelled "BURN!!" instead of "Flame on".

Wow. These look pretty cool.
Definitely "basement" prototypes - and it gives them room for a makeover for a sequel.
