Josh Trank Officially Set For FANTASTIC FOUR Reboot; David Slade Exits DAREDEVIL Reboot

Recent reports suggest that plans for Fox's Fantastic Four reboot have been set in motion with Chronicle director Josh Trank officially on board; while Daredevil has lost its director!

Although Twentieth Century Fox has no big announcements for this week's San Diego Comic-Con, the ever-reliable Deadline has obtained various updates surrounding the studios' Marvel property slate. The site has revealed finalized plans for the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot, in addition to a setback for the Daredevil film.

Deadline suggests that, despite having many projects in the works, Chronicle director Josh Trank is in final negotiations to helm the Fantastic Four reboot next. Also, the film will be the next Marvel project on Fox's radar to move into production following The Wolverine & X-Men: First Class sequels. A release date has been locked.

In regards to the Daredevil remake, the site further reports that David Slade has dropped the project, while Fox has been on the hunt for a new director since. With a completed screenplay they're happy, they're hoping to kick off production for the remake before the The Man Without Fear's rights revert back to Marvel Studios. The reason for Slade's departure is timing; mainly having to direct the pilot of a Hannibal series.

Josh Trank was also on Sony's radar to helm their Spidey spin-off, Venom, however, he'll direct F4 first.

glad trank is on board i loved chronicle. and i'm not too upset that david slade is off of DD. not that i don't like his work, but i think they could do better.

YESS!!!! Marvel may bring Bullseye, Daredevil, etc back soon. From the Deadline article

Fox is looking for a director on its other major Marvel reboot, after David Slade just dropped out of Daredevil. The studio has a script it likes, but has to get the film into production by fall or risk losing the property back to Marvel Studios and Disney. Slade could not make the timing work as he is directing the pilot of the series Hannibal.

Cool, though I kinda hope he purposely holds FF back so rights can return and he can direct it then. DD doesn't have much time left, so...we're probably getting that back, but hopefully they get THIS man to direct it.

DD is better off at Fox (assuming the movie they make is half-decent). If it reverts back, we won't get ANY daredevil movie for a decade or two.

Damn. This is the worst Marvel related news I've heard this year.

Well, there goes my dream of Reed Richards ever shaking Tony Stark's hand on screen before they argue about The Ultimate Nullifer and what it all means.

Guess all we can do now is keep our collective fingers crossed that it works out.

Fox will never give up their rights. Accept that fact and move on.

Fox is the most stubborn of stubborn bastards. At one point I heard that they'd make straight to dvd releases before giving up the rights to Fantastic Four or X-Men.

The Fantastic Four is the one property I've been hoping would revert to Marvel/Disney! Not only are so many characters and plot devices tied into the team, but those same plot devices are what could make or break some of the future MCU projects. IF in fact the Marvel Cinematic Universe is heading in the cosmic realm, they'll unquestionably need/require the use of some of Marvel's biggest cosmic characters, including Galactus, the Silver Surfer and other cosmic entities essential to the Marvel universe, galactic/cosmic or otherwise. They need to act NOW to acquire the FF so that all the other properties associated with them can be assimilated into the MCU. If going cosmic is the goal, this needs to happen.

I'm in the minority when it comes to Daredevil, at least the director's cut.

Also, I know no one wants to hear this, but it is for the best that these characters remain outside of Marvel's/Disney's ownership. Not because Fox or Sony or Lionsgate are going to make them better - but because Marvel can only produce so many movies per year.

DD reverting back to Marvel/Disney could be cool. I'd love to see the direction theyd take it in.

Does anybody know when the rights to FF revert? Is it in the Fall along with DD? I think FF reverting is more important to the MCU than DD because of the direction it seems to be goin in. Then again, Feige did say they MAY look at Civil War, then you'd just need as many characters as possible, which would prolly call for the xmen to revert as well since alot of them were in it

Are we possibly looking at 6 Marvel movies in 2014? Between Marvel Studios, Disney, Fox and Sony, we have Cap 2, Guardians of the Galaxy, Big Hero 6, X-Men First Class 2 and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 scheduled for 2014.

If FF starts filming right after First Class 2, which starts in January, it's probably going to be released in 2014, as well.

That's a lot of stuff. And sadly, no DC movie in sight that year.

@SuspenseSmith, it's kind of an interesting thing. It's been said many times, but if Marvel got all it's franchises (X-Men, Spider-Man, Daredevil, FF and Ghost Rider), they wouldn't be able to really use them for some time.

Kevin Feige has said that at the moment, Marvel Studios can only commit to 2 films a year. Maybe only 1 in the year a big movie like Avengers comes out. So that's about 5 franchises at a time that they can handle.

Marvel Studios currently has Iron Man, Thor, Cap, Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy. They're also looking to make Ant Man, Black Panther, Dr. Strange and a host of other films. Iron Man 3 may be the last in the series, but that still leaves 4 other ongoing franchises, as well as the 3+ films they want to do. These other properties would another 5. That's a good 12 franchises they'd be handling. That's crazy.

Another thing that sucks is that if they were to get any or all of them back, they would have to do yet another origin story. It's not like DC, who doesn't have an established shared universe and you can reboot Batman without doing an origin and say he's been active for a year or more. Marvel Studios has a shared universe they've been establishing for 4 years now, so you can't just do an X-Men or FF film and say they've been around because we know they haven't. They haven't been in this world before now.

Not only do you have to do another origin to establish them into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you have to do a new one that fits into the world they've been creating since Iron Man.

It would be interesting to see how they would fit the X-Men into the MCU, because most of that world's superpowers are either derived from tech/super-science or the magic-science from Asgard. How would they work in people who are born with abilities?

Dammit, I wanted FF back with Marvel but I'm really not surprised. After the success with The Avengers, FOX will "try" their best to make FF the next Avengers....keyword "try". I hope it's a success.

I don't really care about F4. I want my Silver Surfer film!!!

I loved First Class so I'd welcome a good F4 or Daredevil. DD needs to be violent and gritty though, or actually intertwine DD with F4 and have Matt be their attorney and maybe have Kingpin work with Doom. I'm not sure why Fox hasn't merged their characters already.

It seems FOX can only get X-Men movies right(even with that, FOX started [frick]ing up after the 2nd one but X-Men:FC was really good). They [frick]ed up DD AND Elektra. FOX had 3 shots at the FF(the first one was made with the sole purpose of keeping the rights!!) IDK...I wish the rights for DD & FF reverted back to Marvel. Lets see how they do with a non X-Men movie now....

Venom doesn't need a spin-off. You can't have venom without Spidey. It doesn't make sense. Maybe venom crossover maybe thats it.

tazmaniak, that's not entirely true.

The main reason Marvel doesn't want to commit to more films per year is not necessarily financial (after Avenger's box office performance, Disney would have no problem throwing more money at Marvel Studios), but rather that they don't want to over-saturate the superhero movie market.

Fox and Sony are currently releasing about a film a year each, with Marvel Studios releasing about two a year. That's four Marvel films a year, with two of those being non-Marvel Studio films.

So what happens if Sony and Fox lose their rights to Marvel properties? There's no reason to think that Marvel Studios wouldn't be releasing four films a year to fill the gap in the market. So we'd be losing exactly 0 Marvel movies a year...

So, in closing... **** you Fox. I hope your Fantastic Four reboot falls through in the end.

Let 20th Century Fox keep them for now. A Josh Trank-directed reboot would be interesting. Hope they set it in the Space Race era. It'll be different, especially after First Class' success— and if Disney were doing the reboot, it would be set in the present. So let Fox give it a shot. If they fail so bad that the rights revert, even better.

Fox hold rights the two most important franchises to the marvel universe.

Fantastic Four and X-men.

Reed Richards- The smartest marvel character who is deeply entwined with all of the marvel elites (like Pym, Starks and the avengers)

Galactus- The most powerful character in their universe and almost all of the cosmic stories involve him directly or indirectly. Even half of their cosmic character are created by him.

Silver Surfer- Same reason as above.

Dr.Doom- Doom is their most dominate character in their universe who buts heads with almost every hero. Doom and the nation of Latveria(which is also easily one of the most important area/locations in the MU) is one of Iron-man, Cap, Shield, even the all mighty Thor and the entire Avengers constant, important and personal enemies.

The Fantastic Four as team and their classic stories- Their stories alone set up half of the marvel universe. The micro-verse, Inhuman, Skrulls, Kree and Gladiator all have their origin closely tied to FF comics.

David Slade was officially our secret weapon. He held on as long as he could and he gravitated us toward the reunion of one Marvel charter to the Marvel production movie team. Well done Sir. Well done. Pssst. FF is next... ;)

Part II.

X-men.

Mutants- Easily the single largest part of the MU. Mutants appear in just about every single marvel series. Most even have their own original mutants in their own series.

Charles Xavier & the Xavier Institute- Charles is easily one of the MU influential character. One of the MU most powerful telepath. His institute one leading structure that train most of the MU control their powers for heroes mutant and non-mutant alike.

Magneto- The master of magnetism is easily one of MU most nefarious & important villains next to Dr. Doom. Magneto holds the marvel kill count of the person who have killed/murdered the most people(on earth) in the MU. He is a national threat who head to head against the Avengers many times.

Savage Lands- Easily one of the most important locations.

Shi'ar empire- Is also one of the three large intergalactic impires (Kree, Skrull and Shi'ar) in the MU. The Starjammers is also a group directly tied to the Shi'ar.

Wolrine- He and his lore goes deep into and with many backgrounds character of MU.

Every Mutant group- Brotherhood of Mutants,Hellfire Club,island nation of Genosha, Asteroid M,the Morlocks,Apocalypse and his Horseman,Alpha Flight,X-Factor and many variation of X-teams. Inhumans also like FF have very close ties to X-men.

Marvel's Cosmic/Intergalactic Cinematic Universe doesn't much room to stand up without Fox's Franchises.

They have Thor, Thanos and the Guardians. I hope the MCU has more than what I know.

Shoot marvel can't even use Mephisto(who is a cosmic character not a spiritual like would think) in a Doctor Strange movie because of Ghost Rider with Sony.
