USA Today have debuted some stunning new pics from the first part of Peter Jackson's new Tolkien trilogy, featuring brand new shots of Bilbo, The Dwarves, Gollum, Gandalf, and our first good look at Sylvester McCoy as the Wizard, Radagast The Brown..

The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.

Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever…Gollum.

Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s "precious" ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey hits theaters December 14th.

whoa what's up with Gollum? he looks kind of funky to me for some reason, even though he didn't in other pics I've seen
Zarog - 9/16/2012, 9:30 PM
His eyes are a deeper shade of blue. I think that's the difference.
Brady1138 - 9/16/2012, 9:33 PM
Gollum looks kind of weird. I think it's just the picture, though.

Finally, we get a look at Radagast!!!
RaMan - 9/16/2012, 9:43 PM
The last picture reminds me of this..

thewonderer - 9/16/2012, 9:59 PM
This movie will rock
ItsLiveFeed - 9/16/2012, 10:04 PM

THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 9/16/2012, 10:19 PM
Gollum looks weird.
soberchimera - 9/16/2012, 10:28 PM
By weird do you mean exactly the same as the last three movies?
Kiltman - 9/16/2012, 10:32 PM
Think it's just the angle with Gollum....but you can really see how much better he looks under the skin and the skin texture itself. Veining, wrinkles, etc.
AnonymousGuy - 9/16/2012, 10:34 PM
Gollum has baby blues? How come I never really noticed that before?
Grimm - 9/16/2012, 10:39 PM
incredible... It's gonna be as epic as LOTR, but I think that goes without saying
ItsLiveFeed - 9/16/2012, 10:43 PM

THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 9/16/2012, 10:55 PM
How long has it been since you've seen the last three movies? He looks different. Eye color and complexion.

I wonder if people realize that eyes generally don't have that icy blue color when its in dark lighting
Ceejay - 9/17/2012, 12:46 AM
There are 77 years between LOTR and The Hobbit, naturally Gollum will look younger despite the one-ring dramatically slowing his ageing process.
Ceejay - 9/17/2012, 1:08 AM
@CaptainProg - He doesn't! :p
WinterSoldier24 - 9/17/2012, 1:10 AM
I never understood the passion for these books. I knew people in high school that read 'em. They played D&D & shit like that. It's just a bunch of walking & talking. NYC is like that & if you wanna see some real-life "Gollums", head down to your local skid row.

Books, as well as their movie counterparts, are a total snoozefest.

Ceejay - 9/17/2012, 1:19 AM
LOTR Gandalf

Hobbit Gandalf

Besides, he's a wizard, they do magic so he can look like whatever he likes so nuhh! :p

"Do not meddle in the affairs of wizards, for they are subtle and quick to anger" - Gildor, LOTR.
Ceejay - 9/17/2012, 1:31 AM
@WinterSoldier24 - That's because they're books, not comics. they require a higher understanding and intelligence to thoroughly appreciate all the aspects of the creative literature. There are no simple pictures with simple captions for simple mind consumption, I guess!

And the movies are not popcorn flick length stuff with brief editing for the music video generation either. They're grand epics full of rich cinematography, inspired musical scores, creative set designs, lavishly rendered costumes and empathy inducing performances. Compared to the simple formatted movies your programmed to accept as the norm they are like a four-course feast fit for a king versus a McDonalds Happy meal.

@Ceejay: Like a [frick]ing boss.
jj2112 - 9/17/2012, 2:14 AM
'Nuff said Ceejay. Only things I've seen so far that I would change are Radagast and the "handsome" dwarf, he's the only one without any prosthetics and looks like a human.
Ceejay - 9/17/2012, 2:57 AM
@jj2112 - lol, the "handsome" dwarf is so because he's Thorin Oakenshield who descends from a line of dwarf kings. He's naturally going to look more well-to-do than the other average dwarfs because of his inherent affluence.

As for Radagast the Brown, he's supposed to look more docile than the more formidable wizards because of his affinity for nature and all living creatures and flora. The concerns of men, dwarfs and elves are less of his concern in comparison which is why he does not feature in the further tales of middle-earth.
marvel72 - 9/17/2012, 3:20 AM
i bet gandalf & gollum steal the show in this trilogy as they did the last.
Facade - 9/17/2012, 5:25 AM
@itslivefeed...the gollum of The Hobbit is mote preserved by the ring because it's still in his possesion and he's not worn by pursuing the theif who stole it from him. Traveling in the wilderness and providing for ones self will age a person rapidly.
Facade - 9/17/2012, 5:28 AM
As for the "more walking" issue: um, it's an adventure movie. The next complaint will be: for [frick]s sake, more sword fighting!
jj2112 - 9/17/2012, 5:32 AM
@ Ceejay I don't mean Thorin but the young-looking one, I think Thorin has the right look.
QuanZen - 9/17/2012, 5:41 AM
@ Stigmartyr Agreed.
sarahsatire - 9/17/2012, 6:15 AM
@Stigmartyr Also agree. Gandalf's fight with the Balrog is one of the standout scenes of the entire trilogy for me. That being said, after watching that clip again, I can't believe anyone would be even slightly worried about The Hobbit movies considering it is in the careful hands of Peter Jackson. We're in for three glorious movies, which is one more than I had expected to get, so I am triply happy to have that many more quality films to look forward to. :)
RorMachine - 9/17/2012, 6:23 AM
That Kevin Smith "it's just people walking" rubbish is probably the single most ridiculous criticism I've ever heard. So the Star Wars movies are just people flying in spaceships, The Avengers was just people standing on a hellicarrier?
CoulsonLives - 9/17/2012, 6:40 AM
No matter how much grif say shit on any news article... I'll just laugh... grif is too mainstream XD
sarahsatire - 9/17/2012, 6:44 AM
@monkey I have to be honest, I was disappointed when Guillermo del Toro was no longer attached to direct The Hobbit. At the same time, I was relieved to know that Peter Jackson was taking the helm again. In the hands of a director who doesn't understand/appreciate the material it could have been an epic disaster. Guillermo truly had his heart set on this project, and I whole-heartedly believe that he could have delivered a wonderful addition to the Tolkien universe -- just to see his interpretations of the dwellers of Middle Earth alone would have been worth the ticket price (multiple times over). The circumstances around his departure are sad, and although I would have loved a new pair of eyes, I am still rooting for Jackson.
CrimsonReign - 9/17/2012, 6:50 AM
Going to be amazing!!
riseofloganX36 - 9/17/2012, 6:56 AM
Looking gawsome cain't wait to go back to middle earth.

And really people your bitching about the color of golum's eyes. get over it people guit your bitching about stupid shit! He looks like Golum to me.

And GRIF hates a movie theres something new.

Gusev8 - 9/17/2012, 7:02 AM
Are you guys stupid ? there are a lot of reasons why Gollum looks a little bit different. He is 77 years younger, he is in possesion of the ring so the ring is extending his life and he is not tortured by Sauron yet.... !
StarkAnthony - 9/17/2012, 7:04 AM
I don't think it's the color, I think they're bigger in this picture than in others. Maybe the color and the lighting just make it look that way. I've seen other Hobbit pics where he looks normal besides perhaps being slightly younger
pepe - 9/17/2012, 7:14 AM
Why is it that every scene with Frodo and Sam... They almost kiss. Its so gay... but with hobbits.
sarahsatire - 9/17/2012, 7:23 AM
@Stigmartyr It's not out of the realm of possibility that they could have had a beef. If anything the battle showcased Gandalf's unbreakable will to protect the fellowship and preserve their mission to destroy the ring. He knew what this ancient Balrog was capable of, and without him it could have very well wiped out the group -- he was the only one who had a chance of matching it's menacing power. Made me really appreciate how valuable an ally Gandalf is.
Garytenandtwo - 9/17/2012, 7:29 AM
Looking forward to this!
