CONFIRMED: Brett Ratner To Direct Dwayne Johnson In HERCULES; Production Begins Next Year

We've known about this movie for a while now, and both director Brett Ratner (X-Men: The Last Stand) and star Dwayne Johnson (Fast Five) have been linked to the project nearly ever since it was first announced. Their involvement has now been confirmed, as have a few other minor details!

Deadline and various other sources have confirmed that Hercules is indeed moving ahead with Brett Ratner at the helm and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson attached to star. While both parties have been "in talks" for a while now (though the latter was recently confirmed as being signed up), the news that the film is definitely moving ahead came alongside the announcement that it will be co-produced by Paramount Pictures and MGM Studios. The site also goes on to mention that production is expected to begin early next year, despite earlier reports indicating that filming would start in New Zealand LAST MONTH. The screenplay was adapted by relative newcomer Ryan Condal from Radical Studio's graphic novel Hercules: The Thracian Wars. Below is a description of that story.

Fourteen hundred years ago, a tormented soul walked the earth that was neither man nor god. Hercules was the powerful son of the god king Zeus, for this he received nothing but suffering his entire life. After twelve arduous labors and the loss of his family, this dark, world-weary soul turned his back on the gods finding his only solace in bloody battle. Over the years he warmed to the company of six similar souls, their only bond being their love of fighting and presence of death. These men and woman never question where they go to fight or why or whom, just how much they will be paid. Now the King of Thrace has hired these mercenaries to train his men to become the greatest army of all time. It is time for this bunch of lost souls to finally have their eyes opened to how far they have fallen when they must train an army to become as ruthless and blood thirsty as their reputation has become.

It's quite sad when "Directors" like Brett Ratner keep getting work.
Happy11 - 11/7/2012, 3:02 PM

JDUKE25 - 11/7/2012, 3:18 PM
Johnson as Hercules would be good. But Ratner? No
jimpinto24 - 11/7/2012, 3:22 PM
Brett Ratner did murder X-Men 3! There are other directors better to helm Hercules besides Ratner???
JULEZ13 - 11/7/2012, 3:23 PM
I love the Rock but I don't see him as Hercules.

Bret Ratner..... uhh... yeeeaahhhh...

Even the plot description sounds poor.
AztecRainGod - 11/7/2012, 3:38 PM
No wonder he looked all roided the fock out in that Halloween picture. He must be juicing for this new flick.

I like the sound of the story line. Whether Ratner can bring the torment and struggle to life on screen of the main characters could be a challenge.
BlueDemon - 11/7/2012, 3:45 PM
I bet even a porn directed by Ratner would have a shittier story. Replace this hack
santoanderson - 11/7/2012, 3:47 PM
To Ratner
rat·ner (rtnr)
1. To shit one's pants and call it a movie
Comixguy - 11/7/2012, 3:47 PM
If the first line in that press release is any indication of the quality of the movie, I'm no looking forward to it....Fourteen hundred years ago? 600AD? Sure, that sounds like about the right period for a Hercules
third3ye - 11/7/2012, 3:50 PM
Sounds like garbage.
toco89 - 11/7/2012, 3:52 PM

Yeah...yeah. Sounds like a cool premise.

Redeem thy self Ratner. Reading the souce material might help. Cuz I don't wanna believe he really read any Xmen and made X3.
DeanVanHalen - 11/7/2012, 3:54 PM
Is this Marvel's Hercules?
HelaGood - 11/7/2012, 3:54 PM
this falls in the 'who the [frick] asked for this one?' category
Ragnaroknroll - 11/7/2012, 3:58 PM
This is disappointing primarily because it will most likely postpone the appearance of Hercules in the MCU.
evilness - 11/7/2012, 4:01 PM
well i know what i'll be skipping
animeex - 11/7/2012, 4:02 PM
Oh good... Brett just saved me a movie ticket and popcorn money.
CharacterAssassin - 11/7/2012, 4:04 PM
I get it... they're making a spoof of Hercules.
AnotherSinisterClone - 11/7/2012, 4:19 PM
what a shame, ive become a fan of Dwayne, love him in the Rundown, getting raped by monkeys, but Brett Ratnet ruins everything he touches.
Spectre94 - 11/7/2012, 4:28 PM
Concept sounds cool, and I love Dwayne Johnson, but I cannot imagine Brett Ratner doing this. DON't know, want to be excited, but Brett Ratner completely ruined X3
Tony93 - 11/7/2012, 4:29 PM
Good Piont LEVITIKUZ.. and hopefully away from STARWARS :)
gambgel - 11/7/2012, 4:52 PM

TheAmazingSpiderMan47 - 11/7/2012, 4:59 PM
hercules story is one of the largest in greek myth ... far too much for one movie ... OH NO NOT A TRILOGY
MyInnerDork - 11/7/2012, 5:05 PM
Ratner = no thanks.
KingEmperor - 11/7/2012, 5:14 PM
Brett Ratner lolz.
Kinski - 11/7/2012, 5:16 PM
It must be a hard life for Brett. Knowing before you even start production that your film is going to suck sweaty bollocks and dissapoint everyone who sees it. I almost feel bad for him...
superman7 - 11/7/2012, 5:16 PM
I hope that date is a typo bc Hercules would have existed a LOT longer than 1400 years ago. Minimum of 3400 years ago actually.
SanFranLand - 11/7/2012, 5:18 PM
@deanvanhalen I really don't think so. Keep Ratner's dirty hands off Marvel!!!

@Levitikuz- Hahahaha! Absolutely.

I cannot say enough how much of a douche this guy is. My girlfriend when I lived in LA worked on the Universal lot when this dumb ass barges into her office space, sits his ass down on her desk, and peruses through one of her magazines. All the while on his phone. Epitome of Hollywood scum that thinks they are the coolest thing.

Well, hands off the comics Bretty Boy. Go screw up Hercules!!
Dynamo - 11/7/2012, 5:24 PM
Jesus that's a cheery synopsis isn't it? It goes out of it's way to tell you how much Hercules life sucked.
FightAs0ne - 11/7/2012, 5:27 PM
@KamenRiderJ22 The first one wasn't that bad to me. But the second and third? Good lord those shouldn't have been made.
alekesam - 11/7/2012, 5:35 PM
Brett Ratner did not destroy X3, Fox did. I'll admit that Ratner's only as good as the material (script/story) and actors he has to work with and isn't good (to me at least) at elevating a script/idea into something better than what's on the page.

With that said, everything that happened story and production-wise is strictly Fox's doing, including driving Singer away for not letting him do both X3 and Superman Returns, which chain-reacted into Cyclops' unnecessary death due to Marsden being unavailable.

Honestly, had Ratner not have had to shoehorn the remarkably different Phoenix Saga into the movie, it would've worked quite well.

Oh yeah, on topic: The Rock is about to open a can of whupass as Hercules.
