DUNGEONS & DRAGONS Movie Rights Acquired By Warner Bros.

DUNGEONS & DRAGONS Movie Rights Acquired By Warner Bros.

Deadline is reporting that Warner Bros. has acquired the rights to make a movie about the popular role-playing fantasy game, Dungeons & Dragons. Come find out who penned the script for WB.

According to Deadline, Warner Bros. has gotten ahold of the movie rights for Dungeons & Dragons.

The studio is actually quite far along in the development of the project, as it will use a script by Wrath Of The Titans and Red Riding Hood scribe and Frank Darabont protege David Leslie Johnson.

The film will be produced by Roy Lee ("The Lego Movie") and Courtney Solomon. Courtney, should be familiar to D&D fans, as Courtney was the director of a previous D&D film, that starred Jeremy Irons. Wait, Jeremy Irons was in a Dungeons & Dragons film? My how the mighty have fallen.

For WB, the plan to make every effort to turn Dungeons & Dragons into their next Harry Potter-like franchise. With the popularity of other fantasy films and shows, like HBO Game Of Thrones it's not hard to see why WB feels this is the time to tap into the genre.

This has way more potential than the other movies based on games! (I'm looking at you, BATTLESHIP!)

What about World of Warcraft?
Goggles - 5/7/2013, 4:20 PM
It's a shame that any new D&D film will always live in the shadows of the cinematic masterpiece that was released in 2000.
DrDoom - 5/7/2013, 4:26 PM
Will Jeremy Irons be coming back? His performance was stellar.
Omarvls - 5/7/2013, 4:32 PM
Not this again

Vin Diesel belongs in this, he loves it. Had a tattoo of his character on his chest for xXx
m0th3r - 5/7/2013, 4:36 PM
Drizzt, Drizzt, Drizzt, Drizzt...that is all.
GodzillaKart - 5/7/2013, 4:38 PM
OK. I am a nerd of the highest order. I would love a good D&D movie.
m0th3r - 5/7/2013, 4:38 PM
The book "The Crystal Shard" is written almost like a screenplay. The absolute PERFECT movie setup. Four Heroes each of a fantasy race (Drizzt, Wulfgar, Bruenor, and Regis), Evil Wizard, A Nasty Demon, An asshole town Councilmen([frick] Kemp), and a giant horde of giants, orcs and goblins...awesomefun..
OrgasmicPotatoe - 5/7/2013, 4:39 PM
No matter what they do, they will never top this

GodzillaKart - 5/7/2013, 4:42 PM
@m0th3r: Agreed.
DarthMauve - 5/7/2013, 4:45 PM
What about World of Warcraft?

Didnt the WoW movie recently get Duncan Jones attached to direct?
christianroch - 5/7/2013, 5:52 PM
I want a movie about the Dragonlance saga!
Grimfoe - 5/7/2013, 5:56 PM
Listen: I would love for this movie to work and it could be very entertaining, but it will not be! This movie will suck. It will suck for many reasons, but most especially because WB treats all of its scifi, fantasy and comic book material with complete disdain and is extremely condescending toward us, the fans. The movie will be cheesy, poorly thought out and poorly edited. It will appeal only to children and the most simple of fans.

Definitely need everyone's favorite Drow Ranger.

Crystal Shard would be amazing on the big screen, if it was done right.

But honestly, they really should get Salvatore involved in the screenplay regardless of whether they use Drzz't or not.

Or at the very least use him as a creative consultant on the movie.

I'm excited to see more high fantasy films.
BubblesShedAndBreakfast - 5/7/2013, 6:03 PM
I loved the old cartoon series as a kid. Think I'll look up some old episodes online smoke a bowl and go back in time.:)
Ultron8872 - 5/7/2013, 6:04 PM
Here's another thought:

Dragon Lance Chronicles.

That would make for a great trilogy, if done right.
LucasMend - 5/7/2013, 6:30 PM
Nothing can beat this overacting
Rowsdower - 5/7/2013, 6:37 PM
Does this include rights to Forgotten Realms?

Tom Hiddleston would be a badass Drizzt.
m0th3r - 5/7/2013, 6:50 PM
@Ultron8872 TOTALLY AGREE..RA would have to be involved from begining

@Rowsdower After thinking bout Hiddleston as Drizzt...well i need a towel...that would be baller
m0th3r - 5/7/2013, 6:51 PM
Wow...look...take DC vs Marvel out of equation and you can have more then 5 constructive comments....awesome..
USAgent - 5/7/2013, 6:54 PM
As previously stated, using the characters from the Icewind Dale trilogy and done correctly, would be money in the back. Of course you'd have to do the first three Drizzt books first then role into that. And I agree about Salvatore being involved, his books are literal D&D gold. Outside of that Dragonlance would be kick ass. Tap Weiss and Hickman to assist the project and you'd have another sound hit trilogy, if done correctly.

I always take an article serious when the first thing I see is Chang and the last is Troy...

darkcrow - 5/7/2013, 8:42 PM
I remember when I used to be excited about something like this, it's just after the crappy one the already made I feel like punching someone in the pooper every time I see an article about a possible upcoming D&D movie
KeithM - 5/7/2013, 9:11 PM
Just as long as they don't make any references to the game, or game mechanics. That would be a quick way to certain fail.

The rules are just there to allow DMs and players to tell stories. So let's hope the D&D part is just an in to the stories and worlds that are part of it.

Did anyone say Drizzt?

Not Hiddleston. Needs to be a black dude.
KeithM - 5/7/2013, 9:19 PM
They could have multiple franchises from this, come to think about it - Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance, Greyhawk, Dark Sun, Planescape, etc. - if they throw some money and good talent at it, the potential is huge.
AUSSYACE - 5/7/2013, 9:26 PM
This would easily make the perfect franchise...
Shadowelfz - 5/7/2013, 9:56 PM
m0ther - Dont forget the Ice Dragon too ;)

I say a Forgotten Realms Drizzt story or GTFO. Actually the Dark Elf triliogy compressed into one movie would be pretty cool too though Crystal Shard would be equally good.

Newbus - 5/7/2013, 11:12 PM
They should make it like 80s cartoon.
Mars3times - 5/7/2013, 11:38 PM
Warner Brothers: Where your favorite movie rights go to live in development hell for eternity...
m0th3r - 5/7/2013, 11:38 PM
@Shadowelfz oooo man that would make a great scene..from the swim to the kill...
m0th3r - 5/7/2013, 11:54 PM
The Battle of Ten Towns would make a great ending...go back and grab it..it opens With Regis Fishing..is sooo perfect.

Plus the books has a lot of social commentary...
Shadowelfz - 5/8/2013, 4:51 AM
Agreed. It would be a good chance for the studios to test Drizzt on the big screen since you know theyre wary of putting a dark elf on at the moment. If they do use crystal shard I hope they do a flash back scene from the DET where Drizzt first meats Bruenor and Cattie. Loved those scenes in the book.
ComicFan1134 - 5/8/2013, 5:32 AM
This, Like The Past Attempts, Will Suck.
TheJester - 5/8/2013, 7:57 AM
It doesn't matter....the writing team is shit and hired the same producer? Are you [frick]ing seriously kidding me?
