GAME OF THRONES Showrunners Say Season 4 Has More Action Than Previous Seasons

David Benioff and Dan Weiss, the brain trust behind HBO's hit adaptation of George R.R. Martin's sword and fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire, discuss the upcoming fourth season of Game of Thrones.

Season 4 of HBO's Game of Thrones premiere's April 6th and will "mostly" follow the second half of "A Storm of Swords", the third book in the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series from author George R.R. Martin. In an interview with Vanity Fair, executive producers David Benioff and Dan Weiss spoke about what's to come this season. Benioff told the magazine that season 4 was the hardest to shoot, simply because they're venturing into uncharted VFX territory. Weiss echoed his producer partner, adding that, "The sorts of visual-effect type things that we hadn’t really done before," is what made up the bulk of season 4's complexity.

Benioff narrowed in on Khaleesi's dragons, saying they're going to get bigger and bigger each season. He also added, "[Season 4] was more action this season than there ever has been before. And it’s just much more time consuming. To shoot a decent fight, you need to cover all the different angles, and it ends up eating a lot of days. But the actors have gotten better at the fighting. Yesterday we were watching this fight scene with Kit Harington [Jon Snow] in it, and he did this movement — “Is that sped up? Because it looks a little — ”. Weiss jumped in, "That looks fake! Let’s take the frame-rate…” But he was actually moving a thousand miles an hour with a heavy sword in his hand. He’s good. He’s really good."

Due to the sheer length of the third novel, which is roughly 1.5 times the size of the first novel, the events of A Stomr of Swords will be split over two seasons. The cruel reign of the boy-king Joffrey Baratheon continues thanks to an alliance with House Tyrell. King of the North Robb Stark must decide whether to remain in the field against the Lannisters or return to Winterfell and address the actions of a traitor. Bran Stark journeys across a frozen wasteland to reach The Wall and what lies beyond. Daenerys Targaryen searches for an army to take back her homeland. Jon Snow must navigated dangerous waters filled with White Walkers and the bloodthirsty wildlings of the King-Beyond-the-Wall Mance Rayder."

Well there is War in the North, War across the narrow Sea with the slaves, and War in the South. So yeah, lots of war.

Damn straight. Can't wait to see what happens between Lizzie and her husband.
Pasto - 3/18/2014, 5:47 AM
I have no clue. I do know that NBC HAS to have it come back for a second season. The show is deserving of one.
Pasto - 3/18/2014, 5:49 AM
And they killed off the ONLY cool black character on the show. He told that bitch not to call Lizzie.

When has the show ever had too much action. Most of the time the show consisted off talking and more talking.
revloveR - 3/18/2014, 7:31 AM
so, those who've read the books, how many more seasons do you reckon this'll go on for? I'm ready for Jon to reign.
ScorpioRisin - 3/18/2014, 8:05 AM
Like 3 or 4 more, since they're already gonna introduce elements from book 4 and 5 in this season.

This show is full of people who are dead and resurrected.
Essentially immortal unless beheaded or pierced through the heart etc.

I can't wait for the new novel to come out and unleash the real story to the masses.

"When has the show ever had too much action. Most of the time the show consisted off talking and more talking."

Have you even watched the show? Sure there's exposition, but there's literally no other way to develop the world without having people talk about it. Besides, the action and drama in the series far outweighs the "talking and more talking."

Is talking, good acting, and world-building too boring for your attention span? Go watch The Walking Dead where nothing makes sense character-wise or plot-wise, but hey, the characters barely ever talk to each other and at least there's tons of zombie action, right??
revloveR - 3/18/2014, 10:10 AM
@scorpiorisin, i read that those books 2 books are interwoven so that makes sense.
batfan175 - 3/18/2014, 12:54 PM
@SauronsBANE1: You're absolutely right. If character development is considered boring then these peope don't know what a complex character is supposed to be. Anyone can swing a sword around and hak people to bits in atv show but it's difficult to make you like a previously hateful asshole like jaime Lannister if all you have are fights and action scenes. plus, the real intrigue dioes not happen on the battlefiled and many thngs that people might consider pointless now will have a significance in the seasons down the line/ Action alone won't do it. I prefer seeingthe characters interact with each other. The characters are what made the books great, not the action or the sex and I wished people'd read the damn books so they'd understand that finally.
SauronsBANE - 3/18/2014, 2:50 PM
@batfan175, Completely agree! Do people realize just how incredible it was to have an attempted murderer, who's in an incestuous relationship, somehow turn into this sympathetic, semi-heroic, and 3-dimensional character in the span of less than a season?? And there's so many cases of characters like Jamie Lannister going through amazing character arcs.

The show isn't about mindless battles or sex's political intrigue, it's themes like honor and morality and posing the question if those qualities do you any good in a world like Westeros, it's pitting the most eccentric and unusual characters against each other and seeing how they react, it's playing the game.

But don't expect more people to read the books, because the type of people who complain about the amount of talking in the show are the same ones who don't bother with reading anything longer than the length of an article on They'd never bother with reading full-length novels. It's sad, really.
MightyZeus - 3/18/2014, 6:38 PM
@SauronsBANE1, I've watched the entirety of Season 1 and i've read about the show. Sure there can be dialogue and talking in the show essential to the story and attributed to character development "The Walking Dead does that perfectly but most of the time it just takes too long for the plots to succumb into fruition and most of the time it includes explicit sex scenes, nudity, rape, women that are succumbed to beatings. I was just surprised that the show announced that this season will have more "action" and i was simply voicing from what i've experienced from the show. Most of the time i was just bored while watching the show.

I cant believe you are outraged at my comment.
