Guy Ritchie's KING ARTHUR Coming In 2016

Guy Ritchie's KING ARTHUR Coming In 2016

We had word that Warner Bros. wanted the Sherlock Holmes director for a 6-movie King Arthur saga back in January, and now Variety confirm that we'll be getting a first one at any rate, as a 2016 release date has been set. Read on for more.

According to Variety, Warner Bros.’ King Arthur is set to hit theaters on July 22, 2016. Guy Ritchie (Snatch, Sherlock Holmes, Swept Away) will direct, with Joby Harold (Awake, Edge Of Tomorrow) on script duty. It was rumored that WB were looking at Ritchie to bring a six-film take on the classic tale to the screen, but Variety make no mention of that in their report. There have been various movies, comics and tv shows based around Arthurian legend over the years, including the underrated Camelot and the mediocre Disney produced flick with Clive Owen in the title role. The most successful take was arguably John Boorman's Excalibur back in 1981. Akiva Goldsman and Tory Tunnell will produce, no cast is in place yet.

jp688 - 4/11/2014, 3:16 AM
Screw King Arthur (Clive Owen version is my favorite - LOVED it!!!). Where the heck is The Man From UNCLE?
TheGoddamnPeel - 4/11/2014, 3:17 AM
If it's anything like the BBC TV show Merlin, I'd be down for this movie. As long as they get good charismatic actors for the role, I'm sold.

Got excited though when I read 'King Arthur' and immediately thought of Aquaman XD
ChrispyG - 4/11/2014, 3:22 AM
I loved Excalibur, but I actually really dug the 2004 King Arthur as well(granted, the violent director's cut is the only version I ever saw). I'm a fan of a lot of the guys that made up that ensemble.
SaxoWolf - 4/11/2014, 3:24 AM
I'm a sucker for historical movies. Bring it!
grif - 4/11/2014, 3:26 AM
and when those 6 movies are done and released they will consider thinking about making a dc movie.
TopCat89 - 4/11/2014, 3:29 AM
King Arthur - "Do you want sugar with ya tea Merlin?"

Merlin - "No thanks Arthur....I'm sweet enough!"
Doopie - 4/11/2014, 3:35 AM
TopCat lol

Arthur - "What's happening with them sausages Galahad?"

Galahad - "Five minutes Arthur"

Arthur - "It was two minutes five minutes ago"

Mothchild - 4/11/2014, 3:43 AM
It should be King Arthur Curry of Atlantis
pepe - 4/11/2014, 3:46 AM
All hail to the new king: Hydra
loki668 - 4/11/2014, 3:46 AM
Depends on which "Arthur" they're doing

Lozzy - 4/11/2014, 3:47 AM
WB, what about some DC movies?
TopCat89 - 4/11/2014, 3:47 AM
@Doopie Hahaha

Peasant - "Master Merlin, Master Merlin....Arthur pulled the sword out of the stone!"

Merlin - "In the quiet words of the Virgin Mary....come again?"
SaxoWolf - 4/11/2014, 3:51 AM
Maybe Ritchie will direct a future dc movie. Aquaman or Hawkman ? I'm game
Lozzy - 4/11/2014, 3:54 AM
Wait, so what does this mean for Sherlock Holmes 3?
Abary - 4/11/2014, 4:00 AM
Mothchild - 4/11/2014, 4:03 AM
I'd prefer to hear DCCU plans
Jumpman - 4/11/2014, 4:11 AM
WB picked that date for King Arthur to force Marvel Studios to move Captain America 3 to April 2016.

Your move, Marvel.
marvelstudios - 4/11/2014, 4:12 AM
How about another Sherlock Holmes instalment instead?
Lozzy - 4/11/2014, 4:25 AM

If anyone is moving to April its WB. Marvel had that date first.
Jumpman - 4/11/2014, 4:31 AM

We'll see. With the Winter Soldier's massive April opening, if anything, Marvel might decide that April's the new May for them. It makes sense, considering what just happened last week.

I do find it funny that if another Marvel movie (from Fox or Sony)had picked May 6th, 2016, I don't see Marvel Studios making a big fuss about it.

Just sayin'.
Lozzy - 4/11/2014, 4:33 AM

Im pretty sure if any studio put a blockbuster type movie on that date Marvel would be just as mad.
MrCBM56 - 4/11/2014, 4:40 AM
WB is more than just a Dc studio. They distribute a ton of other movies. And at this point, with all the successful franchises they have or will have, I highly doubt the DCCU is a primary focus for them.
Jumpman - 4/11/2014, 4:41 AM

No they wouldn't. Why aren't they up in arms that Amazing 2 has the May 2nd slot this year?

The opening weekend of May may have historically been Marvel's since the release of Spider-Man back in 2002 but they don't own it.

I still believe marking "untitled Marvel movie, May 2016" doesn't mean anything. Had they announced Cap 3 as that movie originally and then WB moved Superman vs. Batman after that, I'd be fully behind Marvel Studios on this one.

I'm not. They announced nothing but "a movie" with no specifics. WB had every right to take that spot because they had a film further along in pre-production and the scripting phase than the "untitled" movie.

Just my two cents....

Either way, this move by WB with King Arthur signals that they're not screwing around about Superman vs. Batman staying on that date. And since Marvel has shown that they can open any film at any time, why not move Captain America 3 to April 2016. They'd have a whole month to themselves. Superman vs. Batman would only have about 2 weeks before the next major film that that summer. A whole month is better than just having two weeks.
Comedian03 - 4/11/2014, 4:43 AM
Love Guy Ritchie's movies, and I love the legend of King Arthur, so this is one movie I'm definitely excited for.

The Clive Owen, King Arthur movie was excellent I thought, it's still one of my favorite underrated movies.
thor2273 - 4/11/2014, 4:44 AM
I really liked the BBC(Syfy here in the US) Merlin show so this could be good.
JohnTom88 - 4/11/2014, 4:48 AM
Ok Disney, let's gangbang this movie with Dr Strange and Incredibles 2
Lozzy - 4/11/2014, 4:48 AM

I am pretty sure Sony had that may 2014 date first.
MightyZeus - 4/11/2014, 4:50 AM
Thank you WB's for not focusing more on your DC properties and for making a film that has been done already in so many variations.

Jumpman - 4/11/2014, 4:54 AM
Sony and Marvel Studios do communicate. Why do you think Amazing 2 got May this year then June 2016 for Amazing 3? It coincides with the dates Marvel Studios wants. Fox and Marvel Studios? Not so much, hence the reason you won't see any X-Men film opening on the first weekend of May ever. Now, technically, the X-Men franchise has always opened in or around Memorial Weekend but still, Fox and Marvel Studios don't play nice.

loki668 - 4/11/2014, 4:57 AM
Hail Hydra?

Niklander - 4/11/2014, 5:02 AM
Guy Ritchie doing a King Arthur movie?!He better cast my man Liam Neeson as Merlin because

This new Key & Peele video with Liam Neesons is my jam tho.
AvatarIII - 4/11/2014, 5:04 AM
Shame this is WB, and therefore not a secret Captain Britain prequel.
Nubase - 4/11/2014, 5:07 AM
This is old news, it was widely known that WB were looking at another fantasy genre movie to replace LOTR and the almost complete Hobbit trilogy as they want keep the fans of those movies to make them watch these movies

WB are franchase kings, that's how they operate, they had the Harry Potter movies, LOTR and Hobbit and now they are gona focus on King Arthur and the DCCU, those will be the 2 main projects for WB from now on
rora - 4/11/2014, 5:12 AM
I LOVED Lock, stock and two smoking barrels, Rockn'rolla and Sherlock Holmes. I'm happy for anything where Guy Ritchie directs even if I'm a bit gutted that means we won't see Sherlock Holmes very soon...
Enphlieuwince - 4/11/2014, 5:21 AM
Great start.
