J.K. Rowling Reveals Plans To Bring A HARRY POTTER Prequel To The Stage

Warner Bros. are already planning on expanding the world of Harry Potter for the big screen, but J.K. Rowling announced plans this week to create a stage play telling the story of what it like to be the boy in the cupboard under the stairs. Intrigued? Read on for details!

J.K. Rowling is pleased to announce that she is collaborating with the award-winning theatre producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender on a new stage play to be based on the Harry Potter stories.

What was it like to be the boy in the cupboard under the stairs? This brand new play, which will be developed for the UK theatre, will explore the previously untold story of Harry's early years as an orphan and outcast. Featuring some of our favourite characters from the Harry Potter books, this new work will offer a unique insight into the heart and mind of the now legendary young wizard. A seemingly ordinary boy, but one for whom Destiny has plans...

J.K. Rowling will also be a co-producer on the project, but whilst she will collaborate with a writer on the new play, she will not write the script herself.

J.K. Rowling said:

"Over the years I have received countless approaches about turning Harry Potter into a theatrical production, but Sonia and Colin’s vision was the only one that really made sense to me, and which had the sensitivity, intensity and intimacy I thought appropriate for bringing Harry's story to the stage. After a year in gestation it is exciting to see this project moving on to the next phase. I’d like to thank Warner Bros. for their continuing support in this project."

Writers and directors are now being considered, and the project will move into development in 2014.

russburlingame - 12/22/2013, 8:36 AM
Duke, I'm guessing since you know for sure those other projects aren't in development that you knew all about this play during the year leading up to this announcement, right? I mean, an insider like you would have to. You know this site is user generated and could really have used a scoop like this, eh? Next time, write that shit up!
bazinga85 - 12/22/2013, 8:37 AM
This isn't a movie, it's a play.
NovaCorpsFan - 12/22/2013, 8:40 AM
Just let it go. Please, let it go.
DylansMyDog - 12/22/2013, 8:42 AM
This sounds like the least interesting aspect of the HP universe they could possibly make a play of.
QuestiontheAnswer - 12/22/2013, 8:46 AM
@DukeNukem Because those wouldn't be lucrative projects for WB.
LexHairFight - 12/22/2013, 8:47 AM

Good for her.
KingRainbow - 12/22/2013, 8:48 AM
So... it's "Harry Potter, the boy wizard," without the wizard part...?
So... it's just, "Harry Potter, the boy?"
DrunkenNukem - 12/22/2013, 8:52 AM
@russburlingame whyy so pissed ?? did i say something wrong?? are any of those dc great superheroes getting developed from WB??No and everybody knows that....what i dont like its WB planning on expanding the world of Harry Potter for the big screen i mean why??..i know this is play..but WB could take this play and turn this in to a movie in some future..
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 12/22/2013, 8:52 AM
I wonder if this series will ever be rebooted in the far future
Xuperthorman - 12/22/2013, 8:52 AM
Enough already
LexHairFight - 12/22/2013, 8:54 AM
THe thing about WB that I just don't understand is they are happy to prioritize every licensed trilogy/franchise they can, but are so slow moving for their own DC projects. They've certainly demonstrated fear in the last, but why are they so happy to commit to these other projects? Is there a bias some people can't get over? Do they need someone new to pitch the projects? Maybe the DC side is understaffed and no real leader over there to outline a vision.

It just seems in stark contrast to they way Harry Potter or the Hobbit run.
MsDarkPhoenix - 12/22/2013, 8:55 AM
Something like this??
DrunkenNukem - 12/22/2013, 8:55 AM
@QuestiontheAnswer....maybe they wouldn´t because WB is affraid for what happened to GL...but if if they do a Flash movie properly..that could be lucrative they just have to take that "risk"..or maybe hawkman..who is one of my favorites..even aquaman could be a lucrative surprise like the first thor movie was

@aTHORableSight agreed

Why are people questioning this being done? The movies made money this will too why else would they make it?

DukeNukem - where did you read movie? Its a play they're talking about here...
TheDarkKnightofSteel - 12/22/2013, 10:33 AM
Are we seriously going to question why WB is ready to back anything related to HP over other projects that they have control over? The HP movie for 10 years were consistent on making money. When adjusted for inflation every single HP film made over 1B on the box office. This is the most lucratice franchise of all time we are talking about not Twilight or The Hunger Games(which is a great franchise, though).

Anyway,i'm sure WB has plans for more DC properties. But you can't possibly expect a studio to NOT get invensted in other projects outside the DC film. It's like saying that WB should drop Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them in order to make an Aquaman film or a WW film even though the former is sure to make more money.

Seriously?I love Harry Potter and i also love my girlfrien)although she seems that she loves Henry Cavill more).Being an HP fan does not make anyone "homosexual".There are people out there that actually grew up with these films and books.
Super12 - 12/22/2013, 11:36 AM
This has absolutely nothing to do with comic book movies or DC properties people...RELAX. @DukeNukem dude take a chill pill and learn how to read, this is a PLAY as in THEATER. So my money is on it never having to grace your presence anyway as I'm guessing you're not the theater type.

WB is about making money, and some folks have pointed out HP is a goldmine. WB has a ton of areas it can focus on without taking away from the DC Entertainment division. Relax.
Super12 - 12/22/2013, 11:39 AM
@DudeGuyMan - seriously? Grow up dude. There's nothing gay about Harry Potter. Attacking it is like attacking any other work of fantasy fiction(like, idk...comic books?)
HurricaneXavier - 12/22/2013, 12:07 PM
I feel like a lot of the people who post on this site need to actually read the articles before they post their comments.

Freaking out over a play, hilarious.
Tymminator - 12/22/2013, 12:26 PM
I actually kinda wanted to see a prequel play based off of the original Order of the Phoenix vs Voldermort.
theowl - 12/22/2013, 12:44 PM

You like this of aaalll things?
valeriesghost - 12/22/2013, 1:57 PM
i swear, people are idiots. The Harry Potter franchise, which has been good to excellent, and a cash cow, has absolutely nothing to do with DC and their property. Why in the hell would anyone complain about a stage play in England and blame it on the lack of a DCCU property? If anything a sure bet on a new Potter movie gives the studio even more money giving them the comfort to take more risks. BUT WE AREN'T EVEN TALKING ABOUT A MOVIE. [frick] some of you are stupid. Not all of you, but some of you obviously wore helmets and rode the short bus on your way to school.
GINGERV - 12/22/2013, 3:32 PM
oh marvellous just what we need more harry blinking potter
seantwakafilmyguy - 12/22/2013, 4:25 PM
Could be funny.
mgeoff88 - 12/22/2013, 4:29 PM
Why doesn't J.K. Rowling do a prequel movie like what they're doing with The Hobbit?

A big screen movie would make more money than a play. I know it would cost a lot more to do a movie, but it would make a huge profit.

The Harry Potter franchise is popular all over the world.
DrDoom - 12/22/2013, 4:53 PM
So.... no magic, then?
JediRob - 12/22/2013, 5:15 PM

This project had nothing to do Warner Bros.
DelTorite - 12/22/2013, 9:33 PM

Just kidding. The HP books are decent.
Mrwriter1701 - 12/23/2013, 12:28 AM
Can it be any better than "A very Potter musical"? That one was awesome.
It's on youtube if you don't know it.

leftcoastpunk - 12/23/2013, 11:04 AM
This is bullshit...they should be focusing on aqua man, martian man, flash, or shazam ballets instead. Now we may never get the justice league opera we all deserve...bullshit I say!
