Making Of The Barrel Sequence In THE HOBBIT: DESOLATION OF SMAUG

In Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug there's a seven-minute action sequence involving Bilbo and the dwarves escaping Thranduil’s realm in wine barrels. Hit the jump to see how they pulled it off.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug continues the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield, on an epic quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain and the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.

Having survived the beginning of their unexpected journey, the Company continues East, encountering along the way the skin-changer Beorn and a swarm of giant Spiders in the treacherous forest of Mirkwood. After escaping capture by the dangerous Wood-elves, the Dwarves journey to Lake-town, and finally to the Lonely Mountain itself, where they must face the greatest danger of all - a creature more terrifying than any other; one which will test not only the depth of their courage but the limits of their friendship and the wisdom of the journey itself - the Dragon Smaug.

Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf the Grey, with Martin Freeman in the central role of Bilbo Baggins, and Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield. The international ensemble cast is led by Benedict Cumberbatch, Evangeline Lilly, Lee Pace, Luke Evans, Ken Stott, James Nesbitt, and Orlando Bloom as Legolas. The film also stars (in alphabetical order) John Bell, Manu Bennett, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, John Callen, Ryan Gage, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, Stephen Hunter, William Kircher, Lawrence Makoare, Sylvester McCoy, Graham McTavish, Dean O'Gorman, Mikael Persbrandt, and Aidan Turner.

We don't discriminate against any one here.

Except for white people.
Greengo - 3/3/2014, 1:24 PM
If you're a white midget, you're [frick]ed.

Literally and figuratively.

So, ah.. "anal rapist" here tries searching for "midget food".. but gets porn instead. I'm glad people like this exist. If they weren't so dim, life wouldn't be half as funny. Or bearable.
Greengo - 3/3/2014, 1:41 PM
lmao yoss!

They're DEFINITELY [frick]ed!

I didn't care much for this part, but my 11 yr old laughed his ass off...meh.

VFX companies definately need more recognition for the work they do, as that was simply amazing

The Hobbit trading cards may be on the bottom shelf...but they are worth the search.

Only reason this wasn't my least favourite scene in DOS was that the Smaug chase scene was actually even more pointless and ridiculous. :(

That being said, under different circumstances I might have really liked the scene, because it wasn't at all bad. It just had no point being in The Hobbit.

@McGee: Damn, man! That picture makes me want some Skyline! No joke.

@Kyos: The Smaug chase scene really needed the Benny Hill soundtrack.

It's SMAUG not SMOG idiot!

Besides, I thought the sequence was awesome! Although, would've wished they did a bit less CG. Not mainly the water but the CG Legolas and Orcs… I get they did that but they shouldn't've had.
Water is incredibly difficult to make good using CG, glad they did shot some on location and made special water sets.

I think Beorn, the Spiders and Smaug are fantastic CG creations, Smaug being a technical marvel! They could've won the Oscar over Gravity if they didn't had to make over 1900 VFX shots for this in a year. IF the designs of Azog and Bolg were initially good, that would've saved them a lot of work. Not to forget if they came up with the idea for a trilogy from the get go! However, all a bit easy to say afterwards. But regarding the VFX, a lot of things would've looked a lot better. Mostly digi-doubles. I kinda fear for the BO5A with TABA…… Hope they used a ridiculous amount of extra's and maybe shot some outside and on large sets. Those massive armies HAVE to look convincing!

That Go Pro Scene Killed The Barrel Sequence For Me.
