MTV Officially Picks Up SHANNARA TV Series

MTV Officially Picks Up SHANNARA TV Series

News that a live-action Shannara television series was in the works at MTV first surfaced back in September 2012 but now the "Music Television" Network has given a full season commitment to the show.

MTV is looking to get into the Game of Thrones business. The Wrap reports thatthe network has made a full-season commitment to a live-action television show based on Terry Brooks' Shannara fantasy series. Back in December, it was reported that Iron Man director Jon Favreau would direct however, that appears to not be the case as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles helmer, Jonathan Liebesman will direct the first two episodes. Favreau is still working on the project as an executive producer so it's not out of the realm of possibility that he'll direct one of the other episodes. The first season has received a 10 episode commitment.

The series is a very traditional sword and sorcery, fantasy series - with an added twist that the novels are set in a post-apocalyptic, medieval setting of a far-flung future where the Earth has been radically altered due to Chemical Warfare. In this setting, magic replaces science as the catalyst of human progression (although scientific achievements and rediscoveries do emerge later on in the series). Now for the important question, who's going to play Garet Jax?

OVERVIEW: Living in peaceful Shady Vale, Shea Ohmsford knew little of the troubles that plagued the rest of the world. Then the giant, forbidding Allanon revaled that the supposedly dead Warlock Lord was plotting to destory the world. The sole weapon against this Power of Darkness was the Sword of Shannara, which could only be used by a true heir of Shannara--Shea being the last of the bloodline, upon whom all hope rested. Soon a Skull Bearer, dread minion of Evil, flew into the Vale, seeking to destroy Shea. To save the Vale, Shea fled, drawing the Skull Bearer after him....

Shannara is a high fantasy series from acclaimed author Terry Brooks, beginning with The Sword of Shannara in 1977.

CaptainAmerica31 - 7/11/2014, 11:01 PM
Well this show is DOA. We shall see. MTV tends to [frick] everything up. They [frick]ed up an entire generation of kids so......
TelaVizion - 7/11/2014, 11:04 PM
Teen Wolf is one of the best series on tv... MTV should do just fine with this series on it too.
pesmerga44 - 7/11/2014, 11:05 PM
@CaptainAmerica31

Ya seriously they had a show which made teenage girls get pregnant just to get onto that piece of shit show aka Teen Moms.
TheOverlord - 7/11/2014, 11:13 PM
Shannara was a cool read when I was in middle school. Could be a good match for MTV. Of course, I haven't watched that network in 20 years, so who the hell am I to talk. I'm almost as old as Gusto!
CaptainAmerica31 - 7/11/2014, 11:16 PM
I'm sorry if you think Teen Wolf is one of the best TV series on TV than you probably don't know much about TV or shows in particular. If you think Teen Wolf is one of the best series on TV than you probably are a hormone raged teenager, also have you seen GoT, Fargo, true detective, Hannibal, mad men, and the walking dead? Saying teen wolf is one of the best series on TV is like saying Twilight is one of the best Film series in cinema history. I can't live on this planet anymore
BlindJustice - 7/11/2014, 11:28 PM
@CaptainAmerica31 - Amen. I've checked out Teen Wolf and I can honestly tell you that I felt my IQ drop as the episode was playing. I had to flip over and watch a WWII documentary just to balance it out. Sheesh.

Although I probably could've watched just about anything to get that weak acting and writing out of my head! >_<
Danbojohnj - 7/11/2014, 11:48 PM
Cool,now Wheel of Time dammit!
MarkJulian - 7/11/2014, 11:55 PM

The character in the teaser image and the banner remind me of someone...

I guess they used Billy Idol's likeness for the character. ;P
Shroombeast - 7/11/2014, 11:58 PM
MTV? is this April [frick]in' Fools Day? Shit.
Danbojohnj - 7/11/2014, 11:59 PM
May you find water and shade MarkJulian.

A live-action GARGOYLES film or show would be nice. I miss The MAXX on MTV.
TheBatmanRules - 7/12/2014, 12:32 AM
Every single comic is being made into a TV show or movie.... when the [frick] is a Matt Wagner's Grendel TV show going to happen? WHEN IS IT HAPPENING I SAY?!
loki668 - 7/12/2014, 12:47 AM
Well, apparently MTV doesn't know shit from Shannara!

Heh. HAD to be done.
Namor - 7/12/2014, 1:02 AM
Did someone say Teen Wolf is one of the best TV shown on right now??lol Maybe if your between the ages of 13-18 it is.lol Otherwise, that show is unwatchable. The fights are almost downright comical.
mgeoff88 - 7/12/2014, 1:02 AM
@loki Lol! When I feel like listening to some classic rock, I put on "My Shannara."

"Teen Wolf is one of the best series on tv... MTV should do just fine with this series on it too."

Please replay the Guardians of the Galaxy trailer scene of Rocket laughing at Star Lord's "12% of a plan" line, and realize I'm doing the same. And I assure you, it's a real laugh.

Here's a picture to help you visualize, since I'm quite sure anyone who classifies Teen Wolf as "one of the best series on TV" is obviously lacking intelligence and imagination:

In the midnight hour, Shannara wants mo, mo, mo!
TheBrotherhood - 7/12/2014, 3:08 AM
Kinda sad, The Shannara series deserves a LOTR treatment.
BmanHall - 7/12/2014, 3:46 AM
I loved reading the Shannara books as a kid. They were right up there with Lord of the Rings for me. I would rather see Peter Jackson make movies out of them. MTV will undoubtedly [frick] this up.
BmanHall - 7/12/2014, 4:00 AM
Both the Shannara series and the Drizzt series deserve to have movies IMO.
loki668 - 7/12/2014, 4:09 AM
@BmanHall

I would LOVE to see someone try and take on the Drizzt series!
FordEl - 7/12/2014, 5:55 AM
@DIrishB

@Namor

@BlindJustice

If you watch Season 3 and Season 4 it really improved and is actually pretty good. Espcially the last few episodes of 3B. Dylan O'Brien is the best actor on the show and his whole character arch that shows that is 3B. Its not one of the best shows but it is good. Season 1 and 2 were fine but they still finding their way.
venkman9993592 - 7/12/2014, 7:14 AM
sounds like adventure time
LensmanMatt92 - 7/12/2014, 8:09 AM
Remember when MTV used to play music videos? Those where good times.
LensmanMatt92 - 7/12/2014, 8:10 AM
@loki668 I love the Forgotten Realms books and videogames.
MrFridayNights - 7/12/2014, 8:16 AM
&CaptainAmerica31 The Walking Dead is also overrated

I'm 16 years old and MTV is a piece of shit that features piece of shit singers like Rihanna,Justin Bieber,Ke$ha,Lady Gaga,Chris Brown and many more also feature retarded shows like Teen Wolf.
Ranger14 - 7/12/2014, 9:09 AM
Yes! I loved the Shannara series! Ugh...MTV? I will try to remain skeptically optimistic.
Luther - 7/12/2014, 9:34 AM
CaptainAmerica31 speaking truth, yet again.
RetroFit - 7/12/2014, 10:23 AM
"far-flung future where the Earth has been radically altered due to Chemical Warfare"

HUH?? I read the first 3 or 4 books and I don't remember that at all. AT ALL!
CaptainAmerica31 - 7/12/2014, 10:26 AM
Teen wolf was good for the first two seasons. Why? Cause it was actually about teen wolfs and it made sense. This new shit they're showing is so left field, random Asian chick and other random good looking high school kids who do not look their age
DarkSuperman - 7/12/2014, 12:38 PM
@CaptainAmerica31

I agree. that last season with the kitsune and all that weird trippy crap was boring and made no sense whatsoever. they need to get back to the wolf on wolf action...stop all this were-coyote, were-jaguar, nonsense.
DatGuy - 7/12/2014, 1:11 PM
@LensmanMatt92 MTV still plays music videos; at night, but most of them are shit artist, so it doesn't really matter.
Dandy - 7/12/2014, 2:23 PM
Shannara is a lot harder than Game of Thrones to adapt to TV. This because Shannara is far more action oriented and that means they need way more special effects.

My prediction?

This is going to look as cheep and crappy as the Wizard's First Rule adaption "Legend of the Seeker".
shamo - 7/12/2014, 3:54 PM
The man likes Teen Wolf, who cares? Get off the poor guy, art is subjective anyways. Just because some of you may not like the show doesn't it mean it's objectively bad.

Now, with that said, I don't like it either & pretty much share the same opinion as ya'll based soley on the fact that it's Teen wolf & comes on mtv, but an opinion is just an opinion at the end of the day. No need to bash someone because their opinion varies from your own.
CaptainAmerica31 - 7/12/2014, 3:59 PM
@shamo no one is shaming him because HE likes it. People are shaming him because when he said it was one of the best series on TV he said it as if it were a fact. If he thinks so then fine, to each his own but seriously? Come on it's the golden age of TV there are so many great shows, Teen wolf making that list? Hell to the [frick]ing no
THEBAT2016 - 7/12/2014, 5:41 PM
DUDE HANDS DOWN [frick] THE FALSE TEEN WOLF MTV BULLSHIT. NO ONE CARES ABOUT TEEN WOLF SO SHUT THE [frick] UP.
