I liked TDKR, Chronicle, Skyfall was great and the Hobbit was solid but nothing touched Avengers. To me its not only the best comic book superhero movie yet-its also one of the best movies I have ever seen. The Avengers is a movie that I thought may not even happen. Whedon did an outstanding job all the way around. Avengers is the type of entertainment that I go to the movies for but rarely get such a high level of entertainment in all aspects-pacing, action that is not too frenetic or too close up, well developed characters, witty spot on humor that is even better than some of the other comedy films that came out this year, characters that you can emotionally invest in and not have that investment go to waste and just plain fun. Whedon took my favorite iconic heroes that I have loved since I was kid and made a masterpiece IMO.
beane2099 - 12/19/2012, 7:45 AM
Trank and Travis did the most with the least. That puts them higher in the rankings in my book.
PanicSwitch - 12/19/2012, 7:46 AM
It is all about degree of difficulty and Whedon delivered a top notch film with the highest degree of difficulty (bringing together multiple movie franchises in a way that was seemless and made sense). That this was the best movie is debateable, some will love others on this list more than the Avengers, but Whedon's job was the hardest.
erth2drew - 12/19/2012, 7:53 AM
You guys dont know good cinema if hit you in the dick with mjolnir....skyfall and prometheous were the best films of the year by a LONGSHOT!!!
Nomis1800 - 12/19/2012, 8:04 AM
Christ Nolan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DiLusso - 12/19/2012, 8:05 AM
just because whedon wrote the script and directed at the same time he wins
DrRockso - 12/19/2012, 8:06 AM
He's a Brit? I thought he was just "effete"
scruffylookingnerfherder - 12/19/2012, 8:22 AM
TheOneWhoKnocks - 12/19/2012, 8:26 AM
I liked TDKR more than Avengers ...but Whedon deserves it this year. What has he been doing all these years ?? he's already 50 years old! but very few movies ...he wrote some good stuff though (buffy, serenity, toy story,FIREFLY!)
avengersleagueofjusticeforamerica - 12/19/2012, 8:32 AM
Well I guess to get best director the film should be good right? Well that rules out Nolan. If you don't like it suck the freckles off my taint...
avengersleagueofjusticeforamerica - 12/19/2012, 8:33 AM
At scruffylookingnerfherder

Simplistic tool Nolan nuthuggers
jasonicus - 12/19/2012, 8:38 AM
Whedon by far. Nolan's film was a mess. Fanboys just can't let go of the bias.
Saintsinnister - 12/19/2012, 8:39 AM
Why is it every "comic book" movie poll or article have two or three movies that have nothing to do with comics? They should say sci-fi or action, not comic book movie. BTW Avengers it the essential comic book movie.
Mucklefluga - 12/19/2012, 8:49 AM
Guys it's not best movie it's best Director. So don't just vote TDKR or Avengers because you like that movie the most.
KaneVonDoom - 12/19/2012, 8:59 AM
Better CBM: Avengers, Better cinema: TDKR... I love TDKR as a powerful movie but I may watch it again once, maybe twice. Avengers, I'll watch over and over again. For that, I vote Joss.
griff - 12/19/2012, 8:59 AM
I think we all know who will win this, whether he deserves it or not.
manofmidgard - 12/19/2012, 9:12 AM
i don't really consider the hobbit or prometheus comic book movies, although i see how they can technically be considered as such. if i did, i'd give peter jackson first, then ridley scott second, with whedon a distant third. as it is, i give whedon an easy win here. avengers was a fun, exciting movie. i barely consider nolan's movies comic book movies, considering how he tried to take all the comic book (fun & fantasy) elements out of batman. but, then again, since he failed so miserably to achieve the ultra-realistic qualities he wanted, i guess i will acknowledge it as a comic book movie after all, albeit a very poor one.
Patient2670 - 12/19/2012, 9:14 AM
I really enjoyed all the movies above. I think all the directors did commendable jobs with the resources they had available to them. To be honest, I think Nolan, Whedon and Mendes had most of the heavy lifting done for them before they even started the respective projects (Mendes has even said this himself). But they had all the money and toys in the world to play with. They had built in audiences and full studio support. Again, this is in no way belittling or detracting from the fantastic movies they made. Skyfall, The Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers were all Exceptional pieces of work. But I think Pete Travis deserves the vote, considering everything he had working against him. Budget constraints, the dogma of an earlier film incarnation of the character, etc. It's truly disappointing that people didn't turn out to support this great movie.
Maximus101 - 12/19/2012, 9:28 AM
Never would have guessed it was going to be between these two
SageMode - 12/19/2012, 9:32 AM
The Nolanites must be in timeout at school today.
TheOneAboveAll - 12/19/2012, 9:34 AM
I voted Josh... after having watched chronicle I was undoubted impressed with such a simple story based on AKIRA more than I was impressed with Avengers.
NightmareB4 - 12/19/2012, 9:57 AM

Don't throw around terms like Nolanites and Marvel trolls or whatever, and don't complain about 'multiple voters.' This is, and always has been, about statistics.

Josh Trank (Chronicle)
Sir Ridley Scott (Prometheus)
Sam Mendes (Skyfall)
Peter Jackson (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey)

The above were NEVER going to win, because this site is called COMICBOOKmovie. Even though we all love other genres it always comes back to comics for us on this site.

Pete Travis (DREDD)

^ Even though DREDD was a great 'reboot' to the franchise it also wasn't going to win since Judge Dredd is from a less known comic company.

Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man)

^ Spiderman received a mixed response from the comicbook world. While some people herald it as a bold new direction for Spiderman others reminisce about the Sam Raimi trilogy (usually omitting #3)

Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight Rises)

^ Is the only DC film on the list which is why it will bring about *MOST* of the DC fans to vote for it. While there are some who weren't as fond, there are still many who loves the film and it's plethora of strong performances.

A finally, Joss Whedon (Marvel's The Avengers)

Joss Whedon's 'love letter' to the comic film genre. It has a multitude of Marvel heroes and to be quite frank, as die hard as DC fans are, Marvel fans just have the numbers. They have more heroes stuffed into one film which will bring in a wider range of fans (though how can you NOT like Batman, c'mon!)

In case you're wondering, I did vote for Joss Whedon. I have admiration for all of his work, outside of Dollhouse, and I loved his father's contributions to the sitcoms of the 70s and 80s. I for one loved all of the CBMs that came out this year...maybe not Ghost Rider ;-) Try not to cry 'scandal' and make out your film or hero to be a victim of unfair circumstance if they lose. Batman, Iron Man, Thor, Cap, Hawkeye, and the rest teach us to be better, not to be petty.

If you made it this far, I appreciate your commitment. I love comics, I love this site, and I love our community!
KoolBeans - 12/19/2012, 10:11 AM
I liked Dredd so much I voted for Pete Travis at least 30 times. Maybe I'll help get him to 200 votes by the end of this. We'll see.
SageMode - 12/19/2012, 10:22 AM

The evidence is now upon us.
jj72 - 12/19/2012, 10:27 AM
It was a toss up between Nolan and Whedon. However when it came down to it, Whedon got the vote. He did something a majority of people thought would fail. Whedon proved all the nay sayers wrong. Personally, I prefered the Dark Knight over The Dark Knight Rises. That would have won my vote for Nolan. The second installment of the Batman Trilogy was the best IMO.
Spidey91 - 12/19/2012, 10:28 AM
I'm shocked...wait,no,I'm not.
oh well, let them have another victory, otherwise they probably would commit suicide :P
spidersponge - 12/19/2012, 10:40 AM
Well seeing the sudden exponential boost in Nolan votes I think it's safe to say the Nolanites have been let out of school.
spidersponge - 12/19/2012, 10:45 AM
It's official I now have no doubt in my mind the Nolanites vote multiple times! Lol
Ranger14 - 12/19/2012, 10:47 AM
lol..yeah...there was a consistent fairly solid lead for Whedon for quite some time. The multiple voting frenzy of Nolan fans finally kicked usual.
TheOneWhoKnocks - 12/19/2012, 10:49 AM
@Intruder, maybe marvelites r voting for Nolan to make people believe that Nolanites r multiple voting :conspiracykeanu:
gleetana - 12/19/2012, 11:08 AM
well.. it didn't take long for another poll to be hacked by the nolanite cult.
spidersponge - 12/19/2012, 11:11 AM
I can't believe it! Whedon is even loosing to Mendes! Skyfall wasn't even a frigg'n CBM for crying out loud! Lol
spidersponge - 12/19/2012, 11:20 AM
Seriously is it even possible for poll results to shoot up like that without multi-voting?
spidersponge - 12/19/2012, 11:22 AM
Only a matter of time before Travis surpasses Whedon too! Lol
spidersponge - 12/19/2012, 11:29 AM
What were the results an hour ago? Whedon 900 something, and Nolan in the mid 300's?
didich - 12/19/2012, 11:30 AM

Pretty much.

I mean, Nolan fans are either multi-voting or have called a legion of friends because they were losing.
BlackfuryRises - 12/19/2012, 11:47 AM
Chris Nolan? The f are you guys thinking? Dredd has this year's best cinematography regarding the camera angles, use of depth, 3D (which was filed with REAL 3D cameras), tone and style. Anyone who votes for anone besides Pete Travis is just wrong. He did a helluva lot more with a very small action budget.
GodzillaKart - 12/19/2012, 12:18 PM
Why are Mendes and Scott on this list?
