Conceptual illustrator, Christian Pearce ("Elysium"), has updated his website with unused designs for Smaug the dragon from Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug. Check it out!

Concept Art by Christian Pearce
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug continues the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield, on an epic quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain and the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor. Having survived the beginning of their unexpected journey, the Company continues East, encountering along the way the skin-changer Beorn and a swarm of giant Spiders in the treacherous forest of Mirkwood. After escaping capture by the dangerous Wood-elves, the Dwarves journey to Lake-town, and finally to the Lonely Mountain itself, where they must face the greatest danger of all - a creature more terrifying than any other; one which will test not only the depth of their courage but the limits of their friendship and the wisdom of the journey itself - the Dragon Smaug. Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf the Grey, with Martin Freeman in the central role of Bilbo Baggins, and Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield. The international ensemble cast is led by Benedict Cumberbatch, Evangeline Lilly, Lee Pace, Luke Evans, Ken Stott, James Nesbitt, and Orlando Bloom as Legolas. The film also stars (in alphabetical order) John Bell, Manu Bennett, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, John Callen, Ryan Gage, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, Stephen Hunter, William Kircher, Lawrence Makoare, Sylvester McCoy, Graham McTavish, Dean O'Gorman, Mikael Persbrandt, and Aidan Turner.

Umm yeah Smaug was perfect. Glad these weren't the ones to be honest.
OnePunchBaldy - 4/26/2014, 7:11 PM
That's one Batch of Cumber.
bazinga85 - 4/26/2014, 7:12 PM
That first one's cool, but not for a Hobbit movie
DrDoom - 4/26/2014, 7:13 PM
Definitely glad they went with the design they did. Smaug is the best dragon in movie history.

Awesome movie.
superbatspiderman - 4/26/2014, 7:13 PM
The one with the two mouths looks like Slyfer the Sky Dargon from YuGiOh.

I though design for Smaug looked perfect. He looked menacing and scary. Benedict's voice didn't hurt either.
DoubleDion - 4/26/2014, 7:18 PM
Glad Bryan Singer didn't direct this... he would have raped all those poor hobbits.
maninfinesuit - 4/26/2014, 7:19 PM
Should have rejected the director.

MercwithMouth - 4/26/2014, 7:20 PM
Still not sure if I should bother watching this movie. First one was terrible.
maninfinesuit - 4/26/2014, 7:22 PM
@MrMartinMarvel 'Let's see how snake-like I can be.'

LeeroyJenkins - 4/26/2014, 7:24 PM
Is that that thing from avatar?
DefcoN - 4/26/2014, 7:27 PM
That's the 98's Godzilla.
BoomTubeB - 4/26/2014, 7:32 PM
What about the Puff design?
Melvinwerewolf - 4/26/2014, 7:40 PM

Did anyone else think of this with the one with the two mouths?
Skintastic - 4/26/2014, 7:42 PM
They should just copy the Dragonslayer design, it set the bar
Greengo - 4/26/2014, 7:42 PM
What the ended up with is perfect.
superbatspiderman - 4/26/2014, 7:58 PM
@Melvinwerewolf - That is what I said. lol
GeneralZod1138 - 4/26/2014, 8:02 PM
Smaug was the best part of the second movie. I thought his design was perfect.
LadyGusto - 4/26/2014, 8:05 PM

LuBeTHiGhWalK3R - 4/26/2014, 8:12 PM
@Dio- I thought the same thing when I saw it...

"Out of the way, peck!"
batz11 - 4/26/2014, 8:15 PM
Smaug looked awesome...
MementoMori - 4/26/2014, 8:29 PM
One of the rarer cases of the movie design being loads better than the concept art. Smaug the dragon will go down in history as one of the most brilliant conceptions of a dragon ever put on film I think. Whether he's talking or not.
ThrotTheUnclean - 4/26/2014, 8:31 PM
They made the right decisions.
case - 4/26/2014, 8:46 PM
Merc - do it man. You'll probably have the same problems as you did with the first one, but there's more than enough awesome stuff to make up for it. By now you kinda know what you're gonna get with these movies.

Anyways, you can always just spark one up and sit back for the ride...
batz11 - 4/26/2014, 8:52 PM
I still think Draco was well done for the day...

Of course, dog-dragon ;)
MightyZeus - 4/26/2014, 9:14 PM
Loved the final design of Smaug. It is glorious.

Vital - 4/26/2014, 9:14 PM
I think it's funny how you guys say the one in the movie is the best (best ever no less). It's a generic looking dragon (no offense). It looks the same as every dragon I have ever seen lol.
BlindJustice - 4/26/2014, 9:41 PM
@Vital - No offense, but you haven't seen too many dragons then I'm guessing. Smaug is much more serpent-like than other dragons I have seen in movies and TV shows. He is very much like the classic D&D red dragon, but with some hints of the classic Chinese dragon design tossed in.

It was a good design... I'm not sure what some people were looking for. Most people always feel the need to compare everything to something else that came before it anyway. But hey, that's only human nature.

BlindJustice - 4/26/2014, 9:45 PM
Funny though, since most descriptions of dragons in modern day fantasy games and movies came from a certain novel entitled...

The Hobbit.
loki668 - 4/26/2014, 10:27 PM
Hmmmm........not bad.

On another note, I accepted LadyGusto's friend request and now my computer has syphilis. Coincidence?
TheSoulEater - 4/26/2014, 10:32 PM
I laughed out loud at the first one
storyteller - 4/26/2014, 10:39 PM
Once again folks, concept artists will pump out hundreds of drawings. It's never just the one concept that's perfect. They go extreme just so they know to reign it all in.
Facade - 4/26/2014, 11:02 PM
Smaug was magnificent.
ScionStorm - 4/26/2014, 11:03 PM
My mind would have melted if I saw Smaug open up a second mouth.
Danbojohnj - 4/26/2014, 11:25 PM
Not enough gold and gems on his belly and his snout was too short.

He looked 'solid' and real though, best skin textures I think I've ever seen on a CGI creation.
loki668 - 4/26/2014, 11:58 PM
AnthonyLantern - 4/27/2014, 1:14 AM
I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought of Slyther the Sky Dragon
Highflyer - 4/27/2014, 1:26 AM
@TankD The lizard from TAS resembled his original design from the comics. It isn't about being lazy.
Starfox - 4/27/2014, 2:12 AM
1st ones Cool.
Klone - 4/27/2014, 2:59 AM

Well Smaug looked incredible visually and you appreciate the amount of effort WETA went into when watching the videos about how they created him and Cumberbatch was a perfect voice, so I'd say it's worth it only for seeing Smaug.
