Concept Art by Paul Tobin
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug continues the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield, on an epic quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain and the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor. Having survived the beginning of their unexpected journey, the Company continues East, encountering along the way the skin-changer Beorn and a swarm of giant Spiders in the treacherous forest of Mirkwood. After escaping capture by the dangerous Wood-elves, the Dwarves journey to Lake-town, and finally to the Lonely Mountain itself, where they must face the greatest danger of all - a creature more terrifying than any other; one which will test not only the depth of their courage but the limits of their friendship and the wisdom of the journey itself - the Dragon Smaug. Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf the Grey, with Martin Freeman in the central role of Bilbo Baggins, and Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield. The international ensemble cast is led by Benedict Cumberbatch, Evangeline Lilly, Lee Pace, Luke Evans, Ken Stott, James Nesbitt, and Orlando Bloom as Legolas. The film also stars (in alphabetical order) John Bell, Manu Bennett, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, John Callen, Ryan Gage, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, Stephen Hunter, William Kircher, Lawrence Makoare, Sylvester McCoy, Graham McTavish, Dean O'Gorman, Mikael Persbrandt, and Aidan Turner.

Glad they went with the design they did. As flawed as the movie was, Smaug's design was one of the best designs of the character I have seen.

Definitely thinking that the designs they used were the best ones.

Lol! @ Pasto and Alexander

Wait, this isn't a Godzilla thread? Ah crap.

Tauriel was a [email protected] character, but she was really let down by that stupid love triangle they shoehorned into the movie.

I like Bilbo's designs.

Pretty awesome alternate dragon designs, but they definitely got the design of Smaug's face right in the movie. He looked animalistic, but intelligent enough to talk naturally and convincingly. Yeah...that's all the compliments I can spare for these movies today haha
FastFlames - 5/3/2014, 1:47 PM
Smaug, almost the last penis-headed dragon of the land.

I'd have been pissed if they'd used most of those Smaug faces. It was bad enough they [frick]ed up the trolls and the goblin king.

Fortunately, Smaug in that movie was one hell of a magnificent panty-dropper.

4th design down, Smaug the Kaiju.

Where's the life bar? :P

Anyways, Smaug did look amazing. Weta did outdo themselves.

I have to say much as I liked movie Smaug, I do prefer some of the thinner snouted looks shown here. Bit closer to Tolkien's original illustrations, but I suppose they had to factor in having the mouth be able to speak and move without looking weird, not unlike Lizard.

SMAUG was [frick]ing awesome!!!!

The problem with Beorn wasn't the bear form...
FastFlames - 5/3/2014, 6:07 PM
A lot of those Smaug designs look like Jurassic Park concept art, which is a good thing.
TheSoulEater - 5/3/2014, 6:53 PM
Dat bear....
MementoMori - 5/3/2014, 9:00 PM
Smaug is one of the best dragon designs ever put on film.
MightyZeus - 5/3/2014, 9:27 PM
Some of the concept art looks good.

Smaug is basically the biggest dragon i've ever in a film. Smaug was the highlight of The Hobbit Part 2.
loki668 - 5/3/2014, 10:26 PM
The problem with Beorn was that his human form looked like Kevin Costner had covered himself in honey and rolled around on a barber-shop floor.

I like the Beorn designs. Hope they show him like that in 5 Armies.
