(UPDATE) G.I. JOE RETALIATION: ReShoots Confirmed, Rumors Abound That Paramount Is Seeking Joseph Gordon-Levitt To Return As Cobra Commander

(UPDATE) G.I. JOE RETALIATION: ReShoots Confirmed, Rumors Abound That Paramount Is Seeking Joseph Gordon-Levitt To Return As Cobra Commander

The devastating news yesterday baffled many G.I. Joe faithful but hopefully this latest update can ease some of the pain. It looks as if the 3D won't simply be a post conversion.

GI Joe bumped to 2013

There's a lot of speculation out there right now as to why G.I.Joe: Retaliation was pushed back nearly a year. While Paramount execs are touting the financial boost of 3D, some film critics are insinuating that the move may have ulterior motives. Regardless, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has confirmed that they will actually be shooting new scenes for 3D rather than opting for a simple post film, 3D conversion. Also, there are rumors that Paramount is using the additional time to actively pursue Joseph Gordon-Levitt to return as Cobra Commander. With The Dark Knight Rises and Looper set to release later this year, JGL's profile will surely be front and center to the movie-going populace.

If JGL does return, let's hope it's not as this travesty.

Update: Jon M. Chu on the initial decision to not shoot in 3D. Note, this interview was conducted back in March at the 2012 South by Southwest Film Festival. [Per The Hollywood Reporter]

THR: How was it decided not to shoot the film in 3D?

Jon M. Chu: There was a point where we were talking about it when I first came. It seemed like a natural thing, but I told them, “I know 3D. This is what we need. If we’re going to do 3D, we’re going to do it right.” It had a certain price tag to it, and I was like, if you guys are down I'm down, but I do need more time to do it right. And they were about to do it but they cut it just a little bit short, and [I said,] “if you guys are going to cut it short there is no point. Let’s make a movie -- let’s go for it and we’ll go all out. And we shot on film, super-35, and I thought this may be one of the last times I get to shoot on film, and it was actually kind of freeing. I mean, I love 3D and I think there is a lot you can do with it, but there is something to be said about just not waiting for anything. You’re just going. We shot so much film. I mean I think we shot 1.2 million feet of film.

Running Time: Unknown
Release Date: 29 March 2013 (USA)
MPAA Rating: Unknown
Starring:Dwayne Johnson, D.J. Cotrona, Adrianne Palicki, Ray Stevenson, Channing Tatum, RZA, Byung-hun Lee, Elodie Yung, Bruce Willis, Ray Park and Arnold Vosloo
Directed by: Jon M. Chu
Written by: Rhett Reese (screenplay), Paul Wernick (screenplay)

G.I. Joe: Retaliation (also known as G.I. Joe 2 or G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation) is an upcoming 2012 action film directed by Jon M. Chu, based on Hasbro's G.I. Joe toy, comic and media franchises. It is a sequel to 2009's G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. It is set for a March 29, 2013 release in North America. The film was written by Zombieland writers, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. G.I. Joe: Retaliation features an ensemble cast, starring WWE Superstar Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis, with Channing Tatum, Arnold Vosloo, Ray Park, Jonathan Pryce and Lee Byung-hun reprising their roles from the first film.

"Devastated?" Who's devastated by the delay? I'm a bit disappointed because it looked like fun and my kids were looking forward to it. Looks better than the first one by a long shot. No Oscar winner, that's for sure, but entertaining. This could actually shoot them in the foot more than it helps them. Oh well.
Macksimus - 5/24/2012, 7:17 AM
Liars! They saw how the Avengers sunk Battleship, and they don't want none of that. There are alot of high-profile movies being released this summer that could ruin Retaliation's chances of making a decent buck.
MarkJulian - 5/24/2012, 7:17 AM
I know a lot of GI Joe fans that were very upset.
WolvieCBM - 5/24/2012, 7:17 AM
What's the source for the JGL rumor?
LAXtremest - 5/24/2012, 7:19 AM
All this has domes is guarantee the only money they're getting out of me is a buck 25 from Red Box.
xXkryptoniteXx - 5/24/2012, 7:20 AM
Lol does this mean they well also fix up the cgi?
Kovacs - 5/24/2012, 7:20 AM
looked like and enjoyable movie
HavocPrime - 5/24/2012, 7:21 AM
Called it lol sucks for the guy who took over Gordon, but also how much are they going to reshoot?
AlexDeLarge87 - 5/24/2012, 7:25 AM
Should have been rebooted anyway.
Only good things: The style, Ninjas (Snake, Storm etc.), Cobra Commander, Firefly.
Bad things: Should have been expanded more. Needs alot more characters and the destructive worldwide war between Joes and Cobras.
AlexDeLarge87 - 5/24/2012, 7:27 AM
I wanna see lots of destroyed cities.
figuresmaniac - 5/24/2012, 7:27 AM
Not a The avengers/ Tdkr level but I was pretty excited for this movie.
Dedpool - 5/24/2012, 7:29 AM
Well Going against IM3 and Thor2 is still better than going against Avengers, TDKR, and Amazing Spiderman. I'm hoping JGL returns and we'll see him become the badass Cobra Commander we'ves seen int he trailers.
Wildaniel - 5/24/2012, 7:29 AM
It needs...

Scarlet Baroness Destro!

Scarlet Baroness Destro!

Scarlet Baroness Destro!

Scarlet Baroness Destro!

Scarlet Baroness Destro!

Then I dont mind waiting until next year.

I always hated 3d, now I just cant stand it, lol.
AlexDeLarge87 - 5/24/2012, 7:29 AM
Oh and for gods sake dont kill Duke. Replace Tatum but dont [frick]ing kill Duke.
Darkknight23 - 5/24/2012, 7:30 AM
@ Macksimus I agree 100%
SuperFrost - 5/24/2012, 7:31 AM
I WAS PISSED WHEN I SAW THE FIRST FILM....sorry I wasn't yelling, i just left my Caps on ...lol
prettynuclear2 - 5/24/2012, 7:32 AM
They're just delaying their flop, not averting it.
SuperSomething616 - 5/24/2012, 7:33 AM
So when is it delayed till?
RorMachine - 5/24/2012, 7:33 AM
No reports of Paramount wanting JGL back, I saw one tweet from a fan speculating about it!
Greengo - 5/24/2012, 7:34 AM
[frick] THIS SHIT [frick] [frick] [frick] [frick] [frick] [frick] IT
HavocPrime - 5/24/2012, 7:34 AM
@ SuperSomething616 - Till March 2013
Tevii - 5/24/2012, 7:37 AM
Until now I didnt know if this movie was going to suck.
Reshoots, postpone for 3d (since Avengers was such a success), try and get Joseph Gordon-Levitt (since TDKR will be a hit)
All these money grabs, say this movie cant stand on its own
Wildaniel - 5/24/2012, 7:38 AM

March of next year, yeah it sucks, it was supposed to come out in a month.
SuperSomething616 - 5/24/2012, 7:41 AM
@ Wildaniel - WHAT THE FCUK!!! Thanks for the heads up...this sucks massive hairy monkey testicles!!!

EastcoastAvenger - 5/24/2012, 7:41 AM
Agreed Wildaniel. A G.i. Joe flick without Destro is lame-o. Scarlet and Baroness ought to be in it as well. Major Bludd should be have a pretty prominent place within Cobra as well.
marvel72 - 5/24/2012, 7:41 AM
i thought cobra commander looked good in this movie.
jessepostal - 5/24/2012, 7:44 AM
Why would u want Jgl back? Besides a money draw. Are they changing the story again. I like the first one but his acting in it was terrible, worse than the guy who played breaker
AlexRival - 5/24/2012, 7:45 AM
If they get the actors from the first, ESPECIALLY JGL, then I'm saying its all worth it.
Mego - 5/24/2012, 7:50 AM
If they pushed it back because it sucked then good for them. Fix it. Id rather spend another 10 million than let let it all sink. Imagine if Lucas had the balls to make big changes and delay Phantom Menace, when he saw it and said "Nothing we can do about it now."
I hope other studios follow suit here.
When they see a Green Lantern, fix the bastard, it can be done. Theyd spend 5-10 million more but lose less.
If you know the ship will sink, dont try to float it.
MarkJulian - 5/24/2012, 7:53 AM
Meant rumors not reports. And JGL apparently already turned them down.
TucsonRican - 5/24/2012, 7:56 AM
If you think his performance was all because of him, wow, you are sourly mistaken.

Stephen Sommers is one of the worst directors in Hollywood. Just truly awful. Anything you saw in that film, was what Sommers wanted.

No actor can direct themselves. Your seeing what Sommers told him to do, which was act awfully.

TucsonRican - 5/24/2012, 7:59 AM
And everyone that is saying that "Re-Shoots means the film sucks" Really?

Like a couple of scenes will completly change the tone and plot of a movie that is 75 to 85 percent in the can?

Avengers had re-shoots. EVERY major film does. Who doesn't know that??
jessepostal - 5/24/2012, 8:09 AM
@tucson, calm down kid not everyone has every second of the day to learn and KNOW EVERYTHING IN THE WORLD!!! MMMMMWWWAAAHHHAAAH:) easy buddy
fadersdream - 5/24/2012, 8:12 AM
How many times will this movie be downloaded by the time it's released?
jessepostal - 5/24/2012, 8:14 AM
And this is a diff kind of reshoot this is a reshoot for 3d angels, and Jgl was still the actor wasn't he? Don't stick up for him when you weren't there making the movie. He sucked period :)
TucsonRican - 5/24/2012, 8:45 AM

Huh? What the hell are you talking about? The fact that you insinuated that I was crying about this seems to me that you are just itching to piss someone off. Why? Whats the point?

And sorry if you come to movie website and are not familiar on how movies are made.

TonyChu - 5/24/2012, 8:57 AM
Paramount literally just [frick]ed themeselves with the push back. You gave up a summer release date where you can make serious bank for a March releases date. And for what literally just a few million.
SkullFace616 - 5/24/2012, 9:08 AM
I'm upset. I'd like an awesome GI JOE movie and if extra time means it could be really good, cool... but y'know, I wanna see it now, the publicity etc, I'm itchin'... I wanna see this now. :o(
sexfoodcomics - 5/24/2012, 9:16 AM
They can't "shoot new scenes to enhance 3D". They are converting the movie and doing reshoots, simple as that.
