Green Lantern Makes $4.7M During Its First Three Days Of Release on DVD

It was previously reported that Green Lantern took the #2 spot on Blu-Ray sales chart during its first three days of release, and now it seems that the film was also second on DVD sales chart, making $4.7 million...

Martin Campbell-directed comic book adaptation Green Lantern starring Ryan Reynolds was not a huge box office hit in theatres, making $219 million, with a reported budget of $200M. On October 14, film was released on DVD and Blu-Ray and took the #2 spot on Blu-Ray chart, behind Walt Disney Studios' The Lion King. Now, according to The Numbers, Green Lantern made $4.7 million on DVD, during its three days of release, from Oct. 14 to Oct. 16.

There you go...Remember, this is just for the DVD. The only film we can compare Green Lantern is X-Men: First Class, because both had 3 days until the official DVD numbers were online. X-Men: First Class made around $9M last month. Blu-Ray numbers should be revealed soon and usually the numbers are bigger. So, stay tuned...

BackwardGalaxy - 10/25/2011, 12:55 PM
Cue the transparent GL bashing.
Shaman - 10/25/2011, 12:56 PM
Horrible bosses AND the Lion King's re-release beat it. Whew.
NOLANITE - 10/25/2011, 12:58 PM
I want proof LordFaggot. no way did thor the god of hammers make that much in 6 days.
Shaman - 10/25/2011, 12:58 PM
Zookeeper even beat GL's numbers...
PaulRom - 10/25/2011, 12:58 PM
Of course Horrible Bosses beat it, it has Jen Aniston and it got good reviews (70% on the Tomatometer, if I'm not mistaken).

PaulRom - 10/25/2011, 12:59 PM
And I'm not surprised Lion King beat it either, just look at the box office numbers for the 3D re-release.
HeroSupreme - 10/25/2011, 12:59 PM
Thats disappointing. Maybe the Blu Ray numbers will be really good given the appeal of the extended cut but the DVD sales were significantly lower than X-Men's Friday release of 6.3 mil. :(
WolvieCBM - 10/25/2011, 1:02 PM
@PaulRom: That image with AWFUL CG costume is not really helping, you know. Might wanna find another one.)
marvel72 - 10/25/2011, 1:03 PM
@ lordbaphomet

green lantern $219,851,172 in 15 weeks

thor $448,512,824 in 16 weeks

the ones that brought it on dvd didn't want to waste their money paying for a cinema ticket. :D
plasticman - 10/25/2011, 1:11 PM
$4.7 million...that should just about cover nothing from the making of this movie.
plasticman - 10/25/2011, 1:12 PM
And the irony is that it is due to horrible bosses that Green Lantern stunk so bad.
PaulRom - 10/25/2011, 1:14 PM
@WolvieCBM Heh, this any better? ;)

WolvieCBM - 10/25/2011, 1:17 PM

NOLANITE - 10/25/2011, 1:22 PM
4.7 million could cover the lunch money WB had to give up for Reynolds everyday.
4.7 million could cover the whopper meal large cups Burger king offered for a whole week
4.7 million could cover the making of the poster PaulRom has right above my comment.
4.7 million could cover the stupid roller coaster six flags built after this movie
Jefferys - 10/25/2011, 1:24 PM
So wait, how many of those buyers just wanted the Sinestro Corps costume for Bats Arkham City?
marvel72 - 10/25/2011, 1:25 PM

I still think Green lantern was good. there was a ton I didnt like about it, but I still thought it was good.
gac - 10/25/2011, 1:38 PM
GL is a 3 day total and not including blu ray sales. All in all, these are good dvd sales figures. Wait until the full week with blu ray sales is released.
marvel72 - 10/25/2011, 1:39 PM
@ gaston

@ gaston

one year she brought me the spirit on blu-ray,fantastic picture for a shitty movie.
TheDetectiveComicRises - 10/25/2011, 1:56 PM
I admit Green Lantern missed being great but I will say it is good. Bad CMB films are Catwoman, Steel, Nick Fury 90's version, Batman and Robin, Howard the Duck to name a few, but Green Lantern does not go on that list.

Green Lantern ranks with Fantastic Four movies they were good but not great. Green Lantern had more expectations that is why it is a little disappointing but sad thing is the on going bashing. Many say they did not want it to fail but truth is many are not helping either because true comic book fans support regardless and say "okay not exactly what I wanted but learn from your mistakes WB and get Green Lantern heading in the right direction"

Green Lantern is a good movie, it may have been better to us if it were done back in the 90's or early 2000's but now since CMB movies are stepped up more and make bigger money such as The Dark Knight & Iron Man figure more is expected in which I understand but don't keep bashing it because to bash it once fine but to keep doing it and not say hey "make another and make it better" all U r doing is doing what the critics want U to do.

I truly believe The Dark Knight Rises and Man of Steel will begin something special for DC and head into other characters and when the time permits Justice League will be in a movie theatre b4 our very eyes and yes GL movies individually and in Justice League movie and perhaps JL movies will be a huge part of it also.

I normally don't comment on it but I had to today.

Do I want more of the fantastic GL Comic Book stories for the movie "Yes" but that will come in time but 4 now I like the GL movie and that is what counts to me.
UnscrupalousSmurf - 10/25/2011, 2:06 PM
I'm amazed at just how far Marvel fanboys will goe just to say " I Told you so!" hahah, get a life!.....Botom Line, I loved the movie, Next!
SugarYumYum - 10/25/2011, 2:11 PM
Well, it's just the first 3 days. Not fantastic sales but not bad either.

Damn, Bridesmaids is raking it in. Bet there'll be a sequel.
gandalf550 - 10/25/2011, 2:27 PM
YES!!! Go Green Lantern!!!! Onto the awesomeness of the Sinestro Corps sequel!!!! :D
HelaGood - 10/25/2011, 2:50 PM
LMAO!!!!!!!!!!! Zookeeper almost sold the same amount of units!!!!!!!!!!!

god GL was such a major fail!!!!
thalidomide - 10/25/2011, 3:17 PM
ceejay will be pissed if the numbers are not accurate.
Jordanstine - 10/25/2011, 3:28 PM
Wait... X-Men FC made over $9M on that same time frame as Green Lantern made $4.7M?
Jordanstine - 10/25/2011, 3:44 PM
Studios only get 1/4th of the price for DVD, the merchants get basically 3/4th's percentage.

Doing the math even if say Green Lantern sold as much as X-Men Origins Wolverine which sold over $72M, it still wouldn't be enough to warrant a sequel.

Box Office ($219M -55% Studio Take) = $120,000,000

DVD Sales ($72M - 25% Studio Take) = $18,000,000

Total = $138,000,000

In other words, Warner Bros only made $138M which is still $62M short of it's $200M cost.

knocturnal - 10/25/2011, 4:34 PM
I'm confused, how did GL sell more units than fast five and zookeeper but make less $$?
Vital - 10/25/2011, 4:44 PM
What's with all the screaming cbm users lol?
