BOX OFFICE: GOTG Off To A Great Start With Biggest Thursday Night Opening Of 2014

Marvel's gamble looks to be paying off, as the critically acclaimed space adventure earned a very impressive $11.2M from Thursday night screenings -- beating the likes of Godzilla, X-Men: Days Of Future Past and Marvel's own Captain America sequel.

James Gunn's Guardians Of The Galaxy has just shocked the world by pulling in a whopping $11.2M from last night's screenings, actually beating a Marvel's sequel in Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($10.2 million start back in April). The hilarious space opera (which currently sits at 91% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes) also beat Legendary's Godzilla, Sony's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Fox's X-Men: Days of Future Past to give it the biggest pre-show opening of the year so far. Not bad for a non-sequel about a bunch of losers nobody has ever heard of -- just goes to show how bankable and popular the Marvel brand has become, and what a bit of savvy marketing will do for your movie. Plus, it also just happens to be bloody great! You can check out my review HERE.

People are starved for an appealing film that isn't a remake, reboot, spinoff, prequel or sequel. Well deserved and a great victory for comic book movies in general!

Next week: GOTG vs TMNT

You can guess which one is which.
DEVLIN712 - 8/1/2014, 8:23 AM
I can see Guardians being the type of film in which word of mouth does it good at the box office. I think it'll open big and then slow burn it's way to 500 million.

In my second showing now (Imax) with my son...went to midnight show last night, amazing film, up there with Cap 2 for me!
HurricaneXavier - 8/1/2014, 8:34 AM
The movie was amazing.
MexicanSexyman - 8/1/2014, 8:37 AM
Shouldn't this film open up closer to $100 million than $60 million?
Sxcory - 8/1/2014, 8:38 AM
*Small spolier*

This movie exceeded my expectations. I was laughing from start to finish but also had some really touching moments. Especially the drunk scene with Rocket. That actually got to me a bit. Amazing character development.
DefcoN - 8/1/2014, 8:38 AM
YEAH! Is THAT good!

Breaking News:

FOX announces a Silver Surfer solo film
DC/WB announces a reboot of Green Lantern

They both thank Marvel for giving them this opportunity
kalelhawj - 8/1/2014, 8:40 AM
If TMNT is any good it's going to put a dent in to GOTG BO take. A great opening indeed. So this is the week to make as much as they can... I know I'll be taking my family to watch TMNT...
Lozzy - 8/1/2014, 8:40 AM
This calls for a celebration!

YeezusWept - 8/1/2014, 8:41 AM
@Sxcory

I agree. Rocket was a very sympathetic character. That scene (along with many others) took me by surprise.
RamonSuarez - 8/1/2014, 8:42 AM
@Omarvls

Fox won't have any characters to use for Surfer outside Galactus.
Pasto - 8/1/2014, 8:44 AM
DC must be something right if they get brought up in nearly every thread.
THORION76 - 8/1/2014, 8:44 AM
HOLY S*#T SOCKS BATMAN,

I SAW IT LAST NIGHT AND IT WAS THE MOST IVE HAD WITH MY FAMILY IN A LONG TIME!!!!!!!!

THE 70S/80S VIBE WAS AWESOME AND MARVEL HAS TAKEN 5 UNDERGROUND CHARACTERS AND MADE THEM HOUSEHOLD NAMES.

HAIL HYDRA !!!!!!!

I AM GROOT !!!!!!!
Omarvls - 8/1/2014, 8:45 AM
@RamonSuarez

Then FOX will do a Starjammers film or something
My point is that Marvel ONCE AGAIN has proven why they are true trend setters

and even DC Only fanatac
Omarvls - 8/1/2014, 8:45 AM
*even DC Only Fanatics will root for this film to succeed
that way they can get a Green Lantern reboot
Ramiel - 8/1/2014, 8:45 AM
Love this movie! Can't wait to see it again.
DannyRand1225 - 8/1/2014, 8:46 AM
i think its only big competition is TMNT..idk how well or not Expendables and Sin City 2 will do
TheDarkKryptonian - 8/1/2014, 8:46 AM
This is truly the first time that I've managed to avoid the after-credits scene of a Marvel movie until I go see the movie.
Pasto - 8/1/2014, 8:46 AM
I bet yah this film will get 600 in total when all is said an done.
DefcoN - 8/1/2014, 8:47 AM
This movie achieved something inside me I thought impossible. I literally shed some tears during the first 5 minutes and then when the Marvel Studios epic logo showed with the fanfare, darn, I can't even [frick]ing describe it. Man, what a ride.
AlexanderLykins - 8/1/2014, 8:47 AM
You have to imagine Thanos is getting pretty upset at this point.
