BOX OFFICE: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Is Now The Top Domestic Film Of Summer 2014

BOX OFFICE: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Is Now The Top Domestic Film Of Summer 2014

With Guardians of the Galaxy set to return to the #1 spot this weekend as Sin City: A Dame to Kill For flops, the James Gunn helmed Marvel Studios movie will also become the highest grossing summer movie of 2014 beating Transformers: Age of Extinction!

Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez's Sin City: A Dame to Kill For is a flop and soppy teen flick If I Stay (starring Kick-Ass' Chloe Grace Moretz) is also underperforming. That leaves the door wide open for Guardians of the Galaxy to return to the top spot - where it will also beat Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - and break another record at the same time. After earning a total of $239 million by yesterday, the James Gunn helmed movie look set to pass $246 million today meaning that it will top Transformers: Age of Extinction's $243.3 million domestic haul. By the end of the weekend, the latest Marvel Studios movie should reach $252 million! Maleficent is now at third with $237 million and is followed by X-Men: Days of Future Past with $232.6 million and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' $203.2 million. Of course, Transformers: Age of Extinction remains the year's highest grossing movie worldwide with over $1.05 billion. Guardians of the Galaxy - which cost $170 million to produce - is still doing well with $430.7 million and has yet to open in China and Japan.

Cool, Sin City deserved to flop, and I was looking forward to it.

Maleficent just passed The X-Men at the world box office to make it the second highest grossing movie of the year behind only The Transformers. Maybe it's time to get Angelina in a new comic book movie.

Great stuff, completely deserves it, they made a great film. Good to see it beat Transfomers, don't need to see that to know it doesn't deserve it (saw 1-3).

Shouldn't be long until it beats Cap and takes the top spot for 2014 overall. Great going! Doubt it'll stay in that spot (with Hunger Games, Hobbit etc) but performing great.

Great for Guardians, but as much as it hurts me, I think at the worldwide box office TMNT is going to win.

I mean there is a ton of kids that were craving the TMNT movie but very few that knew about guardians.

Hasn't open up in japan, china, and I think about 7 or 8 other countries

It will already be close to 600 million by the time it does open up in those 9 countries
DeathAdder - 8/23/2014, 11:32 AM
Hey DC, a Wonder Woman and Martian Manhunter won't make sense? And Green Lantern need to take place mistly on earth?

Lol, that is why you fail.
Omarvls - 8/23/2014, 11:33 AM
This is what I predict for Marvel's continued Dominance

Age of Ultron
Ant Man
Captain America 3
Dr. Strange
Black Panther
GotG 2
Thor 3
Avengers 3
Ms Marvel

Marvel really has something special with this project. I hope the sequel breaks even more records.
defenderofthefaith - 8/23/2014, 11:35 AM
Jojo- That is why I wrote NEW comic book movie.
batz11 - 8/23/2014, 11:35 AM
Imagine when the GotG and Avengers cross-over...damn, gotta be talking $2-2.5 Billion...mind-blowing!

ALegendaryPanda - 8/23/2014, 11:36 AM
Well done Guardians... well done.

JoJo1982 - 8/23/2014, 11:37 AM
As much as I love my DC movies, seriouse WB/DC should be scratching their head on seeing this movie being a big success for marvel

charlie2094 - 8/23/2014, 11:37 AM

A 'flop' isn't defined by it's quality, it's about it's B.O return and the way Sin City opened, wouldn't be a stretch to call it a flop.
DeusExSponge - 8/23/2014, 11:39 AM
Snooper - It's a good movie, but the quality of a movie doesn't determine whether or not it's a flop at the box office. Maybe under perform is a better word, but it's no where near a success at the box office.
JoJo1982 - 8/23/2014, 11:39 AM
@ defenderofthefaith

I thought news was awhile they was going to bring her back from the dead somehow(flashback) for the sequel
EhMaybeSays - 8/23/2014, 11:39 AM
Still outside the Top 10 worldwide.

Hasn't even opened in some of the larger foreign markets (China and Japan)
TheRationalNerd - 8/23/2014, 11:42 AM
As said in Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes by Iron Man: "They're like the space Avengers" audiences love these team based superhero films. It's almost crazy to imagine that it still hasn't released in some places yet...
JoJo1982 - 8/23/2014, 11:42 AM

Is it to early to predict GotG 2 making a billion in 2017(I finally notice Adam Warlock's cocoon was empty/destroyed in GotG post credit, so he has to be in sequel).
DeusExSponge - 8/23/2014, 11:43 AM
0mega - That retro picture of Star Lord is amazing!!!
TheRationalNerd - 8/23/2014, 11:44 AM

Completely agreed with you man, last years MCU films compared to this years films is like a pebble compared to a boulder. The quality of the MCU films most certainly regained it's place in my heart this year.

Marvel killed it this year with Winter Soldier and GotG
and the fact that GotG is a bonafide BLOCKBUSTER
I bet one of DC/WB upcoming slate of DCCU movies will be New GODS

Can't Wait
LikeAPhoenix - 8/23/2014, 11:47 AM
Hurray for GotG! This was so unexpected. Hopefully, we'll get to see "cosmic" characters with "cosmic" powers in the follow-ups!

Was a Sin City sequel really necessary? Plus, it's cursed by poisoned and passe' Lady Gaga.
JoJo1982 - 8/23/2014, 11:49 AM

2013 Phase 2 <<<<<<<< 2014 Phase 2
DaVinci31 - 8/23/2014, 11:50 AM

JamesMan - 8/23/2014, 11:51 AM
So are we forgetting that Captain America: The Winter Soldier made $259 mil domestically, and The Lego Movie made $257 mil domestic... which is more than $246 mil.

Oh wait, were not counting outside of summer? Well that's a weird stipulation but I guess you have to make it seem like a bigger win that it is (yet). I have no doubt it'll gross the most with time but can we compare it to the other films of the year and not just to what has come out in what has been one of the worst summers for box office in Hollywood?
IFeelLikePablo - 8/23/2014, 11:52 AM

ALegendaryPanda - 8/23/2014, 11:52 AM
Phase 2 started off kinda meh, I liked Thor 2 but Iron Man 3 was a let down to me. THIS YEAR HOWEVER... good god! Marvel just unleashed hell on us, and we still have Age of Ultron to finish it all off!
