BOX OFFICE: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Now Looks Set To Open With $90 Million

Guardians of the Galaxy broke records last night with the biggest Thursday opening of 2014, and the latest tracking info and numbers indicate that the James Gunn helmed movie will in fact open to upwards of $90 million, not the originally expected $65 million. Read on for details!

Guardians of the Galaxy looks like a $250 million movie, but with a production budget of only $170 million, Marvel Studios look set to make a very well-deserved profit on James Gunn's superb movie (Kevin Feige and Disney execs clearly realised that they had something special on their hands, hence why they gave a sequel the greenlight at this past weekend's San Diego Comic-Con). Initial estimations had Guardians of the Galaxy opening with $65 million, or $70 million if lucky. Well, the movie - which isn't a sequel and features characters that even die-hard comic book fans aren't overly familiar with - is exceeding expectations, and will have no trouble beating The Bourne Ultimatum's previous August record of $69.3 million. $90 million is now the expected number (after taking around $36 million today), a huge debut for a movie like this in a month where many blockbusters fail to find their footing. batz11 - 8/1/2014, 1:38 PM
Crazy! I've already seen it twice...if you have a chance to see it in IMAX 3D, WELL WORTH IT! Highly recommend, saw in plain 2D too, IMAX was MUCH better!

i am doing the carlton dance right now

Impressive numbers!

When you consider even Cap 1 and Thor 1 opened with about $65, $90 million + amazing reviews is a fantastic start to the franchise, perform more like Iron Man.

Haven't seen it yet, but looks like it deserves it

I went to Germany in the winter, and you can drink beer at the Theatre, really wish they would bring that to the USA, haha

I really didn't see this big of an opening coming haha but I love it! Thoroughly enjoyed this film.

Also I'm impressed they were able to make this on a $170 mil budget. Could've easily gone north of $200 mil
DannyRand1225 - 8/1/2014, 1:41 PM

CaptainObvious - 8/1/2014, 1:41 PM

Ezio, if you can see it in IMAX 3D, at least once, do so, it was WAY better than normal 2D or I suspect normal 3D...colors were still bright, but the settings were so amazing in 3D, Gunn didn't do a lot of cheesy "3D tricks" either, used to perfection imo...

Real shame it wont dethrone this year's biggest opening weekend which ironically enough belongs to the years worst film: Transformers 4
TheDude - 8/1/2014, 1:49 PM
Question.... So is Nathan Fillion the voice of Howard the Duck?
Humperdink - 8/1/2014, 1:51 PM
Well good job Gunn.

I actually loved Slither and I'm glad the guy had his big shot at the mainstream and it worked.

Hats off to ya.

The Marvel brand is unstoppable.

DrKinsolving - 8/1/2014, 1:53 PM

Hahaha, True, aren't that what purse's are for

Nice, thanks, I'll check it out, I've heard that they serve food, didn't know drinks, but I'm sure it won't compare to the prices in Germany, everything was so much cheaper over there

It's official. Marvel Studios has become the new Pixar.
ChowdaHead - 8/1/2014, 1:54 PM
Only real problem with the film was that the whole time we are reminded of how human Quill is, yet he can survive 2 exposures to the vacuums of space with nothing but his typical get up and helmet, come out 100% unharmed, can grab the infinity stone and contain its power even though earlier in the film the pink chick gets blown to shit, and not til the end are we told he has special DNA. Other than that it was perfect.
TelaVizion - 8/1/2014, 1:55 PM
@DrKinsolving there is beer and wine to drink at AMC's Dine-In theatres
blackandyellow - 8/1/2014, 1:55 PM
Is there an end credits scene other than Howard the Duck?
DrDoom - 8/1/2014, 1:57 PM

No. That's the only one. No mid-credits scene this time.
Spideysense44 - 8/1/2014, 1:58 PM
Comic book movies have come a long way
DeathAdder - 8/1/2014, 1:58 PM
Meanwhile over at DC, Wonder Woman solo movie won't make sense, Martian Manhunter isn't going to ever get made, Flash is going to stay on tv, Green Lantern is going to need a reboot after that disaster.

But I guess they have Batman and Superman so they can recycle and reboot those two for years.
TelaVizion - 8/1/2014, 1:59 PM
@ChowdaHead I'm guess you didn't know about his dad J-Son before now.
