GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY: Benicio del Toro On His Marvel Contract As The Collector

Benicio del Toro says James Gunns' "pep" during their initial conversation about playing The Collector in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy was what initially drew him to the role.

Actor Benicio del Toro spoke to Collider about his role in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, including what drew him to the role, how he developed the character and what his contract with Marvel Studios entails. Said del Toro on The Collector, "What James [Gunn] wanted, that I found out little by little as I was doing it, is that he wanted me to explore and just keep pushing the character and keep creating [him] as I was in front of the camera."

SYNOPSIS: Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits–Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand - with the galaxy’s fate in the balance. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is presented by Marvel Studios and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gilian, Djimon Hounsou with John C. Reilly, Glenn Close as Commander Rael and Benicio del Toro as The Collector. Distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, the film opens August 1, 2014.

Should we know that fish dude in the aquarium in the poster?
Sipprelle - 7/29/2014, 4:14 PM
@Hippo Why?
SimonPhoenix - 7/29/2014, 4:16 PM
Is it terrible that I'd much rather READ the information than have to watch another crappy video?
ckal - 7/29/2014, 4:16 PM
Ha Del Toro is awesome.

Did you sign one of those multi picture contracts?

"I really don't know. I think?" (paraphrasing)
LordOfTheZegaRealm - 7/29/2014, 4:18 PM
@batz Aquaman?
Sipprelle - 7/29/2014, 4:18 PM
@SimonPhoenix I'm half way through and it is just way too boring.

To anyone about to see the video, he basically says he's not sure how many he's signed on for, but if they wanted him back he'd be fine with doing it.
ruadh - 7/29/2014, 4:19 PM
Damn. He us probably going to replace captain america in part 4. Isn't that what multi contracts means?
GliderMan - 7/29/2014, 4:25 PM
@ruadh Huh?

I think he'll bring something cool to the movie. Can't wait to see it.
DaVinci31 - 7/29/2014, 4:27 PM
Yo, but like why does The Collector have The Human Centipede locked up in the back there?
PymParticle - 7/29/2014, 4:27 PM
*spoiler* If you've seen the movie by now you'll know the twist in the third act is that the collector is the Mandarin. So unexpected.
Abary - 7/29/2014, 4:27 PM
He'll probably return a lot more in a small role.
MrReese - 7/29/2014, 4:28 PM

Good eye. :D
It might be the Inhuman Centipede, though.
XF14 - 7/29/2014, 4:33 PM
Damnit, none of Collider's videos are working for me >.<
XF14 - 7/29/2014, 4:34 PM
@SimonPhoenix
I prefer transcripts to video as well most of the time, especially when in my case the video doesnt work/appear.
bobevanz - 7/29/2014, 4:48 PM
Hey pim you got a resource for this? It's verrrry odd and left field, but somewhat justifiable. But it is hard to believe you lol. 2 DAYS!
Space - 7/29/2014, 4:57 PM
You're gonna rock in GOTG David Bowie :)
KurtWagner1225 - 7/29/2014, 4:57 PM
i have heard he isnt in the movie much but he is very good job.. he plays The Collector as very alien..its just cool.
KurtWagner1225 - 7/29/2014, 4:58 PM
Space-haha!!..whats funny is the The Collector is intrduced through a David Bowie song in the film so they are aware of the David Bowie resemblance
ruadh - 7/29/2014, 5:12 PM
@GliderMan, its a joke. I'm playing off the assumption by many nerds who, despite severe evidence to the contrary, assume the movies will follow the comics, specifically by killing off the first star to make rdj money without being rdj and replacing him. The big piece of evidence usually cited is how Evans has a shorter contract than Stan. (Which is really just because of Evans uncertainty at the time of signing on, and of course Stan isn't necessarily guaranteed to fulfill all those appearances, look at Ed Norton's contract.)

Thus, I am teasing that actors signed for multi films will replace Evans.
KurtWagner1225 - 7/29/2014, 5:13 PM
oh ,i like the interviewer..its Steven Weintraub.. he is very cool

TheRealRemyLebeau - 7/29/2014, 7:20 PM
Remember when some of the users here dissed the mid credit scene in Thor 2 with the collector and thought Guardians was going to be some low budget looking syfy channel movie? Yeah those were the days lol.
TankD - 7/29/2014, 9:01 PM

TankD - 7/29/2014, 9:37 PM

I completely felt the same way. And was this article really necessary? But I agree Del Toro takes on unique roles and usually delivers. Cant wait to see this movie!

Just saw Guardians tonight WITH the end credit scene.

SPOILERS

SPOILERS!

SPOILERS!!!!!

After Ophelia blows up the Collector's museum during the movie, we are brought to the Collector sitting in the rubble with bandages rubbing his head. Cosmo (In full Russian Cosmonaut gear) comes up and starts licking his face while the Collector has a defeated look on his face. A voice is then heard off screen saying "You shouldn't let him lick your face like that"

It cuts to a broken display with non other than Howard the Duck sitting, staring at the Collector drinking a martini. He's all CGI and lis wearing his trademark red coat.

"He was licking his own ass." He says as he stares at him.

His voice sounded just like Nathan Fillion, so my guess is that this is his secret role.

END SPOILER

TheGambitFreak - 7/30/2014, 5:59 AM
I like how that guy had an orgasm at the end. "OOOOOOOhhhhhhhhaaaaaaauuuugggggghhhh" What the [frick]? I hate people, man.
TheGambitFreak - 7/30/2014, 6:10 AM
I honestly think that after-credits scene was stupid, had it been in the regular running, it would've been a good bit. The shawarma scene was in good fun cause it was a gag. Marvel mistook audiences reaction, thinking we wanted to see stupid, comedic after scene stuff instead of actual stingers like the Avengers tease in Iron Man. Iron Man 3's "Tony Talking To Bruce" scene was not funny and was pointless. Thor: The Dark World's "Thor Making Out with Jane As The Mystery Creature Runs Rampant" was poorly edited and pieced together and come on... We know they're not gonna even mention the beast running around England in future installments. Why do it? Then you have The Winter Soldier, which brought back some hope to the franchise. But then we got this bringing us down again. How about Adam Warlock hatching from his cocoon? Dr. Strange? Hell, should've given us Thanos sweet-talking Death or, what would've been awesome, have him sitting on his throne as he looks over his gauntlet, with the mind gem missing. That would be a nice stinger. But nope. We got Howard The Duck. Who won't move this franchise along whatsoever. Thanks, Marvel...
