James Gunn Dishes On Star-Lord's Dad And THANOS' Role In GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2

Will the mad titan Thanos be the main baddie in Guardians of the Galaxy 2? Is Peter Quill's father the Emperor of the Spartoi Empire, like in the comics? Director James Gunn answers both after the jump

"There have been a lot of documents passed around about who Peter Quill’s father is between a select two or three of us," says James Gunn of the question raised at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy, which will be answered in the 2017 sequel. "That’s been part of the plan since the beginning, that’s something I had to work out before we shot the screenplay. We wanted to make sure Yondu’s place in everything made sense and it does, so it’s all very specific stuff." For those speculating on who Peter Quill's father might be in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the director then confirmed to Empire that J'son, aka Jason of Spartax, who is Star-Lord's father in the comics, can be ruled out. "It’s definitely not the character who it is in the comics, I’ll say that much," Gunn said.

Another character who is expected to appear, or rather return, in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is none other than Thanos, played by Josh Brolin. In fact, there is heavy speculation the mad titan will be the main villain in the 2017 sequel, which would then set in motion his heavier presence in Marvel's Avengers 3. However, Gunn confirms that that will not exactly be the case. "He will show up [in the sequel] if he helps our story and he will not show up at all if not," he said."Thanos is not the most important thing in Guardians 2, that’s for damn sure. There’s the Guardians themselves and other threats the Guardians are going to be facing that are not Thanos." The director continued, "I think Thanos has been lonely for a long time. He can handle it. He’s used to his loneliness. He’s got some other kids out there. He’s got to look after them. Nebula’s probably the sweetest of them, which tells you what his kids are like..." Anyhow, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 releases July 28, 2017.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits–Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand - with the galaxy’s fate in the balance. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is presented by Marvel Studios and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gilian, Djimon Hounsou with John C. Reilly, Glenn Close as Commander Rael and Benicio del Toro as The Collector. Distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, the film opens August 1, 2014

I really hope Thanos is the main baddie, if not, has a much bigger role.
DrKinsolving - 8/12/2014, 9:58 AM
I definitely want to see more Thanos
Doopie - 8/12/2014, 10:00 AM
the small snippet we had of him was great I thought. more is better
batz11 - 8/12/2014, 10:01 AM
Thank you, [frick]in' slowest cbm news last few days/week...
JatevinM - 8/12/2014, 10:03 AM
......why would he change who Quills father is
MrCBM56 - 8/12/2014, 10:04 AM
Thanos better show up. I want as much as him as we can get.
Invictor - 8/12/2014, 10:04 AM
I wonder who will be a the main or secondary threat in Guardians of the Galaxy. It could possibly be the Kree Empire since the peace treaty was meddled with and it resulted in the (possible) death of Ronan. Especially since the Kree Ambassador refused to condemn Ronan for his actions.
Invictor - 8/12/2014, 10:04 AM
be the*
TheRationalNerd - 8/12/2014, 10:05 AM

Mikey all the way for me! lol But they were both hilarious!
sKeemAn - 8/12/2014, 10:06 AM
They are building Thanos up. I hope that his character lives up to the hype in the movies.
Invictor - 8/12/2014, 10:06 AM
Let's not forget they could also explore Magus and The Universal Church of Truth.
sKeemAn - 8/12/2014, 10:07 AM
I'm glad that they are taking it slow with Thanos. I want him to be that baddest villain in movie history.
batz11 - 8/12/2014, 10:09 AM
Think Quill's pops could be Eros (Starfox), brings the Eternals in to play and would make it very interesting having Pete's dad, a brother to Thanos...plus, he's a womanizer...

homodrome - 8/12/2014, 10:09 AM
This really makes the theory that it's Adam Warlock seem more plausible.
Gusto - 8/12/2014, 10:10 AM
I bet his father was Mork from Ork.
MercwithMouth - 8/12/2014, 10:11 AM
Maybe...just maybe...hear me out...dammit, listen to me!!!

What if Quill's dad will be the dead Kree from AoS? I haven't seen GotG yet (4 MORE DAY!), so I'm not sure if it makes sense...
batz11 - 8/12/2014, 10:12 AM
Possible Merc...
TankD - 8/12/2014, 10:13 AM
NOOOOO I totally talked alot of shit on that "Who is peter quills father?" editorial. Damn....
batz11 - 8/12/2014, 10:14 AM
When this scene comes up, look for a blue dude in one of those circles, could be the Kree from AoS?

MrBlackJack - 8/12/2014, 10:14 AM
Do whatever you want Gunn, you have my money.
DannyRand1225 - 8/12/2014, 10:15 AM
oh well..i would have liked it to be J'son of Spartax just to see the dynamic between him and Star lord but aslong as its interesting..i think Quills dad being someone else can be cool.. the way Quills mother describes his father and what Nova Prime says about him..i think Adam Warlock being his dad would be an interesting take on it
batz11 - 8/12/2014, 10:16 AM

One of the best things that came out of GotG...the same cinematographer is doing Avengers AoU! I thought the entire film was beautiful and had such a grand scale, can't wait to see that 'style' brought to AoU....
batz11 - 8/12/2014, 10:17 AM
It's ok Tank...

kinghulk - 8/12/2014, 10:17 AM
No J'son awwwwwwwwwwwww. in that case i wonder who his dad will be, will it be a character from the comics or a completely original character. what ever change they have made i hope it's good and i hope adam warlock and starfox arent his dad.
DannyRand1225 - 8/12/2014, 10:18 AM
i have said it before..these movies are their own universes ,their own takes and versions of these character..we can like a take on a character or not..i hope its just well done at the end of the day
TheRationalNerd - 8/12/2014, 10:18 AM
Easy...Thanos is his father. lol
yossarian - 8/12/2014, 10:19 AM
DrKinsolving - 8/12/2014, 10:19 AM
Damn, haha, I was rooting for J'son
LubedUp - 8/12/2014, 10:19 AM
"Thanos is his father", yeah i can really see a huge purple dude going to Earth and banging his mum.....
batz11 - 8/12/2014, 10:19 AM
It's Thanos brother, tellin' ya...

Plus, Gunn is makin' his own money now!
DannyRand1225 - 8/12/2014, 10:20 AM
idk..i think Adam Warlock being Quills dad can be really interesting
SnapperCarr - 8/12/2014, 10:22 AM
I'm thinking Starhawk from the original Guardians.
DannyRand1225 - 8/12/2014, 10:23 AM

the way Quills mother describes him is that he was an angel, "a being of pure light" she could be being metaphorical or she could be literal..plus Nova Prime says that his father is from an unknown ancient species..one they have not seen before
DannyRand1225 - 8/12/2014, 10:24 AM
also i think Thanos should be saved for Avengers 3..i am really liking the buildup to him
sKeemAn - 8/12/2014, 10:25 AM
I like the idea of Warlock as his father.
Vegeta - 8/12/2014, 10:27 AM
I'll be EXTREMELY disappointed if Adam Warlock is Quill's father.
batz11 - 8/12/2014, 10:27 AM
Yep Rebel
XelCorp - 8/12/2014, 10:28 AM
James, You blew me away with this movie. I have faith for the sequel BUT if you do not Give us more on Gamora's backstory (Flash backs *Fingers Crossed*) will/should involve more appearance from Thanos I will be dissapointed. I also think Nebula should be explored even more because at the end of the movie it was hard to tell wether she was still loyal to Thanos or not. PLEASE GUNN :)
frova - 8/12/2014, 10:28 AM
this could go a million ways...

what we know:

"he was an angel composed of pure light"
"that guy was a total dick"
he's from an ancient race the Nova aren't able to identify
Vegeta - 8/12/2014, 10:29 AM
Adam Warlock has his own story. It doesn't need to be watered down with all this paternal crap.
