James Gunn Says Joss Whedon Helped To Cast 'Thanos' In GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

As James Gunn shares the latest Guardians of the Galaxy production image of Chris Pratt taking flight, video interviews from his first promotional stop in Singapore yesterday have surfaced. Check it out!

After completing work on Guardians of the Galaxy, which now has a shocking PG-13 rating, director James Gunn headed to Singapore to begin his promotional tour for the upcoming Marvel space opera. Tagging along with him was stars Zoe Saldana and Dave Bautista, who all took part in live Q&A; during which, James Gunn discussed working with Joss Whedon on the script. More interestingly, the Guardians director confirmed that "we had to work together in casting Thanos because Thanos is gonna appear in stuff that I do, as well as stuff Joss does." Of course, he wouldn't confirm if it was Josh Brolin playing the purple villain, but it's pretty obvious at this point. Whedon having input on who plays Thanos is not at all surprising considering the Mad Titan first appeared in The Avengers, although with a different actor. Anyhow, check out the video interviews below and James Gunn's latest set photo featuring Chris Pratt "taking flight in a Mining Pod."

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits–Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand - with the galaxy’s fate in the balance. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is presented by Marvel Studios and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gilian, Djimon Hounsou with John C. Reilly, Glenn Close as Commander Rael and Benicio del Toro as The Collector. Distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, the film opens August 1, 2014

smgmayhem - 7/10/2014, 7:40 AM
I love the elaborate sets they have built for this movie.
JordanKing - 7/10/2014, 7:41 AM
Pheezmatic - 7/10/2014, 7:41 AM
Bautista looks mad lumberjacky...
smgmayhem - 7/10/2014, 7:41 AM
Wow I'm second... Do I get a cookie or a small plastic trophy?
DannyRand1225 - 7/10/2014, 7:42 AM
so gunn and whedon were both in charge of casting Thanos(who he didnt confirm as Josh Brolin)
JordanKing - 7/10/2014, 7:42 AM
Just look how uninterested that Singapore dude is at the press conference.
smgmayhem - 7/10/2014, 7:43 AM
@JordanKing - lol why do I feel like he made that pose directly for this meme to be created?
DannyRand1225 - 7/10/2014, 7:44 AM
i have a question(which i asked last night on the DD thread):im excited for all the upcoming casting in the MCU but the choices that i am most excited for are Josh Brolin as Thanos,James Spader as Ultron and Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil, what choices are u guys looking forward to in the MCU?
smgmayhem - 7/10/2014, 7:46 AM
@Ezio - I am really interested in seeing how the Vision looks for A2
Lozzy - 7/10/2014, 7:46 AM
Oh man, I seriously cant wait for this movie!!!
JordanKing - 7/10/2014, 7:47 AM
@smgmayhem Right?? It was just begging to be created. Balance has been restored.
smgmayhem - 7/10/2014, 7:49 AM
What I really would like to know is if we will get some kind of reference or cameo of Black Panther or Wakanda.
Phronesis - 7/10/2014, 7:52 AM
I'm really impressed that in a rather CGI heavy movie, they still went very practical.
smgmayhem - 7/10/2014, 7:52 AM
Yeah I went to the 17 minute preview and it was awesome. It was well balanced between action, humor, and a hint of suspense.
Maven - 7/10/2014, 7:52 AM
Joss has some weird fetish for Hemsworth's arms and favors Vision all around. Guess I should be looking forward to those two.
smgmayhem - 7/10/2014, 7:53 AM
And the look of the Nova Corp are great in action
DannyRand1225 - 7/10/2014, 7:54 AM
also,i wonder why they arent confirming Brolin as Thanos already!!
Phronesis - 7/10/2014, 7:54 AM
Josh Brolin as Thanos is sorta generic to me, Spader as Ultron is an unexpected damn-there perfect casting, and Cox as Daredevil is a really good choice. The casting I'm most looking forward to would have to be Black Panther.
Maven - 7/10/2014, 7:55 AM
Gotta say, the humor/dialogue from that preview... Not sure if it'll suit me or everyone that sees this film. Like ezio said, Gunn - or maybe Marvel, has a unique sense of humor that just doesn't click with everybody. IM3, for example, suffered from that.
blackandyellow - 7/10/2014, 7:56 AM
Looks like testicles.
Maven - 7/10/2014, 7:57 AM
John C. Reilly's lines are pretty terrible IMO.
DannyRand1225 - 7/10/2014, 7:57 AM
Phronesis-cool,i dont know if i agree with Brolin being Genric,i think someone like Keith David would be generic , this is unexpected and kind of out of left field imo, Spader as Ultron is maybe the biggest reason why i am excited for Avengers 2 and i have seen Cox in clips of Boardwalk Empire and he can be suave and charming while also being haunted and dark aswell..i do hope they announce Black Panther officially at comic con
Phronesis - 7/10/2014, 7:59 AM
@Maven I heard the audio too, Reily dialogue comes off so boring. Hell, Diesel who utters 3 words sounded more interesting.
DannyRand1225 - 7/10/2014, 7:59 AM
Maven-i heard him and Glenn Close arent in the movie much

Maven-yeah,shane black and gunn have a sense of humor that doesnt really gel with some people
Phronesis - 7/10/2014, 8:02 AM
@EzioKenway1225 I say generic because if they're making the character an all out brute force, which it seems like, nothing new. I want a bit of sophistication in Thanos. I'll be happily proved wrong.
DannyRand1225 - 7/10/2014, 8:02 AM
i watch the blacklist and Spaders character of Raymond "Red" Reddington makes that show, without him, it would not be as good as it is imo, such an interesting, layered character who has a sense of fun about him but can be very scary too

yossarian - 7/10/2014, 8:02 AM
Come on and just release the damn movie.
DannyRand1225 - 7/10/2014, 8:03 AM
Phronesis-ah i see, understandable,i think he will have a sophistication to him
MercwithMouth - 7/10/2014, 8:04 AM
John C. Reilly is my only gripe in GotG. I can't stand the guy, he belongs with Will Ferrell, Seth Rogen, and Ben Stiller in the bargain bin at a Salvation Army store...

But everything else for GotG looks incredible. Gunn is the man.

I'm most looking forward to Spader, Elizabeth Olsen, and from non-MCU, Tatum. I can't stand Taterhead, but he's playing my favorite X-Men, so I gotta give him a chance.
MsDarkPhoenix - 7/10/2014, 8:04 AM
@yoss September 4th!! Oh wait, you are not Greek...
Phronesis - 7/10/2014, 8:05 AM
Listening to the 17 minute preview audio, I already know in will absolutely love the team interaction. The prosthetic leg joke was really funny. Seriously, why does the trailers come off so dull?
Maven - 7/10/2014, 8:05 AM

The only other (latest) work of Black's I had seen prior to IM3 was Kiss Kiss and I loved it. It's why I was shocked I didn't enjoy his work on IM3. Same with some of the humor I've seen from GOTG - I loved Super, Slither, etc, but not everything that worked in those films is going to work for - say in this situation, a CBM. Sure I'll wait and see. GOTG is round 2 of that theory.
DannyRand1225 - 7/10/2014, 8:06 AM
the five characters im most looking forward to seeing in Guardians are Chris Pratt as Star Lord, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Lee Pace as Ronan, Karen Gillain as Nebula and Benicio Del Toro as The Collector
MsDarkPhoenix - 7/10/2014, 8:07 AM
@Merc I loved John C. Reilly at Chicago!! But I love everything about that musical...

smgmayhem - 7/10/2014, 8:07 AM
Wasn't Chadwick Boseman rumored to be one of Marvel's choices for Black Panther?
DannyRand1225 - 7/10/2014, 8:08 AM
Maven-nteresting, i saw the 17 min preview and the humor was mixed well with the action, some of the jokes did fall flat but they felt like jokes u needed to see the whole movie to understand
MercwithMouth - 7/10/2014, 8:09 AM

Check out some of Brolin's other work, like W., Milk, and In the Valley of Elah. He's got great range, great emotion, and that sophistication you're looking for.
DannyRand1225 - 7/10/2014, 8:11 AM
the way Rhomann Dey seems to be written is how Coulson was in the first iron man to me, very dry and straightforward
MercwithMouth - 7/10/2014, 8:13 AM

Actually never seen Chicago. Don't really do the whole musical thing. Didn't mind Burlesque though, as Christina Aguilera has one of the best voices on the planet. And it doesn't hurt that she looked beyond [frick]able in that flick.
