Indicating that we can expect familiar faces in Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Kevin Feige has explained why Guardians of the Galaxy was greenlit, and soon Doctor Strange. Check it out!

During a recent Q&A in anticipation of Iron Man 3, producer and head of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige discussed the forthcoming Guardians of the Galaxy adaptation, and finally introducing Doctor Strange in the third phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. (Transcription via @AsiaNemesi)

“It was long time that we wanted to bring in a movie and adventure set entirely in space,” Feige explained to Italian magazine Best Movie when asked why the James Gunn-directed space epic was greenlit. “We immediately liked the idea of making a movie based on a comic mostly unknown by people and that present various superheroes in one movie. Although it's set up from another part of the universe, a human will be in a superhero role of Peter Quill, played by Chris Pratt. There will be lots of characters: from a sexy warrior to an animated tree, and a raccoon with a gun. It's an unique franchise and we are pleased that it's so different from what we have done so far.”

Whether Phase Three will consist of only new heroes, Feige seemingly indicates there will be familiar faces per more sequels. “Currently the third phase is still developing. The 99.9% of our time is used for Phase 2, the development of The Avengers 2 and the Guardians of the Galaxy keeps us very busy. Definitely we're not leaving aside the old glories and we can also see familiar faces such as Iron Man, Thor and Captain America.” Lastly, after Kevin Feige was asked which superhero he's most excited to see on the big screen, he said, “Dr. Strange! I love the aura of mystery that surrounds this superhero and the magical world that surrounds him. We've never faced anything like this and there is a lot of material that we could exploit. I would love to also see a new superhero in the ranks of the Avengers. We shall see!”

Marvel Studios presents “Guardians of the Galaxy”—A big space epic featuring an unlikely cast of Marvel characters, including Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Groot and Rocket Raccoon, who must team up in order to defeat a cosmic force of epic proportions. Starring Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista & Zoe Saldana and directed by James Gunn from a screenplay by James Gunn, “Guardians of the Galaxy” is based on the Marvel comic book series “Guardians of the Galaxy,” first published in 1969 and revived in 2008. Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures will distribute “Guardians of the Galaxy” on August 1, 2014, in 3D. In addition, Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on other iconic Marvel characters including “Iron Man 3” on May 3, 2013; “Thor: The Dark World ” on November 8, 2013; “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” on April 4, 2014; the sequel to “Marvel's The Avengers” on May 1, 2015; and “Ant-Man” on November 6, 2015!

MegaPrime1107 - 4/5/2013, 12:49 PM
The Amazing Spider Man should be in Phase Three
Rhysno1 - 4/5/2013, 12:49 PM

GizmoEl - 4/5/2013, 1:12 PM
I would love it if the amazing Spider-Man replaced iron man as the media poster child.

Iron man and RDJ plastered all over the posters sold avengers. Many people came looking forward to an iron man centric movie because of what they saw in ads and posters but left the theater with an appreciation for all the characters that aren't as commercially successful. Do you think the avengers would have sold well if hulk was in the forefront of all the posters? He easily stole the show but he wouldn't initially draw people in. Iron man does that. Which marvel character is more popular than iron man? Easy. Spidey.

Include him in posters and toys. The kids will swarm. He doesn't have to have any sort of leadership role in the avengers, that honor should remain with Cap. But if they're trying to market the movie and don't know what to do once ironman retires, put spidey there.

"There will be lots of characters: from a sexy warrior to an animated tree, and a raccoon with a gun."

Obviously too large a roster for an Avengers 2 or 3 but give me any 6 of those with crossed fingers for Ms Marvel She Hulk and Scarlet Witch
RetroFit - 4/5/2013, 1:22 PM
"I would love to also see a new superhero in the ranks of the Avengers."

Just lose Black Widow and Hawkeye (way too bland) and give me Wasp, Hank (Ant AND Giant Man) and Ms. Marvel instead!
RetroFit - 4/5/2013, 1:22 PM
And Vision, too!
Inhuman - 4/5/2013, 1:26 PM

I'm looking foward to that dr strange movie, I just hope they dont make him a shield agent, because I have a feeling they'll do that and make it similar to hellboy with the whole department for paranormal activity thing, keep him as a neurosurgeon, i'm getting tired of everyone being either a scientist of shield agent
genesis609 - 4/5/2013, 1:31 PM

this is so fricking true someone really need to ask Kevin Feige about WTF is happening to Black Panther.
Inhuman - 4/5/2013, 1:47 PM
Heres my argument that Marvel shouldnt make Iron Man 4

So far Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, Thor 3, Captain America 3, and The Avengers 3 are all confirmed to be part of Phase 3. Thats 5 movies right there. Best case scenario is that Phase 3 has 6 or 7 movies because they need to introduce new characters. Phase 1 had 6 movies and Phase 2 has 5 movies. If 5 movies are already confirmed to be Phase 3 that leaves only 2 movie spots open if we want to make it 7 movies for Phase 3. That leaves it between Iron Man 4, The Incredible Hulk 2, Black Panther, Guardians Of The Galaxy 2, and Inhumans as the most logical choices. I think I can speak for everyone that we would much rather choose Black Panther and Incredible Hulk 2 over Iron Man 4. Thats why when people say Iron Man 4 I just shake my head lol
Inhuman - 4/5/2013, 1:49 PM
Iron Man 4 takes up a movie slot that could potentially be used on a Black Panther and Incredible Hulk sequel. Retire the Iron Man series and only bring Tony Stark back for Avengers 2 and Avengers 3 and thats it. They talk so much about expanding the MCU. Well Marvel take your own advice and give us a Back Panther, Doctor Strange, and Ant-Man
BlackFlash - 4/5/2013, 1:50 PM
I've pushed a Black Panther to the back of my mind because I really don't think there gonna do anything with him, which pisses me off.
screechop - 4/5/2013, 1:51 PM
People need to think of the bigger picture. The idea of trilogies is way too engrained in our brains. What they've created with the Marvel Cinematic Universe if done properly can go beyond Avengers 3. Let Iron Man stick around, why are you so quick to move on. Take in these movies and enjoy them. Let the cinematic universe expand, bring in new characters. I don't want a civil war movie because it won't be as awesome as it could be if done in 10 years. I know it's hard to see that and you could argue that RDJ and Evans and all these actors playing the character now could be long gone, but this can be similar to the way characters are drawn different in comics. DIfferent artists have different interpertations of how they look just like different writers although sticking to the source have different ideas on how a character will act or react.

I'm very supportive of the James Bond idea for all of the super heroes that are introduced. I don't want stories and the Marvel Cinematic Universe for that matter to be rushed for the sake of actors.
marvel72 - 4/5/2013, 1:53 PM
i must be the only user that isn't bothered about seeing a black panther movie, don't get me wrong if marvel studios made a black panther movie i'd watch it but i'm not that bothered if it doesn't happen.

want a daredevil,nova,inhumans & the incredible hulk 2 more.
InfiniteMonkey - 4/5/2013, 1:53 PM
@smartell511 The problem is the definitive thinking of 3's.
There are loads of numbers. Stretch out your imagination and go Iron Man 10 or Phase 10.
Why stop at 3.
Then all Marvel properties will be showcased and there are no headaches of trying to fit things in.
screechop - 4/5/2013, 1:54 PM
in saying that i agree that iron man should sit out a phase, introduce characters and bring him back later on.
Inhuman - 4/5/2013, 1:54 PM

Ant-Man (introduce Wasp as well and they fight MODOK)
The Incredible Hulk 2 (Bring back Betty and General Ross and they fight Absorbing Man)
Thor 3 (introduce Beta Ray Bill and they fight Enchantress, Executioner, and Surtur)
Doctor Strange (fights Dormammu)
Captain America 3 (fights Baron Zemo)
Black Panther (fights Klaw)
The Avengers 3 (introduce Vision and they fight Ultron)
InfiniteMonkey - 4/5/2013, 1:57 PM
@Gusto, Oi, yer going to need a rope mate. LOOOL
BlackFlash - 4/5/2013, 1:59 PM
@fettastic - I get what your saying but they don't need to x out any of the big 3 (I've never included Hulk it's always been IM, Cap and Thor), as long as those 3 are there they can pretty much do what they want with the rest of the members.
ATrueHero1987 - 4/5/2013, 2:02 PM
I do think BP will be part of phase 3. I mean, they already started on a script in 2011.
Inhuman - 4/5/2013, 2:03 PM
Do I admit I love trilogies and I am used to the "3"? Absolutely but look at history, most of the time a 4th movie in an established trilogy pretty much suck. I think youre over saturating the character Iron Man to the public with another Iron Man movie. Its not like we wont see Tony again. Hes coming back in Avengers 2 and 3. If you want to talk about more Phases, I love the idea of more Phases. Problem is look at the roster that Marvel Studios has... Daredevil, Punisher, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, Ms. Marvel, Guardians Of The Galaxy, Inhumans, Ghost Rider soon, Blade, Moon Knight. All those characters could have movies and thats like 10 right there. Cant fit 10 in 1 year. Thats why Im saying trilogies is probably the best way to have other characters have their own movie. I would say the same thing about Thor 4, Cap 4 etc etc.. No need for 4th movies.
Inhuman - 4/5/2013, 2:05 PM

(2015) Ant-Man
(2016) The Incredible Hulk 2
(2016) Thor 3
(2017) Doctor Strange
(2017) Captain America 3
(2018) Black Panther
(2018) The Avengers 3
