Lee Pace Says 'Ronan the Accuser' Is Less Relatable, More Evil In GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

Comparing the chief Guardians of the Galaxy villain to Osama bin Laden, actor Lee Pace explains Ronan the Accuser's appearance, how he came to understand the character, and much more. Check it out

During a recent interview with Yahoo Movies, actor Lee Pace gushed more about his role as the main villain in Marvel and James Gunn's forthcoming Guardians of the Galaxy adaptation. "I’ve never played a character like Ronan before," admitted Pace. "I like a bombastic villain, and that’s what I had a good time doing. It was the most fun playing this character… I was stronger than I’ve ever been, doing all this training, and the character is just a beast. He’s just so evil. At first when I started working on him, I was thinking, 'We’ve seen so many great performances of villains by very talented actors in superhero movies. I’ve got to find something relatable about this guy.' But the more I played him, the more fun I had with just being evil. Evil, evil, evil. He’s an alien – there’s no kind of human rules. There’s nothing to relate to, actually. It just became, like, the more dark I could conceive of him, the more I understood him."

Lee Pace was then, jokingly, asked if Ronan the Accuser's eyebrows are one of his most evil traits. "You don’t even see my eyebrows!" the actor replied. "It’s covered up with that black ceremonial paint. He’s like Osama bin Laden – he’s like a religious fanatic. It’s so cool. When in my life did I think I’d be playing a character like this? When I got the call about this, I was like, 'What? OK, OK… I’m in.' I’d auditioned for Star-Lord, and then Chris obviously got the part… and then they called my agent and said, 'We have another part for him!' So I quickly put that on tape and Ronan worked out." In the latest issue of Total Film magazine, Lee Pace offers some other interesting details about Ronan: "He's the Accuser of the Kree; he passes judgement. He's got a code to live by. This is a spiritual mission." Meanwhile, Guardians director James Gunn has teased the film's post-credits scene(s). "There will be a little something special at the very end of the movie... very special," he said in a Facebook post. "But that's all I can say about it. I'm not sure we're even going to have it at the premiere so it's not spoiled online for everyone seeing the film opening night." What do you think?

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits–Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand - with the galaxy’s fate in the balance. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is presented by Marvel Studios and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gilian, Djimon Hounsou with John C. Reilly, Glenn Close as Commander Rael and Benicio del Toro as The Collector. Distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, the film opens August 1, 2014.

i dont think ronan should necessarily be relatable..i just hope he is not evil for evils sake and going by the character descriptions, of him making a deal with Thanos in that he will help Thanos get the orb and in exchange, thanos will help him eradicate the Xandarians, the Ancient enemies of the Kree and that his character has a religious bent to him in that he thinks strength is virtue and weakness is sin.. he sould be interesting and that sounds interesting to me..i hope he is menacing
QuestiontheAnswer - 6/6/2014, 12:35 PM
Evil is not relatable?
WombRaider - 6/6/2014, 12:37 PM
so i guess ronan wont turn to good? i was hoping he would be in the next one as an ally
PsychoticSpaceRaccoon - 6/6/2014, 12:44 PM
I don't like the sound of this. I don't mind Ronan starting out as a villain (for the advancement of the Kree Empire), but I hope Marvel just doesn't a) make him pure evil and kill him off or b) let him survive but continue to be a straight up evil character. I like the arc of Ronan in the comics, and it would be a shame to deny the MCU of that same transition from villain to anti-hero to sometimes hero (The Annihilators, for instance).
ezio619 - 6/6/2014, 12:47 PM
psychotic-i think he might die in this one...i dont mind ronan being evil..i just hope he still is memorable and menacing
Starfox - 6/6/2014, 12:48 PM

Agreed. That's one of the most interesting things about the character IMO; is his transition from Pure Evil to a Reluctant Hero. I don't think they will kill him off though. I think he will survive for more films seeing as how Marvel hasn't really killed off many of their villains yet lol ;)
Reasonnnn - 6/6/2014, 12:49 PM
I just want a good movie. I don't mind them twisting origins/arcs of certain characters.
kinghulk - 6/6/2014, 12:52 PM
i just hope to god they dont kill him
ezio619 - 6/6/2014, 12:52 PM
lee pace is a great actor so hopefully he makes Ronan menacing
charlie2094 - 6/6/2014, 12:54 PM
Good! Not every villain needs to be surrounded by a sob story, look at the villain most widely considered to be the best we've ever had on film...

Hopefully he doesn't get killed off! Be disappointed if they do that, be good to have him stick around a bit
ezio619 - 6/6/2014, 12:54 PM
reasonnnn-yeah me too..

Pasto - 6/6/2014, 12:55 PM
No, they should keep it simple and not make the film.
MexicanSexyman - 6/6/2014, 12:59 PM
Why can't he be evil? There are many people who are evil because that is their nature.
marccampos - 6/6/2014, 1:05 PM
Is just so cool to read this! Yeah! Enough of this "must be relatable" shit... let´s get back to the simple things!

Really like that!
2gold - 6/6/2014, 1:07 PM
I'm glad to hear this. I've grown tired of villains with boo hoo stories that tries to make you understand their evil and see their side. I want just an evil bastard. This new tread of "no one is really evil, they just had a bad life" is getting annoying.
Starfox - 6/6/2014, 1:11 PM
They should make this one next
PsychoticSpaceRaccoon - 6/6/2014, 1:11 PM
There are certain villains that are irredeemable (and I'm not just talking about Ant-Man), like Red Skull. There are certain villains that are complex and sometimes fight alongside the protagonists when it suits them, like Thanos and Loki. And then there are those that are even more complex, who actually transition from villain to hero, who are redeemed. This is Ronan the Accuser. This is Gamora. Hell, even Magneto depending on the day. These are three distinct, yet somewhat overlapping categories, and regardless of how Marvel changes the character for the MCU, it would be nice to keep them straight. /endrant
ezio619 - 6/6/2014, 1:14 PM
ronan isnt exactly relatable imo in the comic, he is a very cool and interesting character and it sounds like that would also be the case in this, but in a different way
Klone - 6/6/2014, 1:15 PM

They seriously made Ronan an evil [frick] didn't they? Ergh.
Gusto - 6/6/2014, 1:15 PM
So, he's like Dina Lohan?
ezio619 - 6/6/2014, 1:19 PM
i do think korath is gonna be the villain out of the three that has the least amount of screentime which would be dissapointing but i think nebula ,out of the villains, may just steal the show
ckal - 6/6/2014, 1:20 PM
CaptainAmerica31 - 6/6/2014, 1:23 PM
He is awesome in Halt and Catchfire, watch that show. Highly recommend it, only saw one episode though
Reasonnnn - 6/6/2014, 1:23 PM
@Starfox YES
Trickwil - 6/6/2014, 1:28 PM
Ronan in the comics isn't even really a villain. He fights for the Kree, he's as much a villain as any soldier for their nation is. The difference is he only cares about Kree. He sees non Kree the way I see animals. For eating only.
CoolantTech72 - 6/6/2014, 1:28 PM
Yes gotten tired of that sympathetic villian crap, one of the best villians ever in a cbm was all out evil (Joker) im so sick of these villians that you have to relate to, the spider-man villians mainly, we just need another real bad guy for a change.
Phronesis - 6/6/2014, 1:29 PM
Evil is such a generic word when trying to describe a villain.
Phronesis - 6/6/2014, 1:30 PM
I like the "religious-bent" idea but I hope there's more to him than just being evil for the sake of it.
Irvin88 - 6/6/2014, 1:31 PM
Wonder what the post credit scene is? Or what it involves. Can't wait to see this film.
marccampos - 6/6/2014, 1:33 PM
@2gold Yeah!!!!
repulse93 - 6/6/2014, 1:34 PM
I'm not excited about how they're portraying Ronan. In the comics, he was a loyal member of the Kree Empire, and by the time of Annihilation he became a somewhat more heroic figure, ultimately help the heroes of Cosmic Marvel fight the forces of Annihilus, Vulcan, Ultron, and the Cancerverse.

To see him twisted into a pure evil being does not give me hopes for GotG, and makes me wish they'd gotten DnA to write the script.
ezio619 - 6/6/2014, 1:37 PM
so it seems ronan is driven by code of being strong and being spirtually driven..thats interesting
yossarian - 6/6/2014, 1:39 PM
If an alien badass isn't bringing me messages about how bullying is a problem then the entire space opera is lost on me.
dethpillow - 6/6/2014, 1:40 PM
it'd be interesting if we could understand what evil means to each other.
DeusExSponge - 6/6/2014, 1:42 PM
Starfox - I would love to see the Annihilators on the big screen! Just that we don't have Silver Surfer and I think Gladiators rights are over at Fox due to him and the Shiar being connected to the X-Men. Although I hope I'm wrong with the latter and that we get to see Gladiator wreck things up in the MCU.
thunderforce - 6/6/2014, 1:42 PM
This is going to be so awesome .
MercwithMouth - 6/6/2014, 1:42 PM
Sounds very awesome.
thunderforce - 6/6/2014, 1:43 PM
We need the Surfer but if you had to you could replace Gladiator with Sentry or Hyperion .
FastFlames - 6/6/2014, 1:46 PM
Haha dickies
Gusto - 6/6/2014, 1:46 PM

I was hoping for a hard-hitting message
on the dangers of texting and driving.
