Showcasing progress on the big space epic, Marvel Studios has reportedly hired a "three-Time black list" scribe to rewrite the original draft for Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Check it out

After last month's Comic-Con announcement that Guardians of the Guardians will expand the 2nd Phase of Marvel's cinematic universe, recent reports showcase progress leading up to its 2014 release, exactly two years from now. The studio has hired a new scribe to come aboard & rewrite the first draft penned by Nicole Periman.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Christopher McCoy, who has three scripts on a survey of top motion picture screenplays not yet produced, known as The Black List, will pen the Guardians of the Galaxy rewrite.

Despite three of McCoy's screenplays landing on The Black List - Get Back, Good Looking and Good Kids - Disney recently purchased another pitch from him involving a high-concept romantic comedy. Anyhow, THR further suggests that McCoy has been praised for having a "quirky comedic" element in his scripts. What do you think?

Marvel Studios has dubbed “Guardians of the Galaxy” a “big space epic” that will introduce various cosmic entities from the Marvel Comics universe. The superhero team first appeared in “Marvel Super-Heroes #18” in 1969, created by Arnold Drake & Gene Colan. In 2008, the team was rebooted by Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning in “Guardians of the Galaxy (vol. 2) #1.” The team's live-action roster will include Star-Lord, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot. And also Thanos, the villain who made his live-action debut unexpectedly during Marvel's The Avengers mid-credits stinger, is expected to reprise his role. With no director yet attached, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures has scheduled “Guardians of the Galaxy” for release on August 1, 2014.

I have a good feeling about this one... I think this is gonna be the 'space epic' that hardcore sci-fi fans are waiting for.

Light years beyond green lantern, and I've never read a 'guardians' story.

Is any character an earthling? Or are they all aliens?
DaenerysTargaryen - 8/2/2012, 5:23 PM
never heard of him
ajrmarvel - 8/2/2012, 5:39 PM
@xfan320 Star Lord and Drax the destroyer are earthings, the others from the concept art are from alien worlds.
ManofSteel23 - 8/2/2012, 5:46 PM

Rewrites don't always mean start from scratch. Most of the time its too polish a script with a second or third opinion.
novaprime - 8/2/2012, 6:05 PM
i hope this movies insane but im not shore about this mans written work never heard of him... i hope its like STAR TREK MEETS STAR WARS,.. OR STAR SHIP TROOPERS MEETS START TREK

I'm sensing a very Pixar attitude to this film. The characters just seem like a lot of fun.
SmellofDuty - 8/2/2012, 6:08 PM
Should've just got Whedon.
JDUKE25 - 8/2/2012, 6:13 PM
Still gotta find some time to learn about these guys.
sexfoodcomics - 8/2/2012, 6:14 PM
Quirky comedic. Maybe they brought him in to rewrite rocket raccoon's scenes.
ThePowerCosmic - 8/2/2012, 6:14 PM
People seem to be nervous about Rocket Raccoon, but I think Marvel is trying to make this their Star Wars. Nobody has a problem with Chewy...right?

I have faith this will be awesome!
sexfoodcomics - 8/2/2012, 6:17 PM
This will be interesting cause it will be marvels first movie with a female super hero. ( Blakc widow didn't have super powers)
OriginalGuardiansPlease - 8/2/2012, 6:24 PM
god i hope they had starhawk or any of the original members...hell i would even take charlie-27 and he was my least favorite of the originals.

at least have them fight on a planet full or centaurians (Yondu's race)

like the guardians:
TayDee - 8/2/2012, 6:34 PM
Can't wait for casting announcements
TheGambitFreak - 8/2/2012, 6:35 PM
That's cool. I hope, and call me close-minded or a fanboy, but the Director or one of the writers should have Joss Whedon fill in a couple of the battles, just imagine a variant of Serenity's BIG ASS SPACE BATTLES in a Marvel film...

IIIAdamantiumIII - 8/2/2012, 6:46 PM
I'm with Grif on this one, feels so weird :S
superotherside - 8/2/2012, 6:50 PM

ScarSpeedster - 8/2/2012, 7:05 PM
This could be the star wars of this generation. (the star wars we recently got wasn't star wars)
SageMode - 8/2/2012, 7:13 PM
Bring it....

sikwon - 8/2/2012, 7:17 PM
im not ready to put it in star wars class, and from everything ive read about this team there is a comic presence. i agree that dude was probably brought in to clean up the dialogue a bit. marvel is doing something special and they are doing it right. best case scenerio (mind you i AM NOT a fantastic four fan) but sony dosent get started on production for a new ff movie in time and it reverts to marvel. i promise you that regardless of continuity, of anything that marvel has going on, the could fit the ff into their universe with almost zero effort and then it would be epic beyond words. unless some how they snuck an x-man or 10 into the mcu. that would be a wrap on epicness. guardians is going to be fantastic.
marvel72 - 8/2/2012, 7:26 PM
if done right this gonna be one the best films from marvel basically the avengers in space.

can't f*ckin wait.
RamonSuarez - 8/2/2012, 7:36 PM
WTF is Marvel doing? Why does it need to make its films comedic all the time? Ugh.
JerBear - 8/2/2012, 7:44 PM
Have you even read the comics?
GoILL - 8/2/2012, 7:48 PM
Other than Rocket Raccoon I don't know shit about these characters.
rockerdude22 - 8/2/2012, 7:49 PM
Recently started reading the comics, and I absolutely love them! Can't wait for the movie!
RamonSuarez - 8/2/2012, 7:52 PM
Which comics?
SFCamerica - 8/2/2012, 8:34 PM
Can't believe I'm saying this, but GotG doesn't interest me at all. I know little about them. Have to say that a character called Rocket Raccoon sounds very stupid. But, it's Marvel, I'm sure I'll like it.
masterhater - 8/2/2012, 8:41 PM
This guy seems Lame.
Genaro - 8/2/2012, 8:55 PM
Are starfox and Thanos Brothers im sure they are?
TheAbomination - 8/2/2012, 9:27 PM
Definitely gonna be first in line to see this.
RamonSuarez - 8/2/2012, 9:45 PM
Ridiculous. Whedon isn't a comic writer. The Farelly Brothers, Mike Landis, Woody Allen, Jud Apatow, etc. are comedy writers. Whedon is a writer who uses comedy. The difference is clear.

And no, I don't have issues with what Whedon did in the Avengers. I have issues with making every movie the same boilerplate comedy fest. Its bad enough that the Russo Brothers were hired for Captain America. Now they want to lighten up a movie that should be taken seriously or else it can become cheese.
LAXtremest - 8/2/2012, 10:33 PM
If we get Warlock in this I'm gonna lose my shit
o6untouchable - 8/2/2012, 11:14 PM
Just because they're bringing in a writer known for having a "comedic quality" in his scripts doesn't mean they're making a comedy. Also, having another writer work on the script doesn't mean they're throwing the old one out the window.

My guess would be that the original writer cooked up an absolutely awesome plot (which is what they got excited about), but that they're bringing in someone to help add a few Whedon style comedy sprinkles to the story, off the back of Avengers' success.

One of the great things about the Avengers was that it managed to get laughs right in the middle of dramatic action scenes, without ruining it. That slightly lighter tone is what sets Marvel movies apart from DC movies, and I think they'll be keen to monopolise on that.
o6untouchable - 8/2/2012, 11:16 PM
@Ramon Read the article again. It says his scripts have a comedic element, not that he himself is a comedy writer. I think you're arguing with your own misinterpretation of the article.
weaponx123 - 8/2/2012, 11:27 PM
It's gonna be The Expendables in space!
AmahlFarouk - 8/3/2012, 12:21 AM
It's been like 6 years and I still haven't warmed to the new Drax. I really hope McCoy makes him more stand-out and unique rather than the redundantly derivative proud warrior stock character he's become in the comics.
mikesinuman - 8/3/2012, 12:54 AM
what ever MARVEL will do next will be a hit, just put, from the makers of AVENGERS.
