Steve McNiven Has Been "Tossing Design Ideas Around" With Marvel Studios For GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

Steve McNiven has redesigned the Guardians of the Galaxy for a new "Marvel NOW!" series and reveals here he has talked with Marvel Studios about creating some unity between the movie and comic.

The Guardians of the Galaxy concept art unveiled at this year's San Diego Comic Con featured costume designs which closely resembled the well-known look of the team in the Marvel Universe. However, next February's "Marvel NOW!" comic book series by All-New X-Men writer Brian Michael Bendis features a complete redesign of each of the characters by artist Steve McNiven. "I'm trying to re-design the whole team here," the writer said of his approach to redesigning the team in a recent interview with Newsarama. "My approach to the designs was to match them to the characters and to update the look. Double-breasted jackets and outer space adventure don't really fit these days." A lot of "Marvel NOW!" has seen the comic book costumes receive looks which are a little closer to the of the movies, and it appears as if there will be SOME similarities between the designs in this series and James Gunn's big screen adaptation. "I have been in touch with the movie studio guys and we are all tossing design ideas around, so hopefully we can have some unity between the movie and comic looks."

As long as they keep Star-Lord's mask/helmet design exactly the way it's been in the comics, I'm ok with changes.
jimpinto24 - 11/16/2012, 6:42 PM
I agree with @JerBear. As long as they keep the look for Star-Lord, I'm cool with costume changes for GOTG.
marvel72 - 11/16/2012, 6:43 PM
steve mcniven is a great artist.when does the guardians of the galaxy comic book get released?

as for the movie,i want them to keep the mask on starlord but if he doesn't have it in the new series he may not have it in the movie.
sexfoodcomics - 11/16/2012, 6:51 PM
Nooooooooo that concept art is amazing. Don't F with it. I don't want a futuristic looking suit on starlord. That's been done to death. Go old school like Han Solo and Malcolm Reynolds. That's pretty much starlords character anyway.
Moakynubs - 11/16/2012, 6:54 PM
I loved the old uniforms.. Star Lord needs his helmet back.
kaput - 11/16/2012, 6:58 PM
It's a raccoon and a fighting houseplant, this thing is going to blow!!
Funsize - 11/16/2012, 6:59 PM
Ugh just stay with the concept art !!! I wonder if they ever look at peoples comments for approval. It would be a good idea, epecially with this.
luffycapri - 11/16/2012, 7:01 PM
Please stick with the concept art.
ADomenick91092 - 11/16/2012, 7:11 PM
I will never understand the redesigns so many characters get when pretty much every fan in the world wants them to stay the same. >.<
mk - 11/16/2012, 7:43 PM
No mask = no go
souhunter - 11/16/2012, 7:56 PM
Marvel don't you [frick] this up,if u do I won't be your friend anymore.
HAILHYDRA - 11/16/2012, 8:05 PM
I hate that comicbook art. The concept art is awesome
repulse93 - 11/16/2012, 8:28 PM
I'm not going to hate on Bendis & McNiven's GOTG just yet, I haven't read the book, so for all I know, it'll blow DnA's run out of the water.

...That said, I'd be talking with Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning more than Steve McNiven. He and Bendis might be the current creative team on the series, but it was DnA who launched the Guardians into epicness back in 2008.
DrDoom - 11/16/2012, 8:32 PM
No way. Keep the movies to movies, and the comics to the comics.
repulse93 - 11/16/2012, 8:37 PM
@Derpina - I thought Groot always looked like a tree to a degree, maybe those lights are grenades?
repulse93 - 11/16/2012, 8:41 PM
...err, just because McNiven is giving his ideas, doesn't mean that the costumes will change completely. Hell, it'll probably be an amalgamation with the costumes being a mix of the classic and modern looks.

And for all the arguments about costume looks, I think I'll overlook any costume liberties if everyone remains in-character.
evilness - 11/16/2012, 8:50 PM
shut the [frick] up.
you both have nearly nothing to go on.

your argument is about a couple of years premature.
KaneVonDoom - 11/16/2012, 8:54 PM
The Concept art was excellent... I hope they stick with it or maybe even a little closer to the last uniforms.
FirstAvenger - 11/16/2012, 8:54 PM
Okay marvel I trust you... I think.
Nivekian - 11/16/2012, 8:56 PM
I hope someone at least talks to Dwayne Johnson about playing Drax.
OdinsBeard - 11/16/2012, 9:01 PM
that concept art is perfect... how are you not going to use that?
repulse93 - 11/16/2012, 9:05 PM
Weirdly, outside splitting Clint and Bobbi, as well as not explaining how Jessica Drew got her powers back, what I read of Bendis's run on Avengers wasn't that bad.

That said, I've been on hiatus from comics outside internet check-ups since shortly before Fear Itself, so I could be very off.

...Still wondering how the hell Star-Lord came back though.
repulse93 - 11/16/2012, 9:12 PM
...wait, now that I think about it, I believe he was going to explain in his Spider-Woman ongoing series... which got ended in conjunction with the motion comic.

... no wonder he's glaring.
mawilli4 - 11/16/2012, 9:14 PM
[frick] this guy. don't change the uniforms were perfect. they symbolized a TEAM. not a rag-tag group like the Avengers.
repulse93 - 11/16/2012, 9:17 PM
I would think the Avengers are as much a team as the Guardians.
...And while it'd be awesome to see the Guardians in their iconic uniforms on the big screen, as long as they all remain in-character, and we can recognize them, I'll let it slide.
superotherside - 11/16/2012, 9:20 PM
As long as they keep Star Lords iconic mask, I'm ok with it. Although they should keep something blue or what ever to pay tribute to the original costumes. Also the new ones look horrible especially Star Lord's.
ChromeToaster - 11/16/2012, 10:51 PM
Nnoooo!! Those costumes are crap compared to the others!
2gold - 11/16/2012, 11:03 PM
The original concept art was pretty solid but I'll see what input he offers. Maybe they can find a balance between the two, give it a slight update while keeping Star Lord and Drax looking cool.
FireKnightRises - 11/17/2012, 12:56 AM
maybe Iron Man will cameo in GOTG movie and Disney will make this as kid friendly as possible
laughterman26 - 11/17/2012, 2:22 AM
wait so does this mean the costume by ryan meindering, thats what we are getting for cap 2. awesome
siggisuperman - 11/17/2012, 3:34 AM
I am a little disappointed because I always loved the Guardians wearing the double breasted jackets, made them look like honorable old fashioned soldiers in an extravagant cosmic world.
Fogs - 11/17/2012, 3:44 AM
Not digging the comic cover. I want them to use the previously presented design
DukeAcureds - 11/17/2012, 5:51 AM
Yeah, I like the idea of having this kind of artistic unity, but I love the double-breasted space outfits more. Who the Hell is he to decide what is good in this day and age. They don't really fit these days? Of couse they do! They're awesome! They might not be seen much in the movies, but that's why trends get set. Get these double-breasted jackets in the movie and then they'll set the gorram trend!
sameoldthing - 11/17/2012, 5:59 AM
HalloweenJack is a closet homosexual, hes entitled to his opinion but cries when someone disagrees with him.

Calling others "faggots" is a big clue to his hidden sexuality, that is unless he openly cross dresses & sleeps with Steve McNiven.

Steve is good artist I will admit.
Shadowelfz - 11/17/2012, 6:06 AM
HalloweenJack is Intruder. If he keeps up with the insults he will get banned again.

Iron Man really shouldnt be in GOTG. This should be a space thing only. Iron Man is like Marvels new Wolverine; he's popular so they throw him in everything they can.

I dont know what to think about this movie. While the idea is intriguing and I wouldnt mind seeing it the fact they passed over Black Panther doesnt bode well. Well have to see...
MiracleMe - 11/17/2012, 6:07 AM
"Double-breasted jackets and outer space adventure don't really fit these days"?!? WTF is he saying? Is the idea to make the GotG able to visually 'blend' with the Avengers? If so, frack that! The D-B jackets are cool. Why take what's unique, cool, strikingly different and homogenize it? I hope they don't screw this up.

And I hope I at least HEAR the name VANCE ASTRO 'cause it sounds so cool.
MisterNiceGuy - 11/17/2012, 8:34 AM
I love the GOTG articles bc it makes it so easy to spot out the poser fans and the true CB fans. GOTG is more than a "talking houseplant" or "[frick]ing raccoon". [frick] the haters that wont even give this move a chance. As far as the article goes. Please no matching suits.... I have a feeling that is what is going to happen.
DukeAcureds - 11/17/2012, 9:53 AM
wearethewalkingdead9@ Your the worst kind of troll. At least classic trolls get the shit and the passion flying.
Just advertise if you're going to advertise, don't pander to us by making a bullshit comment about the article. McNiven isn't directing, y'know. James Gunn is. But well done on finding out that he's one of the best and mst talented artists working for Marvel. Good job. Troll.
genesis609 - 11/17/2012, 10:24 AM
DRAX should be that guy who played konan and the guy from game of thrones. he would be perfect
80sFace - 11/17/2012, 10:30 AM
Much prefer the concept art to the "new" look. But there's plenty of time between now and when they start filming to figure out the right look.
