I think GOTG wrapped my theater going for the year. It was a fine year for me.
Grand Budapest Hotel

I don't think there is anything else I will see in the theater this year.

Not my review...but a good one I agree with:

"I'm speechless, gob smacked even. For the first time in a very long time I have absolutely nothing bad to say about a film. I fashion myself a pseudo comic book snob. Heck I even had nitpicks with Captain America: The Winter Soldiers and I thought that was a Top 5 Comic Book film. To be fair, unlike the recent string of Marvel and DC comic book films I am not familiar with the source material that Guardians is based on and merely a general cursory understanding of the Marvel Cosmic Universe. This handicap forced me to go into this film without any biasness and fresh, doe eyes. Guardians of the Galaxy is as GOOD as The Avengers.

Was it formulaic? Yes. Did it get a bit clichéd? Of course! But sometimes telling the predictable story is what's best for business. It's not how you tell it but what you tell. And James Gunn and Nicole Pearlman put together a tightly, cohesive script with few plots holes that I stopped looking for Cinema Sins three minutes into the film. If seeing Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse's name instantly tells me a film or television series is not worth investing my energies to watch, than see Gunn and Pearlman's name will immediately make me want to see their finished product. The casting was near perfect and continues Marvel's string of hiring relatively unproven B-C level actors to build franchises around. I'm not a big fan of Zoe Saldana and find her emotional scenes to be laughable at best, but she owns Gamora. Dave Bautista, a marginal at best actor on RAW kills it as Drax and Bradley Cooper's Rocket will be this generation's Buzz Lightyear, the beloved sidekick that kids love. It helps that I totally did not recognize Bradley Cooper's voice allowing me not to get distracted listening to who was playing Rocket. If Guardians was meant to be Marvel's Star Wars than Chris Pratt makes an even better Luke Skywalker to this film than Mark Hammill –based on acting chops. He already owns Star-Lord after one film and was nearly as much of a star making performance as Downey's Tony Stark in the first Iron Man.

Whoever greenlit this movie deserves a huge bonus. There's no reason this should do less than $250 million box office. Kids audience? Check. Teenagers looking to get out of the house? Check. 18-49 year olds looking for a late summer popcorn flick? Check. Sci-fi fanboys? Check. James Gunn just put J.J. Abrams on notice and showed George Lucas how to do a proper space opera film, heck, dare I say, a Star Wars film. In the words of Billy from Purple Rain, "Marvel is squeezing you [J.J.], you better kick ass [on Star Wars] or else."

Gaurdians and Cap:TWS are defeantly two of Marvel's best, but they are suuuuuch different films it can be hard to compare.

dapussy - 8/5/2014, 9:04 AM
Phase two has redifined cinema. IM3 blew me away. Thor2 nailed how a Thor movie should be tho slightly flawed. Cap floored me. absolutly nailed the character and had the best h2h in a cbm ever. GotG was blockbuster, cult hit. amazing. Avengers2 is gonna destroy everthing before it.

huexolotl - 8/5/2014, 9:51 AM
I agree dapussy, they just keep getting better. At this rate AOU is just going to demolish everything. I can see it knocking Avatar and Titanic from the highest grossing films ever.

Sorry for the newbie question, but I would LOVE to subscribe to this podcast, but don't have iTunes on my Kindle Fire (where I listen to all of my podcasts). Is there a OPML file I could use for that purpose? Or does anyone know of any other way to subscribe on a Kindle Fire?
