What Is The "Merging Of Brands" And Who Is Vin Diesel Playing For Marvel In 2016?

A few days ago, a video interview was posted here on CBM featuring Vin Diesel revealing the fact that he will indeed be voicing Groot, appearing in one of their 2016 untitled projects AND a "Merging of Brands" for Marvel Studios in the future. Just what exactly does this all mean?!

When Fast & Furious and Riddick star Vin Diesel revealed that he would be starring in a Marvel Studios movie at this year's San Diego Comic-Con, speculation was soon running rampant. Would he be Thanos? The Vision? Black Panther?! (I still don't get that one...) Well, it was later revealed that he will be voicing Groot in James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy. However, he recently let slip some HUGE details about the future of Marvel's Cinematic Universe. Let's take a closer look at some of those comments from that lengthy video interview mentioned above.

"When I met with Marvel it wasn’t for anything immediate, it was to talk about a film that would be introduced in the Phase 3 part of Marvel, not for a few years. You wouldn’t be able to see it for a few years. In my mind, Marvel were doing it right, they were enrolling me at the ground level which is the best way to enrol me.

The next Monday, Marvel talks to me and says “We’re going to send something over in two weeks. We want to focus on the 2016 but we also want to, if possible, answer this growing request for something now.” I don’t have six months to play a character in the immediate future, it’s all booked… there was no way I was going to be able to deliver… after Comic-Con, we were at a stalemate..."

So, as we've already heard, Marvel Studios wanted Vin Diesel for one of their two 2016 movies. There's nothing to say they want him for a leading role in a new franchise like Daredevil or Doctor Strange, but if it's not that, then it must be for another of their characters; perhaps a supporting or villainous role in a sequel to November's Thor: The Dark World or next year's Captain America: The Winter Soldier? As of right now, it sounds as if he WILL still be doing that project in three years time, and voicing Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy is simply a way of giving in to fan demand and keeping Diesel "in the family" until then. Or, as he puts it, "enrolling me at the ground".

"I get the call, I go down to Marvel. A great meeting. It was even talking about something so big I can’t even talk about because it’s like the merging of brands in a way, which I won’t get into. That was something way, way, way, way, way down the road."

Now this is interesting. Assuming that a third instalment of The Avengers is released in 2018, we will by that point be seeing "Phase 3" come to an end. Robert Downey Jr.'s contract will be over, as will Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Evans and a few others'. Will any of them want to resign after spending close to a decade in Marvel's movies? Whether this leads to a series of reboots or the actors being replaced in a James Bond type of casting trickery is a discussion for another day. More importantly, what is this "merging of brands"? With Ultron taking the stage in The Avengers: Age of Ultron, it seems fair to say that we'll see Thanos as the main villain in the follow-up to that. That could potentially mean that the movie will feature Earth's Mightiest Heroes AND the Guardians of the Galaxy, resulting in a huge climax to "Phase 3". After all, with Vin Diesel providing the voice of Groot, it makes sense they would talk about when he would be expected to return...

What do you guys think?

Is Riddick coming to the MCU?
THORGodOfThunder - 9/7/2013, 6:31 AM
Maybe he's talking about GOTG merging with The Avengers? Not really a merging of brands since they are both Marvel but still

The Vision I'd imagine. While also reprising his role in GOTG 2 & The Avengers 3.

Vin Diesel trolling us fans

"Merging of Brands"...I would like to think that means Marvel is working out a deal with Sony/Fox to bring Spiderman and or X-Men properties together for a big movie. Fans have asked for it for so long, and that would be a huge cash cow movie for them. Here's hoping!
Jazza815 - 9/7/2013, 6:35 AM
I wonder if we'll ever see The Defenders on screen.
ManDeth - 9/7/2013, 6:37 AM
He's talking about the XXX Avengers meeting the Avengers. And soon the XXX GOTG will be involved with the GOTG.
Bearjew - 9/7/2013, 6:41 AM
I was hoping for a silver surfer movie within the MCU. Maybe he means Namor but I hope not, he'd suck as Namor and could actually bring presence to the surfer. I could see him as Black Bolt though.
Bearjew - 9/7/2013, 6:42 AM
Probably talked to him about Thanos though
ekrolo2 - 9/7/2013, 6:44 AM
Thats what I thought.

Marvel/Sony/Fox MCU
tacobender - 9/7/2013, 6:47 AM
I think it's Namor. Because of the his close relationship with Universal and their ownership of the movie rights to that character. Which would be weird, I can't see him with hair

MayBe Marvel Knights He Could Be Playing Daredevil

At this point "merging of the brands" is just some euphemism said by Vinny D in an interview (I always imagine a kid pulling out a mini Vin Diesel out of the fridge saying "Awesome, Vinny D" when I use that nick name. Anyways...). It's unlikely that it refers to anything so grandiose as studios getting together. If it means anything at all (and I don't think it does) it probably just means characters showing up in each other's movies at some point.
ROMsnotdead - 9/7/2013, 6:51 AM
not sophisticated and talented enough to play vision!
Marvel studios are usually pretty good at casting, si i'm not too worried about him. Some villain probably. Vision being an A.I, i wouldn't mind if he were CGI
CorndogBurglar - 9/7/2013, 6:53 AM

Vin Diesel as Daredevil would be the worst casting in the history of all that is.
csdot - 9/7/2013, 6:54 AM
Dormammu in Dr Strange
Ace101 - 9/7/2013, 6:57 AM
Im really curious as to which character he will portray in phase 3.
JediPhilosopher - 9/7/2013, 6:59 AM
We can't have it all. I do wish we could. Spider-Man should be in the MCU. So should Xavier and Wolverine. It just sucks. Maybe when they reboot the MCU. :D
Copyright laws deny creativity and free speech. And they're enforced by government. Awesome?
Ace101 - 9/7/2013, 6:59 AM
Anyways can anyone ask vin for details on the nova suits from the concept art book he recieved.
StrangerX - 9/7/2013, 7:00 AM
I don't think it means gotg merging because the role is for 2016 and they weren't necessarily looking for him to play groot in the beginning. That role came after.

Namor makes more sense

Merging of brands? My thoughts are either Riddick coming to the MCU somehow (maybe through a Guardians of the Galaxy sequel?), or if they were going to merge the MCU and Fox Studios (Spider-man, X-Men, etc.), Vin could be a great choice for Apocalypse. Apocalypse could present a villain strong enough to require the efforts of a larger group.
IM53 - 9/7/2013, 7:06 AM
Is Sony, fox, and marvel coming together for a 600 million dollar budget to give us the ultimate marvel movie. Infinity gauntlet ?
CherryBomb - 9/7/2013, 7:06 AM
His voice is too distinct to play two separate characters.
He'd be awesome as Vision.

I'd love him to appear as Wonder Man early in the movie.
Then have Ultron kill him and use his brain and voice in "Vision".

He has the body to play Wonder Man and the voice that could bring Vision to life.
deamon - 9/7/2013, 7:07 AM
He's talking wood.

Vin Diesel...who cares! He doesn't give a crap about CB movies, just a paycheck!
superotherside - 9/7/2013, 7:11 AM
That's what I've said, he's playing someone else besides Groot.
marvel72 - 9/7/2013, 7:13 AM
merging of brands could be one of many things.

1. marvel studios/fox/sony

2. the avengers/guardians of the galaxy

3. hulk/dr.strange/namor = the defenders

4. guardians of the galaxy/the inhumans/nova/quaser/captain mar-vell

5. marvel knights daredevil/punisher/moon knight/heroes for hire/blade
SpiderParker - 9/7/2013, 7:15 AM
I just knew it, it was just not possible that Marvel will pick up two popular actors just for voice work. I guess Vin is in talk to play a Villain and Bradley Cooper for a Superhero. Maybe he is talking about a Spider-Man & Avengers crossover.

OR, they can always go the alternate reality way and show X-Men vs Avengers with Spidey! *drooling*

LEVITIKUZ - 9/7/2013, 7:16 AM
Iron Giant will be in the MCU.
Joeybagadoughnuts - 9/7/2013, 7:17 AM
When I think of Brands, I think of Marvel and DC, I know this won't happen but if the comic book movies start to lose its momentum it might.

Avengers and sliver .suffer with Galactus and Thanos?
LEVITIKUZ - 9/7/2013, 7:17 AM
There won't be an Avengers/Spidey/X-Men crossover.

Don't make me smack you guys.
Joeybagadoughnuts - 9/7/2013, 7:18 AM
Typo: Silver Surfer
