Bruce Campbell Talks EVIL DEAD Remake; Says It's "Fabulous"

The actor (who plays Ash in Sam Raimi's The Evil Dead) discusses the upcoming horror remake, its differences from the previous movies, whether or not he'll make a cameo and more. He also reveals that he's already seen the Fede Alvarez-directed film.

Speaking with Digital Spy, actor Bruce Campbell - who previously played 'Ash' in Sam Raimi's horror film The Evil Dead - discusses the upcoming remake. He reveals some interesting new info, such as the facts that none of the original characters from the 1981 film and that this will be a completely fresh take on the franchise. He also addresses fans' complaints/worries surrounding the remake, saying that it'll be "just as memorable" as Raimi's original film. Campbell also reveals that he's seen a cut of the Fede Alvarez-directed movie (which recently wrapped production), saying that it's "fabulous". For the full interview (in which Campbellshares his thoughts on the current trend for reboots/remakes and re-uniting with Raimi in Oz: The Great And Powerful), click the link below.

On How Different Evil Dead Is To The Previous Movies:
"There's none of the original characters. We didn't want to compare apples with apples. It's a contemporary movie - just like Evil Dead was contemporary in 1979, this is contemporary for young adults now. It's basically five new kids who are going to have a really bad night with a brand new director - Fede Alvarez, who was handpicked by Sam Raimi. I've seen it already; I think it's definitely fabulous."

On Whether Or Not Fans Will Embrace The Remake:
"We're really excited and really behind it, [but] it's going to take a bit to get the Evil Dead fans behind it. We know we've pissed a lot of them off. We appreciate that and we appreciate their anger and their zeal, but the only thing we want to impress upon them is that we didn't screw it up. This is going to be just as memorable as [the original] Evil Dead without being the same movie.

"You don't want to remake something shot-for-shot. I can't believe they remade Psycho - what the hell kind of a waste of celluloid is that? It's a creative medium.

"The nice thing is the film looks beautiful. The effects are 10 times better than we ever had access to and the actors are all better than we were in 1979. Though granted Sam Raimi is a mad genius, so we got a crazy result like Evil Dead out of this amateur enthusiasm sort of thing."

On Whether Or Not He'll Make A Cameo, And His Thoughts On Playing Ash Again:
"I'm not at liberty to discuss that. But the thing is we want it to be a standalone movie. You're going to have some references [to the original] in there and there's going to be things the fans will enjoy as far as familiar aspects, but it's a whole new ball game."

"I'll be honest with you, I don't know if I could - the last one was 1991. I was a virile young man; I'm 54 years old now so I'm not sure 54-year-old guys need to be doing that s**t anymore. But if Sam wants to lace the boots back on and do something that makes sense, that's fine. We may need to do the movie one day, if our careers fly off the tracks and we crash and burn, we might look at each other and go 'Let's make an Evil Dead movie'!"

Evil Dead is set to hit theaters April 12th, 2013. The remake stars Jane Levy, Jessica Lucas, Shiloh Fernandez, Elizabeth Blackmore and Lou Taylor Pucci.

thebamf - 8/20/2012, 1:56 PM
Holy shit. I just checked "CBM's Hall of Shame". Lol! There are a lot of victims. Apparently I missed the drama.

RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 8/20/2012, 1:57 PM
I just saw that too shawnb. I will say the majority of them deserved to be banned. I'm glad they are cleaning this site up.

Damn ghostfire. Gallactus ain't messing around! I love debating on this site and sometimes it gets heated, but yeah that Nolanite, Marvelite BS was making me not want to come on this site for awhile.
NerdyGeek - 8/20/2012, 2:01 PM
Yep, the petty war was destroying this site... glad everything is peaceful now...
thebamf - 8/20/2012, 2:05 PM
I agree. That whole "ite" stuff was getting old. Glad to see the big "G" is cracking down.
Deadshot - 8/20/2012, 2:05 PM
No Ash on the screen, no ass in a theater seat.
GreenHalJordan - 8/20/2012, 2:06 PM
Bruce Campbell is amazing! Nuff said!
AnotherSinisterClone - 8/20/2012, 2:07 PM
"what we got here is a Bubba Ho-Tep". Yea hes not an oscer winning actor, but good at knowing what he can and can't pull off.
thebamf - 8/20/2012, 2:09 PM

TwiztidThorn - 8/20/2012, 2:14 PM
Bruce Campbell for president of the world.
jessepostal - 8/20/2012, 2:15 PM
@irish, how did i insult him? he knows he's a terrible actor, that doesn't change the fact he's great
Ghostfire - 8/20/2012, 2:17 PM
I know pal. You and I have had some good discussion, by then to be interrupted by those "wars". Hopefully it'll stay like this for awhile, so that we, all of us, who enjoy coming here can have healthy debates.
InfiniteMonkey - 8/20/2012, 2:18 PM
This guy should run for president of Kickass Actors who don't Get Enough Screentime because Hollywood is a Pussy Club.

He's wasting away. Do love BURN NOTICE though.
KaneVonDoom - 8/20/2012, 2:22 PM
Good job Galactus!

I'm not stoked for this Evil Dead movie but I'm definitely interested in it. We'll see...
PapaEmeritus - 8/20/2012, 2:24 PM
Campbell is the man! I'll take his words as a vow of trust, but "just as memorable as Raimi's original film." is a bit too much!

That marvelite x nolanite shit was stupid and boring as hell... CBM is way better this way.
dollstix - 8/20/2012, 2:29 PM
And so I sit here typing away and realising that a whole new audience will probably never have seen the original on the dodgy VHS copies we had and being scared witless and quoting dialogue and having nightmares.
The hammer of time will come down and I'm faced with the ultimate truth that dammit, I got old !!!
I tried to shop Smart ..Shop S-Mart ...I really really did!
HULK2099 - 8/20/2012, 2:30 PM
Well if Bruce approves than it must be good I hope, it would be confusing if they do evil dead 4 right after this remake for the people who don't know the series.
HULK2099 - 8/20/2012, 2:31 PM
They should make ash save them at the end which would lead to a evil dead 4
fedup - 8/20/2012, 2:33 PM
@dollstix, I assure you there are still plenty of us who only recently discovered Evil Dead (by recently I mean within the last few years) and did so by crappy VHS (though it did help that my family used to own a video store, lol). Will say I love it on bluray, though. I'm definitely giving the remake a chance, especially if it carries the Large Chinned One's seal of approval.

On another note, thanks to Galactus for cleaning up the site. The flame wars had me considering leaving the site, but it looks like I'll stay right where I am.
SHHH - 8/20/2012, 2:36 PM
Thanks Big G.. Gettin Rid Of Nolan Vs Marvel...
IIIAdamantiumIII - 8/20/2012, 2:46 PM
pffffffft I've seen better acting in porn
marantaz - 8/20/2012, 2:53 PM
Bruce is great, best thing about Burn Notice, but he's being used here to get Evil Dead fans to see this new version. Don't know if that's going to work. I'll wait for the DVD myself. Actually, probably order it on pay per view and save the gas.
marantaz - 8/20/2012, 2:53 PM
oh, and no more 'ite' wars? wow. that'll be different.
KnobGoblin - 8/20/2012, 3:31 PM
Campbell is a bigger shill than Stan Lee these days.
BigK1337 - 8/20/2012, 3:41 PM
Always was behind this remake/ reboot (can't decide which title) from the beginning due to it being a new Evil Dead movie. Now that the man, Bruce Cambell, is supporting this film, I have no shame in checking it out.

Also, there was a Marvelite/Nolanite War on this site so big that caused Galactus to put a crackdown on such antics? Wow, I have been off this site for a long time (save for the recent knowledge I received yesterday on James Gunn doing Guardians of the Galaxy).
Still, good idea for the Devourer to take out those clowns; can't make simple statement of liking a movie series better than the other without the opposing movie side coming in starting a flame war.
BigK1337 - 8/20/2012, 3:44 PM

Meh, I'll get sick of them if they decided to remake one more Carpenter movie. Either Escape From New York or Big Trouble in Little China will do it for me.

musashi - 8/20/2012, 3:47 PM
No "ite" wars? What will users talk about for 13 pages?lol

BruceCampbell rocks!
BigK1337 - 8/20/2012, 3:55 PM
We can always do a good ol' fashion Marvel/DC argument . . . Oh wait, over sensitive guys who thought there was no fun in arguing over which universe is better decided to make editorials about how stupid and old that topic is. Yeah, good luck finding a fun page length argument to get behind on. I'm starting to miss the Ite Wars. :'(
Ranger14 - 8/20/2012, 3:55 PM
Bruce doesn't get the credit he deserves for being a good actor. I think most base their opinion on the genre of films he is most known for, Evil Dead, Army of Dead, Bubba Ho Tep, etc. but he played the parts the way they were written. I think he does a great job in Burn Notice, which is outside of his normal type cast.

Yes, it looks like both sides of the feuding lost some of their trolls. Some of the comments that were reported for some individuals were pretty unworthy of reporting, so there must have been other stuff that wasn't reported.

Moonrise Kingdom
The Master
Wreck It Ralph
Cabin in the Woods

C'mon moron. Grow a pair and get off your soapbox. You know for a fact that you'll go see every single remake/ reboot that'll come out. You know for a fact that you're a stupid hypocrite for getting mad at them for remaking Scarface when the 80's Scarface was a remake of a 1930's gangster movie. Stop whining, get off your couch, and wake up from the purgatory that is internet forums. If you were at all intelligent, you'd know that Hollywood's been remaking movie since before Hollywood WAS Hollywood. Heck, Evil Dead 2 is a remake of Evil Dead I. Yet again, stupid hypocrite. Yeah, you heard me.
Geektality - 8/20/2012, 4:08 PM
It's funny how people are whining about this movie when Evil Dead 2 is a f*cking remake of The Evil Dead!!!!
BigK1337 - 8/20/2012, 4:21 PM
Actually, not a lot of people here are whining (unless you mean SOME people, which is pretty funny).

Though to be fair, Evil Dead 2 is a continuation to Evil Dead. It is just that the beginning of the film (first 5 to 10 minutes or so) is essentially an abridged remake to the first movie, and it is like that mostly due to the second film wasn't allowed to use stock footag of the first movie due to crap like movie licensing between the studios.
KnobGoblin - 8/20/2012, 4:39 PM
@Geektality; Once the prologue is over, Evil Dead 2 picks up exactly where Evil Dead left off. With Ash turning around, and the force slamming him into a tree.
mgeoff88 - 8/20/2012, 5:28 PM
I like the fact they're are not using the original characters. I don't want to see a unknown, young actor trying to be the next-gen Ash. There's only one Ash, and that's Bruce Campbell.

It makes me feel like this will be less connected to Sam Raimi's films. Even though technically it's still a reboot/remake.

I'm still not that excited for it though. I would be all over an Evil Dead 4 with Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell though!
thunderforce - 8/20/2012, 6:10 PM
I will check it out on blu .
Tomontherun99 - 8/20/2012, 6:17 PM
Starting to look forward to this the more I hear about it, it really doesn't need the Evil Dead brand on it but I'm hoping for a solid horror more in the vein of the first movie and less of the slapstick of the 2nd and 3rd movies, as much as I love them.
