GHOSTBUSTERS 3 Eyes Early 2015 Shoot, But Without Ivan Reitman Directing

GHOSTBUSTERS 3 Eyes Early 2015 Shoot, But Without Ivan Reitman Directing

Well this is definitely a good news/bad news situation. After the passing of his friend and original Ghostbuster Harold Ramis, director Ivan Reitman has elected to pass on helming the threequel, which will still go into production early next year. More after the jump.

Deadline report that Sony Pictures is eyeing an early 2015 start for its third Ghostbusters movie, but without Ivan Reitman on board as director. Reitman decided to pass on the gig after the death of his close friend Harold Ramis, who was also lined up to reprise the role of Egon Spengler in the film -- but he will apparently help Amy Pascal find a new director, with a shortlist already being looked at. Reitman goes into great detail regarding this decision, and here's an excerpt.

“It’s a version of Ghostbusters that has the originals in a very minor role. When I came back from Harold’s funeral, it was really moving and it made me think about a lot of things. I’d just finished directing Draft Day, which I’m really happy with and proud of. Working on a film that is smaller and more dramatic was so much fun and satisfying. I just finally met with Amy and Doug Belgrad when I got back. I said I’d been thinking about it for weeks, that I’d rather just produce this Ghostbusters. I told them I thought I could help but let’s find a really good director and make it with him. So that’s what we’ve agreed will happen. I didn’t want all kinds of speculation about what happened with me, that is the real story.”

Reitman also says that although he won't comment on how many team members we'll see in the movie, but that they are "determined to retain the spirit of the original film". Much more at the link below.

ManofSteel23 - 3/18/2014, 5:45 PM

This should not be happening.

Ivan Reitman will always be a legend to me for Ghostbusters and Kindergarten Cop alone, and I just watched Stripes for the first time (not sure how I never got around to watching that before, but really liked it). But let's face it. He's not the same as he was. Has he made a good movie in the past 20 years?

Ghostbusters is my favorite movie of all time. I'm all for a soft reboot. If it sucks, it sucks, and oh well. It won't make the original any less awesome, so who cares? I don't get people who are so against reboots and remakes. It doesn't take away from the original. Granted, most remakes aren't very good, but I'm all for taking a shot.
Jobu - 3/18/2014, 5:58 PM
No way Bill Murray touches this turd of a movie
beane2099 - 3/18/2014, 6:01 PM
I really don't see the point of this. I think I'd rather see this remade than sequelized without half the original cast. Either way a good time will be had by few.
beane2099 - 3/18/2014, 6:01 PM
What's next? Taco Bell serving breakfast? ... Oh wait...
WakeOfMagellen - 3/18/2014, 6:03 PM
I'm tasting my breakfast once again :-/
This "project"? Is nothing more than a blatant grab for money.
Nothing more. Nothing less :-P
ShreckGT350 - 3/18/2014, 6:04 PM
Sadly, with Ivan stepping down, Bill flip-flopping, and (most importantly) Harold passing away, there are less people having to give their opinions on how things should go for this third movie. This translates to a better chance of this movie being made no matter how each of us feels. I hope it does get made, that the right cast of newbies are selected, and that Harold is represented with honor. Without Harold and Ivan, there would never have been the Ghostbusters we all grew up with and loved.
Gibman - 3/18/2014, 6:12 PM
Never good get into the Ghostbusters movies. And don't that that it would be a bad thing if he didn't direct. He's the same person that gave us Junior
Gibman - 3/18/2014, 6:14 PM
Damn spellcheck!!
Comedian03 - 3/18/2014, 6:19 PM
I was in the minority of people who actually wanted this movie to be made, and I had hopes for it. But now, after the death of Harold Ramis, and now Reitman not returning, I'm sorry but it's time to just shut this project down for good.

thor2273 - 3/18/2014, 6:21 PM
I call bullshit on this ever happing nor should it without Egon.
LuBeTHiGhWalK3R - 3/18/2014, 6:26 PM
Sucks he isn't directing but I'll still check it out...
Objectivelybiased - 3/18/2014, 6:29 PM
If you are going to do it then PLEASE, PLEASE ...get Dan Harmon to direct it. But it NEEDS somebody who cares about the source material to be even 'just okay.' Would rather they just let this be with Ramis gone.
SuperCat - 3/18/2014, 6:46 PM
The first film was enchanting. Don't think any sequel or remake can top it :(
MrBitterman - 3/18/2014, 6:53 PM
Better than a Rogen reboot

the anticipation is gone but they need to get on with already. like yesterday. i'm sad about harold ramis' passing and all but this has been a long time coming so let's get a move on Sony.
McGee - 3/18/2014, 7:22 PM
Oh just let it die.

Coming from someone who was born in the 80s and grew up watching Ghostbusters I will pass
l0rdleg0las - 3/18/2014, 8:23 PM
Screw this movie. And screw Bill Murray. he acted like an asshole with Ramis death and his being a prick is what held the movie up for so long.
TheBoss117 - 3/18/2014, 8:40 PM
They should just stop. I think there's a very small percentage this movie will actually be good. No Ramis, no Murray and now no Reitman = no thanks. Reality is this movie should have been made 10 years ago. I love Ghostbusters and grew up on the 1st and 2nd films, *smh* but they just gotta let this go now.
MisterHolmes - 3/18/2014, 8:44 PM
no Bill, No Ghostbusters, i really dont wanna see younger actors as Ghostbusters, just because they'll get comedic actors of today like Seth Rogan and Jonah Hill, I like them, but it will feel more like a Parody than a real Ghostbusters
geeekgod - 3/18/2014, 8:55 PM
Please, for god's sake, as someone who was born in 1976, and grew up on 80's
pop culture, LET IT DIE!!!!
JediPhilosopher - 3/18/2014, 9:25 PM
Hmm, I'm nearly perfectly divided on whether it should be made. Eh, why not? Could be better than we imagine.
Scorpion8125 - 3/18/2014, 9:56 PM

Let it die.

It seems the universe is against this happening.

No Bill Murray.

Sad R.I.P. Harold Ramis.

No Ivan Reitman.

Enjoy the 1st 2 movies and stop this nonsense.

It just isn't meant to be.

TheTyrantVirus - 3/18/2014, 10:02 PM
All you people saying "let it die" and the like...please explain exactly why.

Will a new Ghostbusters movie somehow erase the original from existence? Chances are it won't be great, BUT even if it sucks, SO WHAT? If there's even a slight chance it will be good I say go for it! I say this as someone who has seen Ghostbusters hundreds and hundreds of times. Literally.

If you don't want to see a new Ghostbusters, that's fine, nobody is going to hold a gun to your head and make you see it. But why try to deny those of us who actually want this? It's ridiculous. The fact is, Ghostbusters is a concept that could very well live on without the original actors. There's a universal appeal that goes beyond the characters.

I say go for it. If I'm wrong, nothing happens, the movie flops, peacefully, quietly. But if I'm right, and the movie is good...well, then it's worth the risk, isn't it?
mgeoff88 - 3/18/2014, 10:52 PM
I'm not sure how I feel about this this movie.

As big of a Ghostbusters fan I am, maybe it's just best to cancel GB3.

If Sony wants to do more with the franchise, they could always do more Ghostbusters video games.
TheOnlyWoj - 3/18/2014, 11:05 PM
the only way to save this movie, is with Nic Cage playing Peter Venkman's younger brother (Dick Venkman) who is a former Chicago detective who has since become a Ghostbuster.
jimoakley666 - 3/19/2014, 1:57 AM
So. The director has walked, the star won't touch it with a barge-pole and one of the original stars / writers has just died. And they still wanna make this insult to the original?

Good grief.
MarVell - 3/19/2014, 3:28 AM

VolkanTaskillas - 3/19/2014, 4:23 AM
It's all Bill Murray fault.
TheTyrantVirus - 3/19/2014, 5:33 AM
Ryan Reynolds as Venkman Jr?

For that to make any sense, Ghostbusters 3 will have to take place in at least 2028.
RetroFit - 3/19/2014, 6:35 AM
As long as it doesn't have Jonah Hill in it I'm good to go. I HATE that guy.
Boogie138 - 3/19/2014, 7:26 AM
I still want this movie lol god help me I still want it
Kalabog - 3/19/2014, 7:40 AM
Ghostbusters III :The Ghost of Egon Spangler.

And yes lets all blame it to Bill Murray.
