Mark Romanek In Final Talks To Direct THE SHINING Prequel

"Never Let Me Go" director Mark Romanek looks set to helm "The Overlook Hotel," the prequel to Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, the adaptation of Stephen King's acclaimed novel of the same name.

Variety reports that the prequel to the Stanley Kubrick classic The Shining has finally nabbed a director in Mark Romanek (Never Let Me Go), with Gravity's Alfonso Cuarón previously rumored to be up for the role. The prequel is tentatively titled "The Overlook Hotel," the name of the hotel in which the first film, as well as the book, took place, and it will “tell the origin story of the Overlook Hotel through the eyes of its first owner, Bob T. Watson. A robber baron at the turn of the 20th century, Watson scaled the remote peaks of the Colorado Rockies to build the grandest resort in America, and a place he and his family would also call home.” Mark Romanek will be directing the film based on former “Walking Dead” showrunner Glen Mazzara's draft for the original story, which may or may not be rewritten later on, along with Mythology’s Brad Fischer, James Vanderbilt and Laeta Kalogridis producing. No current release date is planned as of now, but one should be expected down the line if all goes well. Stephen King also recently published a sequel to The Shining, called Doctor Sleep, which is gaining some interest from Warner Brothers too. What are your thoughts? Sound off below.

One Hour Photo did kick ass, but this movie in general just still seems like a bad idea. Hopefully this directors a good choice.

shoulda gone for dr. sleep instead. the shining miniseries was pretty good. more like the book than kubrick's movie. kubrick is the man, tho. the movie is scary without the usual cheap horror gimmicks that a lot of movies do

@MisterBoludo Exactly

I loved the Kubrick shining. Great movie, I hope this is a prequel to that movie, not leading to a remake.

So this is a prequel to an adaptation of a book that doesn't have a prequel?
EhMaybeSays - 7/19/2014, 12:34 PM
This is a new trend in emtertainmemt where film companies are producing spinoffs and prequels to successful movies eg. Fargo

Do this, remake the Shining like they remake everything else, and adapt a scarier version of Doctor Sleep. Make a trilogy out of it.

This is what they should do.

Only recently saw The Shining for the first time, and it's a masterpiece (stating the obvious), so this seems like a bad idea to me... kind of like the Psycho sequels.

@TheDudeRusty haven't gotten around to watching the Fargo TV series yet, but the difference there is that The Coen Brothers were actually involved in the series - whereas obviously, Kubrick isn't involved in this film.

Yeah, the first movie is a classic. Why would anyone want to try and recapture the magic?
WhiteSAMURAI - 7/19/2014, 1:31 PM
Well, at least it's set in a different time entirely which will give it a unique vibe. At first I thought it was going to be about an earlier caretaker (probably the one that killed the twins) so it would be more like a semi-remake among the lines of the Thing prequel.

Don't do a prequel to my all time favorite horror movie!

God damn money grabbers
thewonderer - 7/19/2014, 3:55 PM

The Coens WERE NOT involved with the TV show. They were exec producers which means nothing at all.

DOCTOR SLEEP!!!..not a prequel

Hollywood trying to ruin another classic. Why can't they just do something new?

The inevitability of this makes me pout glumly.

Let's make a full metal jacket prequel too. Dicks.
