Help Us Choose the Fan Art Grand Prize Winner!

There were so many awesome entries for our HulkVs fan art contest, that we want your input to choose the winners.
We received over 100 entries to the HulkVs fan art contest, and they are all incredibly good. As outlined in the contest rules, our CBM editors will pick the grand prize winner--who will get a copy of the HulkVs DVD along with $200 dollars, but we want your help, so tell us who your favorites are in the comments section below.

We have 5 other copies of the DVD to give away but all the entries are so good, we are trying to see if Lionsgate will give us more. Those will be given out via a drawing -- meaning, we'll put all your names in a hat and simply pull out the ones who will get a DVD. That way EVERYBODY has a chance at a prize. Hopefully, Lionsgate will give us a ton more so we can reward more of you for your excellent efforts.

So, while we're waiting to find out how many more copies we can get, tell us who you think should win the grand prize and why. We have our favorites, but you comments may sway a vote, so let us know what you think. We'll announce the winners this week, so don't delay telling us your pick.

If you need to check all the entries out again, you can get to the gallery at this link.

But they are all Awesome, I would not want to be the one that makes the final decision.
CRUSH - 2/2/2009, 3:55 PM
My favorite would be John Conley's. The character's are not just standing there, there's a sense of motion both with Thor swinging the hammer and the Hulk's head whipping back. The characters are in their original costumes witch for a purist is a must, and the attention to human anatomy is something that not many of the other submissions payed much attention to. And last I like that he HAND colored it. I know the computer is a great tool and I know it takes time and patience to use but it takes a different kind of skill to be able to know what colors to use and how to layer them in-order to achieve light and shade on paper. Plus you've got to love the detail of the tooth flying out of the Hulk's mouth.
funlover - 2/2/2009, 4:11 PM
Patriot Awake's is by far the best. It's like a sculpture or something. The Hulk is truly menacing in the image, and I love the detail of Wolverine grabbing the Hulk by the hair.
Buddahnice - 2/2/2009, 4:24 PM
Vassalo, Micah Brown, Erik Williams, Robert Cameron, Simon Gough, Aiiwolf, Matt Zolman, Erik Dobransky, Adam Munoa, SHAMAN, Kristine Kilayko and an honorable mention for Jenny Bornen; I think that picture is freakin' great.

Same as it was when I last posted it, not that I don't like any of the new ones, but I think I will still go with these as my tops, for sho!
IonParallax - 2/2/2009, 4:27 PM
I think in this order 3rd place- Mike Hill
2nd place Xin Wang
1st place- Bashy
TheColonel - 2/2/2009, 4:27 PM
it really is hard to even pic a top ten but heres my top 5..or 6!

Tony Vassalo
Micah Brown
Will Palmer
Amber Khan
Jin
Bashy/ Xin wang...ok so its 7
Rorschach01 - 2/2/2009, 4:35 PM
I really love Jin's entry.
But my other favorites are: (In no certain order)
Amber Khan
Fernando Gomez
Shaman
Rene Lopez
Erik Dobronsky
TheHammer - 2/2/2009, 4:38 PM
There are a lot of great entries, but when it comes down to a winner, I've got to vote based on originality, artistic design, and talent.

#1 Tony Vassallo's entry

#2 Jin's entry

Tony is by far the most talented with Jin a close second. I would actually buy both these masterpieces!
Odinson1 - 2/2/2009, 4:44 PM
I really like these 4:

Mike Hill: good proportioning and foreshortening;

Bashy: Good dynamics, beautiful coloring- it reminds me of Alex Ross' style

Will Palmer: good composition and dynamics. Style is reminiscent of Simone Bianchi's

Eric Williams: it's just freaking cool! I love Wolvie's pose
sniktchick74 - 2/2/2009, 4:45 PM
Er, Jin's entry is a total rip-off from Wolverine #55, FYI.

sniktchick74 - 2/2/2009, 4:48 PM
I Loved all the artwork that I saw!

Too Bad that Everybody can't get a prize cuz I Loved all the work that I saw and could clearly see the Hard work put to each one.

Even the Funny Ones!

NubaX - 2/2/2009, 4:51 PM
John Conley's is the best. its a totally orignal scene, with awesome hand colored detail, (wolverine' claw is going through hulks forearm)the characters are in a position thats physically perfect. and it has a true comic book feel.
BrockSamson - 2/2/2009, 4:52 PM
I'm a little torn between Bashy and Kristine Kilayko.
I agree with sniktchick74, Bashy's work is great, and reminiscent of an Alex Ross piece, while Kristine's is just as beautiful, but with a slightly more modernistic appeal to it...
I would have to say, overall... Kristine Kilayko.

(Erik Williams' piece is fabulous as well!) ;-)
adamant877 - 2/2/2009, 4:56 PM
PEOPLE! Jin is a FRAUD!!!!!
funlover - 2/2/2009, 4:57 PM
Just thought I'd add another. I also like Tony Vassallo's entry in a lot of ways. Very 3D, and the coloring is awesome too. And Jins entry may be a rip off, but it's still freakin' awesome. He may have used some art work as inspiration, but it still took some skill to draw it. And if the judges say it's a rip off, they will disqualify him. I'm just giving my opinion, as others are. Good luck to all!!!
TheHammer - 2/2/2009, 4:58 PM
(It's hard to agree that Jin's piece is as good as the others as it is obviously a copy of two other artist's works entirely.)
adamant877 - 2/2/2009, 4:59 PM
Kristine Kilayko, Matthew Hargues, and Tony Vassalo. The first two have the best figures, proportions and composition and Tony's is very unique that stands itself out. Jins entry is just a copy and paste of Mike Deodatos hulk and cover art to a published wolverine comic.
cable82 - 2/2/2009, 5:02 PM
I really like Simon Gough's entry. It's not typical, but that's what's good about it!
KentAllard - 2/2/2009, 5:05 PM
JIN DIDN'T DRAW ANYTHING, IT HAS TWO STEPS,CUT AND PAST!!!!
BrockSamson - 2/2/2009, 5:12 PM
#1 Jin's Entry
DreamVertigo - 2/2/2009, 5:18 PM
I agree. Even "IF" Jin did the art, which is questionable cause you can alter a pics look with Photoshop-his peice was "UNORGINAL" thus should be disqualified! PLUS you can see the line seperation!

I like Damian Vargas' cause it has a dramatic look, cool colors and his Hulk is sick!

Good luck to all!
Sp1kethesequel - 2/2/2009, 5:18 PM
"JIN DIDN'T DRAW ANYTHING, IT HAS TWO STEPS,CUT AND PAST!!!! "

Ditto!!
sniktchick74 - 2/2/2009, 5:19 PM
Hi

This is Xin. I think Kristine did a great job. I think she should get top honors.
xin2look - 2/2/2009, 5:31 PM
Hello,
Thanks to everyone who voted for my pic.
Good luck everyone!

-tony vassallo
vass - 2/2/2009, 5:48 PM
#3 mike hill looks good though. even if the hair looks like a fro

#1 Matthew Hargues

#2 will palmer

Anthony Hoogsteden's Entry looked interesting and almost got 3rd from me but the body of hulk is ripped soo much to the point of looking like bark on the side of a tree.

i had to check out the jin everyone seems to be talking about. yeah its very fake. and not well done at all. the hair needs to blend into the black bottom of hulk. and get the black in each pic to match. not look like 2 pics on top of eachother.
grif - 2/2/2009, 5:55 PM
I think that Tony Vassallo should win first place. His colors are good and the general layout is the best. Kristen's is also awesome, but I don't think it is as dynamic. So Kristen should get second place. I also liked Bashy and would give him third place. =)

And Jin does seem to have used copy/paste quite well...
Pidge - 2/2/2009, 5:55 PM
top picks
#1 Kristine Kilayko
#2 Erik Dobransky
#3 Sharon Eiben
#4 Mike Hill
#5 ???????
oh JIN is a RIP-OFF ARTIST..anyone can do what he did..
automatic disqualification!!!..i think!!
peterparker420 - 2/2/2009, 5:58 PM
3rd Place: Adam Munoa
2nd Place: Matthew Hargues

And the winner is (IMO)..................................................

ERIK DOBRANSKY!!!!!!

Yea!!!
Gideon - 2/2/2009, 6:00 PM
#1 Tony Vassallo FTW! He took the characters and made them his own adding his own flavor.
drkliter - 2/2/2009, 6:02 PM
thats right. lets tie jin to a post and take turns whiping em.
grif - 2/2/2009, 6:03 PM
In the interest of fairness I have to point out that Will Palmer's entry is almost completely swiped. Granted, it's a very good drawing, but not original. Wolverine, Thor, and Hulk were all copied from other pictures.

See for yourselves:

His entry: http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/HulkVs/galleries/?g=41&i=1813

Wolverine: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v338/spasmaticgonads/Wolverine_Fighting_Sabertooth.jpg

Thor: http://artesecuencial.blogspot.es/img/ultimate.thor.jpg

Hulk: http://cache.gawker.com/assets/video/stills/h/hulk519_kotaku.flv.jpg

And yeah, Jin is a hack and his "work" is completely copied and pasted. Simone Bianchi drew the Wolverine and Mike Deodato Jr. drew the Hulk; Jin took about 3 seconds to put them together.

spasmaticgonads - 2/2/2009, 6:14 PM
tony vassalo's

it's the most dynamic and original one in the whole bunch!
xxcthulhuxx - 2/2/2009, 6:16 PM
Vassallo.... for its total dynamics and rich pallet.
Majnun - 2/2/2009, 6:16 PM
i had no time to make one but i was thinking...
hulk thor and a cup.
grif - 2/2/2009, 6:18 PM
#1 Vassallo! yay Tony 1c :)
blackoctober - 2/2/2009, 6:20 PM
vassallo's is great but it all it shows of hulk is his face...it doesn't even feel like he is fighting back but just standing there taking the punishment
SolidSnake910 - 2/2/2009, 6:21 PM
Ok wow talk about a lynch mob against Jin. And ditto on Spasms comment. There are a lot of unoriginal drawings here. So get over it, and stop pouncing on people for giving their opinion as the editors asked. Let them judge if he " copied and pasted" his entry.
TheHammer - 2/2/2009, 6:23 PM
well, Jin's entry has the best art, but i highly doubt that Jin is in fact Simone Bianchi and Mike Deodato. And even if he was, thats two people so DQ!!! After that, i'd have to say

Grand Prize - Tony Vassallo

The figures are dynamic, the style is very original-no copycat art here-and the composition is pretty frickin cool. I feel like I'm standing right in the middle of the fray, watchin' Thor's back. Bravo Tony!
yatest - 2/2/2009, 6:27 PM
#1 Bashy
His retro art style is great. He would make Jack Kirby proud
#2 Will Palmer
Great values and dynamic poses.
#3 David McMillin
Realistic shading on the Hulk's face.
rorschachmask - 2/2/2009, 6:32 PM
if u guys read the rules CAREFULLY they say to create an ORIGINAL artwork depicting a BATTLE SCENE of hulk vs wolverine and/or thor. so with the rules in mind here are the top 7:
Kristine Kilayko
Tony Vassallo
Gabriel Chacon
John Conley
Erik Dobransky
Erik Williams
John Belloti, Jr.
SolidSnake910 - 2/2/2009, 6:38 PM
I believe Tony Vassallo should win first place.
There are quite a few nice pictures in there, but they lack that power and tension between the characters and It is after all, Hulk, Wolverine, and Thor, how could you NOT make it dynamic?!
Some of the pictures are of only Hulk and either Wolverine or Thor, there was even some with just Hulk. I understood this as a Hulk vs., so why not throw in all three there? :)
Also, What I like about Vassallo's Piece is that it's not a direct battle between the three characters, but clearly shows that their in conflict.
So good luck to Tony! And good luck to all the other contestants :D
darknesswing - 2/2/2009, 6:41 PM

Wow, some of the art here is truly great. I had a hard time deciding, but the winner to me is.

Jin's Entry
followed very closly by John Conley's Entry

The rest are in no particular order. They are just some of my favorites.

Charles Aikerson
Will Palmer
Bashy
Fred Lupus Entry
Jason-Rowles
tenaciousbt - 2/2/2009, 6:41 PM
Tony's is alright, but I don't think it should win first place, maybe a finalist but not first. Frankly I love Bashy's, it's got a very retro feel to it and it's very, very well done. Plus I have an immense amount of respect for someone who can color something that well by hand. Of course I'd like mine to take the grand prize, but I'm not going to go on and on about how mine should win, unlike some people who clearly have no shame. I'm looking at you, SolidSnake910/Gabriel Chacon.
spasmaticgonads - 2/2/2009, 6:46 PM
I'm a little confused...

What does some fan's art have anything to do with comic book movies. yeah yeah yeah, its of the characters up on the big screen. but who cares?

this site is about comic book movie news.

if i wanted to see this shit, i'd go somewhere else

PLEASE CMB! stick to your roots~!
TylerDayspring - 2/2/2009, 6:47 PM
@tenacious: ok have u not read the comments about Jin's entry? and do u read ANY comic books, cuz if u did u'd notice that jin's art is very very similar to those in the comics, almost too similar, like to the 99.99999th percentile
SolidSnake910 - 2/2/2009, 6:48 PM
It's not "similar", it's EXACTLY the same. I posted links to the two original drawings he copied and pasted in my first comment.
spasmaticgonads - 2/2/2009, 6:50 PM
kristine kilayko was my top choice
and jenny bornens was another of my favorite
really funny and original.
I really enjoyed all the different type of
styles very creative.
HR - 2/2/2009, 6:51 PM
spasmaticgonads, Which piece is yours?
dbzfan - 2/2/2009, 6:52 PM
Mike Hill.
spasmaticgonads - 2/2/2009, 6:53 PM
@spasms: lol look im just trying to speak the truth. jk jk but no i really dont care if i win cuz there are many entries in here better than mine its just that the guidelines that some of these ppl are using to pick the winners are leaving out art pieces that meet those pre-requisites, like vasallo's, kilayko's, mine, and others, and c'mon u gotta be proud of what u did so of course u gotta speak up.
SolidSnake910 - 2/2/2009, 6:53 PM
@spasmatic: dude your piece is amazing and one of my favorites
dbzfan - 2/2/2009, 6:55 PM
Being proud is one thing, but to shower your entry with praise like that and act like it's not even yours is something else entirely.

And thank you dbzfan, I appreciate that.
spasmaticgonads - 2/2/2009, 6:55 PM
@smasmatic: your welcome, i really like it better than some of the others because you hand drew it and shaded it with pencil instead of coloring with the computer, when I draw and shade with my own hands and pencils it makes me feel like a did a better job than just using a computer
dbzfan - 2/2/2009, 6:57 PM
@spasm: by the way bro ur pic, mike hill, is one of the best. great detail and shading. its awesome
SolidSnake910 - 2/2/2009, 6:58 PM
and yea ur right spasm, i feel like an ass

SolidSnake910 - 2/2/2009, 7:01 PM
@solid: your pic was really good man. I liked how tough the hulk was, he can withstand anything lol
dbzfan - 2/2/2009, 7:02 PM
thanks dbzfan =)
SolidSnake910 - 2/2/2009, 7:04 PM
@solid: no prob, just have to appreciate good artwork.
dbzfan - 2/2/2009, 7:05 PM
I believe Dean Nelson's picture has to be the best because not many people realize that Hulk is the only one that can lift Thor's hammer. The shadow of Thor but not in the picture was amazing.
GeekDojo - 2/2/2009, 7:06 PM
i think john bellotti jr's should win, it looks the most proffesional, I feel like I could see it on the cover of a comic or sumthin! unfortunately i see a lot of copies in here too!
magog29 - 2/2/2009, 7:08 PM
yea nelson's was pretty cool too how made it look like an actual comic issue. @dbzfan: hey which one's ur entry?
SolidSnake910 - 2/2/2009, 7:08 PM
I know I'm not going to win so I want Micah Brown to win. He depicts the situation as...well just horror. The place is surrounded with fire and the two just look like they are going to kill each other. The detail is just simply amazing and the characters just look awesome.
dbzfan - 2/2/2009, 7:09 PM
belloti's is a great picture but the hulk looks a lil weird
SolidSnake910 - 2/2/2009, 7:10 PM
@Solid:I'm Will Foster, it's the first one
dbzfan - 2/2/2009, 7:10 PM
My Number 1
Kristine KLayko
and then in no particular order
Simon GOugh
Matthew Hargues
Bashy
Joshua Vaca
Tony Valasso
JOhn Bellotti Jr
and
Jenny Bornen for sheer hilarity!
dabodunne - 2/2/2009, 7:11 PM
@dbzfan: yea micah's is dark, gritty, and definetly worthy of 1st place prize
SolidSnake910 - 2/2/2009, 7:11 PM
i think seriously jenny bornen should win. that is one of the most original piece here and im sure it put a smile on everyones face.
SolidSnake910 - 2/2/2009, 7:13 PM
@Solid: that's exactly what I'm saying, but everyone wants Tony Valasso, which is still good art but it doesn't feel like marvel. It's more like Image comics work or something
dbzfan - 2/2/2009, 7:13 PM
hey solid, i hear what your saying but it might just be the coloring on it, either way i still thinks its awesome, the anatomy and colors are awesome!
magog29 - 2/2/2009, 7:14 PM
I love all these entries. I could look at these for hours (I haven't already, Honest). My Favourite if I had to choose would be Matthew Hargues', I love pencil art. Also I love Jenny Bornens entry, It makes me laugh every time I look at it. I Adore them all though.
TheAnswer - 2/2/2009, 7:16 PM
@dbzfan: yea it doesnt really have that marvel feel to it but its still a badass picture and u have remember tho that it has to be original so it should'nt have any feel to it but the one the artist wants to create
SolidSnake910 - 2/2/2009, 7:17 PM
@magog: hey which pic are u talkn about, jenny bornen's?
SolidSnake910 - 2/2/2009, 7:18 PM
@Solid: yeah I know, just expressing how I feel about the picture. Like I already said it is really good art, better than what I can do. I just don't want it to win first. It has a feel of savage and hulk getting his ass kicked lol
dbzfan - 2/2/2009, 7:19 PM
@theAnswer: I agree that Matthew has amazing detail and the characters look right. Also, I also love pencil art too =)
dbzfan - 2/2/2009, 7:21 PM
i agree with TheAnswer..all of these pics are freakn amazing, there is some serious talent out there. i think the best reward tho is just being able to show everyone the skills u have cuz i know everyones work here was appreciated
SolidSnake910 - 2/2/2009, 7:22 PM
i love pencil art
SolidSnake910 - 2/2/2009, 7:23 PM
to all of those that entered, you did a great job. I bet everyone put hard work into their art and it's awesome. I hope to have more drawing competitions so we can see everyone's talent. Plus, I have learned a lot from looking at these pics
dbzfan - 2/2/2009, 7:26 PM
Seriously you all need to take a second look at Patriotawake's entry
Buddahnice - 2/2/2009, 7:27 PM
@budda: what page is it on?
dbzfan - 2/2/2009, 7:29 PM
@dbzfan: yo i like ur pic a lot. i can tell ur a true dbz fan like moi. it reminds me of a supersaiyan 4 goku beating on vegeta.lol
SolidSnake910 - 2/2/2009, 7:29 PM
@Solid: thanks man, I really appreciate it. And yeah it does look like dbz. That's where I learned to draw, was just looking at the cartoon. lol supersaiyan 4 goku could never beat up vegeta lol. THE PRINCE OF SAIYANS IS NUMBER 1!
dbzfan - 2/2/2009, 7:32 PM
budda what page is it on
SolidSnake910 - 2/2/2009, 7:34 PM
http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/HulkVs/galleries/?g=41&i=1753
Buddahnice - 2/2/2009, 7:35 PM
@dbzfan: yea i learned to draw from dbz also man but u definetly surpassed me as far as dbz art style goes
SolidSnake910 - 2/2/2009, 7:36 PM
Check out how dramatic the Hulk's pose is, and it's clearly not a rip off like some of the other entries. And no I'm not the artist lol.
Buddahnice - 2/2/2009, 7:36 PM
@Solid: thanks, but I doubt it
dbzfan - 2/2/2009, 7:37 PM
@Budda: yeah his pic is good but the character's look a little odd. Well, mainly just Wolverine. But I like the battle going on. Double team lol
dbzfan - 2/2/2009, 7:38 PM
I agree it isn't as polished as some of the other entries but I think the oddness you refer to develops out of an original style and not out of a lack of ability.
Buddahnice - 2/2/2009, 7:41 PM
I already listed my votes for the top three. But I really dig pencil art...and I hate computer artwork. That's why my picks are all old fashioned. Check out the shading on David McMillin's entry. He's on page two.
rorschachmask - 2/2/2009, 7:53 PM
even though john bellotti jrs is my fav, they all show different interpretations of these characters so how would anybody judge it? You cant say leonardo is a better painter than michaelangelo because they are both equally good in different styles. I think the contest should of had certain parameters like composition, actions, colors, pencils or even a more solid theme like "hulk vs whoever in a city" good luck to everyone!
magog29 - 2/2/2009, 7:54 PM
Nah, I respect people who use photoshop but I personally like old school pencil, acrylic, and pen.
rorschachmask - 2/2/2009, 8:01 PM
I am a big fan of Tony Vassallo's picture. It has amazing shading and a fantastic display of action while using up the entire space. In addition, there is a clear mastery of the tools and key artistic principles used all in one awesome picture. But to put it plainly, it just rocks my eyes right out of my head.
wagner - 2/2/2009, 8:08 PM
I'm disappointed that no one had a grey Hulk picture.

Still think Bashy's entry is the best.
rorschachmask - 2/2/2009, 8:13 PM
dbz-- you know that a lot of Image artists drew for Marvel? I'm not arguing, but thought I would put it out there... =)

I think it takes guts to put your art out there-- I personally can't draw at all so I think everyone did work they should be proud of!
Pidge - 2/2/2009, 8:24 PM
Will Palmer doesn't deserve it, people.

Copied from my first comment on this page:

"In the interest of fairness I have to point out that Will Palmer's entry is almost completely swiped. Granted, it's a very good drawing, but not original. Wolverine, Thor, and Hulk were all copied from other pictures.

Thor: http://artesecuencial.blogspot.es/img/ultimate.thor.jpg

Good drawing, but totally unoriginal.
spasmaticgonads - 2/2/2009, 8:29 PM
1st pic shud go 2 MIKE HILL
prinzjoker - 2/2/2009, 8:46 PM
There are several good entries but the #1 spot should go to John Conley's entry for being totally hand drawn, original costumes, light and shading, and good attention to detail. I would also like to see Rene Lopez & Kristine Kilayko also receive a prize. Good job to all who entered!
hippychic66 - 2/2/2009, 8:49 PM
lol, rlg you do realise nobodies going to vote for yours now?

And tylerdayspring, its a competion you miserable git! By all means go elswer!
Rorschach01 - 2/2/2009, 9:04 PM
Tony Valasso is the greatest of them all!!!
OrionIsTheHunter - 2/2/2009, 9:05 PM
For Me the most original drawing is on first page by Juan De La Torre, I think it's pretty good!!!!!!

wonderOax - 2/2/2009, 9:08 PM
NOT sayin his the best but I'm feelin Damian Vargas. Hulk looks like a maniac who just ran through old Logan & Thor
Jsabbath - 2/2/2009, 9:08 PM
http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/SuperHeroStories/news/?a=6133
Joker1Zero - 2/2/2009, 9:11 PM
I like the piece done by Juan De La Torre. I think it's original because the old costumes are being used and all the characters have cool poses.
HairyMan1 - 2/2/2009, 9:31 PM
Dean Nelson's is my favorite. Original and he has some comic history knowledge. The original comic cover is a good idea.
Talisac - 2/2/2009, 9:31 PM
You're right hairyMan1!!!

There are some good stuff all around but my vote going to be maybe a lil bias but i like the one with me in it, good work Mitch for finding the loopole...ha thats a funny word.
Deadpoo1 - 2/2/2009, 10:17 PM
Erik Williams isn't getting enough love!
Semyaza - 2/2/2009, 10:37 PM
WOW – There are sooooo many great entries. As I am looking through all of them there has to be a way to narrow it down to the winner. Yeah some people did not do a “battle scene” or an “original” piece of art. However there are a lot of people who did exactly that! So how do you choose? I personally looked for originality and who went the extra mile. My pick was for Dean Nelson! Not only did he capture the battle scene and did a great job with the art work. He also kept it interesting with making it a comic book cover with all of the goodies and plenty of mystery! What happen to Thor? I see him in the shadow – but is that really him or???? Seeing Hulk with the hammer was pretty cool also – yet nobody else had that either. I would by that comic book just from the cover itself! LOL So, my vote goes for Dean Nelson!! I hope the judges will see that. Good luck to everyone! Great job!
movieguru75 - 2/2/2009, 10:38 PM
Have u guys even seen luis's it's crazy
prime365 - 2/2/2009, 10:50 PM
Okay, I hate to break this to everyone, but Kristine Kilayko's entry is a fake! I seen that Picture on a t-shirt a Target sometime before christmas. That artist is the one doing half of the marvel t-shirts and posters sold at Target and Walmart. I'm pretty sure that the real artist is John Cassaday. But I'll have to check on that. Jin's is a rip-off of Wolverine #55 by Simone Bianchi.
joxua1five - 2/2/2009, 10:55 PM
Ok, I need to retract my earlier opinion post. I looked at Jins entry again very closely this time, and I have to agree with you'll, he did totally cut and paste that picture from other art work. You can see the cut line right in the middle. That is just sorry for someone to do that. So, I apologize, and retract my earlier statements defending this fraud. But my other choices stands as is. The more I look at Tony's the more I like it over all. But there are a lot of good pieces here.
TheHammer - 2/2/2009, 11:02 PM
It's hard to choose, because I like all of them so much, but ultimately, the incredibleness of Tony Vassallo's Incredible Hulk is just a bit more incredible than the incredibleness of the others.

And, I mean, come on. Tony Vassallo is just awesome. Consider that before you vote.
SquidSoup - 2/2/2009, 11:07 PM
Here is a link where you can see how Jin ripped off a cover of Wolverin #55

Tony Vassalo. all the way, no. # 1
itsdanjae - 2/2/2009, 11:12 PM
I hate to tell some of you but the Hulk hasn't picked up mjolnir. Cap has but not the Hulk.
funlover - 2/2/2009, 11:13 PM
I'm still voting for Damian Vargas to AT LEAST make it into the other 5! Again I just really like that it was a different approach to the "battle" theme & tells a story. Again, AT LEAST the 5!

Sp1kethesequel - 2/2/2009, 11:20 PM
Doesn't anyboy like Joshua Vaca's entry. It was pretty good and original.
joxua1five - 2/2/2009, 11:22 PM
Tony's artwork seems much more refined. It looks like an original style. I feel the need to pick up a copy of his book, just for the cover he produced.
OrionIsTheHunter - 2/2/2009, 11:24 PM
I agree, the cover alone is pretty badass. Tony Vassalo blows my mind, so obviously my vote goes to him.

joxua1five - 2/2/2009, 11:28 PM
You guys are idiots. You're obviously not artists or real comic collectors for that matter.
joxua1five - 2/2/2009, 11:32 PM
Kristine Kilayko's entry is not a fake, but it was not done by kristine kilayko.
I guess she colored it, the guy who drew/ finished the piece is here

http://semaj007.deviantart.com/

http://semaj007.deviantart.com/art/HULK-VS-POW-and-Details-111323355

and kristine kilayko is a professional

http://www.linkedin.com/pub/1/363/365

So it's not exactly a fake...

I still prefer vassallo's anyway, but kilayko+semaj007 is pretty good definately top 5
Pidge - 2/2/2009, 11:36 PM
That's where i seen that pic. On deviant art. Thanks Pidge. Either way if she is a professioanl, she can afford her own damn copy of Hulk Vs. Leave the contest to the amateurs. That goes for Vassallo's too.
joxua1five - 2/2/2009, 11:47 PM
Had I the time, I would have submitted something. I've been drawing and painting since I'm 8, and I'm 40 now. I'm not the greatest, but my eye is sharp.

There is a saying; "So many artists, so little art". Without going into what makes something art...

I'm not going to critique what I didn't like, and there was a lot (thanks to the due diligence of sharp posters here who helped me rule out some submissions due to fraud), but would rather focus on what I thought was good and why. I judged on many facets of what constitutes art; composition, color, style, proportion, emotional content, the use of lighting and space, and the ability to convey a message or provoke a thought...to start with. In the order I liked them:

#1 Bashy - This is a fantastic retro piece that is reminiscent of Kirby on his best day, with Alex Ross imitating Kirby on his best day. He not only had to come up with an original composition, but then emulate the old colors, poses and stylization of the 60's that gave us the Silver Age, and he did it masterfully. He uses light sourcing tastefully (and properly, from the source he chose it to come from), his proportion to anatomy ratio is correct, and he has a firm grasp of shading, blending, and texture. Not only all this, but he knew where NOT to go overboard, like with his judicious use of ink and color, which is just as important as knowing what to leave. I actually thought for a moment I was looking at a cutout of an old comic cover. This picture gets my vote as #1, and Marvel or DC should be looking at this fellow.

#2 Matthew Hargues - I am a sucker for good old fashion un-inked pencil work, and this one is the best I could find. Many elements of this artwork pop out immediately; his scale and proportion, his use of shading and he used his single lightsource perfectly without overdoing it. The anticipation present in the framing of an impending disaster about to happen is incredible. He is a storyteller in his art. He also makes it obvious that he either has a tremendous collection of anatomy/muscle reference books or he's a body-builder and works from memory, as his musculature placement is right there; Wolverine is big, but proportional and Hulk is huge, but still proportional, it never seems unplausable within the definition of the piece. Were this inked and/or colored, it might have made my first choice, but it did instead make my #2. Again, Marvel and DC need to see what this guy is doing, hopefully it's consistent.

#3 Kristine Kalayko - Not on everyone's list, but I thought it important to note that while anatomy and proportion may need a touch of work here, the color and composition is wonderful. Her use of shading and lighting is well used, and it has motion in it's flow from figure to figure. Lines are kept clean, skin texture is present and not overdone (like the "just-pumped-up" spaghetti veins present in some comic art), and she is able to give the art a 3-dimensional feel with her knowledge of placement. Limbs are literally sticking out of the "boundaries" of the art, giving a sense of exploding action. I would like to have seen some background art, but still it's very original, and it gets my #3.

#4 Simon Gough - I appreciate style in composition and here you have it. Comic art doesn't have to look like ridiculous, disproportioned muscles and bloody action scenes to get a message apart if you're a good storyteller and artist, and Simon proves it here. If a picture speaks a thousand words, here's a novel. I almost pity poor Wolverine in this. Gough makes it obvious here with his ability to convey an idea with his art that Hulk has the ability to make short work of Wolverine without even showing the fight. Wolverine looks almost like a nuisance to Hulk here, he is so small and insignificant. Hulk looks almost surprised to see him standing before him ready to fight. Simon's art is cartoony, almost abstract, but with purpose. Excellent use of lighting and dimension, great use of space, and even better lack of misuse of space. It's my #4

#5 Jenny Bornen - For having the guts to interject what should be a serious fight with humor. Hulk wins the fight without ever touching Thor, and it's funny as everyone else here easily admits. There is a lot of dull unused space, but due to the nature of the piece, it's acceptable. It's a cartoon, and the colors, shapes, style and composition are all cartoony, so kudos for consistency. The lines are kept sharp and simple without over-simplifying the dynamics of the entire work, and even though it's computer art, she still manages to get a little detail in without making a mess. This is an adorable piece that made me laugh, so I made it #5, where I originally had only four. Jenny if you're reading, make more!

Those are my favorite five compositions. There was some good art, but unfortunately, while some shine, some shine brighter. Hats off to everone that had the guts to (legitimately) submit their art and dare the world to critique it. I actually had a couple more choices, but thanks to a couple of above "pointer-outers" (specifically sniktchick74 and spasmaticgonads, thanks guys), I was able to discern the real, labored artwork from the plagiarists. It's disheartening to think that while some people are pouring all their emotion and talent into their work, others used a computer to assemble someone else's artwork into hackneyed and laughable mirages of art and submit them as their own.
gtrman - 2/2/2009, 11:55 PM
After posting my opinions I saw the Kristine Kalayko comments. I imagine if her submission is actually someone else's and she only had a hand in it (original artist is listed as James Anthony Huang of the Philippines), we will soon be finding out from the original artist, hopefully. Regardless, she is a professional, and probably should have left this to the amateurs trying to win a simple contest. Both artist should come forward to explain the piece so we could better judge.
gtrman - 2/3/2009, 12:14 AM
i have to say i'm torn 3 ways. i love Micah Brown's for its vibrancy and dynamic. it just pops but is so dark at the same time. i love it. Tony Vassallo's is great as well with excellent coloring and surface texture along with that dynamic again. the only thing is the teeth throw me off a bit, but that is the style of the picture. Matthew Harges piece's detail and definition is top-notch. my only critque is it could have used a little darker shading to get it to really stand out; with that it would've been my #1 without contest.

i do appreciate Bashy's piece with it's movement and coloring and throwback to the retro style... i'm just not a fan of the style. if it got #1 tho, i wouldn't complain.
randyjohn - 2/3/2009, 12:44 AM
@joxua1five RE "Okay, I hate to break this to everyone, but Kristine Kilayko's entry is a fake! I seen that Picture on a t-shirt a Target sometime before christmas."

Prove it before you say S#it. Damn, i must own a tshirt company coz i did the drawing from my imagination while Kristine colored the piece. To hear someone say my work which i slaved over for days a fake is pure BS! I never draw with references. I never copy any other artist for poses or musculature. Me and Kristine being in health practitioners, we know a bit about anatomy. Please get your head outta your ass and check your facts first before you open your trap.

1. Its fake
- no its not. Its original and i can prove it. Can you prove its fake?
2. I seen that Picture on a t-shirt a Target sometime before christmas
- I nor Kristine have never sold this to target or printed it anywhere. And you saw this sometime before Christmas? I guess somebody must have a time machine coz the only place we published this piece is here and on Deviantart... when you may ask? Jan 31, 2009.

Damn... are you stoned or something bro? or are you that desperate to win that you have to bring other people down with made up rumors?

And im also not a professional artist nor is Kristine. Check any comic book, collectible card or magazine if we were ever employed to do anything in the industry.... I havent and neither has Kristine. If i was a pro, how the hell would i have time to join contests when i can earn a lot more? simple answer is i cant. Juz be fair. that's all i ask.

Plus... that was wayyy out of line to call all of us idiots, non artists and arent serious comic collectors. What makes you so special above everyone else? You own Amazing Fantasy 1? You can draw awesome artwork? Go find a job at Marvel or DC and stop stepping on people.

Thanks Pidge for trying to check the facts!
JamesH - 2/3/2009, 3:40 AM
@gtrman... nope, we arent professional artists and doing a search of both our names, you'll soon find out that's true. We both collaborated on the piece (which the site owners allow btw.... i asked em :) ). I did the grayscale art and she added the colors. You can even see our process in the links that Pidge have provided (thanks again).

I would be happy to answer any questions regarding our piece, its authenticity and originality. I juz want a fair contest for everybody.. us included of course.
JamesH - 2/3/2009, 3:48 AM
As for the other entries, ive seen a lot of wonderful artworks both digital and traditional. Of course, i wanna win as would any other person here but if asked, here are my personal faves and why, aside from my own piece (All of these are objectively chosen and I dont know any of the artists... these are chosen coz of their skill, character placement, anatomy, lighting&shading and poses):

Matthew Hargues - great sense of anatomy and movement. Clean lineart and hatching techniques. Lighting and shading well placed. Great perspective... only gripe? Cant see Hulk's face but its still really good and is my top pick (except for mine of course.... :) )

Amber Khan - a great tribute to classic artists. The lineart, the inking and even the facial features are reminiscent of 70- early 80's books. Good job. I want my Thor thicker personally but that's juz me.

Rowles - great lighting! I love the anatomy and pose of Wolverine mostly... love that canuckle head!

Erik Williams - i like the dynamic perspective and pose of Wolverine. The glowy effect is nicely done. Anatomy at some parts are a bit off but i think all artists who entered here dont have perfect anatomy (mine included of course). I would also love to see Wolvie's face but i guess the pose made up a lot for the emotion. Great job

(I didnt include those that were totally copied from pro's and those that were copy pasted from existing books since rules say that it should be an ORIGINAL ART)

JamesH - 2/3/2009, 4:21 AM
@ Pidge, btw... the Kris Kilayko you linked wasnt the same person as the one i collaborated with. The person I collaborated with studied here in the Philippines and not in the USA... although she's an American Citizen now who's staying there permanently in the USA.

And i think that the Kris Kilayko you linked is male. The person i collaborated with is a female... Kristine Kilayko. The judges know her personal data as well as email address and address and that she's a totally different person from Kris Kilayko. Man, i wish we were working in the gaming industry and had those credentials. :)

But i commend you for trying to research and keep things fair. ;)
JamesH - 2/3/2009, 6:55 AM
here are mine in order
1:Will Palmer
2:Micah Brown
3:Mike Hill
4:Aiilwolf
5:Kristine Kilayko
these are the one's that i think are the best
GOOD LUCK TO THE WINNERS!
LethalWeapon - 2/3/2009, 7:44 AM
Matthew Hargues is my favorite hands down!!!

Proportion, detail, lighting, dynamics, great action sequence, realism! The only thing he doesn't touch is color which in his case, shouldn't apply unless we compare two colored drawings to determine which has the best color.

IMO, Matthew Hargues should win first prize!!!
Shaman - 2/3/2009, 7:53 AM
@Joxua: I don't think Vassallo is a professional. He signed his piece with JK1C-- and someone else (who probabaly knows him) posted with something commending him on 1C. Just a guess, but JK1C probabaly stands for Joe Kubert 1st Class, which would mean he is a first year student at the Joe Kubert School for Comics. Therefore a student and not a professional. =)
For that matter, a FIRST year, not even like a senior or something.
And yeah, I would guess the judges would probably be familiar with professionals. I am still saying Vassallo for first and then Bashy and Kilayko in some order. But again, everyone really put their all out there and I think that's awesome. I should have entered my best stick figures! Maybe not as bulky as hulk should be, but... lol...
No worries James =)
Pidge - 2/3/2009, 8:09 AM
I didn't want someone who isn't a cheater to be labeled as such. =)

Pidge - 2/3/2009, 8:41 AM
Yeah, juz wanted to clear up that Kristine Kilayko is not the same as Kris Kilayko in case they get mixed up. Anybody can contact Kris Kilayko and ask him if this is his work here... which im sure hell be surprised. LOL.

I nor Kristine never went to art school. I had a few lessons back at gradeschool during summer classes and that was way back 1990 or 91. I learned everything coz of my love for comic books and art.

Well, enough of that until any questions will be raised. I cant wait to know the winners and i hope the judges will also comment as to why and how they chose the winner! Good luck to all
JamesH - 2/3/2009, 8:46 AM
1st place - Kristine Kilayko.
kaos - 2/3/2009, 9:07 AM
JamesH...
Thanks for the input. It's good to hear that it's not only "amature" (however produced like a pro, as I saw the step-by-step you referred to, good job!) and valid here in the contest, but that it was a collaborative effort in which two artists without egos didn't step all over each other and were able to produce an original piece of art. I was impressed with her subtle use of highlights in order to keep the tone of the color consistent. She has a really good eye for it. I'll stand by my comments regarding anatomy, but it's good that you have reference material to draw from while using your imagination to produce the fluid action in the picture. All three poses are very plausible within the frame of anatomy, something sadly lacking in other submissions. I'm also surprised to hear you are completely self-taught. You're almost pro-level here. I saw the background art at your site, the HULK VS in stone, and I need to say you should have included it here. It would have filled the negative space and fleshed out the frame a bit more, but none the less, it's a hell of a job! Good luck to you and Kristine.
gtrman - 2/3/2009, 9:27 AM
Thanks gtrman... we all need all the luck we can get here. :) I actually wanted to include the logo from the start but i feared we may get disqualified coz of the rules which stated that it should be 100% original. Since i didnt do the logo, i chose to remove before submitting our final entry. Better safe than sorry. :)

Thanks for mentioning Ktin's subtle highlights! That's why i chose her to color and not do it by myself coz im fond of the dodge tool which would have made it all shiny and plastic looking. :) Thank you as well for your additional inputs and we really appreciate your comments a lot.
JamesH - 2/3/2009, 10:27 AM
C'mon guys! Damian's gotta make it to the five!

http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/HulkVs/galleries/?g=41&i=1814
Jsabbath - 2/3/2009, 11:25 AM
Okay, so you JamesH drew the pic and Ms. Kilayko colored it. Way to go. It's not against the rules. It doesn't say anything about two people submitting one entry. So it took two of you to try and win this. Hey maybe you do own a t-shirt company. I don't know but your artwork looks very similar. Or maybe your just a biter.
joxua1five - 2/3/2009, 11:44 AM
they are all amazing but I think Kristine has the coolest one.. its absolutely awesome and the artwork is good enough for professional comic books :) but yeah JIN'S ENTRY IS FAKE that much I am sure of...
siggisuperman - 2/3/2009, 11:45 AM
Damians is pretty good.

joxua1five - 2/3/2009, 11:45 AM
I totally overlooked Bashy's pic. It should definitely be top 5.
joxua1five - 2/3/2009, 11:47 AM
#1 Tony Vassallo's - great colors and originality
#2 Eric Dobronsky - love the black & white details, plus the fight scene looks great
#3 Jin's entry- very realistic
