"Hulk Vs." Fan Art Contest Winners Announced!

James Huang of Yonkers wins $200 and a "Hulk Vs" DVD. Plus 5 other entrants will be receiving DVDs. See who won here. Thanks to all who entered our HulkVs. fan art contest!
Man, this was a tough call. So many excellent entries! But 5 dutiful CBM editors agonized over all the entries. All of us had very different criteria for their picks, and the final vote made James Huang the Grand Prize winner.

Here's what we found out about James:
James has always loved drawing since he was a kid and with the added affinity for comic books and cartoons, it just ignited his passion for it. Not being able to have any formal training and schooling in arts, he resorted to online tutorials and tips in magazines like Sketch and Wizard during his free time. James has done art using charcoal, pen and pencils mostly all his life but on October 2007, he decided to get a Graphire and try digital painting. Since then he couldn't let go of it and is now a member of the Deviantart community. Now at 31, he still loves art and comic books as much as he did back then and trying to improve his skills whenever he can.

The 5 other DVD winners were chosen via a drawing from among all the submissions and are listed below. You can see all their artwork by clicking on their names.

Nice job to all the winners, that's wuz up!!!!!!
Spock - 2/10/2009, 10:55 AM
congrats. not the ones i would have picked, but if i want to complain i can go become editor of my own website.

so, $100 go to art supplies and the other $100 to comics?
thwip - 2/10/2009, 10:57 AM
wow who made these picks? james was the only deserving one out of the six names mentioned.
grif - 2/10/2009, 10:57 AM
I really liked Jenny Bornen's Entry (http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/HulkVs/galleries/?g=41&i=1705)... Something totally original.

I thought that one was in the top 5 for sure because it was so creative...
Nathan Best - 2/10/2009, 11:05 AM
Congrats guys
Rorschach01 - 2/10/2009, 11:28 AM
It was really tough to pick the grand prize winner. You should know that we went back and forth between 6-7 entries--and discussed skill, layout, action techniques, etc.

As for the other "runner-ups" we did a drawing. You know... Put all the names in a hat, shake it up and pull out 5 other names. That was the only way that everybody got a chance at a DVD. So they weren't chosen on skill, etc.

We hit Lionsgate up for more copies of the DVD, but they didn't want to give us any more--that is why the announcement took so long.

Not to worry though. There will be plenty more chances to win, and we're probably going to have a fan art contest going continually.

ComicBookMovie - 2/10/2009, 11:58 AM
Rorschach, your bale avatar, with that message, is priceless.

Congrats James! Awesome Pic! You're one of the reasons I didn't even bother entering! haha. Great job all around. A lot of cool entries.
Coats - 2/10/2009, 12:35 PM
Really, out of a hat? Oh well. At least you could have done different categories so people could have won for effort as well as skill.

I bet that will really inspire people to spend countless hours drawing to enter your next contest. Why not just draw stick figures.
Pidge - 2/10/2009, 12:38 PM
haha, so it is! ...hey coats is that John Constantine as your avatar?
Rorschach01 - 2/10/2009, 12:44 PM
i agree with pidge, you should have different categories. Its not fair to some of these artists who did only pencils. There were some great pencil entries and its not fair to put that against a painted piece. As for the runners up....they were definitely picked out of a hat!
magog29 - 2/10/2009, 12:44 PM
Out of a hat?! Really!
Pathetic.....
Majnun - 2/10/2009, 1:12 PM
It wouldn't be fair to any others that entered the contest with just as much work put into their drawing but unfortunitally less experience. This way it was fair to every single one that entered regardless of experience or classes taken. I'm glad i participated even though i didn't win anything and i wouldn't waste a second's time hesitating to re-enter. The point of this contest wasn't just to have the best drawing, it was to gather up as much fan art as possible and show it to the masses. It was a great experience :)
Shaman - 2/10/2009, 1:16 PM
congrats james. i actually had to go out and buy my copy of Hulk Vs. but it was soooo worth it. good job to all the other contestants.
UncleEd - 2/10/2009, 1:28 PM
out of a hat? what was the point of US choosing the winners in that other article? there was like 400 comments. i guess they all meant nothing.
grif - 2/10/2009, 1:32 PM
quit crying grimace
fair is fair and the best one was chosen
congrats to everyone winning the DVD
it is a great movie film and I love vs. Thor one so very much
realfirstavenger - 2/10/2009, 1:48 PM
...at least jin's "entry" didn't win anything...

Congrats James. Awesome work!
sniktchick74 - 2/10/2009, 1:58 PM
Congrats James. That is a spectacular piece. Congrats to all the other winners as well, excellent work all around. I'm glad to have seen so many pieces of art from so many different sources. It was great. It makes me EXTREMELY hopeful for the next Fan-Art contest. CBM, whenever you're ready for that one, I'm ready to go.

As for the "out of a hat" drawings; they said thats what they were going to do in the last article to make it fair for everyone. So, before you start bitching at them, it was a way to make the playing field completely level. It may not be the best way to do it, but EVERYONE who entered got a shot at winning. Fair is fair, yo.

IonParallax - 2/10/2009, 2:10 PM
Everyone could have had a shot at winning if they had used different categories. And it would have still given people a chance regardless of skill or experience. I don't remember them saying they were going to pick out of a hat or I would have said then that it was a silly idea. Not saying they didn't say that, but I apparently missed it.
I'm not bitching at them, just think they should've cowboy'd up and decided. Not a big deal, but I wouldn't spend a lot of time and effort for on a picture (if I was in any way, shape, or form artistic-- which I am not, haha) knowing that.
Regardless, congrats James!
Pidge - 2/10/2009, 2:16 PM
not crying about it just saying that decision pole was pointless.
grif - 2/10/2009, 2:18 PM
Well it was to help them determine THE winner of 200$ and not the other winners.
Shaman - 2/10/2009, 2:37 PM
OK, OK guys. First let me clarify some things.

1. The grand prize was judged by 5 CBM editors. We each took our top three choices, narrowed down to the ones we agreed upon, and then debated the reasons why one should win over the other. Seriously, if we could've given 6 grand prizes we would've. They were all equally well done. Many of the names you mentioned were in there.

2. We held a DRAWING for the remaining 5 DVDs. We didn't have an actual hat and put everybodys name in it - but we did the electronic equivalent of letting the computer randomly pick 5 of the entries. Is there a more fair way to do it so that anyone regardless of skill can have a chance?

3. We kept it simple and only had ONE category because we didn't have a lot of prizes to give away. We would have had more than 5 categories if we separated every entry into pencil, ink, watercolor, colored pencil, computer generated, cut and paste, humorous, stylistic, action oriented, under 14, etc. As I mentioned, we tried to get more copies. We asked for 30, but they wouldn't give us more than six. Sorry. we tried.

Anyway, I hope you all try again with the next one we'll be announcing this week. We already have the prize that has been donated. It's an awesome $200 sumo sac. So, I thought we could do topic like: Draw your favorite hero being as lazy as possible. Sort of an Inaction drawing.

What do you think?
ComicBookMovie - 2/10/2009, 3:04 PM
JamesH congratulation Man! Congratulations to Kristyne too... hey don´t forget to keep some of the money for te royalties of that T-Shirt ok? haha -just kidding.

-Great Work. You were my 1st place choice back in the other article. I defended your work because you are absolutely right, IT IS NEW AND DIFFERENT. The debate is over.

SirJediFrank - 2/10/2009, 3:21 PM
I like the idea of the next topic and I'm definitely joining in this time! But what's a sumo sack and why is it 200 bucks? Just looks like a big pillow to me. Plus, will there be another DVD that will go to the runners-up or what?
ElBeaster - 2/10/2009, 3:28 PM
I can throw in some swag DVDs too I suppose.
ComicBookMovie - 2/10/2009, 3:42 PM
As for the next topic, I was under the impression we were going with my topic on the Green Lantern creation? If not I will keep the article until you guys are ready for that one. Whatever you want to do is fine with me, but I know people who are already clamoring for the GL contest and I'd really like to go through with it because I want to use the contestants entries for my ongoing GL series that I will start when I get some art for it. BUT, like I said, whatever works for you guys.
IonParallax - 2/10/2009, 4:08 PM
OK OK OK everybody stop complaining. as some say, it was about participating and yes, at the beginning they kind of proposed that the " 6 Top artists" would all get a DVD, plus the $200 for the first place,:-
------
"4. On January 31st, our crack team of ComicBookMovie.com editors will judge the best entries and announce the prize winners on our site. The top 6 artists will win a copy of Marvel's latest animated movie, and the picture voted the BEST will also receive $200 smackers!"
-------
.-but then, seeing the the enthusiasm of the fans and in order to motivate EVERYONE to enter, they encouraged us take an opinion on the subject:
-----
" There were so many awesome entries for our HulkVs fan art contest, that we want your input to choose the winners."
--
and also tried to make it more "fair game", where the most important thing is to participate, REMEMBER, the intention was to pick ONE winner:
---
"We have 5 other copies of the DVD to give away but all the entries are so good, we are trying to see if Lionsgate will give us more. Those will be given out via a drawing -- meaning, we'll put all your names in a hat and simply pull out the ones who will get a DVD. That way EVERYBODY has a chance at a prize. Hopefully, Lionsgate will give us a ton more so we can reward more of you for your excellent efforts."
----

So to conclude, the CBM staff was always clear that they ultimately had the final word about it, so besides the initial "top 6", the last article had the intention to let EVERYONE have a chance.

.-CBM:_ maybe you should take down the respective LINKS from the 5 other winners listed, and list just the names, since they didn´t win for the linked-Entry itself, but won via the computer just FOR their names randomly.

SirJediFrank - 2/10/2009, 4:11 PM
At least Rob "No Hands" Liefield didnt win!!! GReat work everyone.... Ok i am sold i want to learn to color via me compoooter. Graphire looks great! congrats again to all!
shibazz - 2/10/2009, 4:14 PM
Congradulations!
TheSoulEater - 2/10/2009, 4:20 PM
Yes! That he is. I used to use the beard hunter from Doom Patrol, but thought that was a bit too obscure... John and his pint work well enough. He puts a happy cheer in my comments.
Coats - 2/10/2009, 4:32 PM
congratulations james ;) Damn now I'm going to have to download the movie, cuz you cant buy it in Iceland :(
siggisuperman - 2/10/2009, 4:39 PM
more contests would be cool sure. do
watchmen
transformers
gi joe
green lantern
wonderwoman
terminator

these will all be on dvd by the end of the year.
grif - 2/10/2009, 4:43 PM
Okay so I read that the remaining "winners" were chosen via computer in the interest of "making it fair." That is NOT an art contest then-it was a cop out! In no offense to those "randomly drawn", there were multiple other DESERVING entrants that should have been awarded the other 5 spots based on ART & SKILL (what an art contest IS!), thus the other 5 that DID get picked have a shallow victory. The computer could've randomly picked a stick drawing according to the method used to pick the final 5 winners.

Bottom line, the would be judges flaked & RIPPED off people that truly deserved the prize after the skill, time & effort put into their work ONLY to be shut down cause of a RANDOM computer drawing! VERY LAME & POOR TASTE! Condolences to those artist that entered, deserved to place as it was OBVIOUSLY a WASTE of time & effort in the end!
Sp1kethesequel - 2/10/2009, 4:49 PM
FYI, We WILL be doing a Watchmen fan art contest possibly on the 24th. Stay tuned for details. Prizes will be the Watchm Comic Movie and Tales of the Black Freighter DVD.

Also, ION, we can go ahead and do your contest on your site too. I'll show you how to set it up and let you know what prizes we have that we can offer for it. I'll shoot you an email to go over it in a sec.
ComicBookMovie - 2/10/2009, 4:55 PM
P.S. A "$200" SUMO SAC!?! It DID NOT say $200 in prizes. It said "WIN $200!"

Comic Book Movie the truth hurts, but this IS the truth. You screwed some WELL DESERVING artists as well as changed the cash prize-again poor taste & poorly handled.
Sp1kethesequel - 2/10/2009, 4:55 PM
Sp1kethesequel,
You didn't even enter the contest, so stop trolling.
ComicBookMovie - 2/10/2009, 5:07 PM
Oddly, Supermike is strangely absent.
ComicBookMovie - 2/10/2009, 5:09 PM
One question, does the girl come with the sumo sac?
If not, I'm calling false advertising. I don't see any notice on that website stating that the incredibly good looking lady sitting on the sumo sac doesn't come with it.

What about it, CBM? :)

(Disclaimer: Coats in no way supports or endorses the selling, trading, or buying of people, no matter how good looking they are.)
Coats - 2/10/2009, 5:10 PM
Congrats on all the winning art!
tbarnett - 2/10/2009, 5:42 PM
I laughed when read I the rest of the comments & especially when CBM --GALACTuS has to get on here to correct people!!! Thats just to funny!!!!!!!!!

CBM---------I can hear the old Sean Connery voice now!!!!!
Spock - 2/10/2009, 5:43 PM
Hey coats check out my Sandman editorial..Johhny boys in there too!
Rorschach01 - 2/10/2009, 5:50 PM
Sweet! Well, whenever you send your mail and give me thdetails, I'm ready to go. I've got the article written and just need your input. I can only HOPE half as many people enter my contest as they did for the Hulk Vs. Although mines somewhat difficult. You'll all see what I mean when I post the article.

Supermike is gone. POOF! Like a generic magic trick he disappeared never to be heard from again...I can only hope that's true. Freakin' troll.

Sp1ke, try reading ALL of the comments thoroughly. That prize is for the NEXT CONTEST. Not this one. I am quoting Galactus here on this:
"...We already have the prize that has been donated. It's an awesome $200 sumo sac...."
IonParallax - 2/10/2009, 5:56 PM
Nice "professionalism" from one that runs a site. I merely stating that this contest was falsely advertised as was the prize. There were others that deserved to place and were cheated their prizes after displaying their talent. It is not to insult others, but it was a contes-bottom line.

I understand trying to keep it fair, but a contest is based on talent. There are going to be losers with lesser talent, that is life. If it was to be a random drawing with a computer choosing the results, it should have been stated-but it wasn't.

Further more, whether I myself, a relative, friend or what have you entered or not-you do not know. I came here and stated whats obvious in a professional manner. I would've expected those that moderate this site to act professional as opposed to casting insults. The same way you handle a customer in a store with respect & professionalism, it should be carried over by those that run a site. Learn to be a professional before you decide to act like a juvenile shooting insults at your guests before running a site.
Sp1kethesequel - 2/10/2009, 5:59 PM
wow congrats dats a nice pic better than how i draw
prinzjoker - 2/10/2009, 6:10 PM
Sp1kethesequel,

What would have been the difference if they just chose ONE winner? They still would have chose that entry as the winner. From your perspective, The top artists still would have had tried their best to win. If they were the best in the judges' eyes, the VERY top talent would still have won.
Consider it a bonus that there were 5 other chances to win a dvd.

Very cool of comicbookmovie to do this. Hopefully, nobody negative ruins it for the gracious readers/visitors who appreciate you all running the contest! Hopefully I can get in on the next one. I knew what I had wanted to do on this one, but not enough time to get one done I was happy with. Congrats to everyone! Great job!
deadshot77 - 2/10/2009, 6:44 PM
The prize wasn't falsely advertised. The winner is gettin the DVD PLUS 200$! What part of that don't you understand?

Well, then you should probably go and run your own site if you don't like how this one is being ran. You don't own it, nor do you work for it. This ISN'T a store and you're not paying for anything. You are a guest here and if you don't like it, go to another where they treat you much nicer and maybe even give you a complimentary Bellini to sip while you do whatever it is that you do.

Again, they weren't falsely advertising ANYTHING, as I stated, the winner is getting exactly what was stated they would recieve. CBM didn't insult you, he told you to basically stop whining. If you enterned the contest and din't win anything, WAH! Bitterness should only be a flavor and not a way of life. Out of 45 posts, there are 3 people complaining, YOU, Pidge and Grif. Grif ALWAYS complains, that's his job and he does it quite nicely. As for Pidge, I don't have a comment on that one, haven't seen the name enough to make an opinion yet either.

I do believe Thwip said it best in the 3rd comment;
"congrats. not the ones i would have picked, but if i want to complain i can go become editor of my own website."

IonParallax - 2/10/2009, 6:46 PM
I will most definitely enter the Watchmen contest and try to win the Black Freighter DVD!

And I'm sorry if someone you know spent two days of their free time drawing a picture! It's not like it was a contest where you had to build a robot. The best man won.
ElBeaster - 2/10/2009, 6:54 PM
Kristine (busy at work) and I (got no work) would like to thank all the guys and gals here who supported our work... as well as those who said it was fake (it helped draw attention). LOL. Our gratitude as well to CBM for holding the contest and for the great prizes! Im a huge Marvel fan and i juz couldn't miss this one. :D More contests to come!!!

JamesH - 2/10/2009, 7:06 PM
It was never an argument, whining or insulting on my part. In addition it has nothing to do with the grand prize winner. It was simply stating that the other 5 shouldn't have been chosen via random choice of a computer. It was a contest, be a judge & pick based on talent-not a random choice of a machine. It robs those that really put out some great work.

In addition, any place whether it be physical store or internet site, if is representing themselves as a premier site or location, yes there is a level of professionalism when dealing with your visitors. As opposed to being insulting.
Sp1kethesequel - 2/10/2009, 7:38 PM
to CBM,

i hope next time you should also consider that the participants should be atleast an active member of CBM.

We dont want fan-art contest hunters to be joining and winning CBM's fan art contest. In fairness to all of CBM active members who also wants to win the contest...

just my suggestion...

what do you think guys?

CONGRATS TO ALL THE WINNERS and PARTICIPANTS!!! i hope i can join next contest
parascythe - 2/10/2009, 7:57 PM
Nice pic, but there should be a seperate catagory for Photoshop artist, and just traditional artist. I think (and not saying you are JamesH) Photoshopping a picture can make a mediocre artist look alot better, rather then a real artist who draws out detail and puts actual effort into the piece rather then have a pc do it for you. Thats just my take, you should take into consideration actual penciled/inked in detail over nice crisp computer generated color. Thats just my take, anyhow, great piece , congrats
JuneTheMachine - 2/10/2009, 8:01 PM
anyways, im new here, whats up to all. I follow this site daily, but decided to finally start posting with u all, anyways, wazzzzzzzuppppppppppppp!!!!
JuneTheMachine - 2/10/2009, 8:04 PM
@june,

real artist?! so you are saying those who do photoshop are not "real artist"?

nowadays it is more practical for artist to thier work digitally because it is more cost effective...have you gone to art school? student artists are now learning both traditional and digital works...so you cant say traditional artist are better than digital artist...
parascythe - 2/10/2009, 8:25 PM
while i continue to speak to myself, just realized james is from yonkers ny, as i am too, small world this is...
JuneTheMachine - 2/10/2009, 8:29 PM
i havent gone to art school. not everyone has access to expensive programs like photoshop, and expensive hardware like tablets and such. I myself, just started using photoshop 3 yrs ago, and before then, i couldnt afford the program, the good enough computer to do the art, and the tablet. So i see it from both ends. and i wasnt saying that traditional artist are better, i was saying that simply, mediocre artist can look better using photoshop. Can that not be possible?
JuneTheMachine - 2/10/2009, 8:34 PM
@ June, i cant blame you totally for saying what you said coz you probably havent tried using Photoshop and other softwares for doing art. True, there are techniques that would make coloring easy by using a computer but for any person who knows how to use the computer, one can easily tell a rush job from one that was spent lotsa hours on.

Its not like a fill tool where you juz press and you get all the colors with gradients and shadows. Nope. Its totally not like that. I use Photoshop in everything from initial sketch, to lineart, to colors, to fixes (as you can see in my work progression in the other thread). TBH, if a mediocre artist uses Photoshop without any practice or previous know-how, his/her work would end up looking worse.

@ Parascythe
TBH, I and Kristine knew of this site because of the contest. Before i knew of the contest, i didnt know this site existed! im a huge HUGE comic book fan (Marvel mostly)and comicbookmovies as well and whether we'll join more contests or not, consider me a regular at this site! As for contest hunters who juz join in for the sake of winning alone, how would one know which is which? But i do understand your point though.
JamesH - 2/10/2009, 8:44 PM
^see last post^
JuneTheMachine - 2/10/2009, 8:48 PM
@ June, honestly... i only started using Photoshop and Graphire juz around a year and a half ago. I learned by myself reading online tutorials from different sites and youtube vids. You dont need to go to an artschool to learn art... coz i havent. Im not as good as a pro and i have a lot to learn but anyone can reach their level with enough time, hardwork and love for art. :)

I dont believe that a mediocre artist can make art better with photoshop. A mediocre artist can be better with any tool he practices with... be it pencil, watercolor, clay or photoshop. If you get a professional charcoal painter and present him with photoshop, im sure his work wouldnt be as good as the tools he's used to. :)

JamesH - 2/10/2009, 8:53 PM
June, all comments are welcome (unless you're a chachbag) so, in the spirit of brotherhood, welcome aboard. As you have seen, this can be a very exciting site with plenty to banter on about. Even things that have NOTHING to do with the article at hand. But, it's fun and there's plenty of people here who are quite cool. You've got your run of the mill commenters, arguers, complainer, uplifters, jokers, sages and neophytes. Foreign and homegrown, great diversity. (That's why this place rocks) MOST of whom have relevant comments or suggestions. Some who just seem to pop off at the mouth for no reason. Then others who get to be the brunt of jokes. Such as Supermike, our resident troller. Who may have changed names recently.

Again, welcome aboard.

Sequel, nobody insulted you. He said "stop trolling". That's not an insult, it's a command.
IonParallax - 2/10/2009, 8:57 PM
dude, this doesnt have to be a long and drawn out( no pun) issue. This is a matter of opinion, so this can go on forever. I also, didnt go to any art school at all, not even in High school. So i understand you, i usually learn thru trial and error anyways.

Ps, im no Dooshbeg,so your good.
JuneTheMachine - 2/10/2009, 8:59 PM
@jamesH,

no worries, im not talking about you. i saw you posting comments on threads before this contest appear. so, that makes you IMHO a valid contestant.

I think CBM admin can monitor it somehow. i hope contestants could be atleast a member a month or two here in CBM. Or if they have better idea of how to control contest hunters...
parascythe - 2/10/2009, 9:13 PM
and trial and error is the best if you ask me. ;) And no probs bro... its certainly no issue at all. And welcome to the site! :)

JamesH - 2/10/2009, 9:14 PM
i cant wait until the next contest, im looking foward to it
JuneTheMachine - 2/10/2009, 9:30 PM
any deviantart james?
parascythe - 2/10/2009, 10:10 PM
wow
CBM didnt have to run a contest at all
if anyone found drawing their entries not worth it for the contest, dont do it again and move on with life
someone won some prizes, we all got to look at great art
my god you whiners make me want to punch babies
realfirstavenger - 2/10/2009, 10:39 PM
whats crackin newbie?! Ya know i have to agree the reality is this all art is different and not created equally. I would hesitate to separate the categories in the contests here but i would never show my paintings next to another artist who uses photoshopping or paint programs to work out the finer points of any image. You lose mystery if you do and hence any magic that is in the creative process. That being said i love anyone who has become a craftsmen in their given technique. Also i loved it when Computers became the main tool in coloring a comic. It was just sexy! But still computers are like light bulbs compared to candles ... the candles being a traditionally created piece.
shibazz - 2/10/2009, 10:48 PM
Congrats to all the winners. Their artwork was truly amazing. And now
That the contest is over, can we get over the Jin issue already??
Nothing more needed to be said about it. Especially from sore losers
who also didn't win!!
TheHammer - 2/10/2009, 11:13 PM
Grand prize was well earned. Congratulations.
WeaponX - 2/10/2009, 11:42 PM
@shibazz, thanx for the welcome. I get what your saying, ive actually done fairly well doing both. As ive been doing photoshop for 3 years now. i wasnt knocking anyone using it, i use it myself, just brought it up. Anyhow thanx for the welcome...
JuneTheMachine - 2/10/2009, 11:53 PM
First, congratulations James, you certainly earned it. Your work is very original, I certainly hope you continue to post more work. You need to get picked up by a publisher and exposed a bit. Submit something already!

As for the rest of the entries, you all won, because you all had the guts to put your art on the line to be judged by some pretty harsh critics and are better people for it. It takes a lot of character to dare to try to win, and you all did, so you all won as far as I'm concerned. Congratulations to you all.

Now the rant. There seems to be a bit of a debate as to what constitutes "art", or at the least what medium is considered to be legitimate as to how "art" is produced, which is nonsense. Allow me to elaborate;

If any of you have ever picked up Spectrum, you should have noticed a couple of things. First, they get the best of the best to decide what "winning art" is, as to place (an entry) in the book, they judge, and on many criteria. Let there be no doubt that the artists they get to do the deciding are all highly accomplished artists in their own right having worked with a multitude of mediums, and not just a bunch of fans of comic-art coming to a site to ridicule someone else's work , having not coughed up any of their own for judgment. Having said that, we come to; Second...the book itself is divided into sections by genre. Interesting, huh? Not separated by medium, but genre. For instance, Spectrum 14's gold winner in the genre of Comics was Adam Hughes, a genius in his own right. His winning entry, a piece titled Wanda-Lust, was done in Pen & Ink... and digital. Imagine that. A merger of two very different and distinct mediums (because if a "medium" is the material or technique with which an artist works, then digital is a medium and is respected as such in the art world), combined to produce one beautiful piece of art. Amongst the pages of artwork you will find within the sections of genres pieces of art of all mediums, all together sharing pages.

The point is, regardless of how you produced the piece, whether you have the talent to recreate what you see in your mind using manual dexterity and a pencil, or hand-eye-mind coordination and Photoshop, if you are able to reproduce what you see in your imagination with a "medium" you are proficient in (ESPECIALLY if you get paid for it), you are an artist. Keep in mind, if art is subjective, then so are artists. To say one person is an artist because he used gouache and one is not because he used a usb-tablet is simply ignorant. It can take just as much time and effort to produce digitally what someone else produces through brush.

All one really need do to find out is try either.

Again, congratulations to you James!

Sp1kethesequel- "It was a contest, be a judge & pick based on talent-not a random choice of a machine. It robs those that really put out some great work."

What you don't seem to get is that "THE contest" was for 1 prize. The judges had to choose "THE best" and award him or her the win. They did it and in a very professionnal manner as well.

The other DVDs were "BONUSES" which were to be handed over on account of "participating" (Not being the second best). Sadly they only had 5 "EXTRA" DVDs and to be "FAIR", they "DREW" 5 names randomly. They could have easily said "Well the winner is James, he gets the prize, that's all folks, thank you everybody, good night!" but they didn't. They were kind and generous enough to give them to us when they could've given them to friends and family. THAT was HIGHLY professionnal!!!

I submitted my art and won nothing... NAH-THING!!! Do you hear me complain about it??? HELL NO!!! Where's your submission? All that your doing right now is shit on the generosity of CBM and MASSACRE "OUR" (the regular posters, as well as people who actually submitted their hard-worked art) chances of them giving us freebies just for "participating" for the next contests to come. SO IF YOU'RE ONLY PURPOSE IS TO COME HERE AND BITCH AND TARNISH "OUR" HIGHLY ANTICIPATED CONTESTS, THEN GO TROLL ELSEWHERE!!! If you're not contributing, you're "trolling"! Who the [frick] are you to come here and troll in our community?!?!?! Contribute or get the [frick] off!!!

I think the best part about the contests is having your art posted for everyone on here to see. I know that I can't compare to most of these artist, but I will be so pshyched to have my art posted. Can't wait for the next contest and I definitely won't miss out a second time.

Shaman - 2/11/2009, 4:40 PM
Yeah remember it is about contributing. In this case, to help bring to images Ion´s stories right?

..i suck drawing but those of you who can, yes you should give it a shot.

CBM: Nice detail to have Jin´s "Entry" as the image for the main Featurete for the results of the contest haha, that was a good one! ;-]
(like that some surely thought:
WHAAAAT?! JIN WON!!? WTF?!! "#$# CBM!! ) lol :-]
SirJediFrank - 2/11/2009, 5:01 PM

Shaman - 2/11/2009, 5:50 PM
@gtrman, great post. Very informative. Its funny, but i actually use the pencil/ink to digital medium aswell, and i feel it works great for my style. Im going to have to google Adam Hughes to see some of his work.

JuneTheMachine - 2/11/2009, 6:44 PM
ADAM HUGHES IS THE MAN!!! He is IMHO, the best artist to draw "women" as they should be drawn. He is very inspiring to me :)
Shaman - 2/12/2009, 5:25 AM
@ shaman
AH! is definitely the man! He's one of my fave artists ever and he has made dozens of my fave Catwoman and Wonderwoman covers! And what i love about his style is that its very distinct from others and his superheroines actually have muscles but are still sexy!
