RUMOR: Is Guillermo Del Toro Developing the Red Hulk as a Villain in His HULK TV Show?

A source contacted Comic Vine with a bit of information on ABC's new Hulk television Show. Click the jump to see my reasons why this rumor is quite possible.

Then, this morning I received the following brief e-mail.

“David Eick and Guillermo del Toro submitted a treatment that includes the development of the Red Hulk as a villain. Thought you might like to know”

Courtesy of Comic Vine

Why is this rumor possible? Well, Guillermo del Toro who is producing the new television show has already said that the show will not follow the templates of the films, but in fact be based more so on the comics. Let's look at his comments in an interview with MTV. He said, "Jeph Loeb is in the project. Pak's Hulk is great. Loeb's Hulk is great. There's so many things in the Hulk universe that are powerful strands of narrative, that they know are being faithful to those strands, and the movies have their own continuity."

Why is that quote so important? Well as for the Rulk (nickname for the Red Hulk), the mere mention of Jeph Loeb's involvement is crucial to the rumor. Now you can put some meat behind it. Jeph Loeb was the writer during the Rulk saga, and for several years the Red Hulk outsold the Green Hulk by leaps and bounds.

So why is that important? Well, the producers right off the bat know that they have a piece of the comic that was popular. They could hope that the success of that angle will translate to the television series. Part of the fun of the Rulk was that it was a mystery as to whom he was. Readers kept feeding into the mystery each month hoping for a clue, a hint of his true origins.

The mystery of the character is something the show would most likely explore. In the comics it was revealed that General Thunderbolt Ross was in fact the Red Hulk. General Ross has usually been portrayed in film and the comics as the hunter to Banner's Hulk. Constantly on the heels of his capture, only to come up short time and time again. He is also the father to Betty Ross, the girlfriend of Bruce Banner, so that adds an element to the cat and mouse chase.

In conclusion, Guillermo's show will be comic based, Jeph Loeb will be giving input, and the character is immensely popular. As I said prior the Red Hulk's mystery was part of the fun, and a huge reason to read each month's new edition. So I would not be surprised to see the Red Hulk introduced again as a mystery for the show, but change whom the character ends up being.

This is just a rumor for now, so confirm or debunk below.

Sure. why not
jjmeylar - 9/5/2011, 8:15 PM
I think that they should wait until the second or third season.
JustDame - 9/5/2011, 8:16 PM
I really disliked Loeb and McGuinness' run on Hulk. It was terrible, in my opinion. Lol, i'd prefer they not do it.
santoanderson - 9/5/2011, 8:17 PM
I would love to comment but there's a giant frickin' FRINGE ad covering the article...
darksinner - 9/5/2011, 8:19 PM
they should show like a teaser of a sort at the end of season 1.. would help build the suspense for the next season. thats what i think at least
Lizardking310 - 9/5/2011, 8:20 PM
i think he should be saved for later seasons after all he is gen ross and he should be used in his human form more than his red hulk form
mikehev - 9/5/2011, 8:21 PM
One of the reasons it outsold the green hulk was because there was no green hulk. Loeb's run replaced Pak's Incredible Hulk run. I think alot of people thought Marvel was selling alot of books because of the mystery surrounding the Red Hulk character. Personally, I think it had more to do with people hoping that the Green Scar persona that Pak made popular would return to the book. I remember alot of anticipation leading up to the Green Scar's return, but not many people caring about the Red Hulk.
mikehev - 9/5/2011, 8:23 PM
I'm more excited about them using the version of Hulk that Pak made famous in Planet Hulk than I am in them having him fight the Red Hulk.
ROMACK - 9/5/2011, 8:25 PM
@jjmeyler- Agreed. they should wait a couple of seasons before bringing in the Red Hulk.
BrotherFromAnother - 9/5/2011, 8:27 PM
This show being on ABC, probably will be more drama than actual action. I don't have high hopes for this show. Now if a cable network got a hold of it they could get away with more "mature" type action.

Warning, I spoil Rulk's identity here.

I don't like this, for a reason different that you expect. Once Jeff Parker took on the character and fully embraced the Red Hulks alter ego general ross, he became incredibly interesting. Ross is a great character, period. If you go straight to him as Rulk, I think you might miss out on alot of the character. You might be better off saving him for future seasons.

There is no Reason For The Hulk show to start off as a Orgin, they should do a montage and drop us right into the action, then tie the pieces together. The Leader And Doc Samson will most definitely be present, but waiting until the 3rd season to introduce The Rulk Is stupid, who says it will even last that long.So if your going to build up a mystery you need to start from the beginning, so sick of Origins done over and over "People Know The Flippin Story".So Lets Go For The Meat In The Pie, Throw She-Hulk In And Drive The Fan Boys Crazy. But Rulk Is A Must,Tell The Stories People Dont Know And Engage Them
Bartman87 - 9/5/2011, 9:06 PM
I wouldn't call what Ang Lee did as Abosorbing Man or The Hulk, but I think we are getting ahead of ourselves by talking about seasons 2 and 3 hell I'd be thankful for a full season if they do it right. ABC isn't known for keeping shows on the air unless they have outstanding numbers even if the show is good, plus it doesn't really support Sci-fi premised shows.
CrashTest - 9/5/2011, 9:10 PM
not in season 1. Ballz out if so, so shit why not. I say do it!
SigmaCenturion - 9/5/2011, 9:18 PM
Don't understand what is with the rush to develop new characters so fast and blowing over established characters I just don't understand it.
Fonzieismypal - 9/5/2011, 9:18 PM
I kinda expect Del Toro to use mostly animatronics rather than tons of CG. Eh, he's a classy guy. He's not gonna Smallville this show. haha
Coloso - 9/5/2011, 9:39 PM
I have it on good authority that Chloe Moretz is auditioning for the Red Hulk!

What do you guys think? ;D

Kurbbsyde - 9/5/2011, 10:53 PM
I gotta say although I think Del Toro would handle it well using Rulk, I don't think it should be the initial villian at least
