BOX OFFICE: IRON MAN 3 Breaks Records In China; Hits $240 Million Internationally

Making it a co-production with DMG clearly paid off for Marvel Studios! Iron Man 3 has broken the records set by Michael Bay's Transformers: Dark of the Moon in China after opening on 2,500 screens for midnight showings. Read on for details.

According to The Wrap, Iron Man 3 took $2.1 million form midnight showings in China to demolish the record set by Transformers: Dark of the Moon's explosive $1.9 million debut back in 2011. This bodes well for the superhero threequel as that film went on to gross $145 million in China, while The Avengers earned $91 million. DMG Entertainment (the company who helped finance the movie and is distributing it in the country) sold over 300,000 tickets across over 1,100 theatres. The site adds that the Chinese version features "about three minutes of footage in Mandarin, shown without English subtitles. Chinese star Fan BingBing's cameo appearance went over well, but several blatant placements of Chinese products drew hoots in at least one theater." Iron Man 3's success in China will ultimately impact its chances of hitting the elusive $1 billion mark, although a strong international opening - where its total is now at $242.1 million says The Hollywood Reporter - and high predictions for its North American debut may have seen to that!

Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3 pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Wow. It's already blown Green Lantern global numbers out of the water and it hasn't even opened in North America. I know GL was a flop, but that is some quick cash!

Well, good job.
They butchered the Mandarin but at least they managed to milk the Chinese, which was their goal all along.
JoeMomma29 - 5/1/2013, 10:15 AM
Yup this movie will make bank.

Good for IM3, but I wouldn't say 2.1 million is demolishing 1.9 million.
ParisSun - 5/1/2013, 10:15 AM
Amazing. An American blockbuster can now make a profit before even hitting the North American market. This will happen more and more. I just hope being financed by foreign countries will not effect the message of a movie like Captain America.

they get my money tomorrow.
Ocelot - 5/1/2013, 10:18 AM
still dont know how or where those extra china scenes fit into the movie, without them coming across as "forced" or strange, especially the one with Iron Man in China in the old armor that clearly gets destroyed
FreedomFreeLife - 5/1/2013, 10:20 AM
First 2 weeks usually makes big money becuase people are going to watch, but later when people see how bad this movie is, then they wont go see it and wont earn so much.
For example Avatar. Avatar had very low start, but still earned almost 3 billion.
Some movie broke all records at 2 weeks, but in total made 800 million only.
jessepostal - 5/1/2013, 10:20 AM
People hate on Marvel about china and their involvement with this movie yet your prob typing your opinion on something that was made there. Irony!
CavEl - 5/1/2013, 10:24 AM
Kudos, but I seriouy doubt it will hit a Billion. Star Trek 2 will dethrone it, the movie doesn't have much in terms of rewatchability. You see it once, you have a couple of laughs, then you're done with it. 800 million is my number.
sephiroth211 - 5/1/2013, 10:24 AM
Hey Boom Boom Bay this is how you do it!!

JoeMomma29 - 5/1/2013, 10:24 AM
Umm the RT rate just dropped again. As it continues to drop that will show if people want to see this movie over and over.
Dminic - 5/1/2013, 10:24 AM
@ FreedomFreelife
800 milion only?????
I think you need to check normal box-office numbers, because 800 milion is not defined as only...
RPD - 5/1/2013, 10:26 AM
We need to finance the next James Bond so we can get it before the Brits...
CavEl - 5/1/2013, 10:27 AM
The International critics lauded it with false praise, but the Americans aren't so nice. 85% on Rotten Tomatoes and they're just the first wave of reviewers. The first guys are ususally the nicest, the second is more the true consensus and the last is the rip your throat out reviewers. Iron Man 3 could see a drop to 77% fresh by the Tim's this is over.
JoeMomma29 - 5/1/2013, 10:28 AM
After Friday I will decide if I want to see this movie again.
ekrolo2 - 5/1/2013, 10:33 AM
China is an untapped gold mine for Hollywood. I believe they only allow about 40 films into the country a year (might be wrong about that). I wonder if some of the bad word of mouth is going to hurt the opening weekend gross in America.
JoeMomma29 - 5/1/2013, 10:36 AM
@ekrolo2 naw there will be great turn out but I am sure there will be no repeat viewers as the first film or Avengers.
JoeMomma29 - 5/1/2013, 10:38 AM
@ kryptonian Trudy the Troll actually has every right to defend on this thread. my beef is the crap he starts on DC articles.
maryboo - 5/1/2013, 10:38 AM
I just hope Captain America doesn't become Captain China by the time the movie is over with all the blatant Chinese ass kissing that Marvel have been doing.
CavEl - 5/1/2013, 10:40 AM
@ 69ballZdeep - if you think I care who wins this pissing contest, you're wrong. I just want a kick ass Superman movie, Iron Man can make a trillion dollars and Man of Steel only
makes 501 million, if 501 is all WB feels is enough to get a sequel, that's all I care about Man of Steel getting. Enough for me to see a Superman trilogy.
SpectacularJoSh - 5/1/2013, 10:41 AM

Gmoney84 - 5/1/2013, 10:42 AM
Can people please stop with the DC vs. Marvel shit?? It's getting really old. Can't everybody just be happy we are getting so many quality CBM's?
AvengersRock - 5/1/2013, 10:43 AM
I finally get to say that I'm seeing this movie tomorrow!! I also have tickets for Friday morning already. I have faith that it will be worth it.

I have read comic books on and off for 35 years. Avengers was my favorite growing up and I've read my share of Iron Man comics. Whomever says don't see it because it doesn't follow the source material, who says it has to? I will judge the movie on its own merits, and everything I've seen and read says it will be the best solo outting yet. I'm ready for that!

In Marvel we trust!!!
dadisatish - 5/1/2013, 10:45 AM
star trek will eat its cash.....85% on rottentomatoes....numbers are dropping marvelites what do u say..????
Ceejay - 5/1/2013, 10:46 AM
@TheHouseofUl - You overrate Star Trek's popularity, it made very little money internationally, its only success was in the US domestic run and that was barely anything to shout about in terms of numbers.

Star Trek (2009)
Domestic = $257,730,019
International = $127,950,427
total worldwide B.O = $385,680,446

What Star Trek did in its entire run internationally, Iron Man 3 did in a weekend!
sephiroth211 - 5/1/2013, 10:46 AM
CavEl - 5/1/2013, 10:47 AM
@ Unibeam - I've seen the movie, I wasn't impressed. I didn't hate it, I just didn't love it. Meh is exactly what I would use to describe it. If someone asked me if they should watch the movie I would say "Yes, catch a matinee of it". Iron Man 3 isn't a good movie, its not very intriguing. It's funny, at times, but it's not one of Marcel's best. I rank it with Thor and Cap, I'd watch it if I saw it on TV, but I would never pop the DVD in by choice to rewatch it.

@ Remy - The real rating is a 7.3, Superman Returns was a 7/10. #perspective
SageMode - 5/1/2013, 10:49 AM
Battabing - 5/1/2013, 10:50 AM
Too bad it's a real shit show.
CavEl - 5/1/2013, 10:54 AM
@ CeeJay - That's the reboot effect. The only reboot that has made 400+ million dollars is TASM. Batman Begins made the same BO, but look what TDK pulled in.

Star Trek became a cult favorite, it didn't do well at first, but it will do well now since it is a proven commodity and the marketing has being superb. Plus, Star Trek, without a doubt, will be better than Iron Man 3. More heart, better romance, large scale, and it has big explosions.

perfect summer movie.
EarOne - 5/1/2013, 10:55 AM
i still don't see the big deal over the casting of the part that's supposed to go to Andy Lau. that part's hardly even a cameo, it was soooooo super brief.
