BOX OFFICE: IRON MAN 3 Finishes Weekend With A Mighty $174 Million

BOX OFFICE: IRON MAN 3 Finishes Weekend With A Mighty $174 Million

Surprisingly, Iron Man 3 ended its first weekend at the North American box office with slightly less than was predicted by most analysts, but it still had the second highest opening of all-time! Hit the jump for details on that and plenty of other figures.

Iron Man 3 didn't end up exceeding expectations at the North American box office this past weekend, but it most certainly finished exactly where most were expecting it to. While early estimates had it pegged as grossing a three day total of $175 million, it finished just shy of that with $174.1 million ($174,144,585 million to be exact). Not a bad result by any means, especially as that figure gives it the honour of having the second highest opening of all-time! Meanwhile, Studio System News obtained the following statement from IMAX in regards to how pleased they were with Iron Man 3's performance on their screens over the course of this weekend.

Thanks to Iron Man 3, this weekend is a global IMAX record, as we’ll generate nearly $30 mil from one movie for the first time in our company’s 46 year history ($16.5 mil domestically and $13 mil internationally). The global cume for Iron Man 3 in IMAX is estimated to be $40.2 mil as of Sunday evening.

Domestically, IM3 delivered $16.5 mil on 326 screens for a fantastic per screen average of $50,600 (remember, we’re a single screen business). Our biggest issue: the vast majority of our shows were sold out. This is the the 2nd best domestic opening in IMAX history.

Internationally, Iron Man 3′s IMAX results produced numerous records, generating approximately $13 mil this weekend on 267 IMAX screens for an outstanding per screen average of almost $50k. Again, sell out shows everywhere! This is all the more encouraging considering over 100 of the screens were on their second weekend of the film, confirming Iron Man 3′s word of mouth is strong.

There were record smashing IMAX openings in key territories, including China ($63k per screen), Russia ($72k per screen) and Ukraine ($46k per screen).

While it's still early days, some analysts are even taking a guess at how much they believe Iron Man 3 will ultimately end up grossing worldwide. $1.3 billion is currently the most popular answer, but we'll just have to wait and see! Either way, we'll be sure to keep you updated here on CBM.

Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3 pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man
Ben Kingsley as The Mandarin
Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts
Don Cheadle as Rhodey/War Machine
Guy Pearce as Aldrich Killian
Rebecca Hall as Dr. Maya Hansen
Ashley Hamilton as Jack Taggert

Wow! 12 of those dollars were from me!

Also, I predict $1.2 billion, not $1.3 billion, but whatever...
Brainiac13 - 5/6/2013, 1:02 PM
And £10 from me!!
SpiderParker - 5/6/2013, 1:07 PM
Iron Man 3 is the movie that fans deserve, but not the one they wanted. :P
JorL5150 - 5/6/2013, 1:07 PM
thats good whoring!
Kingdork - 5/6/2013, 1:08 PM
Well deserved!
Ryguy88 - 5/6/2013, 1:09 PM
Wow, huge weekend! The movie was just decent and The Mandarin was disappointing (especially because he seemed so cool and interesting in the trailer) but good on Marvel anyways.
ElDarkside - 5/6/2013, 1:12 PM
Damn you guys are paying too much. It was only $6.50 here in PA for 1:15pm matinee Sunday afternoon. No 3-D tho as I read it didn't really add to the viewing experience and was done post-production.

I always go to Saturday or Sunday matinees for all opening weekend movies I see. It's never packed like evening showings, although you still have to get there half hour early to get the best seats...
CharacterAssassin - 5/6/2013, 1:16 PM
Movie was average but if you want to be entertained, it's a go see movie. Although, it was hard to grasp what they reduced Kingsley to though. He could've been something but as we all know, behind the enemy mask and evil enterprises, it's always the white guy pulling the strings. It's almost like everyone else is too incompetent to be a villain in a cbm world.
JoeMomma29 - 5/6/2013, 1:16 PM
Congrats on the earnings on to the next one blockbuster!!!
SpiderParker - 5/6/2013, 1:20 PM
Yes, it was... It could have been better but it certainly wasn't bad. As for Iron Man 3, I kinda knew about the twist before watching it (thanks to a article with no spoiler warning), I still liked it although I really wanted to see The Real Mandarin. :/
LittleDanglyThing - 5/6/2013, 1:21 PM
I hope Thor 2 is better.
VIRILEMAN - 5/6/2013, 1:23 PM
charlie2094 - 5/6/2013, 1:23 PM
Glad it's done so well! Really enjoyed the film, best laughs I've had at the cinema for the while. Only disappointment in the twist, but that can be fixed, though I'm not too fussed now, but rather it was. Guessing this will mean an Iron Man 4 will be very likely for Phase 3, probably a 2017 release. Would never have guessed it'd open so big, predicted about $155 million, but not this much! Wonder how much of a boost Thor will take too, considering that made $449, coming off Avengers and a later release. I reckon $700-$800 is likely, but who knows. By the time Avengers 2 comes out, the MCU should be the highest grossing film franchise.
MarvelManiac - 5/6/2013, 1:24 PM
Guys, quit your whining!

A huge majority of average people liked it. Even a large majority of critics liked it. 78% on RT isn't bad, although it isn't as good as it could have been.

@Nomis, the second week drop isn't going to be that bad because it doesn't have much competition. If it gets $10M each weekday this week and then a 50% hold from last weekend, it'll still be approaching $300 Million in the US by its 10th day in theaters. That's damn good.

I expect Star Trek will unseat it in its third weekend, and some people think that's because its Star Trek, but in the third weekend, I expect IM3 will be down to around $50 Million, while Star Trek will probably hit $80-100 Million. That's VERY good for Star Trek, but it won't break any box office records, or even come close.

And big picture, this assures us that more CBMs will be made and get big budgets, which everyone should be looking forward to.
YoungThanos - 5/6/2013, 1:24 PM
The Great Gatsby won't be that great of an issue for IM3.

A 50% drop would still be over $80M granted the hardcore fans of Mandarin won't be seeing a second viewing or speaking highly of it to their peers.

ATrueHero1987 - 5/6/2013, 1:24 PM
@Nomis how you figure?
novaprime - 5/6/2013, 1:25 PM
Sad, all that was from the Mandarine Force asvertisement lol.. marvel knows how to take your Money Bitches!!!
charlie2094 - 5/6/2013, 1:30 PM
Doubt the second weekend drop is hardly going to be that bad. The only real bad word of mouth is from the "0.01%" of the audience on here, the general public seem to be really liking it.
subzero1077 - 5/6/2013, 1:31 PM
Biggest letdown in cinema history!
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 5/6/2013, 1:32 PM
Not a great way to start Phase 2. On a positive note, Thor looks amazing.
TheOneAboveAll - 5/6/2013, 1:32 PM
This is ridiculous, they should count amount of tickets sold. tickets to go watch an american movie in China are $50 USD each, add 3-D and it is even more expensive world wide.
novaprime - 5/6/2013, 1:33 PM

novaprime - 5/6/2013, 1:34 PM
Hopefully Thor!!! will Stop me From Having Ironman 3 nightmares
JoeMomma29 - 5/6/2013, 1:38 PM
Awww Nomis you are so correct, I do have respect for the all the Marvle fans who are liking the movie for what it is and those who are being honest with themselves and are not calling this a masterpiece!!!!

But you got to love those delusional Marvelites who are up their with the Nolanites who cannot take any criticism of any type, but their reasoning it made a lot of money! So it has to be good!
SpideyQuad - 5/6/2013, 1:39 PM
toiletbowl -You stink! :-)
brazilianbatman - 5/6/2013, 1:41 PM
its going to make around 400 million in the usa and somewhere between 1.2 billion and 1.3 billion worldwide.
SpideyQuad - 5/6/2013, 1:41 PM
LOL, a DC fan accusing someone else of not being honest about their movies! This is rich, said the pot as it called the kettle black
JoeMomma29 - 5/6/2013, 1:42 PM
@ TheRealRemy

I hate to open Pandora's Box with you but here we go. Who the frick is asking to count tickets? Everyone knows this movie has made bank and will continue to make the bucks for the next several weeks. You have your Marvelite blinders on that this movie was weak and had a lot of issues. But let me guess your rebuttal:

1. Ummmm it made a lot of money
2. MCU can do no wrong
3. Ummm DC sucks
Brainiac13 - 5/6/2013, 1:43 PM

Gold avatar...LOL
JoeMomma29 - 5/6/2013, 1:46 PM
@ TheRealRemy

Yup I am proud that I have a child who has a C average! OH did I say average!!!!
JoeMomma29 - 5/6/2013, 1:47 PM
@ RealRemy

I forgot you Marvelites only refer to MCU not the other bastard movies that Marvel has a hand in. That always cracks me up, just keep sticking those little bastards in the attic!!!
tonytony - 5/6/2013, 1:48 PM
@joemomma29 true story, big box office numbers do not equal good movie. But Iron man 3 despite its numerous flaws is still a decent watch.
It was always going to do well regardless of the content due to the goodwill of the avengers. The only movie this year with any chance of catching Iron man 3 is Man of steel and that would help cement the genre even more as its important that tentpole franchises like these do well if not people start writing obituaries for the genre.

ATrueHero1987 - 5/6/2013, 1:58 PM
@Nomis Well the only bad word of mouth it's coming from is some of the fans. Everybody else...likes it. Mostly anyway. It more than likely won't be #1 when Star Trek:Into Darkness comes out. I just hope Marvel/Feige doesn't do anything silly like that again.
Avenged99 - 5/6/2013, 2:06 PM
why must it be allowed for losers to be born? haters gonna hate. NO MOVIE IN THE HISTORY OF MOVIES WILL BE PERFECT!! SHUT UR GAPPING BUTTS AND ENJOY THE FRICKEN MOVIE!!!
ATrueHero1987 - 5/6/2013, 2:10 PM
@Nomis It's a different story on RT user reviews. Me personally I don't follow either one though, user wise.
rocky - 5/6/2013, 2:24 PM
IM3 was amazing and deserves every bit of that money. I will giving them more of my money too a couple of more times...

..but MOS remains my most anticipated cbm. I hope IM3 keeps raking it in and hopefully MOS will be in the same ballpark money wise
Tempo - 5/6/2013, 2:38 PM
It will end the run with 1.3 Billion dollar, today is so easy make money in Hollywood.

GodzillaKart - 5/6/2013, 2:50 PM
Great! Well deserved. IM3 was better than Avengers and right up there with IM for Marvel's top spot.
norseman79 - 5/6/2013, 3:06 PM
Agree with Nomis.
marvel72 - 5/6/2013, 3:10 PM
i enjoyed iron man 3,the action in this is shit hot.

but thor the dark world will be better but it won't make iron man 3 kinda money,i predict $600-$750,000,000.
